MyGolfSpy Exclusive Deal – Save Sitewide at Golf Mechanix

Late last year we announced that we’d partnered with Golf Mechanix and named them the official tool and gauge supplier for MyGolfSpy.

For those who might not be familiar with Golf Mechanix, it is the industry’s leading producer of golf tools and gauges. Golf Mechanix supplies OEMs, clubmakers, consumers, and of course, MyGolfSpy. Among other things, Golf Mechanix has provided MyGolfSpy bending machines, Lie/Loft gauges, Shaft Profilers, Swing Weight Scales and a new CG/MOI machine. These are tools that help us gather another layer of information from the clubs we test.

In the coming weeks we’ll begin to share some of the Golf Mechanix powered data we gathered during our recent driver test. Similar information will be shared for subsequent tests; giving you additional insight into the clubs on the rack at your local golf shop.

It goes without saying that we hope you’ll find the additional information useful, and that’s great, but we also want you to know that, for those who want to take advantage of it, MyGolfSpy’s partnership with GolfMechanix offers something of direct benefit to you as well.

Save 15% Sitewide

From time to time GolfMechanix will offer exclusive discounts on clubmaking/repair tools to MyGolfSpy readers. This first one is particularly exciting. MyGolfSpy readers save 15%, sitewide through June 30, 2017. No restrictions or exclusions.

Just use code: Spy2017 at checkout (note: the code is case sensitive).

For technical reasons; you must create an account before you can redeem the code at checkout.

Just to be clear, this offer is good for all MyGolfSpy readers. That includes professionals looking to upgrade to the latest technology, current hobbyists who have been looking for the right time to buy their next tool (or their first big tool), and beginners in waiting who’ve been thinking about getting started doing it yourself.

It’s that last group I want to speak to directly.

The truth is that the time I spend in my workshop is some of the most enjoyable and most rewarding aspects of my job. I love that sometimes I have to build clubs for work. Whether it’s prepping product for testing, or taking something I’ve torn apart and rebuilt again out to the golf course, playing with clubs I’ve worked on myself is immensely satisfying.

Clubmaking-4

To give you a sense of the type of work I do, within the last few weeks I’ve rebuilt my variable length iron set with Project X LZ shafts, gripped them with GolfPride MCC Plus 4 ALIGN grips, and bent them back to spec. I put a new shaft in my club’s assistant pro’s Titleist driver and prepped Matrix MFSF Series shafts for testing. The important thing is that I loved every minute of the work.

What I’d really like to see happen is for some of you who have thought about getting into clubmaking will take advantage of this opportunity to get started. There’s no right tool (or tools) to get you started. Think about what you wish you could to do yourself, and then get what you need to make it happen.

If you love trying new shafts and swapping them between clubs, think about a Shaft Extractor and the Extraction Bolt Kit.

If you want to regrip your clubs (and all of your friends’ too), a Gripping Station or a shaft clamp might be a good place to start.

Whether you want a single tool, or want to save even more and buy one of Golf Mechanix’s pre-bundled Tool Kits, they can help get you started.

Start small, start big, or start somewhere in-between…just start. Take the leap, start building YOUR golf workshop, start getting your hands dirty, start doing more of your club work, and start enjoying the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

I’m guessing you’ll love it every bit as much as I do.

I’d definitely be interested in the lie & loft kit, but not sure if I can justify spending the money right now or not. I went to a fitter in Feb to do a bag analysis and dial all of my gaps, but I’d love to know with absolute certainty that my lofts and lie angles are exactly where I want them to be…

I used to build clubs when I could get the parts from Golf Smith. I even took a 2 day course from them–which was great!!!

I’ve built several sets of clubs for myself and I have very little in terms of speciality equipment. If I had clubs that required through bore or special “adjustable ferrule”, then yes I’d probably have to have some specialized equipment. But I get by with a dremel, razor blade and sandpaper for almost everything I do.
Usually when I want to try different shaft lengths, I usually start long and work my way down to what works best. If I need to lengthen a shaft, I sacrifice the grip and put an extension plug and get it to where I need and go from there.
The only piece of equipment I wish I had was a shaft spliner, but I do that best I can by rolling it and pushing down on both ends at the same time. It’s not fancy, but it works well enough for me. But yet again, I’m not making clubs for others.
If people have the time and the interest to learn how to do it I highly recommend the experience!

      Tony,
Thank you for encouraging others to get involved in the golf club crafting art/business. I have been a club crafter/fitter/teacher/designer for 25+ years, mostly working with a number of our fine Military Charities(Medal of Honor Society, USO of N Carolina, Warriors for Freedom). We currently have our own indoor studio/ hitting bay. We invite our Nations Hero’s (Veteran’s) to stay with us and go thru a complete fitting. We then custom build a complete set of fitted golf clubs, (never a cost to our Vet’s) very rewarding. We currently run a golf Fitting Academy on our property in Scottsdale AZ.

I live in a small town there isn’t anybody to do it so I learned the basics from youtube and what not. It is a lot of fun, I reshafted every club in my bag so far and they work great. My work is on the fly and off the cuff if you will…. but it has worked thus far.

I’ve built a number of clubs albeit without the real fancy equipment. I did make my own shaft spine finder and found that most graphite shafts do have a spine and some have a very significant spine. I also learned that the single most important objective is to build a club that won’t fall apart. To that end shaft and hosel preparation is critical along with using quality epoxy. I never built drivers because I was convinced (perhaps wrongly) that that the component driver heads offered no advantage over the better brands. I did find that component irons could be just as good or better than the store brands. Also, if you don’t understand your fit (lie, shaft character, etc.) building your own clubs works no better than the off the-shelf variety.

A little off topic. I understand more shaft length can deliver more distance…but, I’d like to see a test where the same equipment takes a 1/2, full 1″ and more with drivers to see how accuracy, distance and the secret sauce: confidence makes a difference. I believe squaring up properly is the biggest determinent for distance/accuracy; I believe Sergio, Dustin Johnson, Jimmy Walker, Bubba (44″), Tiger at his longest (43″) and others have done this. (I know, with their club head speed they still kill it at shorter lengths). But I think data will demonstrate more accuracy, and some cases more distance because the ‘square up’ effect, weight transference and seeing the ball better. Can you do this test?

I built my irons in my garage. I enjoyed the process and the satisfaction. and whenever I get a whim to try a new idea (e.g. graphite shaft in my driving iron versus steel shaft) I just do it. I’d love that digital lie/loft tool though! #bigbucks
