As We Predicted

Like we said before we are all for companies pushing the envelope of technology here at MyGolfSpy. We have become painfully numb to all the new releases over the past 5 or so years which look almost like identical replicas of the previous years model…except for some new fresh paint schemes and a new sole design.

And as we predicted back in 2008 where we gave you a glimpse into the future of golf club design we knew that Aerodynamics would be one of the main areas golf club manufacturers would be looking to push that proverbial envelope of technology. And Nike has taken a page from some of its successful golf club design predecessors (Porsche Design & Adams Golf) with its newest driver design.

Nike SQ MachSpeed (Pushing The Technology Envelope?)

The new Nike SQ Machspeed driver however seems to have taken the concept 1-step further…and that is by incorporating improved aerodynamics throughout the golf swing not only on certain spots of the downswing. Well that is the theory at least…we have of course not wind tunnel tested this thing yet to see the results ;) But Justin Leonard says he is hitting it 10-12 yards further. Wait a second…shouldn’t the average golfer be hitting 400 yard drives by now if all these 10-15 yard claims were true. Maybe my math is off…but I think I have been hearing these claims for about 15 years now which adds about 150 yards to everyone’s averages on my calculator.

Nevertheless we really like that Nike has at least tried to improve the functionality of the club…no matter what it looks like. And we look forward to test driving one to see if they do what they claim. As soon as we get our paws on one we will give you our brutally honest review as always.

P.S. – QUESTION: What do you guys think about the looks of this new driver?

I tested this out at the PGA tour shop near my house. I hit around 15 shots against a net, and all of them were square, solid hits. I think it looks fine as well. And im a 13 year old double bogey golfer. if i can hit straight with this, i bet you probably can too

I am a high school golfer in Wisconsin. Golf practice started 2 weeks ago and I’ve barely ever played golf before that in my life. When I teed up my driver, I’d hit about 100 yards on a good drive, and about 20 every other time due to a topped hit, pick my head up, etc. I went to a golf store and purchased this driver. The original position was set to neutral on the Nike Str8-fit technology. I was majorly slicing the ball and couldn’t hit very far still. I changed my stance a little, changed the head to 2 degrees less, and now I’m hitting straight and 250 yards. I don’t think I could ask for a better driver! It really looks awesome too!

I laugh everytime I hear some one whining about how they dont like the way the club looks. “Its ugly”, “I couldnt swing that thing” The very same guys that show up on the course looking like a fugitive from fashion prison! Yeah thats right, the same guys that cant match their socks are crying about how ugly a club is. If it works, who cares? It could look like an Edsel on an ugly stick as long as the results are pretty! Performance is what matters right?!?!. I cant look at it when I address the ball because its ugly! Please gentelmen, Are you really serious. Isnt your head supposed to be clear at address anyway? I’m not trying to date my clubs, just win with them!

the sole of the driver is unique, to say the least but i think people will warm up to the idea. but what really matters is howit looks at address and how it performs. i think it is one of the better looking square drivers out there. the aerodynamic concept seems ligitamite. i would assume it to be a solid driver, coming from nike. will this driver be a major standout in performance versus others? probably not but it should be good.

I recently Got to hit this new Mach Speed along with the rest of the new Drivers coming out in 2010. And I have to say that It’s Awesome it has a really hot face. And the ability to change shafts and angles is a real nice concept. The new nike mach speed is by far the hottest driver coming out in 2010. My second choice if you can;t get over the square look would be the 2010 Nike Victory Driver 400 cc the one Tiger is playing. For my third option I would go with the 2010
Callaway Diablo very Traditional look and easy to hit as callaway has been for years.

This is visually very unappealing to me. No markings on the top to line up to the sweet spot is an issue for me. Also, it just looks “clunky” to me. The speed slot on the side is exactly what Mr. Hogan did in 1959 (like chuck said)…basically nothing new under the Sun(just with better materials). Designed obsolescence is the whole marketing paradym for most companies offerings.

not sure where it is now but i remeber about a year ago taylormade released a statement that roughly said that for the majority of of player no clubhead design would change the aerodynamic characteristics would improve anything.
for a design to impact any statistic significantly(1-2 yards) a club head speed of about 300mph would be needed since the club head is so small and any channels for air to move through would have to be about half the size of the face in diameter for them to intake air.
nice looking club though and the str8 technology is cool

If Justin has this in play look here for the pics as I will send them to you as soon as I can get them to you. This entire Nike lineup looks awesome! I here there are new SQ hybrids that are absolutely going to blow everything out of the water and the Vr tour 400cc driver OMG!! And then this MachSpeed. I dont remember a Manufacturer that has a lineup like this ready to release in one year. What about the Method. The Method with 2 majors under its belt before its release. They must have had Tom Sites locked in the basement working 24 hrs a day because this stuff is awesome. Both the Vr’s and the Machspeed have Fairways to go with them that have already have a 1000000% stamp of of approval . I heard they will blow the 2007/2008 TM TP Burner Fairway out of the water by a mile and that has to be one of the best fairways to ever hit a fairway. My head starts spinning when I start thinking about the NIKE 2010 lineup. So we get a new Vr driver lineup, Machspeed driver, VR Fairways, Machspeed Fairways, NEW SQ Hybrids, Machspeed or SQ Irons I have only heard about, a new wedge thats coming but we have not watched close enough on tour to see it since I hear its being played, The Method Putter( 2 Majors! in one month) and a new footwear lineup that is so sweet I could of only dreamed of walking in those shoes. I had a Titleist Tour fitting that just went out the window very easily . I did not even have to give any thought to playing a 14 club Nike Bag next year. Thanks for the heads up on everything MyGolfSpy you guys rule!

Getting a little off the topic of this driver pics, which seem pretty nice to me, in comparison to the current driver.

I disagree with mygolfspy’s comments that square is the shape of the future. I agree that we now have more choices of shape, and that is a good thing, but I continue to play Adams A4 and Nickent 4DX and the club goes every bit as long (if not longer) than many of these square headed clubs (which I have played and enjoyed). The Adams speedline driver shows that pear shaped drivers are not dead at all. In fact, most PGA Pro’s do not play the square headed drivers, but that is mostly irrelevant to me.

The head is just one component to a good golf club. It has become a fairly even comparison between the various heads out there, so it really is whether it fits your eye or not. This new driver does not have an aiming line. I would prefer to see Nike do that.

choosing the right shaft and loft to maximize your swing is the real differentiator. I could care less if the head says Nike, Taylor Made, Titleist, Bob Burns, or anything else.

Hi Andy – I did not say square was the future I simply said that pear is out and golfers need to get used to seeing other shapes. Pear is not optimal from a engineering perspective and the more data they get and better software they have to show them this the more they realized this was true. That is why it will be a shape of the past. I personally do NOT think square will last but pear will not either.

Well I do not agree that it does look better than the Victory Red driver that was just leaked and i dont understand where Nike is going with this futuristic look. Why are woods starting to look more like a concept car than just a good ole pear shape that everyone has used since the dawn of golf. I can understand utilizing the new technology for distance and accuracy, but why the crazy colors and designs. Golf companys need to get back to just make a solid- feeling and looking head that someone can feel confident hitting. I just needed to express that.

Well the reason the shape is changing Rob…is because that shape just like other shapes of the past is no longer the most optimal shape for a driver to be. You will no longer see many pear shaped heads made…sorry but it is true.

Well, I think this is a better looking club than the Victory Red driver that MGS leaked a few articles ago. I’m not a big fan of square drivers, and frankly, I would think a rounded driver would be more aerodynamic than a square shaped driver, but the sole design is kinda of appealing looking to me. Kinda of reminds me of the air dams on the side of an expensive super car. I seriously doubt the extra 10-15 yards though.

I’m so sick of square. The benefit of that shape is wasted if it’s too ugly to put behind the golf ball. You could guarantee me 450 yards off the tee and I’d turn it down. I really don’t understand this design.

You would turn it down if it guaranteed you 450 yards and right down the middle? I highly doubt it.

what is wrong with you guys? who cares if the driver looks a little weird if its improving performance, besides Nike is a company that thrives on bringing new competitors to the sport and they probably dont care that much if some 65 year-old ass hole golfers are overly concerned with “this new fangled thingamajig” and who dislike innovation. If you gave me the choice between added speed, accuray, weight, and over all performance or aesthetics i would choose performance every time and youre a fool if you dont

I like it and im glad that nike has finally done something “right”. Almost all of my clubs are nike and they all perform better than any others ive tested, callaway, taylormade, to name a few. It seems that everytime nike comes out with something new all people do is bash it. Frankly im tired of it, because lets get real…they have to be doing something right if the #1 player in the world plays them, nevermind what he gets paid. Its nice to finally see nike getting some credit for pushing the envelope and for their ingenuity.

Looks like a sandwich with some aerodynamics on the sole of the club. Golf is what, 80% mental? I couldn’t swing this club it looks so bad. I think these designs are getting out of hand for 3 extra yards and 1 extra hit fairway. Yes, I know Leonard got 10-12 extra yards, but it will be interesting to see his performance on the President’s Cup next week. It’s crazy what players will say to promote the sales of clubs they are paid to endorse.

      I wonder………
