I think this major is the most important (especially if you are an American) as its our national open. It is physically and mentally challenging. It has history, significant historical repercussions to the game of golf. It requires patience and confidence and demands precision. Unfair at times, maybe… compared to easier venues which challenge one or two aspects of ones game. This tournament, well you better bring your A game if you want to be a United States Open champion.

Also this year’s major is being played at Shinnecock Hills, one of the oldest courses around. It will be a great tournament to watch this year.

Maybe one of those Shinnecock markers in your pocket……… nuff said.

I enjoy watching pros struggle with the tight fairways, long rough, and lightning fast greens. I DON’T enjoy it when the USGA makes the greens like concrete. That actually reduces the skill required and increases luck as a significant factor.

Other than the Masters, this is by far my favorite major. The USGA’s approach to conducting this tournament, not only challenges the golfers shot making skills, but challenges the players mentally before and during the tournament. In my opinion, I believe there have been many players lose the tournament before the start of the tournament due to over analysis.

Why the US Open is special? Because it the the one Major in this country that we can all dream of playing. No sponsors, or prior tour experience, no college pedigree. We can all think that one year, before our bodies give out that we can dedicate our lives to practice, a swing coach and play 3 weeks or perfect qualifying to get in. It is a pipe dream, but it is a dream that every year a couple no name course pros, club champions or next door neighbors get to live. That is why the US Open is awesome.

I love the US Open because it’s the only US major that any great player can walk on and qualify for, no need for sponsors. Plus Shinnecock is an amazing historic course with a challenging ocean breeze, can’t wait to watch.

I will echo what Scott, the first commenter, said – except that the U.S. Open is not a professional golf tournament, strictly speaking. It is open to amateurs, and hundreds of them enter the qualifying tournaments every year, pursuing their dream of playing in the ultimate test of golf.

I love the US open because they play it on some of the best courses in the states. Coming from a Britain it’s nice to watch when compared to our courses.

It’s my favorite major, I would really like to see Phil Mickleson win it this year as it is the one he has not won yet. He needs it for the grand slam.
