Tells Us What You Think! – Cobra Golf Brand Survey

Intro By: Tony Covey

It’s Been While

It’s been over 2 months since we published our Nike Brand Survey, and we still haven’t published the results. Relax…we’re not hiding anything. It’s just that I happen to think the Nike situation deserves  a bit of a deeper drive, and so we’re going to have an entire State of Nike Golf According to Me article up relatively soon.

Patience (extreme patience) people.

Today we’re seeking your feedback on Cobra Golf (we’ll save the PUMA part for later).

I’m going to let you in on a little secret. For the all the accusations that get thrown around (at one time or another I’ve apparently been in bed with nearly everyone in the golf industry), I actually do approach everything I write without bias. But if you asked anybody who knows me (and plays golf with me), they might tell you that I have a certain fondness for Cobra PUMA products. What can I say? I love their color…and their vibe. And it doesn’t hurt that their gear, while probably underappreciated, is really, really good.

My 2 cents…the Tour Trusty’s “Silver Medal” was the single biggest travesty on this year’s “Hot” List. I’m not going to let this go. It’s a seriously huge oversight.

I’m also fortunate enough to be able to spend some time with the Cobra Golf team. You’ll have to take me at my word when I tell you that they’re not only some of the most fun, they’re some of the smartest people you’ll find in the golf industry.

With all of that said, it doesn’t actually matter what I think. It’s all about what you think. So you tell us… What do you really think about Cobra Golf? How do you think their products stack up against the rest of the industry’s?

There’s Something In it For You. . . One Of You, Anyway

One survey taker (you have to complete the survey) will be randomly selected to receive a MyGolfSpy Prize Package.

The survey is only 21 (short) questions long, and the first handful is all about you. That’s not so bad right?

Take the Survey

While I still don’t love it, based on reader demand, we have added an “average” option to a few of our questions. Please use it wisely

Our survey record is nearly 4000 complete responses. I’d love to see that number crushed. Break the record, and I’ll up the prize package.

Wanna see the results? We’re going to publish the results of this survey for everyone to see. Be sure to check back soon to find out what other MyGolfSpy readers truly think about the biggest names in golf.

Just purchased a Cobra amp cell driver and it has been quite easy to hit and is a good performer .Some of my golfing buddies like how easy is to hit the golf driver and how straight it goes on controlled shots after playing a bit with the different lofts.

I have played cobra woods almost exclusively for 6 years and love their performance. Find the bio cell 3 wood to be the best of the season (x 2hot and jet speed reeeal close) and expect a fine showing in the coming most wanted tests. BTW the new lime green offering in the bio cell line looks delicious..

Absolutely love my AMP driver, 3 wood and 3 hybrid. I have mizuno JPX 800 pro for 4-PW and MPT-11 for my wedges 52, 56, and 60 and am considering demoing the trusty rusty wedges. I don’t need much of adjustable alignment and lofts that the last 2 lines have launched, but cobra is great for me.

Ed, I referred to those above…Good balls, speed rated ….a little hard but very playable..I found them at Sam’s Club on closeout already discontinued about 10-12 years ago. Bought a couple dozen at the time…Probably made by another manufacturer to put their name on…Felt a little Bridgestone E6 ish..

used to have all cobra clubs, but bought a set of adams irons last year. still got my trusty 3-wood though. love it. my real question if anyone can answer it is what happened to their balls they used to make. I used them for a couple years when they were out with them. now no longer on the market. always loved the feel and how they felt with a flush hit on them. but alas no more golf balls by cobra or I haven’t seen any in years now and I look for them all the time..if anyone knows or has any cobra golf balls please inform me of where to find them. of course no one has probally even heard that they made a ball at 1 time but yes they did.

I feel Cobra has gotten a bad rap in between the daya of Hal Irwins success on senior tour until they were dumped by Titleist. Since the yiunger generation abd Puma taken over I see some success in thw future for Cobra. I’ve been playing the pro mb’s for a few years now and they are excellent quality and design, now its time for me to look into the driver and fairwY category. I’ve been hearing they have made some great strides and if they are as good as their irons, I’m all in!

Bought a set of the S3’s (LW-6; 3,4,5 hybrid) two years ago and use them 4 – 5 times a week. Love the classic look and the quality. Haven’t seen anything that could be considered an improvement.
Bought a ZL Encore driver a year and a half ago and have the same opinion as my S3’s. For a fairly basic open, neutral, closed driver I have yet to see anything else on the market that tempts me to switch.
Good feel, good sound and good appearance all add up to a really good set of clubs I’m proud to carry and use.

Bring back the S3 Pro CB/MB combo iron sets and then we’ll talk…until then, too much flash for a classic brand like Cobra Golf. No need to be flashy…the name brand speaks for itself

I have to agree with the RAT. All the flashy colors and the odd name Bio Cell… Kinda throws me off. While their equipment may be quality stuff, I don’t like the selling point. Not into all their flashy colors, funky looks, and their game improvement irons are atrocious to look at. For some reason the look of their clubs prevent me from even testing them.

Bill is pretty much right on.I think that before Puma bought Cobra I would say they were all about performance on the cutting edge of design with outstanding quality, I still play the ZL driver because it’s still cutting edge and High performance. This is why I liked Cobra ! Now it’s
colors and flash “smoke and mirrors” show and no GO. Ricky plays a special one of one driver and copiedTitlest irons . GO Back to the High Performance cutting Edge Design where every pro would prefer to play a COBRA Driver rather than a TM or Callaway,Ping. Looking young and looking good isn’t getting your Staff players in the WIN column.ie Ian, Ricky .Is Puma a clothing company that happens to offer golf clubs as a side line? Have never owned any Cobra equipment until I went for the Tour Trusty Black in 56 Deg late last year.
That is one of the sweetest wedge I’ve ever hit and I just couldn’t resist buying after realising almost every shot was consistent and the dispersion was tight.
Was very interested in the Amp cell drivers and hybrids but never took the plunge until the Tour Trusty. I really like the different colour schemes though.

Been playing Cobra for a while now, their clubs are great quality and reasonable priced.
I play the Cobra S2 driver , Pro CB forged irons, (2) 2013 Amp Cell Hybrids . if you looking for an easy to hit hybrid ,try these. the sound of the face is sweet.
Cobra always have made excellent drivers, very long indeed. Now I have my eyes on the new Amp Cell Pro forged irons, check them out, a beauty. I may hold buying those for now because of the Obamadontcare economy we are in.

Luke- If they are not “competing” in a respective equipment category they therefore have no “competitors” in that category. You are expected to weigh them against the other manufacturers within the categories of offered product.

I think it was a fair expectation.

I HAVE to use the offset driver that Cobra makes – no other driver works as well for me. And, they’ve improved it – well, it hits as straight as the last version, but seems to be longer – as an aging guy, that’s important!!! I love my Cobra driver. btw: some of the survey answers COULD have been N/A – for example – I don’t use Cobra irons (again, what works best for me is the most important), so all questions are not relevant.

Just what I was thinking. My perception from Cobra is they stress that they try to cover as
many golfers as possible. They don’t hide the fact that they make offset clubs too to aid the majority of us who get out when we can. Go to most any other club website and you usually have to find the specs. to know face angles. Recently went up 1degree to a 11.5 S3Max just waiting for the weather to break. I’ve physical issues and age to deal with now and that’s fine, I don’t mind. The S3 Max helps me compensate and keeps me in the fairway very often. When I’m not it sure wasn’t the club! Believe it or not I can work a very nice fade with this club! For me, move up a tee, play steady and use equipment that doesn’t break the bank and helps me play the best I can at this point in life. That’s Cobra.

My only Cobra story: I hit the longest drive of my life with a demo King Cobra driver I borrowed for the round in 1997 and have not really played Cobra clubs since. However, all of the buzz around here and on the forum has piqued my interest.

It’s funny that Nike and Cobra were the first two companies brought into the fray because for different reasons I don’t really look to them for equipment. They are both improving their lines rapidly and may have a solid future. I have owned Cobra equipment in the past and they have been cutting edge equipment wise on some levels. The original Baffler is still emulated by most companies for getting long distance shots out of the rough or bad lies. Cobra was the first manufacturer I recall that had a line of balls designed for different swing speeds that Callaway is currently marketing. It was a good idea that didn’t really catch on at the time (they were good but not great balls) but I agree with the premise. I’ve heard repeated good things about their wedge line. I gamed the Cobra ZL for two seasons which was a beautiful club and liked that they were attempting to push the composite head envelope.
Since their take over from Puma, the PERCEPTION is that they became trendier at the cost of engineering. I capitalize perception because I don’t think it’s accurate. Unfortunately for me, the Cobra products I’ve used and tried the last few years didn’t work well for me.
The ZL driver was gorgeous but I suspect was limited by the shaft. I found the same to be true for the AMP Cell drivers I hit extensively. Beautiful design and I loved the integration of adjustable lofts. Once again, I suspect the shafts undermined a real quality driver for my swing speed and transition. I also suspect many have had great success with them.
So, FOR ME, I’ve ended up with the perception that the Puma owned Cobra is about clothes aimed at youth and clubs that don’t suit my game. Not saying it’s accurate, and I’ll continue to follow their products, but that’s my take away.

I feel the same too. I think Nike and Cobra are still more into apparel, but their equipment lines are improving. The first quality driver i ever bought new was Cobra 460EZ and hit some amazing drives with it. Since then i always try their stuff but the shafts in the cobras are very weak for me, but i love the colors. The original Trusty Rusty wedge was phenomenal. I still think their irons need work but i think their best offering to date was the S3. Back in high school i remember thinking you were really something if you had Taylormade equipment or a King Cobra driver. They lost that somewhere but i think they are making their way back.

I think that a “N/A” option should be needed for questions like “How does Cobra Golf’s equipment compare to its competitor’s?”, since I don’t think Cobra makes putters or balls. I ended up choosing “significantly worse” only because they don’t exist!

      Reply

Why would you choose “significantly worse” due to them not producing a particular product?

A lot of companies don’t have “full lineups”. You compare what they do actually make to what is comparable on the market.
By that logic, I hope you pick significantly worse for PING also….bc they don’t make balls.

Putters and balls were left in inadvertently. They have been removed and won’t be a factor in the survey results.
