Nascar-ization of Golf

Anybody that has seen John Daly walk the fairways in recent years…is witness to what a human billboard looks like in the game of golf. For the most part this type of advertising was reserved for the Nascar industry. Where even a square inch on a dashboard cam is worth a couple years salary to most.

But in recent years the trend seems to be catching on in golf as well . And golfers aren’t complaining…not only are the great golfers finding lucrative contracts from sponsors but many golfers who struggle on the tour are as well. Many of the journeyman are finding out that there left sleeve is worth more then their actual golf game can earn…and especially if they are in contention for a major.

Here are some numbers to give you an idea of how lucrative the right arm of many golfers are worth. And if you ever wondered why we have to wear collars to play this game…look no further. But I wonder if the economy will have a lot more players sporting blank sleeves in ’09…what do you think?

Hat

($75,000 and up)

Many players make the hat they’ll wear part of a clubs-balls-bag-apparel deal. As a rule of thumb, the front of the hat, with its prime TV exposure, makes up half the total value. Tiger’s cap is part of a clothing deal with Nike worth $29 million a year. Semi-star Luke Donald got about $1 million a year to wear Mizuno’s logo on his cap, but that amount could quadruple if he wins the Masters. Golfers sell the sides of the cap for less than half as much as the front, and the back for as little as one-tenth.

Right Sleeve

($10,000 to $1 million)

This sleeve is less precious than the left because it gets less TV time, but some marketers prefer it because it shows up on a right-hander’s follow-through. For lefty Phil Mickelson, whose right side faces the target, this is the million-dollar sleeve.

Chest Pocket

($25,000 and up)

The best real estate south of the ears. You can get a no-name for the minimum, but even such second-tier stars as Luke Donald and John Daly (well he could) can command $250,000 or more for over-the-heart coverage.

Shoes

($10,000 to $30,000)

Footwear is cheaper than you’d think until you stop to think: You see shoes on TV only when a golfer goes into a hazard.

Back of the collar

(up to $650,000)

Jim Furyk signed a three-year, $2 million deal to wear a Johnnie Walker logo here. (That’s Johnnie Walker menswear—hard-liquor logos are a no-no.)

My name is Adam Beach. This place, this site, it’s more than just a business to me, it truly is an expression of who I am and what I believe in, down to my core. I feel the work I do is a reflection of who I am and the idea behind the work I do is more important than the work itself. You see, I don’t actually see myself in the golf business at all, I am in the business of caring. I am a guy who wakes up with one goal: do the right thing.

I am 75 years old and never needed a sponsor! My Dad, a 6 or 7 handicapper taught me to play and I was never nearly as good as my Dad, but I sponsored myself for over 50 years! I had immense enjoyment and played in over 125 private/corporate tournaments and won as a team player, either as a 2 man or 4 man (including women) and won significant money prizes, as well as trophies and equipment. I wouldn’t think of doing it any other way !! :)

My daughter at 14 carried a single digit handicap. I am a 4.5 handicap. You have NO chance to play professionally. Enjoy the game for what it is, a game, but this is not your career son.

Get some lessons. Forget about a career. I was a single digit handicap at 13 yo so you don’t have a prayer of playing professionally. Enjoy the sport for what it is, a game, not your career.

You’d think the shoes would go for more money.
Ecco sure got a lot of mileage when Freddy Couples wore their casual shoes, sans socks.
And Adidas got a ton of mileage when Justin Rose won twice recently while wearing their Adicross casual shoes.
I think in both of those particular cases, a lot of new shoes were sold after seeing them on tv.

I am also a laid off employee at YRC and am very upset with this company giving this pro
golfer 6 million dollars. How do we bring this to the attention of the general public.
This practice has to stop, please respond as I am willing to fight this stupid move by YRC,
we need to fight to get our payroll cuts back in our pockets where it belongs…..

Madashell, I couldn’t agree with you more! However they already took away our pensions, forced 2 pay cuts I’ve been laid off more times in the past 3 years then I can count we were forced to give up 1 weeks worth of vacation thousand of people lost their jobs for good, do to several locations going under and who’s the genius who decided that sponsoring a “pro” Golfer for 6million dollars was a good business move? This is the most ridiculous and enraging situation and we have union members on the board where were you in this executive decision making, apparently asleep at the wheel, you don’t even deserve soup form the Soup kitchen you all should be ashamed of yourselves!

      Sincerely a disgruntled employee

What business does YRCW have with sponsoring a pro golfer each year when they are in debt so bad that they have cut their employees pay! Not once, but twice and are now asking to freeze their pensions for 18 months.

Furyk has no business accepting money from this debt-ridden company knowing they have laid of workers, cut pay, closed facilities, and cutting the pension.

YRCW needs to clean house at the top! Whoever gave the go ahead on this decision should stand in a soup line!!

These numbers are based on the top teir players, you can get some lesser known, straight to the tour guys for $10K for shirts, look at Chez Reavie, his deal was worth 10K, rookie year and he ended up winning the Canadian open with a lesser known golf brand on his back. Good for all parties involved.

Very true…like right now MyGolfSpy could probably pay Daly about $200 to tattoo our logo right under that mini-mullet.

Furyk has even gone with two logo’s on the chest; one over the heart (Exelon) and one on the left side (YRCW). He’s also got one on the right sleeve (Hawke & Co): http://tiny.cc/jocCU
