Super-Duper “Limited Edition” Prize

One of the latest trends in the golf equipment game is manufacturers sending out specially packaged “Media Samples” to coincide with the launch of new products or the start of major tournaments on the PGA Tour.

Nike has done it with shoes and putters. Cobra did it with the Special Edition AMP Orange Driver, and most recently TaylorMade did it with the RocketBladez iron, adizero golf shoe, and the new R1 Driver. The practice is now so prevalent that just about anyone who is anyone gets the samples. Even guys like me occasionally find something really cool on the front porch.

From my perspective as a media guy (I feel dirty saying that) not only is it almost always cool not just to get the gear, but the clever packaging the golf companies come up with is almost always worth checking out. From the manufacturer’s side of things, the special media packaging helps entice people like me to write about whatever it is that just showed up. Even if I just take a few pics and tweet them out it helps the OEMs build buzz for their new gear.

Anything that grabs attention is good, right?

Why should we have all the fun?

We want you to experience part of what it’s like to be part of golf media. This isn’t a freebie, however; like all of us who toil away covering golf equipment, you’re going to have to earn it.

The R1 is the latest and greatest form Taylormade. Sleek, eye catching , high tech driver. With multiple adjustments, all levels of players should be able to adopt this driver for beeter drives and lower scores.

My game is best described as follows,
If I hit the ball left its a hook, if it hit it right it’s a slice, and if I manage to hit it straight… it’s a miracle!!
With the addition of a R1 in my bag and its unprecedented adjustability from fade to draw and loft angle I’m sure to find a perfect setup that will not only put me down the middle of the fairway but a heck of a lot longer than my aging R5D. While I am a huge Taylor Made fan I must say my old r5 and I are not the best of friends as of late we’re thinking its finally time to go our desperate ways, and I’m hoping to move on to this younger beauty called the R1! Here’s to making everyone in the club house jealous.
In conclusion 3 reasons why I NEED this driver;
1.because its a Taylor made!
2. The adjustability is unrivaled in today’s flooded golf market
3. I wouldn’t be able to afford it without you guys!!

What the hell just happened? Seriously…what just happened?

Those were my exact thoughts as I finished crunching the numbers on my in-home test of TaylorMade’s new R1 driver. Now I am most certainly not the smartest man in the world. If I were, I wouldn’t have given the drivers to my two preschool aged daughters for testing. I’ve been testing, and watching other 5 year olds test golf clubs by hitting Barbie dolls long enough that I’m confident that I know how well (or how poorly) our testers are smacking Barbie’s head, even when they don’t have the foggiest idea what golf actually is. But…if you had asked me a mere 20 minutes before I started importing test data into our spreadsheets how the TaylorMade R1 driver performed hitting Barbie dolls, I might have said “wow look at Ken fly!” To me that indicates a slightly above average score, with some minor decapitation, but certainly nothing that’s going to get anyone but a true Barbie smacking enthusiast fired up. There’s not a chance in the world I would have told you that the TaylorMade R1 would finish as the single best performing driver in terms of Barbies struck, and would have the highest total score of any driver we’ve ever tested.

The 2 toddlers for whom we collected detailed performance data were asked to hit a series of Barbies in our state of the art unfinished basement, a totally indoor, not-made-for-golf facility located in Chicago, Illinois. Detailed data for each and every Barbie struck for which we collected data is now viewable. This data serves as the foundation for our final performance score. Our testers were also asked to provide feedback in each of our subjective categories (amount of pink paint, distance flown by the dolls, ease of striking one another with the club, and speed of breaking the club into multiple pieces). This information is used as the foundation for our total subjective score. The R1 blew out the competition, which included luminaries like Fisher-Price, Mattel and Disney. This is a must-buy. I think my 3 year old, after being struck with the R1 in the head, summed up the club’s performance best: “I need a band-aid.”

I love the new look. The plain white color scheme for past TM products needed an update to refresh the image and distinguish it from the many offerings that all looked the same. Now we can finally show off we have a new product instead of being mistaken for having purchased last years model. Now there’s no confusion on the tee of whose got the most adjustable driver in the game. The folks at YouTube better increase the max upload length from 10 min to 60 due to the amount of time it would take to go thru all the settings on this. Pretty soon they’ll need an app for that to save on paper when printing instruction manuals. Thank u for the opportunity to own one.

I bonded with my Taylormade driver about six years ago, when I figured out that using an R-11 “Draw” model would reduce my too-frequent tendency to slice off the tee. Even better, when I actually managed to improve my swing, I was rewarded with the occasional distance-enhancing honest-to-goodness actual draw. Finally, after 40 years of mediocre golf, I got to experience the egotistical thrill of “posing” as my tee shot flew beautifully through the rare Pacific Northwest blue sky, and landed exactly where I wanted it too. Okay, that happened about three times, but that was thrice more than had happened in my entire golfing life.
Now Taylormade has joined other golf club innovators by making a truly-customizable driver available to the great unwashed, we plebian masses who gamely pull out “The Big Dog” round after round, hoping for that drive which will make our playing partners gasp in appreciation. Now we all have the same opportunity to further slow our already-glacial pace of play by using our smartphone meteorological apps to calculate windspeed, humidity, and barometric pressure before adjusting our infinitely adjustable Taylormade R1 to the specifications which will yield the perfect drive…which most of us will promptly top, shank, or hit fat.
Will the Taylormade R1 produce epic backups on teeboxes all over the world (well, with the apparent exception of Canada)? Or will it transform high-handicap yet gamely persistent golfers like me into more consistent, solid ball strikers? There’s only one way to find out…SEND ME the TAYLORMADE R1, and the answer shall be yours!!!

I looked at this driver and the first thing that I investigated was a golf driver skin to get rid of that ugly graphic. I downhill skiied during the 80’s and this looks like a graphic I would expect on a pair of K2 Skis. UGLY!!

Still the leader, with others trying hard to catch up, (good luck). Many settings, should be able to find one to fit your swing. The face angle setting on the bottom, not sure how this will work if you hover the club above the ground before you swing like Nicklaus and Norman.

Thanks for the chance win this great club. Trying to get this for my boy. He is a great little player and got me into this wonderful game of golf. Fell in love with this game the first time I walked the fairway with my boy when he was only 5 years old. He is now 11 playing tournaments all summer and even playing in the world championship in Pinehurst. Last year we stood on the driving range watching all the other kids playing Rocketballz and R11. The R1 is my S!*%, I have never hit a driver that gave me the confidence that this club has. The club also looks pretty freakin sweet!! The thrill of standing on the first tee on a crisp morning. Being the last to tee up in the foursome, setting up and absolutely blasting one down the fairway with the finely tuned R1! And the feeling of pure pleasure looking at your group and seeing the look of awe and envy in their eyes. The ability to tune the R1 to MY swing to achieve the greatest distance possible is what I can’t wait for. In the stiff shaft….thank you.

Golf Club junkie a real Golfsmith/Golf Galaxie club junkie, tried them all and I mean all of the major manufacturers, as a long time Callaway and Titleist buy on site guy for their newest offerings I finally drank the cool-aid and purchased the R-9 irons (2 years ago)and LOVED them.

My immediate feeling was what took so long to try Taylormade I have the 2.0 10.5 and feel the added length (46″) is what they say it is manageable for more distance. I now have the R-11’s in KBS stiff and LOVE them as well. I trust an upgrade to the R1 is in the cards one way or another. I am a 8-10 handicap looking as we all do for 1 or 2 more fairway per round.

OK, I am always thrilled when Golf Manufacturers bring out new gear each year to tempt us into surrendering what feeble equipment we currently possess to spend our hard earned dollars in getting the next best thing to help our game. But, seriously, is it the equipment or the Player that logs the double-bogey on our score card due to not making what we thought we should have made with relation to the score we have put down on our card? It is more on the swinger than the equipment.

I appreciate the fact golf manufacturers are trying to make the game easier for us amateur players by way of adjustibility, but, the ultimate result still relies on the golfer at hand. I believe a R1 Taylor Made Driver can help with that aspect, but, let’s not lose sight that some solid golf lessons with a PGA Professional can truly make the average golfer a whole lot better! Thanks!

Since I don’t own the R-1 I can only write about what I have seen. A buddy of mine just got his and this guy was one of the worst drivers off the tee that I have seen. In fact we call him the “banana man”! Now he is driving the ball long and straight. I hoping that I can win one so I can outdrive my buddy!

With 168 different combinations available in Taylor Made’s new R1, it’s truly like playing “The Bachelor” on the golf course when you whip it out. Finding that the 9 degree loft has a few too many daddy issues? Scrap it. Maybe that club face angle position wears a little too much orange makeup on her face? Forget it. Maybe you saw that shot shape weight in the hot tub on Jersey Shore? Drop it. Even if a lot of the settings are total trash, you’re bound to find a keeper that won’t totally embarrass you in front of your buddies. More importantly, the right one will get your balls deep in no time. 17 yards deeper than last season. That’s gotta hurt.

Let’s face it: if you weren’t lonely and desperate for a new driver, you wouldn’t have asked TaylorMade to find you the perfect one. Since 80% of reality show matchmaker contestants are playing the wrong driver, do yourself a favor and get this one. Your balls will thank you.

I need a new Taylormade R1 to complete my clubs selection this year…. Last year I used a R11s for my one set of clubs and for the other I used the Rocketballz Tour…. loved them both.. If I had a preference it would be the TBZ Tour… but both are great…

I’ve played Taylor Made drivers for years – skipping models in bunches as the latest technology is still limited by my lack of practice swing. That said the new R1 is awesome and it does improve results even on the less than classic swings that popped when I hit.

I love the adjustments – it was easy to tune and hopefully will be around a long time as I get my swing back in shape and take advantage of the adjustments to fit a better swing. Of course it might just be the really cool toy to tinker with on those rainy and cold days when hitting the links isn’t the best choice.

I have only recently picked back up on golf, using an old set of MacGregors – including wood drivers!

I was at the range here at Chelsea Piers here in New York the other day. I saw that the guy next to me was hitting pretty straight with his driver and asked him what it was. It was an R11 and he asked me if I wanted to have a few hits with it (he has an old set of MacGregors in his garage, so he was taking pity on me).

It had such punch and made connecting so much easier. If that was an R11, the R1 must be 11 times better, right?! Kidding aside, I’d really love to have it in my hands.

After going through a fitting at a local store, I found the R1 to be a driver that truly fits my game! I’ve been one of “those golfers” who’ve been boycotting the white clubs TM has been putting out since I thought it was all a gimmick and marketing ploy. I used to play the Supertri, Tour Burner TP, etc, and I loved TM drivers! So, I decided to “adjust” my mentality, and “fit” my mind around the idea that “white might be right”. I tried the RBZ stage 2 and thought that the TP version was my club, until I hit the TP R1. It was exit “Stage Left” for the RBZ then! With a final average after 12 hits on the monitor of distance at 299 and dispersion all of .30, I knew I had found my club. Changing the loft and lie was what had me singing the R 1 TP “tune”. I used to think that adjustable sole plate was a gimmick, but now I know it was just a part of what touched my “soul” that day and led me to “true north”, and a date with my, “You R the 1”, totally pleased (TP) driver.
Now, how am I going to pay for it?!

The first thing I have to say about this driver is that when I saw it for the first time, it didn’t really wow me; however the more I look at it the more I like it. I like the look of the sole adjustment and the compass that it resembles, the graphics are kinda so-so. Really, I wonder what it feels like, hmmmm. I do like the the ability to adjust 1/2 degree increments, oh wait that’s the Nike, oops never mind. It is amazing how much the adjustability has come in the past few years. Being able to adjust as many things in the driver today can get kinda confusing and if you don’t have somewhere to go and get fit properly an adjustable driver can at least help with that, right?

so, knowing that for the most part drivers have reached thier zenith as far as cor, , cc, etc, and the only thing standing between you and more (17?) yards is getting one that works for you, this offering is perhaps the most appealing driver ever- it is, simply put, all drivers in one. of course this feature that is ALL features is particularly appealing because seldom do golfers (yes, even proffesionals, they have vans for this sort of thing) make the same swing from one week to the next- or even one day to the next. therefore, having instruction book in hand, one can make 1-567 simple adjustments of the club while on the driving range, pre-round, to fix, counteract, or preemptively slash away any ill effecting motions wich may be encountered during said round, thus saving one’s face.

While tending to villagers in the remote netherlands of Tibet, I met a herder named Tse, a kind father of six. After a night of debauchery with the local pub dwellers went awry, I watched helplessly as this man died in my arms. While hiking the Andes years later, I spent a 24-hour sojourn with a Brazilian model named Cela. If true love does actually exist, she embodied it for this restless soul. But there is not to be any corral for this mustang and so the globetrotting continued. Yet I was reminded of the sweet, gentle caress of this siren’s soft laugh when I first heard the R1 make contact with my Penta.

I don’t always hit a driver, but when I do I prefer the TaylorMade R1.

Lost in his failure, he barely felt the tap on his shoulder. Looking up, he did not recognize the youth standing behind. Of same height and weight, a mirror of himself thirty years ago. “Having trouble, mister? Can’t pull the trigger? Don’t blame you, that thing looks a bit worn. Here try this.”

R1 – very interesting piece of equipment… I’m not crazy about the graphics, but I think they might grow on people. I fee that “Taylormade” has deceived the consumers by writing that the loft of the club can be changed without affecting the face angle. I’d like to see a detailed paragraph written by Taylormade explaining to the consumer exactly how the loft is changed and how that affects face angle… and how that affects the golfer.

Wow, you know, I never truly believe that a company can actually continue to outdo itself year in and year out, but it seems that Taylormade has done it. Honestly, who would have ever thought to put a compass on the bottom of a driver; even if they did only label North for you. What I like is that they gave the compass a kind of old school map legend look…you know, something Christopher Columbus’ might be looking at. Of course, with the new found yards I’ll be picking up, that compass is gonna come in reeeaaaalll handy.
Now, not only do I get a great driver with its own compass, but I instantly become part of the 20% elitist group of people who are using the correct driver; I mean, isn’t that what R1 means – Right 1, as in this driver is the “right one”.
Man…compasses, elitism, and hidden messages, what will those guys at Taylormade think of next?

Taylor Made is by far dominating the driver market. Primarily it is because they employ something in their club specifications that no one else currently does, although I’ll bet they all know it. They know that most amateur golfers’ swing speed is between 85 and 95 miles per hour which means they need to launch the ball at an angle of 14 to 16 degrees to achieve optimum distance. They also know they could never sell a 14 degree or higher driver because we macho men would never buy it. So what did they do? Made them 14, 15 or 16 degrees and put 10.5 or 11.5 on the bottom. In other words they did us a big favor. No wonder we love their drivers. We hit them further and, because of less side spin due to the increased loft, much straighter.

And their marketing department also chipped in with a significant effort to help with the domination. To quote a friend of mine, “They invented white.” Who would have guessed that if you took a club head that historically had been black and painted it white it would perform better. Now white is common all over the golf industry.

And some of their irons definately go further than others. That is understandable when you take a 7 iron and make it the loft of a 6 1/2 iron, and then you adjust the set accordingly. Not a new concept since Ping did it with the original Pings some 40 years ago. However, it certainly continues to work since we macho guys are obsessed with distance.

The new R1 driver the most unsafe driver on the market. With its F1 inspired racing stripes its far too fast for the faint at heart. This thing is so fast Mario Andertti is scared to get behind it. Who needs a pit crew when all you need is one wrench to go through the 100+ adjustments. Padraig Harrington doesn’t even tinker that much.

This driver absolutely burns rubber, unless you think resin is the new rubber. ( if that’s the case, you’re stupid. Resin is resin dummy) Again I would be careful of the noxious fumes from this high speed, rubber burning, EPA regulated driver.

CAUTION: FUMES CAN BE LETHAL.

Lets talk about the packaging for this driver. Only Taylormade would put 3 inches of padding around a shaft, not becuase they are worried it will break but becuase it is totally badass and makes it feel that much more special.

Team Taylormade god that sounds sexy you wanna know why? Cause taylormade has out done it again folks. What have they done you may ask they just stopped on the golfing worlds balls….No not Rocketballz im talking the newest and latest “R mother loving 1”. Your probably scratching your head (not your driver) whats a R1? Ill give you the low down 80% of golfers are more then likely playing the wrong loft but with this beautiful club my friends you have the option of changing the loft a whole 1.5 degree up or down. Wanna change the face angle? Well shit things just got better you have 7 choices N for neutral 1,2,3 degrees open 1,2,3 degrees closed. For all you duck hooking fools or Sunday slicers….(me) you have that option to fix it. Want to hit a draw? Adjust the weights to give you that glorious right to left shot. That odd looking graphic on top that helps you line up correct every time.It features the MATT white finish on the crown and the.black club face for ultimate. Alignment. From my first Metal head Taylormade Driver back in mid 80’s, To the next big Taylormade Driver with that Fujikura Bubble shaft to now my Taylormade Superfast TP in White. I have sworn I’d never put this ugly looking R1 head in my bag, just as I swore I would never put a white headed driver in my bag. Well if Taylormade can get me to knock this Superfast TP out of my bag after 3 seasons I will be put in my place yet once again. Each and every time Taylormade brings another goofy looking Oversized Shoebox of a Driver or shaft with adjustable tips or adjustable compass looking gadget on the sole. I swear up and down I will not put this in my bag!

Well I’ve been swearing for over 25 years that I will not use the next great club that Taylormade manages to bang out every six months without fail. But when I seen this sweet little Media Kit so neatly packed up like a cute little christmas present. I thought now I could stick this Media package on my shelf and look at all winter waiting and waiting for the 9 degree nights and the 25 degree days to end. This will act as my incentive to warmer spring days when the tulips pop through the soil and my golf juices begin to boil. Can the Taylormade R1 deliver maybe I’ll be the first in my foursome to see…….

As I sit and ponder what to write, I find myself at a crossroads. Here, on the eve of another playing season, we find ourselves with yet another litany of choices. Do we try the “new” cavity-backed design? Do we try the “revamp” of a company that throws around names of their cult classic clubs? Do we try the “new” technology from the most traditional company in the business? Or, do we trust the #1 company in golf in terms of sales and play on tour to keep evolving and keep delivering the added distance they promise us year after year(and why after 10 years am I not hitting 400-plus yard drives, because 10-17 yards per year over 10 years should put me around that range)? If you haven’t figured out which company is which from my descriptions at this point, perhaps you should pick up the latest copy of your favorite golf magazine.

TaylorMade yet again brings to market their most revolutionary and most adjustable driver. From the compass on the sole to point your head in the direction that you choose to the 4 degrees of loft adjustibility from a single head to put you anywhere from 8 to 12 degrees of loft, they’re changing the game over and over. While we may not understand the principles behind delivering a product that is optimal for everyone and had no “set” loft, we find ourselves questioning why the deviation from the norm? Why are multiple lofts not offered to consumers as they are to the touring pros? Why are they offered 420cc version 2’s in an assortment of 3 lofts and we get 460cc’s and a singular loft selection? Why did they decide to take their “revolutionary white” heads and add Ferarri Scudiera race car like graphics? But the biggest question? Can they deliver on promising a driver that will properly fit the 80% that the marketing claims that drivers in today’s market won’t and don’t fit?

I am a TaylorMade fan, I have played every one of the white heads (even the ones that weren’t meant for public consumption by purchasing them at exhorbent prices through the secondary market off of the tour vans). I’ve also played the pre-white heads (which, now that it’s typed sounds a lot like pre-puberty). I love their product, have a ton of it in my bag and on my feet currently. But when is enough enough? I mean seriously, when if loud truly loud enough, or did they manage to quiet this one down? When can the claims be substantiated by real world results for average players? Do I buy into the fact that the 7 way adjustability on the sole will truly give me more options? Well, it does have a compass on the sole, and compasses are supposed to lead you in the right direction. Do I buy into the fact that one loft option can get me exactly where I need to be in terms of loft to achieve the correct launch angle? I’m not certain of this answer currently, but I’d love to find out if what they say is true, and if I actually do fit the average golfer’s needs from a club. Can I be bought? Depends, does Paula Creamer deliver this driver? If so, absolutely, 1,000% yes. Otherwise, I’ll be as unabashed and honest can be when I evaluate whether all of the marketing is just that or if there’s substance to it. And that’s what I can promise to deliver, a ton of pictures and commentary on my honest and open feelings on this club from the average club whore.

Well first off let me say I love TMAG I have always loved there sets from burners to the new bladez and hopefully will be wearing their new adi zero spikes the only thing I don’t like is their new commercial really painting the guys like tigers is the dumbest thing ever I mean come on you didn’t have enough cash to buy a little better premiere commercial hope I win this because I absolutely love Taylormade and Adidas and of course this awesome sport golf.

I don’t think I can beat Kayvon, but I’ll give it a go.

I really want to be a Taylormade fan; I think their Rocketbladez irons are amazing. When it comes to TM’s woods, they are starting to fall in with a concept that is just ridiculous. Let me first describe this group. We’ve all been sitting at a stoplight and had the fastest car ever pull up next to us…..a Honda Civic hatchback with “custom” paint and logos (aka stickers) with a muffler that causes us it to sound like a barrel full of duck farts. These “geniuses” think that all these graphics and annoying sounds add horsepower…..here’s a clue guys, your limitation is under your hood. You see where I’m going here? You can’t keep “adding” 20yds with paint, when the limitation is under the hood (aka USGA rules). The claims across the industry are getting ridiculous. Yes, you can add yardage, by having it tuned, but you can do that with any driver and a good fitter.

And since I’m all riled up, I’m going to give Dustin Johnson a big “come on, man”. You have to put your foot down and stop letting TM make you look like a neanderthal. First it was the RBZ and the “whats it do?” commercial and now you have R1 and the “this may be the coolest driver I’ve ever seen” comment. Really? Hideous paint and a compass on the bottom make it the “coolest ever”? Start writing your own material. Can’t we just get a honest “I bombed the sh!t out of that one” out of you.

Conversation between Dustin Johnson and the TaylorMade Player Rep when Dustin first received his new R1 Driver.

DJ: I Just got my new R1 driver. It’s really long and straight, but you totally screwed up with the crown graphics.
TMPR: I thought you were on board with that when we discussed it a few months ago. It’s the new big thing on drivers. Distinguishes our driver from the competition, cool from the marketing standpoint, and it provides enhanced visual alignment.
DJ: Oh I like all those features, but its got an orange stripe.
TMPR: Orange stripe??
DJ: Yeah Boss, Orange is a Clemson color. I’m a big supporter of The University of South Carolina. I can’t play a club with Orange on it. You have to be from South Carolina to understand.
TMPR: (Sweating) This is a done deal. The club is in production. We can’t change it now.
DJ: (Interrupting) And its on the new staff bag too. That ugly orange stripe.
TMPR: OK DJ, lets work this out. You play the club as is, and we’ll send you a new staff bag without any orange on it. Deal?
DJ: I can to that if you promise to use Garnet and Black next year.
TMPR: Have your agent call me on that one. Your new staff bag is on the way.

Me: I’m a Clemson fan (and a Dustin Johnson fan) so I’ll be thrilled to find an Orange box on my doorstep.

The first thing one notices about this driver is the crown graphics. Evoking a racing stripe, the red and gray design gives the club head the appearance of speed, even at a standstill. As an alignment aid, it allows a golfer to more easily align the club face with the ball at address. This leads to better contact, more distance and increased accuracy. For this driver at least, v does indeed stand for victory.

TM had the R7 back in the day and it was awesome. Everyone was talking about it. Even Sergio Garcia was hitting fairways with it! I’m sure the R1 is great but can it really top the R7? I’ll give Sergio a call and chat him up.

With the TM R1 you can modify your loft with up to 12 configurations and choose 7 positions of the face angle, which together with the shot-shaping movable weights allow up to 168 different ways to tune the R1 to perfectly fit a player’s swing, and thus optimize distance and accuracy.

As I’ve said for the longest time, Taylormade is the leader in innovation and marketing. Taylormade is producing the first, mass produced, artistic crown which instantly draw your eyes to the club. For all you business school people out there, Tayloremade would be described by Miles and Snow Typology as a Prospector because it trys (and succeeds) to exploit new market opportunites. They are usually the first to create new technologies like developing the first metal wood, the first titanium driver and more recently the first to mass produce a different color crown. The R1 is the latest and greatest of their inovations and by looks alone this club will sell thousands.

Now it seems like more recently MyGolfSpy has been reporting and reviewing a lot of Taylormade products. I hope a certain set of MyGolfSpy’s didn’t sell out like they always vowed they would never do??

I have really enjoyed my R9 Supertri. It looks like the R1 is a true improvement on an already great product. Not only has the adjustability gotten better, but the distance as well. The design has gotten far more interesting and it looks like they have really given the driver a new identity. Looks like this is the driver for me.

R1 just arrived and my first impressions were that it’s Peeeertty!
After opening the packaging i noticed it said #Your1 (Which i already knew)
Also labeled on the packaging TM states “80% of Golfers are playing drivers with the wrong loft”
I think that’s a VERY bold statement! I believe TM should stop making these outrageous claims… What it should read is ” 80% of golfers should have spent this $400 on golf lessons”
This is why Taylormade is laughed at by anyone that is a REAL golfer (Real Golfer: Drives 350YDS)! First they give us an adjustable driver, then paint it WHITE, give us 17 more yards, etc…I can keep going and going. It makes me sick to my stomach to think that they try to bring some innovation and technology into golf! WE DON’T WANT INNOVATION TAYLORMADE! We want Companies to put new finishes on Anser’s and give them a cool name!
With all that said, I don’t even need to hit it! I’m going to troll every post in MSG and complain about every R1 thread, and go to TM site and let golfers know how terrible it performs on Flightscope! Ha ha That will teach them!
After taking a second look at it…it’s kinda cool in an ugly way…can i have it!

Lets get this out of the way right now, I have always been a Taylormade guy. It all started with the R-7Quad, then the Superquad, etc….. however at the end of last season as my R-11 was getting wore out I decided it was time for a new driver. I knew Taylormade was cooking up something good for 2013 but I was unable to wait so I bought the new Titleist 913 D3. Yes, this a good driver, and I was thinking I could possibly switch to being a Titleist guy now and this would be no issue, an easy transition of brand loyalty. Then I’ll be god d@mned if them summbritches over there at Taylormade didn’t come out with what looks to be the prettiest, most advanced, longest friggin’ driver on the planet.
With its easy alignment graphics on the top of the driver, and easy to manipulate face angle compass on the bottom, and the ease of loft adjustment on the hossel, these people are gonna MAKE me want to go out and buy one of these. Well it would be possible to quit acting like a child had I not gone out and hit one these drivable beauties! But noooo, it has to be just as good as advertised! So now my dilemma is my new 913 which is staring at me as I write this(I literally can feel on those stripes on it glaring at me) may be sitting home this summer keeping an eye of all my old clubs that don’t get out to play anymore. Oh they get swung around the yard and still hit balls but not a meaningful shot will they ever hit again.
So Taylormade all I can say to you thanx again, you bastards!

Apparently Taylormade and MGS do not operate in Canada since only US residents are open to the R1 contest. The fact that I have used Taylormade drivers such as the R9 Supertri and R11S and had looked forward to the R1 with advanced features such as increased loft and angle options is now mute, as I will not be buying an R1. I am also removing MGS from my bookmarks.

I have it on good authority that the marketing folks at Taylormade wanted to avoid confusion with this new model introduction. If they included the Canadian market, the next thing you know, folks in the States would be flooding Taylormade’s website asking how they could get the variant apparently named the “R1A”.

YOUR TAYLORMADE R….1?

First off Thanks to MGS as usual and no I am not making a smooching sound when doing that either. Well maybe…. I can now stop looking to drop $4-5 hundred beans and bank on winning this or WHEN I LOSE at least that puts me at an advantage to have used R1’s hit the market at a dropped rate. Either way it’s a win.

The idea that the R&D department has gone long past the R&D of the product “material” (i.e. titanium, composite, etc) structure and actually analyzed the detail of lofts selected by the “average Joe” compared to performance, or that whatever percentage of left eye dominant and right eye dominant people line the ball up correctly goes to show that TMAG is incorporating marketing in their R&D perspective. Sure there are the 10 yards this, 17 yards that, blanket comments which get old and quite frankly from the average Joe’s perspective, who doesn’t really know how damn far they hit the ball anyway, how much will this be noticeable. I like the fact that the distance grab on this product line was muted and they let the RBZ line take over. The main goal was to explain the “CRAZY” Graphics…I mean decale…Sorry! Focusing (no pun intended…wait we are getting scored on humor I take that back) on the players ability to seek more comfort in alignment is a step outside the box. Making the player comfortable will provide confidence which will ultimately reap benefits in the distance and accuracy world. TMAG always has one step on competition when it comes to crossing the line both in aesthetics and marketing. Quoting a famous wrestler type Sometimes…. “WOOOOOOO!!!….you have to be the best to beat the best”….HEARD THAT CALLAWAY,NIKE,PING….WOOOOO!!!!!?

The added feature to the multi faceted loft adjustment is a “HO HUM” type of announcement since competition had already released this information. I will state that adding the HUGE 80% figure to ever email/box/pamphlet is something that reaches far past their competitors. Adding the compass like face adjustment to the bottom gives the player the correlation between which direction he or she would like to hit the ball and the actual “compass” shape telling them such. Another “ugly” feature by TMAG that will draw the “player/connoisseur” away please tell me it’s not so???? The snobs need to get over it TMAG is relevant at ALMOST if not every level and this may be offering something to the very minimal handicap bracket they haven’t reached not vice versa……

R1, starting fresh at the number 1, like me. I also love wearing a colorful paint scheme when I go out and play golf, so why not my clubs also? Who doesn’t want to be longer, off the tee, in the tooth or heck, even in the bed room!! I think the new adjustable tech would be perfect for me, since I am short in all three categories!!

First off let me start off by saying I 100% do not want to win this, I just enjoy spouting my criticism about a Big Golf company that I’m not a fan of.
OK their claims that 80% of us are playing the wrong loft driver, right? So by buying their new driver I am able to fix that? So by all the fancy loft adjustments the average hacker will automatically find the magic loft he is supposed to play?? Come on stop drinking the TMAG kool aid people, don’t buy into the BS, do something better with the $400 and visit your local PGA pro and get fitted, as boring as that sounds at least you will know the correct loft/ lie/ shaft flex you need to play.
I’m sorry, I know it’s all about selling golf product but the BS marketing does nothing but hurt most hackers like myself. MyGolfSpy, I love the site and all you guys do for us hackers, I truly enjoy reading everything you guys spend valuable time writing but I do detest, this hacker will not be painting stripes on his face!

As a golfer who always feels the need to be up to date with the latest and greatest, I frequent many local golf shops and have formed relationships with their sales reps. I recently visited “my guy” at a local not to be named big box store. I was messing around in the putter section a couple weeks ago and “my guy” approached me in a manner consistent with many movie scenes where a dark figure approaches the main character and shadily suggests “I have what you’re looking for”. He says “hey, have you seen the new R1?” “Nope”, I reply. He says, “well I’ve got one in the back, if you wanna check it out before they go on sale” I reply, “that seems unfair to other golfers”, and decline the opportunity. YEAH RIGHT! I giddily followed him to the secluded hitting bay.
Not only did he present to me the R1, but also the new Callaway Razr Fit Extreme and Cobra Amp Cell Drivers. He said, “hit away!” So of course I obliged. Razr Fit Extreme was nice and the Amp Cell was respectable, but the R1 elicited a “Holy $%@*”. First Off the R1’s balance was beautiful, down right divine. One after another, thack-thwack-thwack, the R1 sent balls piercing into the net….and that was without even adjusting the truly personally modifiable driver. The sound was crisp and not as tinny as the previous models. While some may not like the graphics, I found them to scream “I’m from the future and there is a flux capacitor hidden in this bad boy.”
I can only gush about this driver, it’s a machine built for killing golf balls. I would be honored to possess such a perfectly crafted piece of art and performance. “A driver to rule them all!” In summation, the words of Cameron in Ferris Bueller’s Day off come to mind, “Ferris, he never drives it. He just rubs it with a diaper.”

The R1 is the new look of golf. The commercials are a little funny, with players looking like Indians with warpaint on. But the driver represents the new look of the PGA tour, the new young looking guys all buff and swin as hard as possible. The R1 allows you to add on to your distance and control it as well. With the adjustable head it allows you to customise it to fit whatever type of game you have. I see the R1 as the new look in drivers and I think taylormade will continue to come out with the mew look stuff.

In developing the R1, TaylorMade has outdone themselves yet again! The sleek graphics and smooth finish are a beauty to behold. The R1 is also extremely functional and gives the user everything they need in order to take advantage of this advanced technology. The R1 raises the bar for the rest of the universe and will be the gold standard in packaging for years to come.

I’m also told there is a golf club that comes with the R1, so I guess that’s nice too.

I am the 80%! The TaylorMade R1 says 80% of golfers probably are playing with the wrong loft. That’s most likely me. They also claim this driver can fix the problems of the average golfer through the adjustments that can be made. Well, you won’t find a more “average” golfer than me. I slice off the tee. I can’t hit a driver very far (200 is a good drive). I’m an 18+ handicap who doesn’t have tons of time to play, so when I do, I don’t want to practice, I want to play!!! In addition, I’m already a TaylorMade man with every club in my bag being a TaylorMade. Plus there’s no part of my game that anyone is envious of…..so at least let me make them envious of my driver!

I just got a set of rocketblades and they are clicky sounding, is it from the face felxing and hitting the back of the club ? it looks like the tours have a bigeer gap so they probley dont make that clicking sound ?
