TaylorMade’s M Family Is Complete

TaylorMade’s M Family Is Complete

Last night, early this morning…why split hairs? Let’s just say that very recently TaylorMade posted a video teasing a new driver (presumably the M2).

And while my eyes weren’t exactly drawn to it, there’s a new iron coming as well.

According to the video, on 2.19.16, the M Family is Complete. Well thank god for that. We can all sleep easy tonight.

Expect actual product details to emerge well ahead of 2/19.

Watch it for Yourself

Apparently TM Engineers do their work inside a windowless vault. The airflow must be terrible, but, as per usual, I digress.

The key line in the promo is:

“…we were in this room, creating more M technology, for more golfers, for the entire bag.”

What We’ve Heard, What We Know

Almost since the M1 was released we’ve been hearing rumors of an alternative offering to compliment the M1 and M1 430. Keep in mind that for TaylorMade, Callaway, and to a lesser extent Cobra, alternative often speaks to price as much as it does technology.

These guys still rely on volume, and that means you need to make some noise around $350. That’s the reality of the business.

A casual aside…the mainstream $300 driver is dead. I had previously informed you thusly. I’d like to be properly credited.

m-big

All signs (including the above enhanced crop from the video), point to a multi-material, fixed weight, rear CG club, with a Speed Pocket. The hosel is adjustable, but there are no sliding weights.

Un-Metal and mostly un-adjustable. Oh the horror…

Removing weights saves money, not to mention actual weight, which is imperative when the goal is to push the CG back. The rear placement suggests TaylorMade may finally be getting serious about reintroducing the word forgiving into its vernacular.

It’s about damn time.

And About That Iron…

The iron could either replace the RSi 1, Aeroburner, or potentially both. The photo suggests an iron with generous offset, wide sole, it could have Speed Slots…it clearly has a Speed Pocket, and yeah…something is definitely going on with that hosel.

I can’t wait to hear that story.

Settle Down

Before you get all irate about TaylorMade flooding the market, let’s assume that the M2 is the direct replacement for AeroBurner. With M1 and M1 460, that would leave TaylorMade with 3 current models. The nerve of these guys, right?

By my count, Callaway has at least 5 (it’s hard to keep up), Cobra has 5, PING and Nike have 3, while Titleist has 2 (plus whatever you can order through the truly custom MOTO program).

My point is there’s nothing reckless or egregious about this release, neither in volume nor timing…ESPECIALLY if it proves to be what all signs indicate it will be; a lower priced alternative to the M1 that offers a completely different performance specification.

This M2…M whatever, is very clearly not intended for guys who just bought the M1.

While I’m not convinced TaylorMade will challenge the MOI number for number, conceptually TaylorMade, as Callaway has done with XR16, is trying to create something that can run with PING’s G series. That’s just good business.

It’s no easy task, but one PING’s success proves is worth pursuing.

Stay tuned for more, but while you wait, let us know what you think.

I actually got to Demo the new M2 Driver and Fairway wood, and I was impressed. Now let’s get one thing straight, I’m no TaylorMade fan after they took down Adams and pretty much are waiting to sell the name off to the highest bidder, but I’m not going to let a personal grudge taint my views on actual performance either. I currently play one of those evil SLDR Drivers as well as the Fairway Metals, and Hybrids, and they are the first Taylormade Clubs to make it in my bag (besides the occasional putter) since the days of the R7XD Titanium faced irons. I’ve often had a love hate relationship with TaylorMAde equipment…that being said–The M2 was made for guys like me who need a little more club head speed and a little more forgiveness. It delivers both of those in spades—enough to help me average 10 more yards. That is ten yards based not only on raw distance, but fairways found…AKA …Distance Towards The Actual Target.
I found the dispersion to be scary good. The balls not only hit the fairway every flippin’ time, but they were middle, middle slightly right, and middle slightly left shots. The fairway wood—not so much. I have an average 93.5 MPH Swing Speed, and used the 10.5 Model with Kurokage 60 Gram Shaft. I might actually go and get fitted when all 30 shafts are readily available.
The fairway wood was good, and performed slightly better than my SLDR HL, but not enough to make me want to contemplate buying one just yet.

What’s with the “Screw TM. I’m never buying a TM driver. I’m sticking with my ______ from 2008” comments? You don’t like TM and their product release cycle. We get it. Go stroke your SuperCell somewhere else.

Waiting for the “Well, my 913 D3 with {enter some funky shaft} is better than any new TM driver!” responses in 3….2….1…..

Club manufacturers are limited to what they can do to keep clubs legal. The reason for the continuous releases is to subsidise the massive sponsorship fees they pay pros and the time and money they invest in r and d. The big companies can afford to have golf as a sideline. Acuschnet turn a profit just in balls and shoes so have no need to build new clubs every 3 months.

That’s right a Callaway GBB with S2H2 hosel from the 90’s. I shopped for weeks to find the right driver I really wanted it to be a titleist bc that’s what my dad plays but I hit every driver in sight stumbled upon a TM SLDR and never looked back for those who say they are unforgivable clearly you aint good enough go take a lesson. This was before the M1 came out and I’ve hit those and they are far better than the SLDR I have but I didn’t go out and buy one yet key word is yet once the price point drops I will no doubt. Just have to say thank you to TM for putting in the research and willingness to take a loss for all of our gain no matter how many haters are out there.

The SLDR was the last TM driver I ever bought. I even had myself fitted by a professional, to ensure that I was playing with the right shaft, and all my launch and spin rates where optimised.

The SLDR is now out of the bag – honeymoon over, replaced with a rather old Cobra driver (Bio Cell), fitted with the cheapest shaft I could buy. The Cobra driver stays in the bag simply because it is much more forgiving, has a more boring trajectory and longer.

Doubt I will change this driver anytime soon.

TM’s secret is in building 46-inch length drivers that not even the pros attempt to hit. By the time the poor consumer figures out he can’t hit it, the ‘must have’ new technology from TM comes to the re$cue. The TM tech shop must resemble the ‘Shades of Gray’ pleasure room with the Marketing boys having their way with the tech submissives. Stimulating!

You know they’re more game-improvement irons, right? Most beginners slice the ball, which is helped out by offset.

If you’re a player (which by your smart comments you must be) these irons aren’t designed and marketed for you. But then again, you must know that already, you’re just choosing to make snide comments about it.

I don’t understand why someone like you who obviously doesn’t like TaylorMade would go out of his way to read an article about the new launch, watch the video and then take the time to post non-productive comments about it. Makes no sense to me. Same with the ” Another driver” and “M3 by June” comments, they’re getting really old.

All of the things written are probably true, the driver doesn’t replace the M1 and the driver does give TMag a product to compete against Ping’s G30. But the choice of name, M2, plus Taylor Made’s history says something completely different.

Assuming this is supposed to be a GI driver at a competitive price point my gripe is with the name choice. Couldn’t they have come up with something better or different enough to not cause confusion?

Let’s see, either the design engineers are spinning in their chairs coming up with actual new designs or they have a design library filled with tweaks to the paint, the cutouts to the soleplate, moving some weight around, or material improvement that allows TM to introduce a new driver every couple of months. Whatever they do to bring a new driver to the market is okay with me but as some folks have already mentioned, the retailers get stuck with the old models that sit around in inventory that have a negative impact on their bottom line. I suspect most people don’t care as long as the new driver will add about 2 feet to the length of their drives but it has gotten to be ridiculous.

This isn’t even a tired of debate… It’s an ancient covered in dust unnecessary line of argument that’s lead by imbeciles.
Tm makes lots of product. Check. It’s actually good stuff. Check. It’s so similar & often only incremental changes. Check. And you don’t need to buy it & for those of us that love buying quality gear a few mths down the road at reduced prices it’s a great business model for us. Check.

I don’t think the comments apply to this release, but they are typically very appropriate regarding TM’s business practices.

M1 wasn’t the best driver in the world.. it was PING who won that title in 2015.

Seabass, I think Ping won that title when they introduced the G20.

Considering its a replacement for the aeroburner that came out all most 2 years ago. Keep in mind taylormade is on the 1 1/3 cycle like ping and Titleist unlike Callaway who has had 4 drivers since November

Aero burner came out Last Year at the PGA show. Only 1 year old. R-15 came out January 9th Last Year. Aero burner followed . Needed a lower price club, than$429.00

This is not even funny anymore. Wonder how many retailers still have stock for RBZ that they can’t move..
