(4) TESTERS WANTED: Shot Scope V2 GPS Watch (Includes Performance Tracking)

There are two clear leaders in golf stat tracking technology these days. If you are phone guy, the ARCCOS system is clearly the segment leader. If you’re a watch and automatic shot detection (no-tagging) guy, Shot Scope is the leader.

We’re unabashed Shot Scope fans at MyGolfSpy, and the Shot Scope V2 system, which combines Shot Scope’s patented ClubSense Technology to automatically detect your shots with a detailed smart GPS watch, makes data collection as simple as swinging the club.

And Shot Scope’s NEW! Performance Package allows you to dive deep into your stats and figure out which parts of your game you can brag about, and which parts need a little work.

TESTERS WANTED:

Shot Scope, in our opinion, sets the standard when it comes to making data collection easy – all you have to do is play golf.

Our opinion is our opinion, but what really matters is what you think – and we really want to know what you think!

That’s why we’re looking for (4) avid golfers to test and review (and keep!) the Shot Scope V2 GPS Watch with Automated Performance Tracking, and tell us – as well as the entire MGS Community – if Shot Scope’s performance lives up to its reputation.

*This review opportunity is open to any resident of the planet Earth.

I’ve used Arccos and Game Golf and I’ve returned both after being disappointed with all the “extra” stuff you have to do during and after the round. With Arccos especially, it would fail to register shots maybe once every 2 holes, which totally ruined my confidence in it. It defeats the purpose of auto-shot tracking if after every shot, or every hole, you’re having to check to make sure it got all your shots.

The idea is a great one, and I’m sure someone will figure it out (based on other reviews of Shot Scope V2, I don’t think we’re there yet). It’ll probably be 2-4 more years (2 more generations of updated devices/software) before we get to a point where these are really worth it, IMO.

I have tried TomTom, but what I’ve read about Shot Scope V2 has my interest. The tracking system is the “next” evolution of game measurement and improvement. This will improve my game both before the shot and more importantly, after the shot!
      Thank you in advance…

I have just started shopping for a GPS after many years of guessing distance. This looks just what I need. I would love to give it a go.

it’s fun, but it has it’s limits. I’ve been using one this Spring for about 6 rounds now.
      a) GPS is accurate but not SUPER accurate. it’s less than 50% accurate if you’re on the fringe (“fairway”) or green for putting, which influences putting stats. Ditto with edge of fairway vs rough. To be expected I guess, but know you’ll have to go back and edit each round to ‘move the ball’ accordingly to where you were if you want accurate stats.
      b) for club swings, it’s very good, very accurate. It’s very unusual I have to go back and change or fix a mislabeled hit. Maybe twice in 6 rounds.
      c) the watch is very bulky, if you don’t like things like that near your golf swing, golf glove, you won’t like this. For me it’s not a problem.
      d) this has been the killer so far. the putting.
This is pretty much the case with any club, but especially the putter. I tend to walk around/toward/from greens using my putter like a cane for no reason other than that I just do it. Especially if I’m walking around eyeing up a putt from various angles first. The ShotScope has a very difficult time discerning what is a putting motion vs what is just me walking with the putter when it’s hitting the ground. The obvious solution is carry the putter high/off the ground, do not touch the ground with it until you’re ready to putt. Unfortunately I’m not very good at that and 25+ years of habits are deeply ingrained. So for me, that’s a big problem. Every round I have to edit nearly every green for putts (it thinks I’m 5 putting them all, which lets be honest has happened once or twice, but not 18 times a day, lol).

Basically any contact with the ground with any club will cause the system to register it as a swing. For irons/drivers/etc not so big a deal and it does do an excellent job determining a practice swing vs the real deal. But putting is so sensitive I guess it makes sense it’s harder for it to tell when an actual putt has happened short of being very sensitive to any motion/ground contact.
Also, when you’ve bricked your putt and have 2 inches left, you need to make the motion/contact to putt again or it won’t know you have a 2nd putt and it’ll think you made it. just an FYI.

Overall I still like it a lot so far, but we’ll see how long I can tolerate the required post-round edits for putting. I’m trying to stop my ingrained habits with the putter to see how much that helps, at least for one round just for comparison sake today.

The data it stores is pretty cool to see and learn from though!! And not having to tap the tags, carry around a phone, whatever (all automatic) is a huge huge plus and the only way i’d consider a product like this.

Grade: B or B+ so far

I have one myself and have used it for 5 rounds so far. I agree most of everything The Swami says with a couple of changes/additions.

I don’t find that that GPS misses my location on short chips/putts around the green. That could have to do with the courses I play having better GPS satellite access.

As far as the watch being bulky, it is, but it’s also extremely light and I literally forget I have it on.

I carry my putter so I don’t have the problem with it recording ghost strokes (I call them) but I do forget to register my putts over the hole (trying to get into that habit) which requires that I edit the rounds with hole location on the ones I forget.

I also bought Shot Scope earlier this year. Overall I’m enjoying it, but like you I’ve found the putter data to be disappointing. It always records the correct number of puts because I tell it that when I mark the pin location. I don’t know the actual cause, but at the end of the day it does struggle with identifying where puts were taken from. That’s unfortunate, since putter data is key to progress.

Perhaps as a software change they could allow you to press a button the watch after each put. That’s more pressing buttons, but I bet it would make the data far more accurate.

I like that idea Stephen. At least offered as a manual override to help it by pushing buttons. While I, too, sometimes forget to hit Pin Collection (I’m getting more reliable at it now after 8 rounds), I’d rather save time after the round by pressing a button on the green to help it know when/where I putted from than edit/deal with ghost strokes as well. I forgot, I did have one fairly large item that does bother me. The battery life is terrible. In this day and age on a wearable, they need to do a much better job optimizing it somehow. Playing 36 is out of the question. 18 on a weekend might be pushing it (at least where I live and the 5-6 hour dreaded weekend round isn’t out of the question). It takes forever to charge (no quick charge/etc where you might boost it up say 40% in 30mins to allow it to possibly complete round 2 during the beer break). That would probably be my biggest legit complaint so far, teh battery life needs great improvements, as well as shorter charging time to help that for multi-round days.

I’ve played about 15 rounds with the watch now and it’s a mixed bag. I’ve never had a GPS watch and I REALLY like that. Helps me make better and faster club selection.

The tracking on long shots is very good. After a round I always review my data and it’s usually somewhere between zero and 2 shots that need to be modified. Pretty easy and I don’t mind that. Thinking through my round afterwards is actually a useful exercise.

Putting and chips shots, however, are another story. I’m finding this data to simply be unreliable. The key issue is that despite “marking” where the hole is with the watch it remains inaccurate on at least a third of the holes every round. I don’t mean it’s off by a few feet, I mean it has a hole in the wrong quadrant of the green! That throws off everything else. Approach accuracy, chipping accuracy, putting stats all feed off where the hole is and I’m disappointed in the performance.

I agree on battery life. I play early and fast so it’s not a problem, but if I had a 5 hour round I think the watch would be begging for help.

With regard to the stats, at this time they don’t provide any comparison data so I cannot see where my weaknesses are compared to other golfers of similar or slightly better skill. That’s disappointing.

So overall I think ShotScope v2 is a good product and I’m glad I bought it. That said, there are clear areas for improvement. The single biggest item would be the accuracy of tagging hole locations, which is a bit startling since that’s supposed to be a strength for this product.
