Are you a Modern Golfer?

Are you a Modern Golfer?

What is a Modern Golfer?  What does he look like?  What type of golf equipment does he play?

Are you a Modern Golfer?

Let’s find out.

MyGolfSpy’s Modern Independent Golfer is an early influencer, people hear it from him; he starts the trends not the other way around. The Modern Independent will not compromise and therefore likes to make a strong connection with the brands he chooses. He supports people who have put blood sweat and tears into their products. He only spends his money on the things he’s truly passionate about and demands the same passion go into the quality of what he buys.

The Modern Independent Golfer is also a contrarian, a non-conformist, or simply put, opposed to the popular vote. He is sick of his playing companions constantly badgering him about not playing Callaway, or Cobra or PING. They haven’t heard of his newfangled brands and therefore they’re sub par to what they have in the bag.

MyGolfSpy’s Modern Independent Golfer is fed up with the claims that if your not a BIG name, well then you can’t possibly be any good.

So we rounded up 5 brands we know best represent his passion, his personality and pizzaz.

To All Modern Golfers…we hope you enjoy #ProjectMG

Bombtech

bombtech

Fed up with his local builder and 7th broken driver in 2 months, Tyler “Sully” Sullivan threw his hands in the air and said enough is enough. It was that moment in 2011 when he founded BombTech Golf, reached out to the University of Vermont and began engineering the Grenade Driver. After three years on the market Sully believes he can’t design a driver that outperforms the Grenade, so he won’t just release a newer model… It’s that simple.

Our Modern Golfer likes Sully’s average guy attitude and his passion that everyone is entitled to premium golf equipment with the quality and performance of the major OEM’s. Sully’s speaks with conviction when he says “our golf clubs will help you play to the best of your ability.” This passion and commitment is why the MG is recommending the Bombtech Grenade as his driver of choice.

Vega

vega

100 years ago the first golf course in Japan was built in Kobe, an area renowned for its metal work, especially in the forging of Samurai swords. Over time these forging techniques were passed down through generations until it was realized they could be adapted to create another precision instrument, the golf club. One of these expert craftsmen soon returned to his home town of Ichikawa and began honing the finest golf clubs ever made, it was then Vega Golf was born…

Golf clubs forged by the techniques of the great Samurai sword masters? The Modern Independent says sign me up. Who’s going to pass on a brand loaded with such history, that plays as good as it’s legend?

The MG has chosen Vega’s VC-01, a traditional small forged cavity design that will appeal to a large variety of golfers. Vega has paired the VC-01 with a high quality steel and very smooth Shimada shaft, as well as a quality velvet grip by Iguana.

Renegar

renegar

“Bob Renegar is one of the smartest wedge & design guys I’ve ever met” – Adam Beach MGS

So there’s that.

When the boss at MyGolfSpy has such a deep rooted belief in a product the Modern Independent takes notice, which has lead him to the stunning Renegar RxF Tour Proto Precision-Forged wedges. The RxF is a 5-Step Precision-Forged club head from very soft 1025C carbon steel which they want you to know is a true forging not some form-forged misrepresentation.

Renegar’s wedges feature a patented sole design developed over 20+ years by an experienced professional club designer. It provides the greatly improved playability of a lower leading edge but with 5 different bounce surfaces (and angles) that are uniquely designed to help the player in every conceivable short game situation. Renegar have paired the RxF with KBS Wedge shafts and Lamkin 3Gen short game grips.

Tyson Lamb – “Lamb Crafted”

tyson lamb

The kid who started customizing, or “pimping” clubs for friends in high school has finally come to realize his dream; hand making putters from the finest of materials right at home in America. He started in a garage and recently moved to his own shop, which you can check out via his Instagram.

Tyson Lamb knows that retail design and technology has pushed puters too far, otherwise, as he says, “why are there not more guys on tour winning with “spaceship” style putters”?

Tyson believes in 3 core principles of putting:

  1. Every great putter has a routine
  2. “Roll the line” and you will learn to troubleshoot bad putting rounds
  3. Great putters don’t change putters

His 3 core principles prove consistency is the most important part of putting – control as much as you can and let the ball fall into the hole. So Tyson builds putters to truly fit the player’s stroke.

All his 303 American stainless steel is sourced from within the country, he doesn’t have to double age it, or teach it german. He’ll also finish your putter with the finest of design details or stampings because as he likes to say, “I’m a putter artist.”

Volvik

volvik

What’s more contrarian than colored balls, period? Seriously what’s more different? Volvik isn’t quite a regular household name yet in North America, which makes them perfect for our Modern Independent Golfer. Volvik is no slouch either however, having won on multiple tours, at the highest level globally.

These are the balls certain to make you the center of conversation amongst your playing partners. If there’s anything the Modern Independant likes, is to be is the center of attention and start the trends.

Don’t like colors? Volvik also offer what they dub “White Color” options, which are whites with almost a pearl sheen. Don’t need a tour ball like the Vista Tour series? Volvik have you covered there as well with their Crystal, S3, S4 and DS 77 series.

So, do you think you’re a Modern Golfer now?

Answer is no, no, no. I like the traditional OEMs and style but am not afraid to test new stuff. However will not game neon colored clubs or balls.

The Lamb putter website link is not working, it takes one to a belt and buckle manufacturer. I am new to golf and I very much appreciate the independent testing that is as objective as possible at MGS. However, any such testing cannot answer the most important question we all have: Whether the “best” club/equipment is the right one for me? Testing may give us options to experiment with to find out what works best for us and it may not always be top rated product in any testing condition unless of course the person tested it himself. With this caveat, I want to write about my great personal experience with Bombtech Golf. I had called them two years ago and I spoke with Sully about what I was looking for as a rank beginner. He listened patiently, cut the length of the club to make it more manageable and sold me a “Demo” for a significant discount with an offer to return it if it did not work for me. From a small company, this was exceptional customer service and I like the driver very much. I have since purchased few other drivers as most of us do but here is my point:
Most of us play golf to enjoy the time we spend doing it and not necessarily to win championships, of course we want to play better but the overarching principle is fun and not performance. For us, there are very many options out there and we need not restrict ourselves to what the “experts” deem as the top club/what have you. For a fun golfer, having a great story, splash of color, being able to talk to the entrepreneur, trying out different companies are all part of the fun so I applaud MGS article on the Modern Golfer, I may have titled it the Fun Golfer. The average golf club/product today is vastly superior to what may have been available even a decade ago and chasing this illusion of the “Best” may take away from just playing golf and having a fun time with friends and family and it is great to get teased about pink golf balls or outsize putters and one can definitely blame the outrageous slice on the less than #1 golf club.
To the next round of fun!

Strange, I just assumed the modern golfer would be the guy who uses all available information (like mgs reviews) to game the best possible equipment. Last I checked the grenade wouldn’t be on that list. So are we just defining the modern golfer as someone who is simply trying to use relatively obscure brands (to most of the general public) just for the sake of using them with no regard for how they perform?
      Oh and.

We are not praising anyone. What we are doing is highlighting products that fit a certain type of golfer. We care about performance, but we are not oblivious to the fact that some golfers like to see other alternatives.

But seriously, I’d laugh at his hipster Bombtech driver and tell him to go check out how it performed in MGS’ MW Driver tests. Then tell him where he can put it.

Seriously, the Grenade? After it’s showing in the test this year? And this is the same “Sully” who got slagged by the site in 2014 for not submitting a driver? Are you guys all in the midst of alcoholic blackouts or something?

I don’t want to be the Modern Golfer, but I sure do hope I get matched up against him with some money on the line. His choice in drivers sucks, and the chances he can actually handle those Vegas are probably infinitesimal.

      Reply

      Joe Golfer

I’m not sticking up for the quality of the Grenade driver, as I’ve never even seen one.
That said, I do recall the owner stating that the reason he did not submit a driver for testing was because he did not yet have the 9* lofted driver ready for submission or testing.
At the time, the company was fairly new and had only a 10.5* model available, which wouldn’t suit a certain percentage of the testers.
Perhaps in a future test, he’ll submit both lofts, as they are both available now, and a fairer assessment will be made.
This driver may do better, it may do worse, but it should have the opportunity to be tested again now that the 9* loft is available.

      Dave S

Fair, but MGS has already done the research and written an article explaining how 99% of golfers need to use MORE loft, not less. In all likelihood, the 10.5 degree would perform better than the 9 for the tester population.

I’m all for independent companies, b/c sometimes they can do things larger, more bureaucratic companies can’t (red tape and such), but I also understand industry and capitalism and economics. There is a very good reason the top 5 golf companies are in that position. They dedicate thousands of man-hours a year to R&D and product production. Yes, they also can spend more on marketing and obtaining shelf space, but they wouldn’t have that money to spend if their products didn’t perform.

Thinking that an independent company can come out with a better wedge or ball or hybrid, etc. is akin to thinking a single day-trader can come up with a trading methodology or algorithm that will allow him to outperform Goldman Sachs. It’s certainly possible that this independent trader is a genius who’s stumbled upon something no one else thought of, but it’s highly highly unlikely. Obtaining some form of arbitrage in the golf industry is nearly as difficult b/c the parameters within which you have to work are so tight.

The one space where independent companies may be able to compete is price. This seems odd given the economies of scale that large OEMs have, but if you fundamentally change the game – like some companies are doing with direct-to-consumer pricing models (i.e. Snell, Hopkins) – you can undercut the big boys who rely on the retail distribution train.

Let’s set the record straight so there is no he said she said.

      – Sully contacted us stating he wanted us to review his driver 2 years ago.

      – we emailed giving specs of what was needed and how we tested.

      – Sully then backed out of the test.

      – then this year we felt enough golfers wanted to see this driver tested against the claims he was making

      – we invited Sully to participate in the 2015 test

      – he declined

      – we sent a “secret shopper” to buy the drivers direct

      – he found out we did this and then and only then sent us drivers and the other loft to test.

      – we tested the driver

      – you can view the results: http://mygolfspy.com/2015-most-wanted-driver-overall-awards/

      * Both lofts were tested.

Well independent is the point being thrown across, but all these brands are not what I would consider independent.

      VEGA
Sure they want to sell you on the fantasy of fine forged Japanese samurai swords, but most of us can see through vegas sales pitch

Vega is made by kyoei forging works Co, who have been forging everything from cutlery to Pistons and connecting Rods for automotive use for the last 100 years, golf heads are not kyoei’s bread and butter, nor are they the heritage behind the company who produces vegas club heads.

Hardly an independent golf brand with its own independent golf club head forging facilities.

      Volvik

I read stories about volvik being asias number one ball manufacturer, and also of troubled times at volvik inc, wich I belive was owned by dunlop/slazenger at one point and then a takeover by a new CEO who seemed to actually be into the product his company produces, as they filed many patents shortly after he took control.

GREAT! But where is the information on who owns/partially volvik/ volviks manufacturing facilities? It isnt out for the public to see?

That usually means theres more to the sales pitch than we know, and with the fairly big corporate structure volvik has, I dont think its all “small independent manufacturer” like we are being lead to believe

Notice volvik doesnt say a word about where the balls are made, no information, pictures etc on volviks manufacturing facilities etc.

As far as I know they also own mining operations likely under another name or owned by other corporation who partner with volvik.

I dont think Ide be far off to think that volviks mining operations are the bread and butter that allow them to have such a worldwide presence in the golf ball market.

I could very well be way off here but there isnt enough information out there to tell the customer WHO VOLVIK really is.

      Bombtech

University engineered, assembled in Vermont, thats it thats all.

Not sure how you are an independent company if you dont own your manufacturing facilities.

Bombtech is a design brand with a logo, they have a university engineer the product(not very independent) and then have a factory in likely Asia manufacture the product(also not very independent)

So what do they do at bombtech then? Well they do the logo, the marketing, and the gluing of the products lol.

      RENEGAR

Ex R&d guy for big name brands, they dont make there own product. They once again are a logo/marketing company that sells product manufactured by another company, likely OE suppliers/manufacturers.

      TYSON LAMB

Probably the definition of independent. Small shop, everything done in house by them, INDEPENDENT and they are proud of it!

MYGOLFSPY: ive been a part of the ski/snowboard industry for going on 15 years not, and we have seen the “independent company” theme come and go, and it has helped to create nothing but animosity between the real independent manufacturer and those who are a marketing/logo company wich sells products made by another company.

My perfect example are these two articles

      http://www.illicitsnowboarding.com/2011/10/11-brands-1-snowboard-and-270-price.html?m=1

Renegar Wedges are designed by Bob Renegar, and are covered by several patents. It’s hardly a white label product. Regarding who actually manufacturers the product…

Do you think TaylorMade, Callaway, etc., etc., have their own manufacturing facilities? Big company, small company, they all use overseas plants owned by somebody else.

      Dave S

Totally agree with Aaron, but I still love MGS even if this article was a glorified ad for these “independent” companies. Hipster Golfer 101 lol that’s good stuff… but so true.

      MyGolfSpy

Not a single company in this article paid to be in this article. Just clarifying that this is not a glorified ad. This was done for the reasons already mentioned and those reasons only.

      Regis

All True but the TMAG’s , Callaway’s etc. all have retail presence where the avid golfer (hipster or not) can go look at the product, maybe demo it etc. I’ve purchased several indie products over my Walter Mitty sporting career from fly rods , reels and lines to Ski boots and of course golf products. Some have had incredible staying power and have been worth the experiment. Other’s Meh…….

As a left handed golfer, I guess I am not a modern golfer. Apart from the golfballs there is not one thing on this list that would give me enough options to buy. I own a bombtech driver btw. But after playing with it for a bit and realizing that I am better off with a 9 degree driver as opposed to a 10.5, it now sits in basement as a decorative talking piece. Good product, not enough choice.

If you didn’t lack talent, you’d learn to swing right handed and then you could buy the RH 9* driver. I’ve been playing both right and left handed for some time now. If you can’t do both, find a new hobby. This one is too difficult for hou.
