Stracka Line – The Best Putting Training Aid Ever Invented?

Stracka Line – The Best Putting Training Aid Ever Invented?

Every Once In A While There Is a Game Changing Technology

Running a site like MyGolfSpy you get the opportunity to see some pretty amazing pieces of technology and golf gear before it hits the market.  But for every game-changing new product being submitted by either a MGS reader, inventor, or company PR representative there are literally thousands of product launch proposals that stink up the joint (just being completely honest).

But, every once in a while I run across an idea that might just forever change how the game is played.  Today is one of those days.  In the past those ideas were generally based around materials like titanium or graphite for example.  Although, today, the things shaping the future of golf have less to do with clubs and more to do with things like intensely complex computer programs, crazy mathematical algorithms, super in-depth phone applications (apps) and game tracking softwares.

So…what if I told you that there was a new technology that would allow you to NEVER MISREAD ANOTHER PUTT.  Yeah, I said NEVER.  That means no more Camilo Villegas spiderman impersonations, acting like you know how to plum bob to impress your pals, walking around the entire hole 5 times before still missing the putt 10 foot left and 5 feet short and oh yeah no more acting like your taking a practice putt on the green while your partners decide who is up next (and if it goes in its good and if it doesn’t…well it was just to test the speed of the green).  Yeah this technology eliminates all of that.

It’s called Stracka Line™, and I actually wrote about it a couple years ago when they first teamed up with former tour caddie of Arnold Palmer, “Gorjus George” Lucas.  Lucas created those famous “bright orange” hand drawn yardage books you see in so many of the PGA Tour players back pockets.  Well the idea and technology has come a long way since those hand drawn books.

SO WHAT IS “STRACKA LINE” & HOW DOES  WORK?

Have you ever played a video game like Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf?  If you have then you’ve seen pretty much how the Stracka Line™ technology works.  Just like in the game, now on your phone you have a complete topography of the green that tells you not only exactly where every single break is on the green but it actually tells you where to putt (yeah like aim 5 feet left and 2 feet past the hole and it will go in).

Now that 75-foot double breaker has turned in to something much more manageable.  With a couple quick touches to your phone you get the directions on exactly how to make that putt.  This is to putting like point & shoot cameras were to amateur hack photographers when they first hit the scene.  Sound like something out of Popular Science Magazine? Well..it’s not, because just like the futuristic magazines slogan says, “The Future Is Now!”

FROM THE COMPANY: Stracka Line™ is the patented technology for tracking the exact slopes and breaks of a golf courses’s putting green.

Using a top of the line laser from the land surveying industry, this advanced technology scans the surface of the green for millions of data points that are accurate to the millimeter to pick up even the most subtle elevation changes. This takes the plum bobbing and guesswork out of reading your putt and brings your golf game into the 21st century.

Professional golfers, their caddies, amateurs, and even beginners new to the game agree. This new technology is revolutionizing the way to interpret how a ball will break. Never misread another putt with StrackaLine.

Request To Have Your Course Scanned

Stracka Line™ currently has about 150 courses scanned across the US.  Most of which are the courses played by the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour and some other famous tracks have been scanned as well.  But they plan to have between 500-1000 more courses scanned by the end of the year.  And this is just the start.  For a fee of just $495 your home town course can have the Stracka Line™ company come out and do a complete scan.  That means by next week you might be using Stracka Line™ to read putts just like you were in the 2013 EA Sports Tiger Woods game.  Your course hasn’t been  Stracka Lined yet?  Well print this off post it up in the clubhouse or hell just email this article to the ProShop.  It’s that easy.

The Best Putting Aid Ever Invented (No More Guesswork & Human Error)

For those of you wanting to know whether or not this is legal to use in competition.  Basically the answer is you can use it for recreational use and practice purposes, but if your using it for real time updates during competition, it would be illegal.  Anything that updates while you play is actually illegal (even weather forecast phone apps are illegal during competition believe it or not).  In a nutshell the hand drawn books are for the tour players and the app is for consumers looking to learn more about green reading and improving their putting. Using the Stracka Line™, golfers will finally know and better understand which way the putt will break and why.

Yes, there have been tons of green reading devices, putting courses created and training aids built to make you a better putter, but the one fault ALL these aids have is the fact that they all leave room for human error and allow guesswork to come in to play.   Stracka Line™ take the guesswork and human error out of the equation once and for all. Which is the reason and my opinion why this has the chance to be the best putting training aid ever invented.

There are a ton of other features included in the app, although one of the most promising for golfers outside of the green reading feature is the “Fall Line” attribute of the application.  Why is this so cool?  Well it basically tells you exactly where to hit the best approach shot in to the green.  It does this by telling you where the perfect uphill putt or perfect downhill putt is on the putting surface.  So no matter whether you are only using it for recreational purposes and just want to finally know the best place to land your approach shot or you are a competitive player plotting the greens before your round you now have a piece of information that would have previously taken you hours to locate and even then it would have only been a rough guesstimation at best.

To all the comments about AimPoint — the goal of StrackaLine is to simply collect detailed data for each green and present it in an easy to read way via the app. For 5 bucks per course, you’ll be able to see the exact hydrology how water would drain off the green, and the function for calculating an exact putting vector has a slider to adjust for green speed. AimPoint teaches the methodology of using data like ours to putt better. As StrackaLine scans more and more courses to add to our inventory of data available, we hope more and more golfers learn methods like AimPoint’s to have a better understanding of how to best use our data and putt better! StrackaLine = Data Collection, AimPoint = Instruction.

Oh good, another ‘aid’ that the average golfer does not need and will only slow the game down even more. Too many devices that take away the simplicity and fun that can be golf !
Lets get back to proper length putters, all irons having the same degree of loft, balls that don’t go miles and start relying on our own skill, after all this is meant to be more than a ‘good walk spoiled’
Play by feel and learn how your greens roll, it is not hard.
Really not meant to be a rant, just getting fed up with 5 1/2 hour rounds !
Those that buy it, enjoy it though ..

From my personal experience as a division one golfer, strakaline has done nothing but speed up the pace of play. Having the greens mapped out meant people no longer have to look from five angles to get the same amount of information.. Having the greens mapped out still requires tremendous amount of feel since a line is dictated by pace. I would recommend you try it yourself before bashing it because it really does improve your game. There is a reason why tour pros use it.

Will there be a way to download and print the greens from your phone so that data is USGA legal? and pulling out a greens book seems more traditional than bringing out electronic device

Also bare in mind that in Australia even GPS Apps on mobiles are banned by the the PGA of Australia “trying to keep the game as a test of your own skills with little assistance”, so until they lift this stuppid ban I guess we will never be buying it Down Under

I think this is awesome! As soon as they scan courses this mortal plays I will buy it. I believe this is the same as having a GPS system. Is that cheating? And the reality is that on courses I play regularly I no longer need or use my GPS. I feel the same thing would happen with this product. At first I would use it everywhere until I felt I learned the greens, then it would stay in my pocket. But as soon as I try a new course I would pull it back out. I don’t see this being any different then hiring a caddie who knows the greens. But who has the cash for that on a regular basis? Scan those courses I have my Credit Card ready.

Learning to read putts correctly are enhanced by Aimpoint and from the looks of this Stracka Line. Once you finally learn how to read greens correctly, using these aids, you can putt that much better during any competition without them. When you used to think that putt was a 2′ break with good speed, you find out it was actually a 3.5′ break with dead weight. If you miss the dead weight putt you have a short putt for par with the other you have 3-4-5′ knee knockers.

just what the game needs, another thing to slow it down
instead of just looking at your putt, what could go wrong with pulling out your phone, starting the app, placing the hole, placing the ball, interpreting the phone’s data, looking at the actual green to see how the app’s data corresponds to what we really see, updating our facebook status, texting back a friend about the after round dinner plans, wait… I was putting? let’s start this process again and hope to not get distracted this time

Does it give you any information on the speed of the green? Seems like that would be a pretty big factor on how much break to play for a given putt.

There’s a point at which this stuff just gets ridiculous. Golf is a game of skill and reading greens is a skill just like learning to square the club face and compress the ball and spin a wedge. And, no, I’m not technology adverse—I use a titanium driver and a hybrid and a GPS—but, hell, it’s getting to the point where we all might just as well stay home and play video games. What’s next, a laser-guided ball?

This thing is amazing, if it works like they say… however it’s also cheating IMO. Part of the game is learning to read putts. This isn’t akin to a laser, where if you wanted to walk off the yardage (and pro’s caddies do), you could. Reading greens however, is a learned skill. Yes some yardage books at nice courses will include a green view with hole location, slopes & ridges with directional arrows, but that’s not even close to the same… most of the time you can see those anyway and help more on approach shots than on the green putting.

All this being said, I’d prob still use it, haha.

AimPoint does not use Stracka data for TV. And if the ball or pin position is not accurate the read will be wrong.

This looks great – also takes the human element out of aimpoint – i.e. estimating the incline. Are there any plans to bring this to the UK?

It is cool, but like the Aimpoint, I don’t see how it is at all useful.

I mean yes, it is cool to know the break and see the line when watching golf. But that is as a viewer, the players don’t have that info. Yes they have books, but that book is not a live instruction. It is someone’s opinion of what they think the green does in general that doesn’t factor in current conditions, be it wind, rain, green speed, etc.

You can’t even use this thing for a round you’re going to card for your handicap. And you certainly can’t use it if we’re playing for money! It is for practice only. So what does it show you when you’re practicing that tossing a couple balls down and rolling them at the hole won’t tell you? The only thing I can imagine someone maybe using this for would be to create their own book on a course they were going to compete on, it would speed that process up, but again, you can’t use it in competition, and it can’t factor in current condition. . .so. . .what is the POINT?

I don’t think this can even be called a putting trainer. I guess it could in some ways be used to teach people to read greens on their own, or it could make them so reliant that they won’t be able to read them on their own.

AimPoint is getting more and more use on tour. Stacy Lewis uses it, the #1 player last year. And I believe more than 60 tour players use it. In my view it is for real.

      Great article!

So the grand question of them all. Does this speed up the game by cutting out the excessive attempts to read a green like a pro, as you guys pointed out. Or does it bring it to a grinding halt as a user gets out their phone? Then brings up the green checks the line, looks up to verify, looks at phone, looks at line, puts phone away, practice strokes etc etc.

I fear some technology is interfering with pace of play, but this does sound like an amazing advancement.

offcourse not, this would only be good for practice, so a big price to pay for something you should really be doing with your own eye, what is this world comnig to? So many gadgets and everyobne thinks that they will reduce your score! Get out there and start practicing your puts, BTW the aimpoint on TV data is only viewed by those watching TV so what’s the point?

      princeton_tn

Very much like aimpoints app. But aimpoint you take a class and you can take it to any course no scan needed. Aimpoint is the line used by the golf channel and others to read putts at live events on tv.
