L.A.B. GOLF DIRECTED FORCE 2.1 VS. EVNROLL ER ZERO

OUR JOB IS YOUR GAME

Are you a putter fanatic? If a new putter comes to market, do you instantly jump on it? Or is your putting so atrocious that you’ll try anything to hole more putts?

In either case, perhaps I can pique your interest with two unique putters: L.A.B. Golf’s Directed Force 2.1 and Evnroll’s ER Zero.

Let’s take a look to see how they stacked up in 2022 Most Wanted Mallet testing.

VERDICT

Here is the skinny: Being able to return the putter face back to square is a game changer. It allows your putts to roll more consistently, be on target more consistently and, as a by-product, potentially make more putts. Same concept, two different OEMs (did I say that out loud?). What’s not to like?

Aesthetics. Neither of these putters is going to gain compliments from your playing partners. During testing, I heard ‘branding iron”, a few ‘WTFs”… You get the picture. If you can overcome aesthetics, one of these putters might work for you.

Now, neither of these putters finished near the top of Most Wanted Mallet testing. Directed Force 2.1 prioritizes being fitted for it. A strong case can be made for Evnroll ER Zero as well. At the end of the day, enhancing your game should be your top goal.

For me, Directed Force 2.1 is the choice. Utilizing their fitting techniques is a great way to ensure you have the right putter. I know it’s going to return to square extremely consistently which eliminates one of a few variables in my putting technique. There is stability through the putting stroke and it helps take my hands out of the stroke. With the combination of fitting precision, consistency of returning the face to square and stability, Directed Force 2.1 makes the cut.

HOW WE TEST

If you’ve been keeping tabs on 2022 Most Wanted, you know results are based on a 100-point scoring system. This new system will allow you to better identify golf clubs to potentially help you shoot lower scores.

With Most Wanted Putter testing, for both mallet and blades, we put an emphasis on one-putts. When you one-putt, you are saving strokes on your overall score. On the flip side, there is a penalty for a three-putt.

The 2022 Most Wanted Mallet Test included 28 products and took 80 hours to complete. During that time frame, 20 testers hit 12,960 putts.

DISTANCE PERFORMANCES

  • With a score of 84.75, ER Zero beats out Directed Force 2.1 by .75 from 5 feet. A narrow margin of victory.
  • From 10 feet, Directed Force 2.1 comes in at 79.2. This is 2.4 points better than the ER Zero.
  • At 20 feet, Directed Force 2.1 scores 92.25, which is 3.07 points better than ER Zero. Also, this score helps Directed Force 2.1 place 2nd overall from 20 feet in the 2022 Most Wanted Mallet Test.

BEHIND THE SCENES

During Most Wanted testing, Evnroll ER Zero wasn’t on the market. But we were able to get our hands on it. Guess what? It got thrown into the fold with the other putters in 2022 Most Wanted Mallet Test. Collecting data is one of our top priorities, especially with a newer product. Let’s take a look at each putter’s features.

L.A.B GOLF DIRECTED FORCE 2.1

  • Lie Angle Balance Technology (L.A.B.) is what drives Directed Force 2.1. With L.A.B Golf, returning the face to square with consistency is their top priority. Through Lie Angle Technology, they are able to achieve that.
  • Being fitted to the proper length and lie angle is an integral part of L.A.B. Golf’s process. If you are going this route, we highly recommend you get dialed in for your putter.
  • L.A.B. Golf implements forward-pressing automatically through their Press Grips. They pair well with a L.A.B. Golf Directed Force 2.1 or any of their putters. This feature enables a proper shaft lean at address which promotes a more upward strike on the golf ball.

EVNROLL ER ZERO

  • FaceForward Technology is at the forefront of ER Zero. In short, it connects the shaft to the head as nearly as possible to the geometric center of gravity. This leads to the face being forward throughout address and through the putting stroke.
  • ER Zero comes stock with Evnroll’s patented Gravity Grip. The Gravity Grip unites the golfer’s hands and the putter face. This produces a sense of connection throughout the putting stroke.
  • There are other patent-pending technologies that tie into the ER Zero.

BOTTOM LINE

How a product performs for you should be your utmost priority. Aesthetics, feel, sound, etc., are subjective. For me, the data shows some minute differences in testing between Directed Force 2.1 and ER Zero. Overall, the Directed Force 2.1 beats the ER Zero with better performances from 10 and 20 feet. If you can enhance your putting from 10 and 20 feet, do you think you’d have fewer putts per round? These data points, along with the benefits Directed Force 2.1 has to offer, make it my choice of the two. And, yes, it is currently in my bag.

I love my LAB putter. Sure, it’s a curiosity item but I’ve never putted so well and so confidently. He has, it cost some bucks but it was less than a new driver, and I can see using that putter forever. If that’s the case, what a great investment it was!

None of the guys I golf with laugh at my L.A.B.. DF putter. Thats because they’ve seen how much my putting has improved with it. I was fitted for it by Club Champion and they did a super job. It’s the most expensive club in my bag but money well spent! My Odyssey and Ping putters are permanently retired.

I’ve now played my L.A.B. DF 2.1 for 2 weeks (it took 6 weeks after my fitting to get delivered). I am loving it! Best feeling putter I have ever stroked! Shot a 66 and won yesterday’s women’s club tournament. I am 38 years old, and have a 15 handicap ( that is starting to trend down).

I have tried the direct force – not fitted just in the store.. So light it feels like it will blow away in the wind. Currently using a Ping Nome adjustable belly putter at shortest setting. 405 gram head.

“Being able to return the putter face back to square …”.

Seems to me that part of the challenge of golf is to accomplish this whether with putter or driver. And if the club is doing this for you, then why play? Granted more three putts are due to bad distance than bad direction so such putters will allow more focus on hitting distance since the putter is taking care of the direction.

I agree with Harvey Pennick who felt that lines on balls violated the USGA rule against alignment aids. Not only that , they create an unholy waste of time. Its just as infuriating to watch pro golfers fiddle with their ball on the green as it is to watch some guy ahead of me who then is either long or short 8 feet.

Embrace the challenge of the game and you will love it more than if some technological wonder does it for you. And while I don’t use it on the course, I have an old H&B (Powerbilt) putter that I practice inside as a good result with it requires a pure stroke.

Hey, let’s make the game harder. After all, golf’s founding fathers never envisioned a hybrid, a 460cc driver, forgiving irons, etc. And they never envisioned that golfers would actually work out & get stronger. Absolutely don’t get your logic. Should I go out & buy blades & balata balls & then work on my “skills” to get better?

Look, you’re entitled to your opinion. I just think it makes absolutely no sense & takes potential enjoyment out of the game

I’ve owned everything out there over the years and most recently a Bettinardi. I’ve never been a “bad” putter but felt I missed more than I should. Fast forward to this year I got fitted for and picked up a Mezz 1. After a little bit of getting used to it I absolutely love this putter. Do I drain everything? Nope, but I do make a lot more 8-10 footers than I used to and that is putting more birdies on the card.

You are a 5 handicap and shot a 67. Man that putter must be automatic. Unless you shot a 67 on a Par-3 course, that is honestly pretty hard to believe if you are counting correctly.

Not going to spend $300-500 on a putter. I have a Cleveland Huntington Beach Soft 11c, as in center shafted. I am finding as I use it, I get a lot closer with this putter on long putts than I did with a conventionsl putter. I bought it as a 33″, but cut it to 29″, so as to get my eyes “over” the ball. I am 5′ 7″. I cut my last putter the same way, played with that putter for 20 years. It was a Carbite ZH “Polar Balanced” putter. Still a good putter, but I updated my bag, so putter too.

I used to go through 2-3 putters every year looking for the “perfect” one before settling on the DF 2.1 two years ago. I was properly fitted and I’ve never looked back. I test all my putters at home using a SwingByte swing analyzer and the DF 2.1, by far, has the lowest deviation in face-at-address versus face-at-impact. That means I’m able to start the ball nearer to my intended line better than any putter I’ve tested. I totally get the interest in aesthetics and how the putter looks, but when its performance is so outstanding I guess I’m able to look past how it looks..

I can putt with anything. Confidence in making the putt I guess is 90%
I believe that to release the toe of putter at impact puts a true roll on the ball as long that it is balanced, I don’t think that to square the face of the putter at impact is the right idea.

I have the DF2.1 w/stock shaft – this putter has totally changed my putting, regardless of whether lag, sidehill, downhill or somewhat straight. You will become better with this one! As for aestethics; this baby will grow on you and become more endearing with each day you use it! Like Secretariat, nobody liked his looks at the sale, and therefore he was not sold. But, when they saw him run and win, they loved him. So it is with this putter….

I gamed the DF2.1 for a year and a half. The size and shape didn’t bother me. With it, I was able to keep the face square better than any other putter I’ve owned (and that includes Scottys, Evnroll, TM Spyders, Ping, Yes, etc). It got me closer to the hole with every putt. I recently replaced it with the LAB Mezz.1. It’s also aesthetically challenged, but it’s also the most stable putter I’ve ever tried, including the DF2.1.. It is rock solid. The ball always starts on the line I intended. My up-and-down percentage is up and so is holes per 3-putt (according to my Shot Scope data). It takes a while to adjust to the LAB putters, but it’s surprising how many times I think “OMG, that’s a great putt!” when I’m watching MY ball roll toward the hole.

I looked and tried at the LAB putter when I was at Club Champion. I wasn’t fit for it but I did like the concept and putted well. Thinking about how such a big head would fit in my bag was what steered me away from it as I didn’t see it obviously better than the Scotty C 5..5 I went with.

After having had the DF for a bit and now gaming the ERZ. , I much prefer the the ER over the DF. The thing I didn’t like about the DF is the ball just felt and sounded dead off the face. Never could dial in distance control. The ER shape looks more pleasing to MY eyes , has a better sound and feel, and I actually love that I don’t have to bend down and pick up the gimmie putts. With the ER face technology, the putts stay on the intended line no matter where you hit them and mostly maintain their speed.. This article seemed very DF biased since you currently game it. I like how you mention all the tech in the DF, but for the ER, you just say “um yeah…there’s some patent tech in there”. Both putters do remove some variables so over to he long run, you’ll hole more putts. Depends on looks, feel, tech that you prefer.

I’m currently using the DF 2.1 (got it about a month ago). It actually replaced my Evnroll CS7 (enjoyed that for 4 years or so). Intentionally or not I agree this article had a LAB DF bias. That’s unfortunate because I’m really interested in learning more about the ER-Z. Such a radical design. I would encourage Mr. Bishop to take this as a constructive observation for future articles.

I am intrigued by the L.A.B. approach to putting but can’t get past the aesthetic of the Direct Force 2.1. The mind is a huge part of the equation, so aesthetics play a part in confidence and comfort over a putt. That said, I am interested in the Mezz.1 which is not quite as bulky looking. Any chance you will be doing a detailed review on it? Thanks…

I have had my L.A.B. putter for 12 months and my handicap has dropped 6 shots in that time. The previous 30 years and probably 10 different putters, had no such change. At an average of 30 putts per round, it has made a huge difference. Hope that helps.

While these two putters may be great at a consistent zero deviation angle to the ball, that will NOT improve most golfers putting stats
MOST putts are not straight straight lines, there is break in them. The major challenge for golfers is reading the degree of break and then figuring out speed of putt plus angle of deflection
The majority of Sunday warriors either over or under read these variables. A magic putter will not help in this area. It’s the human brain computer that solves that !!!

i would say that every single putt is a straight putt. of course there is break but your only job is to start the ball on a line the the rest is out of your hands. you can read greens as good as you want but if you cant hit your start line it’s all for not.

I disagree. Been gaming the df21 for almost a month now. In the last week I’ve noticed a significant improvement in made putts. Because this putter doesn’t deviate due to face twist I can count on a true roll. That allows me to read the putts better as I know the face is no longer a factor.

I have both- I don’t like the sound of either and really don’t like that the EvnRoll hole acts as a suction cup for picking up balls. Both are incredibly stable and swing back and forth very easily. Killer putters for someone with zero confidence inside 15 feet. Takes awhile to get a feel for lag putting though.

An excellent question, Steve. It’s funny because I played in a two man this weekend…with a slippery, right-to-left 3 footer for Eagle. The ball comes off extremely well with the DF 2.1, so there is a learning curve with speed control. Thank you for the question!
