MyGolfSpy’s 10 Most Wanted Golf Courses – Florida

The Best Courses You Can Actually Play

Our mission is to inform and protect the golf consumer.  Up until this point on MyGolfSpy our data-driven or #DataCratic as we like to call it “Most Wanted” Series has been based on hard and soft goods.  Mostly things you can buy.  Today that changes.  We’re always pushing to improve how we work, looking for ways to use the newest technology in media to deliver our content and messages to today’s golfers wants and needs.

You have spoke up and told us you would like us to also review golf courses so today we are going to do just that for you.  We will begin by ranking the Top-10 courses in the Top 10 Golf States.  We will conclude this with the “Top 100 Most Wanted Golf Courses in The US.”

We begin with Florida.

Florida isn’t just home to more than 1000 golf courses, it’s home to some of the very best golf courses in the entire United States. Sawgrass, Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill, and of course, the new and expanding Streamsong Resort are just a few of the reasons golfers have to visit The Sunshine State.

From resort courses like those found at Reunion and Disney, to world class courses well off the beaten path, there’s plenty of golf to choose from in Florida. We want to help you narrow your destinations to only the very best courses in the state.

To build our list of  the Most Wanted Golf Courses in Florida we used our #DataCratic process and stats from our partners at the TheGrint, a golf handicap and stat tracking service, whose extensive database contains more than 120,000 golf course reviews submitted by average golfers like you.  Everything we do and say has a foundation on cold, hard data.  Our conclusions are always based on the facts and the numbers.

Our rankings are comprised exclusively of courses you can actually play. No memberships required, everything on our list is accessible to the general public.

Here are the 10 Most Wanted Golf Courses in Florida.

#1 Streamsong Resort (Blue)

florida-1

“With its multiple elevation changes, fairways navigating wild grasses and deep-water ponds, and huge bunkers that roll off of towering sand dunes, Streamsong Blue seems designed by discovery rather than by intention. Created by Renaissance Golf Design’s renowned architect Tom Doak—who already has four designs ranked among the top 100 in the world—Streamsong Blue is equally destined for golfing greatness. It features spectacular terrain, with rises and falls in elevation, and contours that undulate.”

#2 Streamsong Resort (Red)

florida-2

“Simply put, Streamsong Red is like nothing you’ve ever played. Designed by the legendary team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw—architects of five designs in the Top 100 in the United States—Streamsong Red is an 18-hole masterpiece. With its 419 Bermuda Grass fairways winding through decades-old sand dunes, lakes, and natural bunkers, Streamsong ‘is naturally conducive to uncovering great golf holes,’ says Crenshaw, who himself is a two-time PGA Masters Champion.

#3 Bay Hill Club & Lodge

florida-3

“Open only to Club members and registered guests staying at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge, the breathtaking course sweeps across 270 acres along the shores of the Butler Chain of Lakes. The Champion, Challenger and Charger links feature 27 holes of tour championship golf, a challenging though fair test for both professionals and amateurs alike.”

#4 Turnberry Isle (Soffer Course)

florida-4

“Originally designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., Turnberry Isle Miami’s 18-hole championship courses – The Soffer and Miller Courses – have been re-interpreted by golf icon Raymond Floyd. With contoured fairways, clever doglegs, rolling greens, perfectly carved bunkers, strategically placed water features and a variety of elevation changes to challenge and enthrall casual golfers and enthusiasts alike, Turnberry Isle Miami is a showcase of the best in Florida golf.”

#5 Grand Cypress (New Course)

florida-5

“The New Course is Jack Nicklaus’ tribute and homage to the famed Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland. This Scottish links masterpiece is complete with double greens, stone bridges and walls, gorse mounds, burns, and pot bunkers as deep as 12 feet.”

#6 TPC Sawgrass (Stadium Course)

florida-6

“Players find a selection of short, medium and long holes within the categories of par-3s, par-4s and par-5s; both right and left doglegs; and a course routing laid out so no two consecutive holes ever play in the same direction. With its signature island green on the par-3, 17th hole being one of the most recognized in golf, this legendary track has captured the imagination of golf fans all over the world and is consistently named among the top golf courses worldwide.”

#7 World Woods Golf Club (Pine Barrens)

florida-7

“Named for the many pine trees that line its length, the acclaimed layout is sculpted from an expansive pine forest with surprising and dramatic changes in elevation. The large manicured fairways framed by expansive untamed waste bunkering create a unique golf experience. The course’s style has been compared to that of Pine Valley in New Jersey – the consensus No. 1 course in the world. Pine Barrens offers many intimidating, yet, enjoyable holes.”

#8 Sarasota National Golf Club

florida-8

“The major summer renovation project on the golf course will give players a new perspective on how to play the layout. All 110 bunkers were renovated with glistening white sand, which will challenge even the very best of players. As always, the immaculate TifEagle greens have been professionally maintained and groomed for some of best playing surfaces in southwest Florida.”

#9 World Golf Village (King and Bear)

florida-9

“When these two Hall of famers put aside their legendary rivalry, they created a beautiful, challenging, and truly remarkable golf course in St Augustine Florida. Measuring 7,279 yards from the stone tees and 5,119 yards from the green tees, this course is sure to challenge the skilled golfer while providing player-friendly conditions for the novice. This is a “driver’s” course, which should come as no surprise as both Palmer and Nicklaus wielded awesome power games in their primes. You’ll also experience the wide fairways of Nicklaus and the fast greens of Palmer.”

#10 Reunion Resort (Palmer)

florida-10

“Innovatively routed on hilly, roller coaster-like terrain, Arnold Palmer’s 6,916 yard, par 72 Signature Course boasts dramatic elevation changes – up to 50 feet in some places – creating a unique variety of risk/reward shots.”

I thought PGA National Champion was one of my top 5 in the world. .
That said the Palmer was good, great finish. Too many houses.
The Haig course, “The Squire” as it is now known. When you stay there they keep trying to push you here it is pure crap. As a guest you are defiantly 2nd tier player. Fight for dye and Palmer. Better yet I’d pay the surcharge to stay on the big course which despite being known as “tight” is far more spacious than the other 2 and damn fun.

I am 74 and have been playing for 3 years. I have a 30 handicap and am on a fixed income.

I go back and forth from Western N.C. and Central Florida, rarely the Palm Beaches.

So, you folks out there – what courses in the above areas would be fun for me to play?

Can’t argue with the selections. While not a top 10, I was hoping Spy would check out the crazy Jack Nicklaus designed track in Estero…OLD CORKSCREW. Just a wild layout with the most undulating greens in the state.

Pricing is important no doubt but it’s not the factor on any top ten list that I’ve ever seen. Having written there are many great Florida courses that can be played for a song by Florida Residents in the off and shoulder seasons.

Either World Woods course is list worthy (both are in the top 100 you can play in the Country) and both can be played for under $50 by Florida residents almost year round if you keep your eyes open. Southern Dunes is another great track in Central Florida that can be played for under $50. TPC Tampa has approached the $50 mark at times as well. Same holds true for Orange County National and doubly so if you life in Central Florida. Because there are so many great courses in Florida it’s very easy to set up an alternative list to the one offered here and the alternative would be just as good. I’m guessing one could work up an under $60 list that would be remarkable.

Seems to be a real geographic bias with no panhandle courses mentioned. There must be something worth playing there. My personal choices:
      1. Streamsong Blue
      2. Streamsong Red
Streamsong is an incredibly unique experience in Florida
      3. Orange County National Panther Lake
For those worried about value, just about the best deal going for stay and play
      4. Pga Village Dye
      5. Tiburon
      6. TPC Sawgrass
      7. Pine Barrens
Also great value but condition can be shaky
      8. Copperhead
      9. OCN Crooked Cat
      10. Ocean Course hammock Beach

      9.

I guess I can always dream. Your Top 10 List has only one course on it that is somewhat affordable, #7 World Woods Pine Barren. The others are so far out of my price range ithey are only in my dreams. I live only 15 minutes from Lake Jovita(on Richie’s List above) yet can only afford to play it once in a blue moon. Why not set a price parameter, say $50 and under, then go out and make a list of the Top Ten you can play?

That you represent the common guys (golfers), yet here you are showing us a list of courses that are out of reach for most of us. I can read the other guys everyday and see all the golf courses I can’t play. Yeah, they may allow public play, but that is not an indicator accessible bases on pocket book. Show us a list of great courses open to the public broken down by price range

Although I’ve never played any of the courses listed on your Top 10 list I would imagine that they would be out of the price range of the golfer such as myself on a fixed income. The King and Bear may be an exception to this as they do run specials every once in a while but the green fees are still over $100.00. Perhaps mygolfspy could list courses by green fees for the golfers like me.

These Top 10 lists are always subject to opinion and often ridiculed by we the average golfers. I live in Southwest Florida… the downside of Naples is all the great golf is private. Old Corkscrew in Estero belongs on this list, green complexes will drive you crazy but the course and its surroundings are stunning. If Hammock Bay is considered public, it belongs on the list for enjoyment value and conditions. The course has 18 solid holes without out a stupid hole in the bunch (hard to do with a completely flat piece of property. I would love to see a Top 10 list of courses we haven’t heard of. TPC Sawgrass and Bay Hi are beautiful but way over priced for people with day jobs.

How did Bay Hill, Palmer at reunion or the New course make this list??? One is in questionable condition all year except at PGA tour time, another isn’t even the fan favorite at its own resort and the new course is a driving range – which again, locals prefer the n/s/e courses over the new lol

I have gone to the PGA Show every year since 2005 and this past January I decided to take the trip out to Pine Barrens. It was a big disappointment. I am just not a fan of tricked up greens with huge swales and humps, bumps and tiers all fabricated by design not nature. I hate hitting a good shot to the middle of the green on a new course and having zero chance of a two putt. It is a real shame because the lay out is spectacular. If I wanted to play a beautiful lay out with silly and unnecessary undulating greens I could have just played Mystic Dunes again and saved myself the drive. If they combined the awesome greens from a new course I played, ChampionsGate CC, with the PB layout you would have something truly special.

I know that picking 10 in Florida is a tough job. So many private courses for locals, so when tourists come they end up at resorts where the prices are jacked up. Nice courses, but are they really worth it. I am sure that along with fun and condition, that value is also considered. These courses are fairly expensive in prime season.

Will we be seeing a hidden gem that is fun, challenging, and cost friendly for each state?

I wouldn’t put Grand Cypress new course in my top-30 as far as public courses go. Not even sure I would put it in my top-25 in the Orlando area. I like the course, but there are just far better designs within a 2-hour radius of Orlando like:

      TPC Sawgrass (stadium course)
      TPC Sawgrass (Dye Valley)
      World Woods (Pine Barrens)
      World Woods (Rolling Oaks)
      Mission Inn (El Campeon)
      Juliette Falls
      RedTail Club
      ChampionsGate CC
      Waldorf Astoria
      Ritz Carlton
      Falcon’s Fire
      Southern Dunes
      PGA Village (Wannamaker)
      PGA Village (Ryder)
      PGA Village (Dye)
      Bella Collina
      TPC Tampa
      Lake Jovita (South)
      Golf Club at Eaglebrooke
      LPGA International (Hills Course)
      OCN (Panther Lake)
      Black Diamond Ranch (Quarry)
      Innisbrook (Copper head)
      Orange Lake Resort (Legends)

Nice list – I’ve played just about every course on it and fully agree that they are superior to Grand Cypress New – Lost is the fact that the other 27 holes at Grand Cypress comprise a better design. The New is fun because its a homage to the Old Course but I wouldn’t begin to imagine it as one of the top courses in the state, not even close. Good condition certainly but top course? No!

Also the Streamsong courses are clearly making in roads. I’ve yet to have the pleasure but I constantly hear great things about them.

Is Black Diamond Ranch really considered a public course? If it is and it wasn’t listed as one of the top 10 courses in the state it would invalidate the survey IMO. I suspect it is not considered one though.

This list is a real disappointment and far from a true top ten list for FL. Springbok did a good job adding in some real top 10 courses. The fact you have Grand Cypress New course as #5 destroys any credibility this list could have. Here’s my take on the top 10.

      1. Streamsong Red
      2. Streamsong Blue
      3. TPC Sawgrass (Stadium)
      4. Black Diamond (Quarry)
      5. Hammock Beach (Ocean)
      6. Innisbrook (Copperhead)
      7. TPC Blue Monster
      8. Waldorf Astoria
      9. World Woods (Pine Barrens)
      10. Bay Hill

I really enjoy this site but the list you put out is way off and you may not agree with my list but I hope for any future course ratings you reach out and talk with people who live in the states and have played these courses to get real feedback.

      Ryan,

That is exactly what we did do. These were played by people just like yourself. And mostly made up of people that live in Florida and play these courses. That is what is considered real feedback from the masses of Floridians.

We totally understand that these type of lists will be argued, but this in our opinion is the best way to judge a course. By the largest sample size of data available with a consistent scoring system.

Played most of these courses; Streamsong Red & Blue UNDER Rated (not a typo), World Woods (all courses) has always been OVER rated in my opinion, and anywhere the Tour plays people want to give extra points (Innisbrook does not belong in the top 50).

Can we have a poll of the MGS Florida members? It may turn out to be different from these results. Having written that what this demonstrates is how spoiled we Floridians are. Here’s one top ten list, above me are another 8 and not mentioned yet are TPC Tampa, any of the PGA National courses or PGA golf village courses or LPGA National Courses or Disney Courses (over rated but not dogs), Southern Hills, Rolling Oaks (the other World Woods course), Doral, Inverness and on and on and on it goes – You could make a top 100 in Florida course list and still have left off some very good courses.

Oh and then there are the Private ones…… :)

I am not sure how the TheGrint data was applied here but the Streamsong courses are new and very different but also pricey. Caddies are strongly encouraged if not required. Bay Hill, when I played it you had to stay there in order to play it and it was also pricey. Being expensive is fine if they deliver the value to match the price. I find many course don’t deliver.

Best value course on this list have to be World Woods and Sarasota National. Although I was surprised to see Sarasota National on the list with so many great course in the Orlando area, Naples, and Ponte Vedra areas.

Ugh. Really? Have to disagree with some of your choices. My biggest gripe is your inclusion of the “New Course” at Grand Cypress. It is an abysmal course. It is supposed to be a links, but plays NOTHING like one. Instead you are left with a WIDE open course that is simple and just plain odd. If you paid me, I MIGHT play there… depending on how much you paid me, but I will probably throw up afterwards.

Reunion Palmer. Yes, it is the best of the Reunion courses. But top 10 in the state. Not by a loooooooong shot.

Bayhill? Maybe only around tournament time. But anytime other than that, it is a goat track, and probably the worst value for money course you will play.

King and Bear? Once again, best of the WGV courses, but top ten in state. A definite no.

I play mostly in Central FL, so I can’t really comment about the rest of the state, but here is a list of others you should consider

      1) Ritz Carlton – Grande Lakes
      2) Waldorf Astoria
      3) Black Diamond Ranch (Quarry)
      4) Innisbrook (Copper Head)
      5) Ocean Course at Hammock Beach
      6) Victoria Hills (Not the best of shape, but one of the best layouts in the state)
      7) Southern Dunes
      8) Orange County National (I personally prefer Crooked Cat)
