History Won’t Repeat – Wilson Cortex and Rozwell Added to USGA Conforming List

On the eve of the Driver vs. Driver 2 finale, both of the finalists have found their way on to the USGA’s conforming clubs list.

After the debacle that was the Triton being deemed non-conforming, Wilson hasn’t taken any chances this time around. The company says it has worked with the USGA every step of the way to ensure history wouldn’t repeat itself, including taking on the expense that comes from submitting both drivers to the USGA. Wilson plans to release the winning driver in time for the holiday shopping season (which, I suppose, officially begins next Thursday), so in that respect, it’s logical that Wilson would ensure all the bases are covered with a week to spare.

Two Winners?

While I’d put the odds somewhere between slim and none, it does crack open the door for a surprise scenario in which Wilson brings both models to retail. Don’t bet your Christmas money on it.

And the Winner Is…

We’ll find out tomorrow who the winner is – and it’s not like I have any inside information. My opinion is that the Cortex should be heavily favored. The design isn’t particularly ground-breaking, but it offers tried and true methods of moving mass around. It’s a bit of an M1 meets every other adjustable driver you’ve ever seen kind of design. It’s familiar and functional.

Comparatively, Rozwell looks a bit more innovative but the design doesn’t’ appear to offer any significant amount of mass movement, and there appears to be a significant amount of weight tied up in the structure of the track. The performance implications of that are not ideal. It looks cool, but based on what we can see, it might very well be a case of form over function.

Either way, Wilson is 100% ready to go this time around, and that’s a huge improvement.

The final episode of Driver vs. Driver 2 airs tomorrow (11/13/18) at 9PM Eastern Time on The Golf Channel.

I got the Wilson Triton new in year 2 at $169 and it is the best bargain I ever made in golf clubs. Great distance and control. I’ll seriously think about the Cortex after the price goes down in year 2 or 3.

Just curious , how many drivers of the TRITON were sold ? Both of these new clubs Roswell and cortex look really good. Also after giving the winner $250,000 how many cortex will Wilson have to sell in order to be profitable ?

Wilson has never been big with drivers over the past 10-15 years. Their driver vs driver show is mostly a big marketing ploy hoping to make golfers more aware of Wilson and hopefully put them on the the “driver” map. I still don’t think sales will be great, after the bomb of last years triton which didn’t sell, down to $169 in less than a year. I think the cortex will win or a tie.

Even if the Roswell ended up superior to the Cortex in every way, the OCD club cleaner in me couldn’t handle the “miles” of track to be cleaned out! I can deal with slider track, just not that much!

I saw on g.s. where the Wilson D300 was second to the Ping G400 in club speed. I am 75 . A new D300 is about $250 new. I bought a used for a buck and a quarter. The speed rating is for slow swing speeds, and is the longest driver I ever hit.

Fool us once (the Triton) not again, just had a email offering the New Wilson DVD2 for $499……A 2 year old DVD1 Triton is worth $33 at Rock bottom golf or $48 if you are willing to take a store credit…….if Wilson really think they got it right this time where is their offer to take the DVD1 Triton in trade at a reasonable price??

You realize that the shaft being offered on this driver is $300, right? It’s a tour spec shaft. Ping offered a new “better” driver a few MONTHS after its new lineup came out. I don’t know if the Wilson driver is right for you, but I hit both the Roswell and Cortex (played 18 with each) and both are awesome. And for $499, with the tour shaft, it’s essentially a $200 head. That’s a good deal.

      Distance Distance Distance.
That it what sells. Both drivers look good and are esthetically appealing at address with relatively traditional looks.

That said, which one is the longest? Which one will make the top three list of the Best 2019 Drivers test by mygolfspy? Seems like Roswell was significantly longer on the show.

It would be nice if they tested each one at swing speeds of less than 100 mph and more than 100 mph.

I choose Roswell due to better Distance Distance Distance!

People who think Callaway and Taylormade are the leaders then think again. Wilson has made clubs long before those other companies ever existed. They make a gimmicky driver but what about the drivers they have made that aren’t. The M3, F5, and the new C300. The Triton out distanced the Epic and the Rogue and was a great driver. But you want some clubs that really perform try the C300 Forged and the V6 forged irons. These forged irons are equal to if not better than Mizuno. People think Wilson cant make clubs well go and hit them and get fit for a set and they will out perform Callaway and TM. I have played the M3 irons and woods.I have played the F5 irons and woods , Have played the C300 irons and woods. They out perform any other clubs I have tried. Before you criticize Wilson go hit them and put them on a launch monitor and you make the choice. Nothing out there will beat them.

Wilson just needs to make a driver that performs. In one year the show will mean very little but if it’s a good driver people will remember it.
Build your name back through quality products not flashy marketing
and gimmicks. The Cortex gets my vote it should only take two seconds to see how to adjust your driver. Messing around with weights in that Z track looks like no fun to me.

So many nay sayers and they haven’t touched the drivers!!! I’m glad Wilson is making an effort to return to relevance. Their irons are moving up the ratings every year. The Triton was a pretty good driver from the reviews I’ve read. Kudos to Wilson Sporting Goods!!!

If it ain’t Callaway, Taylor Made, Ping or one of the “Designer” Drivers that makes you look good, it obviously must be junk, right. Well, I have been playing wilson for years and last years winner, the Triton is a great playing Driver. It is big, loud, and Wilson, but I have been outhitting both my pals Epic and I am 10 yrs older than either of them. Now I have a C300 and not quite as long as the Triton, but it is very good. But, money talks a good story, doesn’t it. Just try one someday, nobody will know, and you may save enough to buy a new bag.

I’m rooting for the Rozwell. It’s a bit different, and can do anything the Cortex can do, adjustability-wise. I like the idea of the new crown, and the slightly different look. Either way, I’m enjoying the show, and would be more than fine with a “draw”, if you’ll excuse the pun.

Guys were pounding the latest version of the Roswell. It was getting major thumbs up. I just wonder what they could have done with the 3rd place finish model. That guy could not and would not take constructive criticism. The club was performing. Who knows how good it could have been. Wondering if Wilson has the rights to it? There’s clearly something there. That said the Roswell’s numbers took a step forward on the last episode. Splitting the baby wouldn’t surprise me at all.

I was lucky enough to test both drivers this weekend with the Wilson team, and I can tell you first hand, they are both awesome. I was fit at Club champion this spring for a Ping G400 Max (didn’t buy it because I blew my budget in irons) and the Wilson clubs were both as forgiving, in my opinion. I played better with the Cortex. I found it easy to turn over and I had a nice draw on most of my drives. This is something I struggle with using my current driver (Taylormade R15). Wilson knows it’s hitting against the idea that they aren’t one of the “big boys” but I think that most golfers would rather have better performance than “cool” clubs. After all, there’s nothing cooler than taking money from your friends or winning the club championship. I expect the winning Wilson driver will do best well in your 2019 Driver test.

I would agree thet the Cortex will be the winner. The traditional look will have more appeal to the market. I believe the specs were relatively similar.
      But looks offer confidence.

I think they’ll end up in a tie and they will market both drivers awarding each contestant $250k.

And that was probably the idea all along and the reason for cutting the $500k in half this season.

The Cortex is more traditional looking which tends to sell better. The real question is who would buy a Wilson driver? They haven’t made a decent driver since the Killer Whale.

This development is not ringing any bells with consumers – we need to see something ground-breaking. They need to find a new material to use in the heads that improves feel and accuracy – then they will have earned headlining status. This stuff is a yawn.

It wouldn’t entice me to consider Wilson. I know a friend of mine who was considering a Wilson Staff iron and went to Callaway Rogue. More sex appeal and it looks like a golf club! Some of these drivers..even the Triton…looks like something that should be used as a bug catcher rather than a driver! Good luck with that Wilson!

      Brandon

The whole reality tv thing puts off kind of an infomercial vibe. I’m sure whatever driver wins will be a fine club, but most people I know wouldn’t be caught dead with a square strike wedge, vertical groove driver, etc. And that’s not because they are great golfers, it’s because golfers have egos and what clubs they choose to bag is a huge reflection of said ego.

You know the ol’ saying “What once was Will be again ” . Wilson was “The King” for many years and I believe they can be again . Finally the Driver is now the focus .I play V2 Tour irons, Fybrid which is one of the best clubs from them and of course can’t leave out the 8802 putter.. I do play he Triton and it’s a gas to tune ..Love the power but not the sound and the ugly stripe..

As a marketer and golf lover, I find the show great on both fronts. The Rozwell doesn’t do it for me, the name alone is likely tops of most hated list amongst Wilson Golf’s marketing team. Cortex to me is 2016 M1 meets 2016 M2.
