Effective Practice = Improved Performance

By Dave Wolfe
I guess that’s my spin on the old practice makes perfect adage. With golf, just practicing is not enough. We all know that it is totally possible to practice your swing without any resulting perfection. Blasting through a large bucket with a lousy swing is not somehow going to produce a good swing. Good, effective practice produces positive results.

Applying repeated sky marks to the driver does not.

Few of us practice putting as much as we should, and when we do practice, we may not actually be helping our game. Think about this scenario. You are on the practice green with a couple of balls. You drop the balls at your feet, read the putt, putt the first ball, and miss it left. Now knowing that it breaks left, you adjust your aim, and still miss left with the second, but by less this time. You adjust again and sink the third ball, feeling proud and confident in your improved putting ability.

Truth is, you seldom get two, let alone three, shots at a putt when you are playing a round. You read it wrong the first time, and you missed. You actually couldn’t get the break right until you rolled two balls. You made the third, but did your ability to see the break and read the putt actually improve with that practice session?

Learn To Read: It’s Fundamental

The first thing to do if you are really having trouble reading putts is to get help from an instructor. I am a firm believer in the AimPoint green reading system. I’ve taken a few classes, and I believe that the system just plain works. Don’t just take my word about AimPoint though, ask Adam Scott, Isaac Sanchez, or Stacy Lewis. Here is a photo I took at this year’s Fry’s Open showing Hunter Mahan and his caddy John Wood getting some green reading instruction from AimPoint instructor Peter Brown.

Mahan_Brown_AimPoint

Though I believe that my reads have improved because of AimPoint, practicing reads is still a bit challenging. When practicing, I don’t always know if I am making the correct read, and then executing the putt with a correct stroke.

Sure, the obvious feedback is that the ball goes in, but the ball also has a chance to go in if you make a bad read and then compensate with a bad stroke. I made the putt, but I didn’t really improve my reading, or my putting. The tight integration of reading and putting makes it difficult to practice either effectively.

What I really needed was a way to separate practicing my reads from practicing my putting mechanics?

The Perfect Putter “Putts” Perfectly

Perfect Putter-18

So how can you truly know if you made the correct read and the correct putt? One way that you can check your read is by rolling balls at your target with your hand. If you have ever tried this, you know that it is very challenging to have one roll match the next. How will you know if your proposed read of six inches left is accurate if you are spraying balls all over the place? You need to know that the roll is accurate to assess your read.

That’s where the Perfect Putter comes in to the conversation. On the most basic level, the Perfect Putter is a metal ramp that rolls golf balls. It’s not challenging to use. You place the Perfect Putter on the green, place a ball on the ramp, and then let the ball go.

No moving parts, other than your ball, I suppose. If you want the ball to roll farther, place it higher on the ramp. You can figure out how to make the ball roll shorter. The ramp is even calibrated so you can ensure that you place the ball exactly where you want, time after time.

The Perfect Putter performs a very simple, yet potentially powerful job. It rolls the ball straight. Every time, exactly the same. Unlike the practicing golfer, there is no way that the roll of the ball from the Perfect Putter can be influenced by how the ball impacts the club. The Perfect Putter can’t slightly change its swing arc, or ball position. It can’t unknowingly cut across the ball at impact, imparting spin on the ball.

The Perfect Putter consistently rolls the ball perfectly.

Perfect Putter-06

How will this help me putt better?

Improve Your Reads

Let’s say that you have taken a class covering the AimPoint Express Read methods. You now know where you should be aiming based upon your read. Normally, to practice this read, you put a tee in the green at your target spot and start hitting balls with your putter. What you are actually testing are two variables, your swing and your read.

The Perfect Putter takes your swing out of the equation. You can now aim the Perfect Putter at the target from your read, place a ball on the ramp at the appropriate distance calibration, and roll the ball. If it goes in, you know your read was correct. If it was incorrect, you know right away if you under or over read the break.

If you practice this way, you will effectively be able to assess and likely improve your reads. Yes, you do still need to practice, but your practice will be far more productive.

Perfect Putter-17

Improve Your Putting

Let’s change gears and look at the other side of the putting story, actually putting the ball. Once you dial in the read with the Perfect Putter, you can now practice the putt, knowing with confidence that you are aimed at the right target. If you are missing the cup, you now know that it is because of your stroke, and not your read. This too should focus your practice, and yield improved results. Identifying the problem is a critical step toward fixing the problem.

Let me give you an example. In my garage, I have a 10-foot practice green. I recently had to move it around and when I got it back into place, I was sure that it wasn’t level. I checked it with a bubble level, and it looked OK, but balls I putted were just not rolling straight.

When the Perfect Putter showed up at my house, the first green I used it on was my practice green. Low and behold, it rolled straight. Long story short, I realized that I had picked up a bit of a cut across the ball when putting, adding spin at impact that looked like break when it rolled. The Perfect Putter helped me to realize this, and fix this previously unknown flaw. I blamed the green, but it was me, and I never would have known without the Perfect Putter.

About the Perfect Putter

Perfect Putter-13

The Perfect Putter is a simple tool, but there is a whole bunch of engineering and precision in its construction. First, it is durable, made of non-corrosive 316 stainless steel. The steel sides of the Perfect Putter are bolted together at numerous positions, ensuring that the tracks that the ball rolls upon are straight, and parallel to each other. This thing is built to last.

The tracks can either be used in their bare metal form, or sheathed with the recommended silicone rail covers. It will work with or without the covers. You will just need to compensate for speed a bit if you go cover-free as the calibration is set for with-cover operation.

Speaking of calibration, the Perfect Putter also functions as a stimp meter. Now you can really know what your green speed is at your home course. This should help your reads as well.

The Perfect Putter – Premium Pack includes some useful upgrades for your Perfect Putter. First, it comes with the Perfect Putter. Additionally, you get a ramp extender for practicing long range putts, or practicing on really slow greens. You also get their set of stainless steel putting gates. These four gates vary in size from the widest Beginner gate to the nearly-ball wide Perfect gate. These gates alone are great practice tools. You also get a carrying case that everything fits into. I also fit an elevated string line into the case, which pairs nicely with the workings of Perfect Putter.

Who Would Benefit From The Perfect Putter?

My impulse answer to that question is everyone who putts would benefit from using the Perfect Putter. How can you not benefit from practicing with such a tool? Maybe you don’t use AimPoint to read greens. You still, hopefully, use some system to read greens. The Perfect Putter lets you know right away if your reads are correct, or if you should be looking into different reading strategies.

I think that the Perfect Putter should be a part of the arsenal at every teaching facility. Every facility should have one, if not every instructor. Instructors can use it to show their students exactly where to aim, and then also more effectively diagnose swing issues when the student misses the putt. Speaking from my experience using the Perfect Putter, knowing that the read is absolutely correct allows the golfer to really focus on improving putting mechanics.

On a synergistic side note, when I was on the practice range at the Fry’s Open, I saw one of the people working with a tour pro with a Perfect Putter case slung over his arm. As it turns out, there are quite a few players on the tours using the perfect putter as part of their practice program. There are a whole bunch of professional testimonials on the Perfect Putter site, but this is one of my favorites:

The Perfect Putter is a fantastic product. It takes reading greens to a complete different level. In fact, if you are trying to read a green without it is as if you were handcuffed. It is a superb, a must have device that should have been around when I was playing for a living.

The Only Flaw With The Perfect Putter

There is only one thing preventing The Perfect Putter from being something that I would recommend that every golfer should buy, and that’s the price. Don’t get me wrong, I truly believe that using the Perfect Putter while practicing putting will allow all golfers to improve their putting. However, the Perfect Putter’s premium materials and construction carry a premium price tag.

The Perfect Putter Standard Pack costs $239, with the tested Premium Pack costing $299. I think that the Premium Pack is the way to go, as you get the putting gates, the case, and a stand that helps stabilize the unit. Regardless, this is an expensive tool.

In no way am I saying that the Perfect Putter is overpriced. I’m just saying that it’s expensive. Though I am not privy to their manufacturing costs, the stainless steel construction, along with the multiple machined bolts, and precision construction likely does not come cheap.

$239 for the Perfect Putter is probably a fair price, but it is still a lot of money for most people to spend on a putting aide. Will it help your putting? I feel confident that it will, but it’s probably out of most golfers’ golf budget.

I’d like to drive a Mercedes, but my job says that I should drive a Honda.

That’s what I would really love to see, the Honda version of the Perfect Putter. Perhaps there’s was way to keep the manufacturing tolerances, but to build it from a plastic polymer rather than steel, thus dropping the unit cost down to the $50-ish range. It may not be possible, but if there was a less expensive version, it would almost be a mandatory purchase for the golfer looking to improve his or her putting.

However, let’s address the price from a different direction for a moment. How many golfers will buy a new putter when they are looking to improve on the course? How much do they spend on that putter? Golfsmith currently has 118 putters in the $100-$250 range, and another 34 putters above $250. Keep your old putter, spend that money on a Perfect Putter, and perhaps a lesson or two.

The Perfect Putter

Perfect Putter-07

If the price is not an issue for you, I would recommend that you seriously consider adding the Perfect Putter to your training tool contingent. If you are an instructor, or in charge of instruction at your facility, you should probably order one today.

The ability to see exactly how the ball will roll on the green is extremely valuable. You don’t need to trust your read when you practice, you can see if you read the putt right or wrong immediately, and definitively. If you practice your reads with the Perfect Putter, your reads will improve. Plus, if you know the read is correct, but you didn’t make the putt, you can be confident that the issue lies with your putting stroke.

The Perfect Putter’s premium construction does carry a premium price tag, but the premium construction also means that you will not likely need to replace the unit any time soon. As long as it’s not abused, the Perfect Putter should last a long time.

When I read putts I determine the low point and walk to it. I then read it based on the slope assuming a standard speed around the hole. The perfect putter would help me experiment to really see “perfect” putts so that I’ll have good images and unconscious reference. Probably save me 3 strokes per round.

This is a great tool. I would use it in conjunction with Aimpoint to help show reads to students. Have players aim where they think it should be and then show them where it actually needs to aim. Would blow people away with how poorly they read greens. Very cool training aid!

I try to find what the entry point where the ball would go in the hole (the new center)… then try to draw a line backward from that point and find an intersecting point on that line where the break point would be and choose that as aim line.

Some of my friends have thought me aimpoint and I got used to it after a couple of games. However I don’t depend on aimpoint completely instead, I normally go by the regular read from behind the ball and behind the hole. I then use aimpoint as a confirmation that I have ready it somewhat right. I then line up the ball and putt it! I really hope I get to use the Perfect Putter!

I read the put from both sides of the hole, but base 90% of my decision on what I see from below the hole. Sometimes this can play tricks on the eye. Using this method, I could now take the perfect putter and test my theory, and begin to get a better read by watching how the ball roles with what my mind is telling me and hopefully pull those little things out of my mind that mislead me to miss the putt due to a “trick of the eye”.

Up until this year I had NO system. I actually paid $450 for a short game school, got videoed, measured, the works. When it came time for the one on one review of my putting the pro said there was nothing in my mechanics to change. When I asked why I couldn’t sink more putts the pro turned to me, and in a dead serious voice, said “Because you can’t read greens worth a sh*t!” Imagine, I paid $450 bucks for that.

This summer it all changed, I took the Aimpoint Express class from James Kinney, Golf Tec Omaha. What a difference. I can now read a green. It works. The key though is practice. With the Perfect Putter I’d have a complete system. I want to WIN!

      Greenreading Indisputable Facts:
–everybody including golfers live in a World of Optical Illusions (WOI).
–The WOI includes golf putting surfaces.
      — Optical illusions on greens are the sole cause of misread putts. Staring, kneeling, walking around, even Aimpoint does not escape the WOI.
–Only the P&SI-EGOS rids of ALL optical illusions. Guaranteed by “patented” Math.
      — Golfers not using the P&SI-EGOS remain in the WOI and misread greens.

The P&SI-EGOS “Cost (in time) – Benefit” Analysis:
      P&SI-EGOS putter Benefits:
      1. Read greens quickly and accurately by ridding of all optical illusions with PATENTED MATH.
      2. MAKE putts that you never had a chance to hole before due to “optical illusions” on greens.
      3. Have CONFIDENCE never achieved before by knowing the perfect line for your preferred speed to hole each putt.
      4. Expert Greenreading means LOWER scores to achieve goals. Break 80, win Club Champ, win Majors!
      5. NO GETTING WORSE to get better. Scoring only gets better as EGOS removes “optical illusions” on greens.
      6. Free technical SUPPORT to fix “pilot error” if there is ever a greenreading issue.

The Cost in Caddie or Golfer’s time:
      1. Learn EGOS which makes Expert Greenreading automatic, quick & precise.
      2. Get accustom to the “Feel & Look” of a Surveying Instrument putter with the 360° balance feature.

This device doesn’t have a weakness and if you are serious about improving your putting (thereby shooting lower scores), the price doesn’t matter. Aimpoint would be a haven for playing other courses. Being a very good lag putter, the pace of different greens could be calibrated. As long as the practice green rolls very similar to the on course greens. A great tool for beginning golfers to get an idea on the nuances of putting.

I’ve never taken Aim Point but played with a guy regularly that did take it. He showed me what he could. So, basically I use a Cliff Notes’ version of Aim Point and that’s how I would incorporate Perfect Putter, by using it to verify my reads during putting practice. As a teacher, clients are always asking me how to read greens so I talk about high and low areas on the green. I will place tees in the ground or use a elevated string to determine the high side of the putt. The Perfect Putter looks easy to use and would help explain reads much easier. Easy to carry out to the practice green.

The only thing missing is being able to hit the perfect putt on the perfect line every time…and this would be a putting “iron byron”. Would be great to get line and speed at the same time with no human error.

I get down behind the ball and look for the breaks in the green, trying to identify the furthest most point in a straight line. Then I pick a spot about 6 to 8 inches past and that is my putting line. Like in the movie, “The Legend of Bagger Vance”, I look for the path to be revealed to me. When it is, I know I can make the putt.

It’s great when you can practice and some of the variables that occur when you need to make a putt have definitive answers before you start.

I approach the putt from behind, kneel down, access the slope/break, fight the vertigo, stand up, wait for the nausea to pass, address the ball with my Ping Koetch, look at the hole again, line up the little white marks, look again, realign the little white marks, make a pendulum swing from the shoulders, close eyes and pray. Still haven’t quite managed to break 216 yet.
So instead of doing all that crap, I would practice with the perfect putter and then just cut to the swing and pray part.

I start when walking to the green to see the big picture of the layout of the green. Mark the ball and step back to see the break, walk towards the hole on the low side of the break, then determine the way the ball wil go on the last third of the length of the put, then determine how the hit it the first 2/3 to get to the last part. All that is left is get the feel for the length, visualize the ball going on the decided line, take stance and pull the trigger.

This would help me tremendously because I feel that’s my biggest flaw is seeing line having a bad back I can’t get down to read every putt as much as I would like this would save my back and anyone who has knee problems.

Reading putts starts with watching all balls being hit to the green and see if they consistently break the same way or maybe affected by unseen rise in the green. Within fifty yards, reaccess contours and green shade for determining grain. Once on green, let feet tell you if green appears faster or slower than previous greens in order to determine more or less hardness of hit. Read putt from behind ball and low side of roll. Light grip, slow backswing and confident follow through are my goals.
The Perfect Putter logically would help improve skills and reduce errors. Would love to have one.

My green reading system is to look at the green and try to find the fall line. Then I try to estimate the slope and speed based on other greens on the course. The most frustrating thing for me after I miss a putt is not knowing whether I read it wrong but putted it well or whether I read it well but putted it poorly. (I try not to think about the possibility that I read it wrong and putted it poorly.) The Perfect Putter would help me figure this out and improve my green reading.

I was thinking about getting The Absolute Reader by Esoteric Golf (http://www.intheholegolf.com/ARGPA/Absolute-Reader-Golf-Putting-Aid.html). It looks like it would do the same thing, but The Perfect Putter looks like the super deluxe option. I would like to try it.

      Thanks.

One of the downsides of training aids such as this can be seen by the writer’s example. Not only could he not believe his own eyes, he couldn’t even believe a carpenter’s level. I find it amusing that he could only accept that his practice green was level after he rolled a ball down a metal ramp .”I would never have known without the Perfect Putter.” Does no one else find such an assertion to be silly. At best, I find this device to be an amusing oddity. At worst, it will be like a set of training wheels welded to your child’s bicycle. After a few hundred hours of practice with this device I, too, would never trust a carpenter’s level – let alone my own eyes and senses.

I’ve never been a fan of putting training tools because I have never found one yet that I thought had any value. This Perfect Putter tool does appeal to me. I know how important it is to get a good read. I don’t use AimPoint, but I do know how to read a putt. This device would show me how well I actually read greens. I would love to win. And if I do, it will be on the putting green at my course where everyone can see it. Thanks for the opportunity.

Argh! Practice like you play. I will ask starter if the practice green rolls like the course. Putt a few balls 20+ feet uphill, downhill, flat and cross hill in both directions. If the practice green bears no relationship to the course, it may take me 2 holes to adjust. Stimp numbers mean nothing to me. I have no capacity to putt to a 6 vs an 11. With notable exception of Bermuda greens, reading greens should be as simple as see it, feel it do it. As you walk to green you should already be getting a good idea of the breaks. By the time you have removed the pin and walked to your ball you should have acquired all the data you need. The overuse of ramps, strings, chalk, gates, etc diminishes one’s ability to actually learn to putt. It certainly creates woefully slow golfers. If my group had a tee time behind someone using this device on the practice green, we would be pleading with starter to let us start on the back nine.

Reading a green is not that simple unless you play on a course without any subtle breaks. Also, this isn’t something you warm up with before your round. It’s something you use during a practice session.

Some of the best training tools are the simply in design. In practicing I always found greens to have subtle breaks that affect my putting. The perfect putter would impart how the ball should roll so I would fine that info priceless. I think it would make be a better putter.

I currently take the traditional approach to green reading. I like to walk up to them, look for drainage areas, and then get a quick walk around the hole to see if the break possibly changes.

Thing is, I have no way to verify whether or not I read the green right. If I make it, did I get lucky? If I miss, was it a faulty read, or did I push it? This device would help me in that regard.

I don’t see how practicing rolling putts on that apparatus is going to help you make real putts under real pressure. Then factoring in the size and cost of it makes it not practical. If I see someone using that on the practice green I’m doubling the bet. Why not use something like a putting fork which is smaller, cheaper, and gives you the ability to practice your read and rolling the ball on that line?

I’m an eight handicap with dreams of becoming a 5 or below. The problem is this dream has been going on for three long frustrating years due to poor putting. I’ve heard of Aimpoint and even reached out to an instructor but due to the steep hourly cost per lesson it’s been placed on the back burner (for now). I feel the Perfect Putter mixed with Aimpoint instruction would be the perfect combo for achieving the results I’m looking for. My hope is that with enough practice I’ll be able to match my back swing to the “speed” gauges on the Perfect Putter to improve my speed.

This is an interesting product and I really like quality craftmanship which seems to have gone into this. However, the price tag is steep! Folks should know that the raw materials, milling, packaging for a smaller batch product (vs mass produced) is not cheap so I don’t think they’ve offhandedly inflated the price. The idea is cool, HOWEVER this is also something I (anyone) can accomplish with a section of my son’s Hot Wheels racing track which was under $30.

It does introduce a pretty neat concept for folks to tinker with. Can you match your putts’ pace and line to a perfect putt.

Plumb bob, grain follows the sun and ‘imagine if you poured a cup of water on the green which way would it run’. All of these ‘home remedies’ have failed me for the 43 years I’ve played the game. Putting is why I shoot 92 more often than I shoot 85. I’d like to keep it in the 80’s more often in my ‘gray years’. I can’t lag, and I’m atrocious inside 3 feet. I am patient zero!

I use a basic form of AimPoint for reading greens. Basic in that I’ve never actually taken the class. But I use the finger method which at least helps with committing to a target. This device would sure help with finding flat spots on the green which would help my stroke.

the slower the green speed the harder it is to read the green. I am dealing with a corrective lense in one eye. I have to rely on my dominate eye only. Usually I step off the putt from pin back.Having a true stroke would be a great benefit if that’s what perfect putt is all about

On my practice course I don’t know if the Perfect Putter would help much. I would be willing to bet that if you rolled putts like in the video, that only half of them would end up in the hole.LOL. The greens are that bad. But I don’t practice putting there much anyway; only full and approach shots. However, I would definitely use this on other courses in the area.

I like fast greens and generally putt pretty well after I get a feel for the green speed. I use the SENW method; locating the straight up the slope as the South position (S is the easiest to start with). Then move to the East position for a right to left break, then North straight downhill, and then finally West for a left to right breaker. Each position is one step from the hole and I only putt one ball. If I miss I start all over from the S position. When I make all 4 putts, I move two steps from the hole and start all over again. I have gone to three steps from the hole, but only if I have enough time. I should go longer, but spending all day putting is not my idea of fun.

I only do this drill specifically for putting practice. I don’t do this every time I play a course, but I will putt from all four positions. Using the Perfect Putter would certainly help me line up the SENW positions.

Depending on the length of the putt, I close my eyes where my ball is and walk towards the hole. It’s amazing how your feet can read the green on which way it slopes. I then pick a target no more than 5 inches away from my ball and take a solid stroke. I also want to add, this would be a great tool to show my son Lucas that’s 4 years old how to read greens and what took look for before making a putt.

Can’t see myself spending upwards of $3 bills on the gizmo when I should be spending more time on the practice green instead of the range bombing slice and duck hook after slice and duck hook with the driver.

I like to get a feel of what the putt does in relation to the straight putt. The Perfect Putter is an amazing device because it will help me test my green reading and work on my visualization. I feel like I tend to under read all my putts so this device will give me an answer.
I also like to set up chalk lines and the putting string for practice but I am never sure if I set them up correctly. The Perfect Putter will make my practice a lot more productive and I will stop second guessing myself.

This ONE item would GET me to practice my putting! It would force me to! Why have it and not use it! This would be awesome!

My current way to read a green is to squat behind the ball and try to determine the high-point between my ball and the hole. Once I find my aim point, I attempt to stand parallel to that spot. I then begin to look at the hole and take practice swings trying to get a feel for how hard I need to putt the ball.

I’m positive that by just practicing more and getting an idea of how good my “reads” are by using this item, I’d improve immensely! I really would benefit greatly from owning this device.

i walk the green from my ball to the hole, look around the hole to see what the green fors all around the hole then walk back to my ball on the opposite side to get a feel for uphill/downhill, look at the break. Then I pick my line, followed by picking an intermediate target in front of my ball and line up to that. I struggle with speed and line. I think the Perfect putter would help with that.

My current system isn’t great and it shows in my inability to make scoring putts. As I walk up to the green I asses where the straight putts are in relation to my ball. Since time is always a factor I try to read the green from many angles by pulling the pin, walking it off the green, and taking the long way back to my ball. Based on where the straight putt is tells me which direction the ball will break. I also watch my playing partners putt their balls and try to get a read off of that.

I would be interested in Aimpoint lessons. Where do you go to get lessons?

      Reply

you don’t need a lesson for that!

aiming is such an approximation anyway, the proper aiming point depends on how aggressively (speed) you’re going to hit the putt, also on whether or not your ball jumps off your clubface or starts rolling immediately.

All you need to know is that you have to imagine the way your ball will curve first and then imagine the tangent to that curving line. the point you’re ‘aiming’ for is on that tangent.

      Reply

      Christopher

You ball will never touch your aimline on a constant slope, this is the main thing that throws most people, our subconscious tries to compensate but you’ll be a better putter if you don’t push and pull putts onto the correct line. If a putt breaks one-foot on a constant slope there should be about three feet of break.
