Most Wanted Golf Courses – Hawaii

Like You Need An Excuse

Seriously? Like any of us need a reason to visit Hawaii. Chances are that most of us would be happy to spend a week or two (or forever) in the islands, even if there wasn’t so much as a pitch and putt within 1000 nautical miles of the beach.

But hey, Hawaii is paradise, and what’s paradise with out a healthy selection of immaculately maintained all-world golf courses with ocean views? As if Hawaii didn’t have enough going for it, it also has some of the picturesque golf you’re likely to find anywhere. There’s a little something for everyone on the islands, the only real question is which courses should you play.

To build our list of the best golf destinations in Hawaii, we turned to TheGrint and to real golfers just like you.

About Our Rankings

To generate our rankings, we used data from TheGrint, a golf handicap and stat tracking service that also allows golfers to rate the courses they play. Here are the pertinent details:

  • Ranking derived from over 200,000 golf course reviews
  • Only reviews from the last 365 days are considered
  • A course must have a minimum of 30 reviews is required in order to qualify for ranking

Nearly every aspect of a golf course review is subjective and there’s always going to be a difference of opinion, so healthy (and hopefully polite) debate is to be expected.

Would be nice to see a similar list for golf courses in my home county Sweden!

Played Ko’olua on Ohau last November, a brutal, tight layout, none of the fairways have a first cut of rough, just jungle lining the fairways! The course is located at the base of a mountain range with sheer cliffs making it spectacular for views!

You’re correct… Ko’olua is one of the greatest most distinctive courses in Hawaii. I’ve played the others and I’d put it above all of them as a pure golf challenge- but nobody knows about it.
Also, the Prince Course on Kauai is one of the top three in the Islands.

Curious if you ever even played Hoakalei Country Club which is located on the island of Oahu? If not….drop me an email so that I can get you out there. I think your ratings might be quickly readjusted if you played this course.

i’ve played these, i live here, for me, plantation, wailua, kiele (or whatever they call themselves now), maunalani south, hualalai, wailea orange, makena, maunakea, ocean/lakes princeville, prince (when maintained). lost greats, makaha west, a giant field of tall grass now, leilehua, redone greens and rampant tree cutting, so sad.

So Glad Poipu Bay was tops on this list. Played it last December and it was in such terrific condition. Had a great time with my Dad. Beautiful views, fun layout.

Mauna Lani North is a much better course than South even though the South has a few dramatic ocean holes.

I’m thinking this list needs MGS forum testers to certify the authenticity of these rankings. Being the selfless guy that I am, i will happily be “forced” to take a trip out to test these. I’ve only played Makena with rented clubs, and it was awesome.

Played a few of these; I’d replace Kaanapali with Ko’olau.

Ko’olau is the only golf course I’ve ever played where the starter asks if you have at least a dozen balls with you. Yes you could easily lose that many. Very tough course.

Where in The Challenge @ Manele on Lanai? This list is void without it.

I’ve only been to Hawaii once (5 years ago), but was on the Big Island and got to play the South Course at Mauna Lani. Fantastic course and I still have my pic from the tee box on 15 (hole shown above) as my computer background. Simply gorgeous!
