TaylorMade/Tiger Woods: Big Move or Big Mistake?

TaylorMade/Tiger Woods: Big Move or Big Mistake?

Ask anybody on the planet to name a golfer, and among those who can come up with even a single name, the probability is that name will be Tiger Woods.

For many, Tiger Woods remains the only golfer that matters.

Despite what feels like a long-term absence from the actually competitive part of the game, the Big Cat’s draw is still unparalleled. He is the central discussion point of any tournament in which he participates and is barely off-center in those in which he doesn’t.

Several years removed from what was inarguably his prime, the evidence still suggests Tiger is the most marketable force in golf.

Not Rickie, not JDay, neither Spieth nor Fowler; no one attracts the circus like Tiger Woods. Golfers still pay attention to what’s in his bag.

That’s a fact to keep that in the back of your head as we continue.

If you’re TaylorMade or any other golf company on the planet, you want Tiger on your team. The thing is, Tiger doesn’t come free, or even cheap. So within that reality, it’s reasonable to ask if Tiger is still worth the cost.

The Unpleasant Reality of Tiger Woods

My how time flies. We’re coming up on 4 years since Tiger last won a PGA tournament. We’re approaching 9 years since he last won a Major. It’s only delusion that would prevent us from acknowledging that the trends clearly suggest missed cuts and withdrawals are now more probable for Tiger than TV time on the weekend. With every purportedly minor setback, the voices of those wondering if Tiger is still capable of putting in the reps grow louder. The process may very well require more competitive time than Tiger has left.

It’s a shitty thought for those of us who love watching Tiger play, but that’s the thing about reality; sometimes it’s shitty.

When you consider the cost versus the benefit, it’s fair, yet somehow admittedly odd, to wonder if TaylorMade inking Tiger to a long-term deal will prove to be a mistake.

tiger2

The Upside to Tiger

On the positive side, news of the Tiger signing stole the spotlight during an otherwise lackluster PGA Show. Many, myself included, would like to believe that Tiger still has the potential to help reinvigorate a brand facing its biggest challenges in recent memory. It remains for sale, and its largest competitor, Callaway, believes it will overtake TaylorMade in the metalwoods category (retail sales, not tour use) sometime this season. That’s a bigtime threat to the TaylorMade identity, and no doubt, some believe Tiger helps bolster the defense.

It’s also every bit as true that TaylorMade’s R&D team is genuinely excited to work with Tiger Woods. The energy and enthusiasm coming from team TaylorMade are real. They’re excited and focused, and that’s where good businesses want their employees. That part of the story is inarguably good for the TaylorMade.

Now imagine a healthy Tiger Woods winning again (and again), and doing it with 13 TaylorMade clubs in the bag. Recent history suggests that’s a pipedream, but TaylorMade was clearly willing to roll the dice on the possibility, however remote, that it could happen.

With Tiger Woods comes upside potential, and If we’ve learned anything from Roger Federer recently, it’s that even Father Time loses the occasional battle.

Nearly all of us want to believe that Tiger can win one too.

The Downside to Tiger

That’s all well and good, but we also shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that TaylorMade had to spend big to ink Tiger.

The story coming out of the TaylorMade booth at the show was that once Tiger hit M, he knew he had no other option. It’s an uplifting yarn, but you can never really trust anything you hear in a PGA Show booth.

The real story is that once Team Tiger had laid out its list demands (the baggage as I’ve heard it described), and threw out a number, TaylorMade was likely the only option.

A source familiar with early negotiations suggested that Tiger’s want list was long, and would have proven disruptive to implement. His asking price was high, and his health was a massive question mark from the start. Short story, the numbers didn’t make sense.

In a time where the pyramid of influence has shifted, and tour players have less influence than they’ve had in the past, Mizuno, Wilson, Cobra, and Srixon no longer spend big on tour, and when they do, it’s on younger players with actual upsides.

Callaway and PING choose their spots and are careful not to overspend, and while it’s true that PXG’s Bob Parsons has shown a willingness to throw money at the tour, he also said that he probably wouldn’t be interested in signing Woods.

Scratch all those names off the list and what you’re left with are TaylorMade and Titleist, and with Tiger already under contract to play a Bridgestone ball, realistically, Titleist wasn’t ever at the table.

So now TaylorMade has Tiger and his personal iron guy (part of the baggage). It has to put time and resources into developing irons that won’t sell in any meaningful numbers at retail (if they’re even brought to retail), and it has to pay Tiger Woods big money. And of course, it has to hope he stays healthy.

In fairness, it’s still very early, but we’re not off to the best start on that last one.

On the one hand, it’s an odd play for a company that already has a well-established tour identity and a stable of top players (Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, and a rapidly emerging John Rahm) on staff. If you still believe the tour moves the needle at retail, you could argue that nobody needs Tiger less than TaylorMade.

On the other, there are golfers out there who will tell you that Tiger Woods still influences what they play. They bought Nike because of Tiger, and at a minimum TaylorMade climbs their list because of him too.

Whether or not that’s enough to shift the percentages remains to be seen, but it seems unlikely that Tiger, on the downside of his career, will have a more significant impact on TaylorMade’s identity and its retail sales than he did for Nike when he was in his prime.

Time, as it always does, will tell.

Tiger’s game may be an empty shell of what it once was but TaylorMade knows he is still #1 in name recognition in the game of golf and will be for at least a couple more years. Until the M line, I found TaylorMade far less inspired quality wise than in the past. So the Tiger signing may work for a couple years despite his body failing. I agree with an earlier opinion that for Tiger to compete for four days in a row again, he needs a low stress swing of the Don Trahan variety. The fluidity of Tigers swing is long gone. He’s twitching like a senior on his down swing at this point. That’s not a criticism, its a just a fact. As an older guy who can rarely play two days in a row effectively because of back issues, it’s just the way it is. Tigers golf body is in it’s 60’s.

Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicolas, and Tiger Woods did so much to keep the game of golf alive and interesting. TaylorMade’s signing of Woods seems not to be an investment in the future but the here and now. As the article started off, no goffer alive draws more attention to the game of golf as it wanes because of equipment cost and over building of courses. This is reality. We need Tiger Woods.

I believe Tiger Woods was the greatest golfer of any generation given the depth of the fields that he played within. That said I also believe that Tiger had the elitist attitude of life that comes to many with fame & fortune. He cheated on his wife & family…..many times over…..and that has brought bad karma to his life, golf, family, health, etc. He will never be the same golfer that he was.

Yes age has something to do with it, but at 40…..come on……many great players competed well into their late 40’s & 50’s. Tiger has always got the next excuse in his quiver of BS today. His short game has gone due to his introspection of his failures as a man, a husband & a role model.
That will not change with time…..he is who he became & it’s not a pretty picture of a personality. Any redemption would be his phenomenal play of yesteryear……and that was almost 10yrs ago……lets all move on.

If your older, as I am, you know what age, injuries, surgeries, etc. does to your game. We all have to live & lower our expectations. Tiger is no different……after all, he is just a man……he puts his pants on just like the rest of us, I would assume, one leg at a time.

Taylormade has ruined the golf industry for the green grass professionals. They have continually brought out so many models within the same year & sold through so many channels of distribution that they should do some introspection of their corporate ethics to the game……to the green grass professionals of this world. It is my hope that Taylormade gets absorbed by Callaway ( another giant ) and the equipment end of the game will start to pair down.

My Golf Spy has the correct direction & management balls to look at exactly what are you getting every 4 months with another new product introduction. I applaud them, their stance, their direction & read their website weekly for more controversy……they make the world revolve !

      Respectfully,

Tiger’s tales of treachery aside, for him to be of value to TM and return to the tour, he needs to take the stress off of his low back and change his swing drastically. Don Trahan’s PPG method, which is designed for seniors, might be a good alternative, since his short game seems to be more than adequate and could keep him competitive for the long haul to retirement.

Tiger is past his sell by date ! … TM have thrown good money away they should rather be chasing Rory Mc as a signed player whom has plenty to give still than Tiger !!! …. Just think of the top ten golfers they would have had. Jason D , Dustin J , Sergio G , Rory M – as it would stand 4 that I know of in the top 10 already now that is making a statement ! On the subject of personal fitter , how is he going to improve Tigers game? Nothing if you ask me.! … he is so far off in terms off his game which has supposedly been just round the corner of winning that its become JOKE. No interview is left with out the Great TM commenting on that he can feel his game is just about to click.
Great golfer at the time and one the turned the game on its head for all to enjoy – But its time to say thank you and good bye , trust me he will not be missed either !
He is not in the same league as the great Roger Fed of tennis that can still compete with the best in the game.

I have read a lot of comments and what just about everyone seems to miss is Tiger only has 2 Taylormade clubs in his bag right now! The driver and 3 wood! He is still playing the 2008 Nike irons! And if I’m not mistaken, you have to be pretty good with your irons to compete on the PGA tour. Let’s wait until he gets the bag full of Taylormade along with wedges and then we can analyze whether this was a smart move.

I’m glad he signeed with Taylor as it will help keep the price of clubs down with other manufacturers. They won have his blotted contract dragging their company down. Also if TW sold clubs then Nike would not have gone out of business!!. I have always found TM clubs to be cheaply made compared with the other major brands. I do like their golf balls though, oops

You have to think from the Taylor Made side it’s a big win even if he just hangs around the middle.of the pack for a few tournaments BUT if they paid him a truckload of cash without the stipulations of health or minimum cuts made or tournaments played in the contract they made a huge mistake. Now any perspective buyer will need to be aware of what his contract cost them and what impact it will have over time. He could become a great player again IF HE LET’S HIMSELF GET HEALTHY. In his absence the rest of the field figured out what he was doing from a practice and fitness standpoint as well as ensuring they each have a good support system in place. They evened the playing field. Would be great to see him out there on a Sunday I the mix with Spieth, Fowler, Thomas, Day and DJ.

Remember when Tiger was with Titleist. Then the BIG bucks showed up at Nike and away goes Tiger to Nike. Tiger was by far the best of the very best when he went with Nike. The sad part Is Nike did so well with Tiger they decided to close their club making division. Nike also during Tiger’s run NEVER even garnered a 10% share of the golf club business.

I am sorry to say this is the worst move TaylorMade could have made. Why in the world would you sign the former #1 player in the world to a club contract when he now ranks in the 500’s and his last club sponsor had to shut down?

In short Tigers choice of club brand does not translate into sales. Just ask Nike.

If Tiger wins, after changing from his Nike irons to new TaylorMade irons…
      …every pain will be forgotten.

Taylormade is somehow searching for a new identity…
      …and Tiger maybe also.

If the TaylorMade staff feels comfortable with Tiger and vice versa…
…it will become a great team – even without Tiger hitting balls.

Maybe both are in a transition and the best fit for eachother (at least feel wise) in this moment in time…

…I´m curious how long it will take for the golf community, not to cry after each tournament Tiger plays…

      …my credo is:

“The worse the player, the better the equipment has to be (to win a tournament)…”

…however, a genious player can also use the best equipment (to win a tournament).

In both cases, Tiger and TM are in a win / win situation…
      …even without winning a tournament!
The point is to believe that it is the best equipment…
…that you can focus on the game.

I can understand TM wanting to sign Tiger to use their clubs. He is THE BIG NAME in golf. But the question is,…at what price? How many clubs will TM have to sell to justify purchasing his name & services on their clubs? They already have a large stable, and adding Tiger is pricey. The name of the game is, bottom line, making a good profit from manufacturing golf clubs and other equipment. If his price is high, then TM cannot, in all probability, make enough equipment to offset the price they pay for Tiger’s name. So, why risk taking a loss on a big name whose career is possibly teetering near the end?

Hitting it straight is what we golfers aspire to achieve so it is sad that Tiger is unable to hit the ball straight for Taylor Made. I bought the Taylor Made 14 degree mini-driver when it came out. This steroidal 3-wood makes me feel like Henrik Stenson off the tee, straight, and in most cases, within 10-20 yards of my buddies with big drivers. And I am usually in the fairway, so thank you Taylor Made for your disruptive innovation with the “mini-driver.”

I don’t know how much TM paid and what their prospectus was on a ROI. My question is whether they actually need Tiger playing to actually benefit from him? It may be that the answer is no.

For thinking on why, look no further than the Jordan brand for Nike. It’s been a decade since Jordan has made a bucket in competitive play, but that Jumpman is still Nike’s most recognizable and marketable thing in basketball.

Maybe TM is thinking the same thing? If so, maybe this all makes sense, and maybe they’ve effectively locked TW up “forever.” Nicklaus can still shill some gear but that audience is starting to age out (and sadly die). Maybe TM thinks that Woods can be the Nicklaus for the 30-50 year old crowd as they age?

Sometimes bad publicity is just as good as good publicity. Yes there are a lot of rooter for Tigers success and as many for his dismise. His popularity is still strong as shown by the many comments here. ….good or bad. Not sure how much the Tiger contract was worth, but maybe a performance contract that pays more for goals may be the best strategy.

I think the two major companies that have signed on with Tiger have made a terrible mistake. They seem to think there is only one guy who can save there business and forget he’s in his 40’s, technically hurt and they must understand he will never be the player he was when young. I understand that all golfers love to watch him but they must remember he is a shadow of what use to be. I can not see him winning anymore Majors or even possibly a tournament.

This is America – if you can package BS up nicely enough, and cover the stench – you can sell it. Taylor Made is just looking to make money off what remains of the Tiger Mystique, and Tiger is looking to continue cashing in on whatever cache of same he has left before it’s totally exhausted. I’m hoping that he can, at the very least, get to Freddie Couples/post-back surgery level of play – Freddie has struggled, but still played well enough at times to win and make watching him play a joy (Skins Game anyone??). Boom Boom is one of my two all-time favorites – the other being Lee Trevino – and I still believe to this day that had he not injured his back, he would have been the only guy who would have consistently challenged Tiger during the early years of his playing career. Being myself the survivor of a golf-related back injury (1/2 year incapable of playing + 1/2 year of rehab) at age 45 y.o., I think that’s about all we can look forward to for Tiger, at best.

Because golf clubs have a long shelf life. Most people aren’t going to shell out $2K+ every year for the latest and greatest. Fact is PINGS from the 80’s more than hold their own against anything coming out today. I’m still kicking myself for selling the Lynx tour ni cr’s. Now there’s certainly been improvement in shaft technology. 20+ year old graphite is down right nasty compared to today’s offerings. For that matter steel is night and day.

Balls? There’s your big game changer.

All that said carding better scores is still about keeping the ball in play and making putts. That’s practice. Which most will continue to try to buy in a sleek new package with promises of extra yards.

I have a bit of a different take- Tiger is like a Wayne Gretzky or a Gordie Howe minus the personality; however- he was SO good in his prime that there are enough people who can forgive the past ten or so years. Many golf fans I speak to will reminisce about how great Tiger was, and even forget his off of the course troubles, as well. Whilst not having the longevity of Palmer or Nicklaus, he certainly has had permanent impact. Will this be a good investment for Taylormade? Time will tell. But Tiger, despite having some awful, awful times, still has drawing power.

Even during horrible rounds, Tiger is still getting a significant amount of airtime… when Day, Johnson or others are at the bottom of the field, they aren’t getting covered. Tiger is still getting talked about after missing a cut… good for advertising when you get as much TV time as he does.

I really don’t understand why any of the companies would pay major money for him. Especially if he is going to require all of those things. If Taylormade had not agreed to those ridiculous demands, who would have? It seems to show a little bit of delusion on his part that he thinks he should be able to get all of that still. Granted, he got it, but the consensus is that it was a bad deal. Hopefully it doesn’t end up costing TM more than just the Tiger costs.

It’s actually a great story, but I can be a bit of a romanticist. Tiger is climbing up from the bottom, and so is TaylorMade. Though Tiger hasn’t won a Tour Event in 4 years, TaylorMade has had a pretty shoddy run itself. They had a few failed entries into the market, the SLDR (Mediocre) and JetSpeed (Total Fail) come to mind. They are currently the red-headed step child in The Adidas Portfolio, and they single-handedly blew up the bottom line at Dick’s Sporting Goods.
I am a fan of both, and I would like to see Tiger get competitive again, and TaylormMade Continue its drive forward. I play Aeroburner Fairways, as well as an M2 Driver (Best Driver I’ve ever owned) and and M2 Hybrid. If we want to see the industry make a stronger comeback than the slow plod it’s been for the past 3 years, we need to pull for both of them.
      Just my 2 Cents.

Disclaimer: I don’t like Tiger, but I can be objective I think. I personally think he is effectively done being a “competitive” golfer. I don’t think he can stay healthy long enough to build the momentum he needs to compete with today’s golfers. I think his head is a little bit the problem, and I think there is a big difference between what he says to the microphones and the reality. His game did not show up to Torry or Dubai “ready to win”. Not even close. He says things like wanting to swing in a way that doesn’t hurt. That is not a golfer focused on winning. And it should tell us all that pain is right there waiting to happen for him. I thought he looked hurt on Thursday in Dubai. I don’t see how anyone can argue that. He walked and made basic day to day movements like someone that was protecting an injury. He bent over slow and gingerly, he got out of bunkers slow. Not shocked he withdrew. His body language was not that of a confident man. He was dejected after his FIRST tee ball went left of left. THE 1ST HOLE!!! I also think he is lying through his teeth to the media. I don’t blame him but I don’t think he believes anything he is saying. That being said, I don’t think Tiger has the drive to put in the work he would need to regain top golfer form. He likes being a dad, he likes spending time with his kids. Will he commit to climbing a difficult mountain like the golf world when he (may be) perfectly content playing on the beach with his kids??? I don’t think so. Fortunately, the golf world will be fine without him. Great young talent and its all around. Too bad people are missing it cause Tiger isn’t playing. The golf world moved on from Arnie and Jack and they will eventually move on from Tiger. He should enjoy his kids and his money and whatever he has left of his health. Thanks for all you have done for the game.

Good points. IMHO,you’re right…and wrong..about the world moving on from Jack and Arnie. It did so, true, but move is all it did. UNTIL Tiger came along as a DOMINANT player, like Jack and Arnie were, IN THEIR PRIME. Tiger had no equal. Even Messrs Kite and Watson said that when Tiger was playing, everyone else was playing for second place. True, there’s a great mix of young talent that can win any given tourney. But the odds on favorite to win? Every week? We haven’t, and might not see again, anyone like that.

Valid points Chris. My point wasn’t so much that there are equivalent talents but equivalent interest. I agree that their wasnt the same interest or dominant player but that if people could get past tiger not competing and there not being a dominant player in the game they would see great golf being played. Arguably better golf for viewing without the player winning by 10 every week. But the world of bandwagon fans “requires” a dominant player. Bandwagon fans is a proven fact, just look at the most popular teams in every sport, they are the teams that had the most success the last couple years. Most people are bandwagon fans because they want to watch their player win every tournament. My opinion is so they dont have to be disappointed or proven wrong when they cock off all week about who will win. What other reason would there be for not wanting a strong field top to bottom that produces great drama and intrigue in who will win? Turning on a tournament to see a 5 way tie on the back nine with 15 guys within 2 of the lead is all a golf fan can ask for. I personally dont want to see another dominant player. I love seeing all kinds of guys win. Great battles down the stretch or come from behind wins. Personally a guy leading by 7 doesn’t interest me at all even if it is one of my favorites. The media plays into that and kind of shapes the golf fans way of thinking on that subject. Hopefully that was clear enough to understand what I wanted to say.

Call me crazy but I also think that part of Tiger choosing Taylormade is the fact that when he does decide to call it quits or even before, he will purchase Taylormade or be the majority investor in a team that purchases Taylormade. I think thats part of his “2nd phase” of life.

On the subject. It’ll be interesting to see. As you say, Tiger is still the biggest single name in golf. I also agree with RK Boss, I don’t think we’re going to actually know where Tiger really is for a little while yet. I honestly think his current game is confused between the muscle memory and psychology of his old swing, given how long that was ingrained and the new swing he had been developing. It’s going to take him a while to relax and trust his new swing on tour… Whether that’s good enough remains to be seen, but I don’t think we’ve seen the finished product of this version of Tiger yet.

Now he is not hitting them with TM drivers. So, is the problem the arrow or the indian? Me thinks it just might be the indian.
