TESTED: EVNROLL Gravity Grip

TESTED: EVNROLL Gravity Grip

The EVNROLL line of putters has been a strong performer in our annual Most Wanted Testing since the day it launched. Guerin Rife and his team have pushed the limits of putter technology with their patented face grooves. From the ER9 Putter that touted 10,000 MOI, to the Tour Stroke trainer, Guerin has spent his career developing technologies to help golfers sink more putts.

Outside the box thinking is kind of his thing.

At the 2019 PGA Show, we stopped by the EVNROLL booth to check out Guerin’s latest invention – the Gravity Grip.  With a 10″ steel rod placed one-half inch below the shaft and inside the grip, the grip is designed to provide a more direct link between the putter face and the golfer’s hands. According to Rife, “by tying the hands to the putter face, [it] promotes keeping the putter’s face angle square through the entire hitting area.”

Our Sam Robinson put the EVNROLL Gravity Grip to the test. We used a Foresight GCQuad Launch Monitor and the Essential Putting Module to better understand how the Gravity Grip influences the putting stroke.

I think this is a great grip, have tried it on several different putters and pretty much worked better on any of the ones I tried it on .

I have changed putters once or twice a year forever. This is my 3rd year with the ER5. Have gone back and forth between the stock grip and the gravity grip. I have stuck with the gravity grip based on its shape and counterbalance. I have counter balanced putters before but with the weight spread through out the grip has a better feel for me than having all of the counterbalance weight at the butt end (Odessey) or at the other end of the grip like the Lamkin.

Would it be an overkill to use a EVNROLL gravity grip with a stability tour putter shaft?

I think that would be a legit setup.. I’ve been wanting a Stability shaft ever since I first saw one. Let me know if you end up with that setup

I went to a fitting at the EVNROLL facility in Carlsbad in December and came away with the ER5 hatchback with the GG. I really liked the grip, but after a dozen years with a Winn Jumbo for my chunky fingers I just couldn’t get used to how it sat in my left hand. Lover the feel, loved the counterbalancing, but it just did fit my hand the way I was used too. Swapped back to my old grip and the ER5 is deadly.

Oh so it’s possible to do a fitting at the main location? Is there an extra cost?

All these putter tests are very much unconclusive .
      So is putter fitting .
What makes you a good putter is your dexterity/skill ,your putting technique and (The most important !) your abilty to read the greens .
I have the whole bunch of putters who came out first in the Golf Spy Tests .
All of them are blade putters
I play them at home in my basement in turns on my several putting mats from different distances from 25 feet down .Honestly I don’t see much difference between them .
On the course I play usually one of my EVNROLL putters which “I trust ” the most.
My putting averages 24/28 puts per round

A putter fitting, exposes your tendencies, i.e., your stroke speed back and through, whether you have an open face or closed face at contact, whether you tend to be open or closed face after contact, and how consistently you do these things. Everyone can benefit from a proper putter fitting by getting a putter that compensates for your tendencies by giving you a more consistent outcome without having to change anything about your stroke. But if you are satisfied with your performance, then ignorance is truly bliss.

@Raymond, I respectfully disagree and I’m a +1 so I’m not a hack, but I still have the ability to shoot in the low 80’s on really tough courses. Anyways, I went to a putter fitting using the SAM PuttLab technology. Found out my stroke path and angle of attack. Turns out I would be better with a putter with a little toe hang versus no toe hang. So I bit the bullet and bought a used Envroll ER1 and out my Scotty Cameron Futura 5.5 in the garage. And I can say this the data doesn’t lie. I also brought my newly used putter back and got it cut down 1/4in and bent 1 degree. My putts over the last 40 rounds have dropped from 32/34 on avg. to 28/29. I’m a huge fan of getting fit for the right tools and a putter fitting will help out any amateur. I think lie and loft with your irons should be your first fitting though.

I purchased the Gravity Grip directly from Evenroll and put it on my Scotty Cameron Newport Select putter. Has a great feel and there is no question where the face of the putter is aiming all through the swing. Nice! The 70 gram weight in the grip did change the feel of the head weight ( Standard 2×10 g) but the line and distance control were fine. Tried adding weight ( 2×20 g) to the head, nice balance, but way too heavy overall. You have to try this grip…..

I have an ER2 with a GG and this even feels like a paid infomercial to me. I know it’s not, but far from the scientific approach you guys have done in the past. Really, stats after four putts at the PGA show? Cmon…

It’s true this isn’t as in-depth as many of our tests, but paying a bit closer attention to the video would reveal that after what we saw at the PGA Show, we reran the test at HQ to gather a larger sample size. Again…not a full blown test (and we certainly didn’t present it that way – we literally told you exactly what we did.) Not everything is going to be subjected to a full-blown test (especially not in the meaty part of Most Wanted season). We treated it as a curiosity to see if there *could* be something to it. We’re open to criticism, even with the understanding that most people have no idea what actually goes into our larger tests, but at least take the time to get your baseline facts correct.

I have the baseline facts right. To present this as anything other than “food for thought” is ridiculous. You’re testing two significantly different grips. You informed the tester of the results during the test, inducing bias. How about instead of defending this dumpster fire, you just admit you botched this one and will make it right.

My EVNROLL 2.2 with the Gravity Grip arrived yesterday, and I had a chance to try it today. The grip feels a bit slick, but probably because it is brand new. The putts were very accurate, unfortunately the greens where I played were just aerated, sandy, and slower than my carpeting! In another week they should be fast and I should be able to control the speed much better.

I bought an E9 with the short hosel and and gravity grip.

Ihe combination is very good. The grip is great but would like the option of increasing the weight and a wider grip. My hands do not turn over as much as my counter weighted Scotty putter. The roll is better and the ER9 is so stable through the stroke.

Bought the Er2 about a year ago. I wouldn’t say I was convinced by the MGS tests, but they certainly didn’t hurt. Do the grooves make the putter? Who knows , but my instinct is that my improved putting is as much to do with the custom fitting , updated head mass, and oversized grip as much as anything else. I did hit very straight putts with the original CB grip , but distance control was terrible. Got the regular weight oversized grip and am supper happy and have my distance control back. I think it’s a great example of something often mentioned on this site. Changes in clubs designs that help in one way often come at a cost for another aspect of your game. For me , CB grips helped hit it straighter, at the expense of distance control. But anyway It is the second most expensive club in my bag and I have no regrets.I was always skeptical of putter fittings but it turns out this club is the furtherst from standard in my whole bag. I am a mediocre putter and took the evenroll the a SAM lab and got outstanding scores and the pro mentioned the putter was very well fit. The SAM results were actually with the CB grip on. However, it just goes to show that what may be perfect on a computer/studio, may not translate to the course. Highly recommend if you are in Carlsbad

Wouldn’t it also have been more comprehensive if you compared the gravity grip to a standard backweighted putter? You’re saying the gravity grip made the difference but what if it was just the extra weight. Would a standard counterbalance in the butt in also produce the same results?

Love you guys but this came off as more of a shill video for Evnroll than a true test to prove the grip’s effectiveness.

Appreciate the test, but if you get feedback before you use the second putter the test is no longer valid. You are psychologically going to use the feedback on your next few swings whether you want to or not.

Glad you went back to the office to do more testing. Hopefully the results were blind until the end.

I would be interested to see the difference with the standard non tapered Evnroll grip instead of the pistol grip comparison. I would think just the different shape of the grip could account for part of the difference.

Did the grip change the rate of rotation? Does this make a putter with toe hang play more like a face balanced putter or just make you more aware of the putter face?

Interesting tech but it’s effectively trying to replicate what Edel already does as part of their fitting process. Edel has the most comprehensive fitting process of any putter company on the market. Give them a shot and you’ll save yourself from buying all these various putters off the rack trying to make one of them work for you.

Sam, when you collected the additional data, did you still putt with the standard grip first? I wonder if knowing the face was open with the standard grip may have urged you to compensate with the gravity grip. I did like the standard deviation results though. Nice addition.

Be weary and f things like this. So we got a scratch golfer, head of testing, gets anything they want right. They’re using the most wanted putter which is supposed to be the best of the best. I’d love it let Sam used his own putter as well to test face angle.

So he’s got major issues lining up a putt but it appears there’s an aiming line or a line on the floor grooved to show you exactly where to go. A simple grip change and he can suddenly aim.
An image comes to mind. Say someone invents a better scope. So you bring in a sharp shooter who can’t seem to hit a target and then using his new scope shoots nothing but bullseye ?…..would you believe it’s the scope or a very carefully created marketing thing. I hate to think this. I really do. But I cannot subscribe to the fact Sam can barely line up and make a perfectly straight 10 footer. Just doesn’t seem right to me. I’d love to try evnroll and this grip but can’t believe a tester on his own lab can’t line up a putt but put this new grip in and aim becomes near perfect.

Bring in 10 testers and put it to the test with their own gamers.

Okay, I pulled the trigger on one. I truly suck at putting. I’m a +3 iron player, a scratch wedge player, a 8 handicap driver of the ball but a 15 handicap putter lol, maybe even a 20 handicap putter. I’d shoot in the 60’s every time if I could have 26-29 putts a round instead of 32-36 putts a round. Great review but I still want to see some others test it and report back – I’ll be the first ;) I’ve ordered one from Dicks using a 10 dollars off coupon – great deal, still had to pay for shipping though. Can’t wait. Got the budget golf refurb of the ER5 and will install this on it. Cheers and I love MGS but dang they cost me a lot of money hahaha.
