Why did Woodland change from the Tour B X ball to Pro V1 and win with it?

Wilson/Staff better make Gary Woodland very happy and keep him as an ambassador if they want to keep their comeback going in the right direction. The fact that he plays a mixed bag says to me they should really work to produce him a Driver that he would be happy to play.

I recently saw review of the blades prior to the U.S. Open. For the first time in many years, I was on their website checking out their gear. That is at least a step in the right direction.

They need to stop doing that ridiculous driver vs. driver show and releasing the winner as their top of the line model if they want to be taken seriously as a company. I love all 3 models of forged irons they have out but the need to stop with the gimmicks that make the company look desperate.

Wilson Staff has been churning out some quality irons, wedges, putters, & balls for a while now. I even played the M3 fairway wood for a couple of years and really liked it. Their shortcoming is definitely the driver. They tend to have a good shape and perform fine, but the sound and feel range from meh to yikes.

Personally, I think they should come out with a no-nonsense deep faced driver with a premium shaft at D2 – D4 and call it The Whale. Something akin to an updated Cleveland Classic Custom. Focus on the sound and feel rather than tech. Price it at $300 and play up the nostalgia.

Have you tried D7? It’s very light, but maybe with a shaft change it could be what you’re looking for- looks, sound and feel are all there, imo.

Once our covered wagon train arrived, I purchased a set of Wilson Staff irons. Eventually I learned to hit them; used them for years, found that they felt sweet to hit & were very accurate too. Only two others that I hit felt as good; they were the Nicklaus’s Murifield, Titleist & Mizuno Forged. Being a low handicapper for a number of years, all of the aforementioned iron performed quite well. Now, not playing at that level, I have tried various irons & play Cobra or Titleist Forged but for some unknown reason never tried newer models of the Wilson & Hogan Lines. Hope to rectify that in the near future. It seems like Wilson has been on it’s way back for the last few years & the win will help…

Same “come-uppance” here. Difference – I went back to Wilson FG Tour with the V2. They were / are great clubs. Currently playing FG Tour F5, and PMP Wedges = 52 & 60. VERY good clubs. Would like to step up to latest model irons (V6, Tour or C300)- but so happy with current model, ??? One regret – didn’t get KBS Shafts this time – they are great!

Do your own test using a new model Wilson Driver against a new model Callaway, Titliest, Ping, Taylormade…just go into one of the large golf stores with hitting bays and do a simple indoor test…..then let us know what the chances of someone winning real soon with a Wilson Driver…

I think they are back. This is a big win for Wilson Staff. They have made strides in getting back to a front line manufacturer in the last couple years. Keep it coming.

I don’t think they are back, but I do think they are coming back. They make some top quality irons no doubt and make a decent enough ball. If they would just focus their resources into serious, quality products across the board (drivers, woods, wedges, putters) instead of gimmicky, cheaper products, I think they could easily be a serious player in the equipment world again.

Wilson has had high quality clubs for some time. Woodland’s victory should increase the sales of the blades he plays, the V6, and the forged C300 models in particular as well as spilling over into the more game improvement models.

I’m not sure they’re back until they get someone playing the V-6 or something not a blade that the average golfer can play OR someone actually using a Cortex driver that wins a bunch or a major.

Regarding those blades … let me be the first and probably only guy to say the Wilson Staff Model Blades WILL be my next set of irons.** I don’t care about help or forgiveness or losing a couple of strokes a round due to misses – they are THE best feeling irons (when struck well) that I’ve ever hit. And I know it makes no sense, but neither does golf.

** unless Cobra comes out with a set of the Ricky MB/CB combos in One Length :)
