Hype Meter: Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour

Hype Meter: Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour

You’ve heard about them, maybe seen them too. Everyday products are being hyped in your Twitter and Instagram feeds. They’re sometimes endorsed by pros, celebrities, and influencers alike. But do they live up to the hype? We take a closer look.

What are Golfers Talking About?

In 2017, Brooks Koepka issued Nike a challenge. He said, “Design me a running shoe that I can golf in.” Nike responded, “Let’s do it.”

Nike knows itself a thing or two about a good running shoe. The mega-brand integrated elements originally designed for running shoes and soccer cleats and combined it with Nike Zoom Stroble technology, first utilized by the NBA’s Kevin Durant.

The end result? The Nike Zoom Air Infinity Tour. They got the thumbs up from Koepka and Nike claims his swing speed increased as compared to his speed while wearing previous Nike models. How much? Nike doesn’t say, but we’re here to see if the Air Zoom Infinity Tour lives up to the hype.

Product Expert

Hi, I’m Harry, and I am a professional golf shoe tester. (Yes, they exist.) I actually test a lot of things at MyGolfSpy and play professionally when I’m not checking and comparing specs on gloves, rangefinders, bags.. ball retrievers.. etc. You can call me the Director of Soft Goods Testing here at MGS. You can also just call me Harry, that’s fine too.

Why the Hype?

Simple. Brooks Koepka. Koepka is known to tailor his equipment, regardless of brand association, to best fit his game. Not to mention, he’s got one of the fastest swing speeds on tour. And modern research shows that a golfer’s shoe contributes to said golfer’s ability to generate speed. The design of the Air Zoom Infinity Tour also invites curiosity. It has three spikes, a large one on the heel, and two on the balls of the foot meant to be positioned to support weight transfer. It’s a spiked shoe? No, it’s a spikeless shoe? It has spikes.. but they’re not removable. Yeah I’m a little confused too. It is a golf shoe, status confirmed.

Where The Hype is Coming From?

Nike gets people talking. Wearing the swoosh, to some, is as close to part of their identity as their preference for pineapple on pizza. If you like it you live by it and Nike diehards are there to buy and try almost anything they put out.

Assessing the Hype

Let’s break down the golf shoe market quickly. An obvious but necessary piece of information, there’s two categories. Spiked and Spikeless. Typically to be categorized as a spiked shoe, the spikes have to be removable. A spikeless shoe doesn’t have removable spikes, the studs are traditionally rubber and cover the whole sole of the shoe. In the last number of years we’ve seen the spikeless category bridge the gap between a traditional golf shoe and a lifestyle shoe. I tested a number of shoes in 2020 that I could wear straight to the gym (cough, pub) afterwards and no one would be any the wiser.

What’s interesting about the Air Zoom Infinity Tour is that they’ve created a category of their own. You could use the word hybrid and you wouldn’t be all wrong.

We mentioned the large, circular spike on the heel. May I emphasize large? The large spike on the heel is absolutely unique to the Air Zoom Infinity Tour. According to my assessment, you get traction but is it any better or worse than any other spiked/spikeless shoe on the market? No.

Another important design element is the padding on either side of the Achilles, intended to stabilize the foot and reduce heel movement. I love the idea but I’m also very emotionally attached to my Achilles. These shoes were very mean to them. Very mean. I might write a sad breakup song about it.

That said, it’s a great looking shoe. We might not be right for each other, but I would buy a pair and hang them on my wall. I’ll get them the fancy frame too.

Does it Live Up To the Hype?

The Bottom Line

Nike did what Brooks Koepka asked of them. Does it live up to the hype? Depends. For a Nike loyalist, it’s another job well done. Based purely on performance, I think they’re a little over-hyped. As I said, it’s a good looking shoe. But it’s what’s on the inside that counts.

Bought them. And returned in 24 hours. I like some of the Nike offerings over the years but they are hit or miss. These are awkward to run, walk and especially golf in. The base is soooo narrow. They just don’t make any sense at all for golf. Just walking you feel like you’re going to topple over and roll an ankle. I was honestly shocked by the design. All you need to do is create a stable platform for golf. That’s it! That’s why ten years ago you would see pros actually playing in skateboard shoes on dry courses. These look great, lock your foot in place. Seem like great quality but the narrow base is really odd. who engineered this?

But they aren’t made for every golfer. They are really a golfing style shoe. Did you even read this? They are a running shoe made into a golf shoe for Brooks. They aren’t made for average players and their non athletic weak ass ankles.

So, as a 6 foot tall, relatively slender golfer with narrow feet, I’ve always had issues finding golf shoes that feel like they truly fit. My feet are usually swimming around in shoes a little bit, just because my feet are narrow. I usually have to put additional cushioning insoles to fill the shoe out.

So with this shoe, my fit has been absolutely amazing. The Achilles padding is awesome, but this is for me. Feet come in different shapes and sizes. If you have a relatively slender build like a runner/triathlete type physique, I think you will love this shoe. Great grip, Nike website talks about a “locked in feeling“ that shoe is supposed to give you. It definitely does it for me. So for me and my feet, best golf shoe ever, period.

So….I bought the hype and bought the shoes. Everything Harry described is true. I wear Nike and Addidas running shoes and thought these would be a great fit for me. I am a size 12 and I have a narrow foot. I have had Adidas Tour 360 BOA size 11 for 6 years and love them. They are starting to fall apart after 6 years though.

I have to tell you, the fit on these Nike’s were awful. Nike is known for being narrow but these are ridiculous. Not to mention they are straight up uncomfortable. I couldn’t imagine walking one hole in them let alone 18.

Very disappointed and they went back immediately. All hype, horrible fit.

The shoes are sweet, they are comfortable, but as a retailer I will continue to say this is the worst roll out of a new shoe in the history of golf. I had 4 colors pre-booked in September for an qpril ship date, ship dates switched, dropped one of the colors, I have to this day recieved 2 colors, with a crazy size run as they were allocated. Size 6 mens huh? Rep says well they are unisex so sell them to women, oh yeah that works, put one size over in the lady section, that sure makes the ladies happy. Major drop of the ball on these things. Of course Nike doesn’t reallly want an independent retailer like me to really be a good partner, Its been known for a while the end game is big box and nike.com for all golf stuff at some point.

I was fortunate enough to get a pair of these when they were first released. They turn heads, as well as being the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. My driving distance went up 20 yards when I paired the shoes with a mustache.

Nike is dropping fire right now.

IMHO Nike shoes have been going downhill in quality, function, comfort, and looks. With this particular shoes, I would wear down those spikes in a few months…then what?! I tend to wear out the outer part of the sole first. Just not for me.

I’m used to MGS doing data-based reviews. This review is disappointing in that regard. A data-based review for a golf shoe would be – Does it increase your swing speed and/or accuracy like Nike claims? I did not see that question answered. Hopefully there’s not a Nike bias at play, as many of the comments seem to indicate. Politics has no place in product reviews. Keep the feelings out of it.

This article is to do with HYPE. Not 100% data driven. Thats not the articles purpose. It’s to do with the hype around the shoe, so we made sure we covered it in someway to inform you, the consumer, if it’s worth spending your hard earned money on. The claim that we are bias towards Nike is absurd. Just look back at previous shoe articles and you will have your answer. This shoe was given a middle of the road review and stated if you want performance, not to buy this shoe.

I have them and they are bar none the best, most comfortable golf shoes I’ve ever owned. Most of the people commenting are making bizarre political comments about the shoes. As someone who has actually bought and played in them I am really pleased with them. Initially snug, the shoe stretches to your foot. The traction is perfect. I couldn’t recommend them more.

As a retired sports official, (baseball, and basketball), where I would purchase a new pair of shoes every fall for basketball and would also use them in doing the bases the following spring, I tried Nike shoes a couple of time s and found the to be not very comfortable. I finally found a pair if New Balance shoes that worked for me. I ended up using them for 20 plus years and still do today for walking on the treadmill 3 times a week. I’m a 76 year old fart.

I worked in the athletic shoe industry for years and learned about all different ways shoes are designed and how they should fit for different athletic endeavors. It’s a scientifically sophisticated field. . I field tested shoes for Nike, Adidas, New Balance, and ASICS as a professional athlete What I know is running shoes and golf shoes are designed for very different athletic motions and purpose. Running shoe profiles are designed specifically for symmetrically balanced forward motion, heel strikes, or mid foot strikes, built with a fairly soft, slip-last, made for primarily flat surfaces only – with the exception of a stiffer board-lasted trail running shoe. They are not designed for the side to side support or asymmetrical stability required for a golf swing. Golf shoes require a stable platform with lateral stability being the primary need to push off sideways not forward – and should also be comfortable and supportive as a walking shoe over varied, unstable terrain.. Tennis shoes with spikes are more likely a better style for golf rather than a running shoe with spikes, because the side to side motion of a tennis swing and lateral movements in tennis are more relevant to golf than a running shoe would be. And yes, I’m still waiting for Nike to acknowledge that a lot of us North Americans generally have wider feet than Europeans and other continents who have narrower feet (a perfect example would be Italian loafers and British oxfords. They’re nearly impossible to find in wide sizes). New Balance and Skechers have been making various widths for decades in their different athletic shoes. Footjoy has finally been making more shoes in wide, as is adidas, and sometimes Callaway. Puma, no, Ecco, no, and ASICS sometimes. Most people don’t wear the right size shoes – and don’t know how they should fit. Gone are the days when there were people who actually knew how to fit somebody in the proper sized shoes – and don’t even think about asking the people at golf stores. They just aren’t trained for that. But the truth is, the shoes are critical parts of good equipment. The swing starts from the ground up, and further, if your feet hurt, or you can’t trust your footing, then your game is likely going to suffer.

Harry- how did you give them a middle-ranking? You know this shoe is garbage, you said it yourself, it’s not the looks but what’s inside that counts. The performance is horrible when you walk off the course, you feel super unstable from the spikes, and the support is nonexistent. And a shoe that hurts or is “mean” to your achilles should not be promoted as a middle-ranking!

That’s the thing about the hype meter.. we’re assessing just that, whether it lives up to the hype. I put it middle of the road because there are more factors involved in a hype meter than just performance. Like I said, I think it’s a good looking shoe, that’s part of the hype. I don’t think it’s a good performing shoe, that’s also part of the hype. Bada-bing, middle of the road. And keep in mind, in a growing world of wildly successful shoes, middle of the road, ain’t so great anymore.

There is no more technology forward shoe in the world than the Nike zoom vaporfly next. I know golfers aren’t distance runners, but if you want a shoe that gives you a 4% advantage in a marathon, this is your shoe. This shoe is so good there was talk of banning it.
So, taking that cutting edge technology and applying it to golf where we walk anywhere from 6-8 miles, it makes total sense.
Personally, I have issues wearing Nike’s because my foot is very wide. I would definitely try this one if they came in wider sizes.

Quite a bit of people have claimed blisters on Achilles area. They are light and traction felt like swinging with a water bed strapped to my feet. Running shoes in golf might be good for some, just not me.

Nike golf shoes have been in.a weird place for a while. Their recent golf specific shoes looked like baseball cleats or hospital shoes. Then their other shoes are just iterations of their classic lifestyle shoes where they slap spikes/traction on the bottom with nothing specific to golf performance added. They do make some cool one-off jordans and other cool designs, but again, they just slap some spikes on the bottom with no golf-specific performance considerations.

These are actually in the right direction. Golf-specific design and thought put into looks AND performance. I actually don’t love the looks of these, but think the idea good and in a better direction than what they’ve been doing.

Brooks maybe just looking for comfort and fit. Let’s face it, their shoes, non golf included have gone down hill. Nikes running shoes are not even mentioned in core running shoes tests. They re mentioned in women’s life style models however. Nike has morphed into a life style brand thru marketing and advertising IMO. They have separated themselves from a performance brand that they once we’re. Their lasts have become generic to fit non athletic foot shapes. The lack of innovation and materials is apparent.

Players on tour are paid an incredible amount of money to wear the apparel, I think that says it all right there..

Couple of questions from a designer of both footwear and clubs: 1) does the outsole provide better traction than conventional spineless or spiked shoes; 2) running shoes aren’t often great for walking. How are these over 18 holes; 3) is the Fly-Knit able to be cleaned; 4) does the design aid stability or swing speed?

My experience with these shoes is:
      1) does the outsole provide better traction than conventional spineless or spiked shoes – I found them to have better traction than spikeless shoes but not as good as conventional spiked shoes
      2) running shoes aren’t often great for walking. How are these over 18 holes – These are incredibly comfortable for walking. IMO there is no better level of comfort than provide by the React technology. While the heel bothered Harry’s Achilles, it did not bother mine.
      3) is the Fly-Knit able to be cleaned – These are very, very, very easy to clean. Even the white React part of the shoes cleans easily.
      4) does the design aid stability or swing speed – I have no noticeable differences in swing speed wearing these. I find them to be less stable than say my spiked Nike React Vapor 2 spiked shoes, because the traction is not as good, so I spin out more. That said, it has not noticeably affected my accuracy.

I’ve worn these shoes for 10 rounds now. I like my React Vapor 2’s better for stability, but the ZITs are much more comfortable. I also own a pair of Adidas Code Chaos shoes, Adidas Tour 360 XT Primeknit shoes, and Adidas Forge Fiber shoes. The ZITs are the most comfortable of the bunch for me.

I returned my size 11 and bought an 11 wide off ebay, still too narrow. It is from Nike Korea, so not sure if their wide is a different width, but it is a US Size 11 wide on the tag.
