Got Questions? Ask MyGolfSpy

So much is happening at MyGolfSpy right now. Since the start of the year, we’ve hired two new team members. Harry Nodwell (is that not the most British name ever?) will help Sam Robinson with Most Wanted Testing and will also oversee the creation our annual footwear and accessories Buyer’s Guides. We’ve also hired Matt Duerr to lead our video and podcasting efforts, which really means helping us start the next chapter of MyGolfSpy.

Sufficed to say, it’s been a busy start to the year for MyGolfSpy and the industry.

Here’s the rest of the rundown:

  • We’re a good bit of the way into our Most Wanted Driver (and Putter) test, and the rest of the bag will follow as quickly as possible.
  • A biblically-sized flood of new gear has hit the market
  • The PGA Show happened
  • Callaway has declared a Ball War with Titleist

And that’s probably just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

Ask MyGolfSpy

With so much happening with MyGolfSpy and the equipment industry right now, we thought you might have questions, and we’d be love to try and answer some of them.

I’m not sure everyone understands how extensive our Most Wanted testing is, so if there’s something you’d like to know about how we test or why we test the way we do, definitely ask.

Got questions about new releases, or what’s going on in the industry, feel free to ask those too.

Basically, if there’s anything you’d like to know about MyGolfSpy or anything we cover, ask.

For our first video, I can’t promise that we’ll answer everything, but we’ll do our best to answer as many as we reasonably can.

Feel free to ask your questions in the comment sections or on Twitter with hashtag #askmygolfspy.

Golf ball testing: Driver/6 or 7 iron/100 yard pitch shots. Launch, spin, apex height, carry, total. Maybe also classify fade and draw shots. Would love to see this testing and results. All golf ball brands and versions (ProV1/ProV1x, TP5/TP5x etc.). Would help further optimize desireable outcomes for individials’ needs!

Scenario: Leaving out any brand name bias (which is a fundamental tenet of MGS ;) ), and any subjective influence (i.e. I don’t like the color, or the sound or the shape or whatever), going simply with “the data”. If you could test all the clubs you wanted, and get “the data” personalized for you, if you were going to by a complete set of clubs — D, 3W, 4H, 5-PW, 2 or 3 Wedges (A/G/S/L) and a Putter, would you buy all one brand, or would you, for example, go with an M4 driver, Callway fairway wood, Cobra hybrid, Mizuno irons, Cleveland wedges (or split those up), and an Evnroll or MLA putter. (Remember, any brand is available.)

I would love to see you review golf clubs aimed at kids. US Kids Golf, Tour Edge, Wilson, Ping and more offer clubs specifically aimed at children. It would be very interesting to see data on how these clubs perform. For comparison, maybe also have children hit a set of women’s clubs and ask them to choke down a bit. Is that the more cost effective approach?

We hear a great deal about the number of PGA Tour pros who live in the Palm Beach area. But where do they actually play and practice? Are they required to join a club and pay membership fees like us mortals or can Rory, Tiger and Rickie, etc., just slide on over to The Medalist, Old Palm, Bear’s Club, etc., and say, “I’m here and thanks for having me?” And if touring professionals ARE welcomed at even the most private clubs, can they bring along non-pro civilian friends? “Uh, sorry, Mr. Woods, but you, Mr. Jeter, Mr. Steinberg and Mr. Jordan aren’t members here at Exclusively Eliteist Golf and Yachting Club. We’re terribly sorry.”

      Who knows the real scoop?

When testing clubs can you break by a few things: Swing speed, type of miss for tester – slice, pull, hook or path… We all have different swing types and misses so more detail on how the club reacts would be great. I also this something on dispersion / consistency is really important when evaluating.

      All-Time Most Wanted [insert]:

If logistically feasible, then would MyGolfSpy entertain an All-Time Most Wanted Category for each of the past tested equipment?

The very essence of the yearly Most Wanted categories is to inform the consumer/reader of real and un-biased testing. Thus, with the All-Time Most Wanted category, it would give credibility and trust to the site’s yearly testing. Without it, each year, is viewed in a vacuumed without any real substance other than testing the new marketing bonanza of each OEM. Please note, I have no idea whether or not the 2017 Most Wanted testing and, in turn its recommendations, are any better than 2015 testing. Indirectly, the site’s testing is encouraging and validating the claims of the cycled marketing blitz.

Lastly, I applaud the use of the use of the stock shafts in the site’s testing, as it’s more probable that most consumers will not get fitted. However, for the All-Time Most Wanted categories a mere suggestion would be to use an across the board shaft. This would ensure that the shaft does not come into play and focus the un-biased testing on the main category itself, i.e., driver, fairway wood, hybrid, iron, and wedge. And, the end result would be “the truth and nothing but.”

If not feasible, then would a pay-for-testing make it feasible? Set a goal amount and if met by the site’s readership, then would that make the All-Time Most Wanted feasible?

Again, the site’s testing and efforts are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am curious if you have done any objective testing if spining/FLOing/puring of shafts makes any measurable difference on club performance. There is a dearth of published data out there to back the claims of club fitters who use these techniques and charge a pretty penny for them. Evidence beats opinions every time, a value near and dear to MGS, and my skeptical self.

As a club builder and golf instructor I spine the shafts for a customer at no extra charge. I believe that having the spine turned at 9 o’clock helps my students hit the golf ball straighter even when he or she does not swing at their best especially within the iron set.

I would like you to classify driver sounds. They are a complete killer for me, if they are too loud and/or tinny. I know that in this category it is rather subjective wether one likes a sound or not. So categories as “solid” or something like that don’t help. But maybe you could use a spectrum of ten degrees from “wooden=10” to “tinny=1” (of course the persimmon days are over (feelwise unfortunately) but titanium heads can feel a little more or less in that direction) and another spectrum of ten degrees from “muted=10” to “loud=1”. The result for a driver could be: 8 wooden-tinny (w-t) and 9 muted-loud (m-l) meaning it sounds a lot more wooden and muted than the opposite. (That is my rating for the Ping Rapture I, the Mizuno MP650 I would rate 8 w-t and 8 m-l and the TM SLDR 7 w-t and 6 m-l)

As a retiree I love reading about all the new”expensive” golf equipment that comes out every year, but for a lot of us die hard players we can’t afford them until years after they come out. With some of Cleveland’s and Wilson’s new products,Xcaliber shafts and Wishon’s components why not have a catagory like “ Best Bang for your Buck”. I am sure there are others online that make quality products that can compete without endorsements and high retail margins.

Please do more reviews with the slower swing speeds in mind and how we can increase distance by taking advantage of technology. I know that fitting is important but where does technology actually come into play best?

can you tell me if there is a company that allows you to interchange different grips on a putter shaft similar to the way you can interchange a driver head on a variety of shafts. choosing putter grips by just holding them in your hands does not reproduce the true feeling when actually putting. many big box stores only offer 2-3 grip choices.

Could you do testing on the big name drivers of the last say 5 years. Using the same shaft in all the clubs based on the needs of each tester. I know that top fitting places have universal connectors that they use that would enable this type of testing. Then we would know which heads had the best results based on swing speeds. It seems that the future of drivers has plateaued. The key now will be finding the best head and shaft combo. This kind of testing would help us to streamline finding the ideal setup for our games at the lowest cost. If a Rocketballs stage 2 is as long and forgiving as an M3 or Jailbreak wonder stick we could pick up a stage 2 for really cheap and spend more on the ideal shaft for our game. When I say the same I mean within half a club difference on the next shot. Then we could spend our money getting the best, irons for our games, best wedges and best putter.

Rick Shiels has already done this comparison with one shaft last year for the big OEMs and the results are very interesting. Not every company always moved in one direction ;-)
I still would love to see a comparison of the newest drivers to the Ping RAPTURE I driver with an up to date shaft. That driver already had carbon crown, saved weight back and low and less depth from clubface to the back of the club which I feel is still a very modern approach for a better players driver. And the acoustics and feel of that driver are still unmatched for me since then. The ball at impact almost felt as if it was staying for a little bit longer on the clubface ( a bit like in my old persimmon days) and that was great feedback and assured morr reward and fun to hit the driver.

And there’s an even better video that was made 6 or 7 years ago with a clubmaker in Scotland. He said the balls were the real difference nowadays, and proceeded to show a hickory-shafted circa 1880’s golf club (new that he had made, of course), compared to a 1970’s/1980’s persimmon wood, to a 460cc driver and the difference was only 15 yards! Perhaps a test showing ball improvements over 50 years vs. club improvements?

So my question is, besides Envroll and other company’s variable milled grooves, are there are other pieces of technology that Envroll or others use that you would include as improvements in putting technology?
Another question, due to the higher MOI of mallets, assuming you got the proper neck flow, weighting and what not, would any golfer not improve their consistency by gaming a mallet over a blade putter?

      Tony,

      Here’s my question.

Everyone is all gung-ho about testing the clubs of the “big four” especially Drivers and Irons. Every retailer is trying to sell me the “big four”, I don’t play a single club in my bag from the big four. Not one.

For instance, as my handicap has gotten better (I’m currently a 6.7), I’ve been looking for something more “player’s irons” than my Tour Edge Exotics EXi, what the first iron they hand me, “Titleist 718 AP2”, then the MB and others, then Taylormade P750, and so on. The last two they gave me were the CBX forged and CBX blades for Tour Edge Exotics.

Sorry for rambling, Tony. Two questions. First, have you reviewed the CBX line from Tour Edge Exotics, if not can you try to? Secondly, since Tour Edge HL3 is new are you planning on reviewing that line?

There are a lot of smaller companies out there that make great products, and they deserve some love. (We’re not talking about GigaGolf or the Diamond Tour clones)

Have you ever asked the fitters to give you a blind fitting? Tape over the back of the clubs and then hit them? Sometimes the best fit comes from the big four. I think any fitting needs to include the best Japanese forgings and srixon irons for a single digit handicap. Before I did a blind fitting I had never even heard of KZG and now I swear by their irons, I have a midsize blade that I can shape both ways and flight high or low. They feel like butter and are very forgiving for a blade. Just a point a view you may not have tried.

I would like to second Dave Savage’s question about your possibly putting more club testing emphasis on players who hit driver around 180 yards with club swing speeds closer to 70-80 mph. Sure seems like there are a lot more players in this category than there are in the high speed group.

hi Tony I follow all of your test. I think you are doing a great service to all us that are out on the courses hacking away. First I would like to explain about myself and the game of golf I play. I am known as Mr. practice. I like to practice as much as I play. My clubs are Taylormade 2.0. Driver, fairway woods and irons.Senior flex graphite shaft. My handicap is I0.6. just turned 83 years old. If I can keep my eyes on the ball when stricking it the flight of the ball driver and irons is straight. My main problem is I do come up a little short, so I am chipping when I should be putting. I have tried using other irons when practicing. I see no difference in distance so my question to you is after seeing all the game improvement you are testing why should I invest in a new set of irons? From looking at your test I might and I say might gain several strokes a round. Is it worth spending $700 to $900 for a new set of irons for a few strokes? If I did
go for a new set of irons how do I know what to invest in? Thanks for any advice you can offer.

This is an awesome idea! Below are my questions:

*With different shafts fitting different people, do/how you try to get as close to the same shaft as possible if a person is testing multiple clubs in the same category?

*How do you become a tester for the most wanted testing, and do you have to be at your facility to take part in the testing?

*What has been the most shocking piece of information that you discovered about golf since becoming a part of the MGS team?

*What has been the best club you’ve ever tested and why?

*In your own bags, how much do you follow the most wanted testing?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of shortening your driver shaft? I have so much control when I experiment with a shorter shaft but don’t know if I am really sacrificing that much distance. I notices Tiger making fun of Day for doing the same and I’d like to see the numbers on the same driver, same shaft but different lengths.

In 2008 the PGA and the USGA set a limit for the maximum amount of COR a driver face could legally have. This hasn’t changed yet we have countless adverts from manufacturers declaring “new hitter face.”
With the limit of COR still being the same why are members of the golfing public forking out vast sums of cash for a driver that can’t possibly hit it any better than one they owned 10 years ago. It’s all purely marketing.

I would LOVE to know how removing weights from the bottom of the drivers effects Spin, MOI, etc.. I removed both M1 weights last year and loved it. I’m sure it is stupid but I truly preferred the weight, feel and speed it gave me! According to a Trackman session, I picked up 5.5MPH of CHS (I understand most wouldn’t pick that much speed up but the feel of the club was so appealing which helped). Obviously with less weight the SF went down but w/ 5.5mph, it still provided 3mph faster ball speeds. Thoughts, please!!??

In the past the most wanted test had some more subjective information based on the testers personal opinion about the equipment. Currently the results are based on the numbers. The numbers really tell the story on performance but sometimes the subjective can help a decision between two clubs when the numbers are very close. Can you elaborate on why the subjective data has been removed?

While I am more than bought in that getting on a swing monitor can help dial in what makes the most sense for your swing I want to know if the upcharge is really worth it by the club fitter/builder vs. a club fitting by your club pro or other fitter who is not actually building the club (e.g. GolfTec who relies on manufactto build to spec). I would love to know however instead of the results of a ProV1x v TP5 or Snell or Kirkland (or similar) what are the results of a ProV1x v a ball the next price bracket down , like an NXT or Taylor Made project a (or similar) .. so I could really determine if the $20-30 more is worth it

Only way to find that out is to buy a sleeve and test them from 3/4 wedge range, 1/2 wedge range, 20 yard chips and other work around the greens. I find some balls spin to much and others not enough. You don’t want to have to change you swing because the ball spins to much or not enough. Ball choices are very personal.

Is there a diminishing rate of performance gain as playing ability increases when comparing wallhangers to Evnroll? For example, if you were to change the tester pool to only high level competitive amateurs and pro golfer, would Evnroll’s documented performance gap over wallhangers be zero than the same test test for the general population or is the performance gain, while likely less, still considered significant regardless of playing ability.

Do you think that (a) G400 Max was developed and released as a result of “poor” G400 market penetration, (b) Ping during their research found that the G400 Max’s 460CC performance was so good that they couldn’t wait to release it (similar to how Taylormade released SLDR months after R1) or (C) random luck / some other reason?

I hit it 200 yards reliably. I’ve also started chipping with it and it may become my go to club from the fringe to 10 ft off the green. Do you guys determine and use statistical significance with your data? I know you are data driven, but if you don’t properly determine statistical significance between numbers, those number don’t mean anything?
Also, why do you seem to sing the praises of technological advances for some companies, yet for others you are at best dismissive and often will lambaste the company. Example, you sing high praises for EVNROLL because of their groove tech, and while I’m sure they do perform, it is not the first company to include groves on the face of the putter. When TM announced TwistFace (regardless of the quality of the name) your first response to crap all over it and play it as a pure marketing ploy (before testing it yourselves, which seems biased), because they aren’t the first company to do something with the face of the club.

I’m a long time low single digit index player that hit the proverbial handicap wall long ago.
I’m stuck and need to get to the next lower level.
I’ve made all the recommended MYGOLFSPY changes throughout
the bag with great results… Except for irons. I’m still playing muscle back blades as I have my whole life. (48 years young and playing thirty six years.)
I still maintain valid swing speed and yardage results.
My question is; would switching to a game improvement iron make the difference in my games results that I am looking for? More forgiveness.
Two years ago I switched to a highly popular technically advanced players club with no improved results to speak of… In fact a I didn’t like them (Ball flight) and switched back to the blades.
Currently there is a set of irons offered this year from a major manufacturer that look appealing to me with thinner top lines that fall into the improvement line up… Although they feel different in their cast offering over forged, it is a feeling I could get used to it they would increase forgiveness to get me to post those better and more consistent scores.
Stick with what I know, or change things up drastically to get the handicap going in the direction I want.
Any thoughts on this is greatly appreciated.
