ENTER TO WIN! (Travis Mathew Shirt & Hat) Details Below

Your Loyalty Is About To Be Tested!

(Written By: GolfSpy_T) The golf manufacturers not only want you as a their customer, they want you to be exclusively their customer.

While chances are you don’t have the game to earn yourself a six or seven figure endorsement deal (and the bag full of clubs that come with it), rest assured there isn’t an OEM out there that wouldn’t love to have 14 of their clubs in your bag.  What most aren’t quite ready to acknowledge, however, is that with just about every meaningful aspect of performance maxed out by the USGA, golf companies must develop fresh ideas to entice you to buy their latest and greatest.

Could New Apparel Trend Cross-Over To Equipment?

While there have been subtle hints to the direction the industry is headed, the most complete picture of things to come isn’t being painted by an equipment manufacturer, instead it’s the brainchild of one of the most popular brands in golf apparel. And while their new program is a first of sorts within the golf industry, we’re fairly certain it’s the first of many to come.

Over the last few years if you’ve been focused on the golf equipment manufacturers never ending promises of higher launch, lower spin, and of course 10 more yards, you may not have noticed a veritable explosion in the golf apparel industry. In a relatively short period of time, apparel lines from some of the biggest names in golf have been marginalized and smaller apparel-specific companies have carved a stylish swath through the industry and into the closets of an increasing number of golfers.

As their popularity has increased so have their offerings. While many once defined golf apparel as khaki pants and polo shirt, today’s golf apparel lineups often include belts, shoes, sweaters, caps, outwear, and of course polo shirts, and an assortment of trousers and shorts that leave khaki looking as mundane as a bowl of Quaker Oats.

Travis Mathew Launches The “Polo Club”

Since the company launched in 2008, arguably no apparel company has garnered more loyal fans than Travis Mathew. With the help of Bubba Watson, an aggressive Social Media strategy, and of course, an impressive apparel collection that the company describes as progressive; blending style, function, performance and innovation, Travis Mathew has quickly become one of the most popular brands on the golf apparel scene.

What you may not know is that the apparel side of the industry is every bit as competitive as the equipment side (I would argue that it’s actually more competetive), and there isn’t an apparel company in the business that wouldn’t love to become the exclusive supplier of your golf wardrobe. To gain a leg up on their competition, and no doubt instill some real brand loyalty in their customers; late last week Travis Mathew launched what the company is calling the Travis Mathew Polo Club. . From our perspective, what’s fascinating about this new offering is that the company has adopted some of the same marketing techniques being used by the big club manufacturers.

Cobra was perhaps the first to start the Limited Edition trend with the release of their White ZL driver. They followed it up this season with the Limited Edition Long Tom Raw driver. Though we may never know exactly how “limited” certain items are, the Limited Edition trend is one we expect nearly every OEM will eventually adopt. Whether or not any equipment maker will take it to the extent that Travis Mathew has and offer a selection of product exclusively to loyal club members remains to be seen, but if I were a betting man, I’d wager that it will happen.

Travis Mathew could very well be on the bleeding edge of the next big marketing trend, and this campaign could very well be used by others to determine the viability of their own similar programs.

TM “Polo Club” – DETAILS:

The Travis Mathew Polo Club is an exclusive membership-only program geared towards providing true TM fans with the newest product before anyone else.

Members of the TM Polo Club will:

  • Receive one Polo per TM collection at a discounted rate of 20% off! (6 per year)
  • Will receive product before it is available to the public through the Travis Mathew website.
  • Can get limited edition TM products not available to the public!
  • Will receive additional TM items per delivery!

Subscription Options:

  • 6 payments of $69 charged with each Polo delivery- OR –
  • 1 payment of $395 upon your subscription to the TM Polo Club

One other relatively significant footnote about the Travis Mathew Polo Club; when they reach 500 members, one lucky member will receive an all expense paid trip to Seal Beach (California), and a $1000 shopping spree at Travis Mathew headquarters.

Full details and sign up information visit TravisMathew.com

NOT AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC!

With an apparel company leading the way, there is no need for us to speculate that we could be on the verge of an outbreak of Limited Edition product from the OEMs. We’re already there. Cobra, Nike and even Miura have all released or are about to release “Limited Edition” products in 2011. What remains to be seen is whether or not the equipment manufacturers will spin up programs similar to the Travis Mathew Polo Club that will offer their members the option to purchase equipment before the general public, and perhaps even give those same members exclusive access to equipment that will never be available to non-members.

While we know that there are some of you out there that are extremely loyal to your favorite golf companies, we do wonder whether or not golfers are willing to back that loyalty with an upfront commitment, even if it means you have access to a new TaylorMade driver that your buddies just can’t get. It’s going to be interesting to see how the golf companies handle this moving forward. They’ll need to make their members feels special, without turning away (or turning off) those guys who don’t want to join. The Travis Mathew Polo Club strikes the right balance, how well it will translate to the larger equipment segment is something we’re going to be watching very closely.

ENTER TO WIN! (Travis Mathew Shirt & Hat)

We’d love to know what you think not only about the Travis Mathew Polo Club, golf specific apparel in general, and whether or not you’d join an exclusive members only program from your favorite equipment provider. Leave a comment below and let us know some or all of the following:

  1. Do you have a segment of your wardrobe that you wear only on the golf course?
  2. How much golf specific apparel do you buy annually – is it just a shirt or two, do you dress to the 9s (pants, belts, etc.), or do you basically wear your street clothes?
  3. When it comes to golf apparel, are you fiercely loyal to a single manufacturer or do you like to mix it up a bit?
  4. Will you join the Travis Mathew Polo Club, or would you join a similar program from another apparel company?
  5. If your favorite golf equipment manufacturer offered a similar program with access to limited edition, and member’s only gear would you pay an annual fee to join?

One commenter will be chosen at random to receive a T-Shirt and hat from Travis Mathew.

I tend to only buy a couple of shirts and a couple pair of shirts a year for golf but they need to be of a style that can be worn off the course. So there is not really a golf specific section of my wardrobe. I am some what loyal to Nike and Adidas but keep an eye out for some deals on Travis Matthews. Don’t think I will be joining the TM Polo Club mainly due the fact that I have two sons into golf and I have to be a little thrifty when making purchases. I would possibly consider joining an equipment makers club before an apparel company but neither is on the horizon at this time.

I have just started up playing after a 15 year break (I got married and other crap took my money). I always played in street clothes before but this time around I have decked out my closet with a golf only section. The one thing that surprised me the most is that my Nike Flex belt made it to my daily wear wardrobe. I love it. I also was shocked that golf shoes were such a huge improvement to my game.

Since this is my first year buying golf specific clothes, I am spending a fortune (until the kids move back home anyway…). I have favored Nike and Under Armour so far but have other brands in the mix. I am not completely brand loyal but eventually will select a favorite and stick to it down the road.

I am thinking it would be fun to join the Polo Club just to have stuff no one else in my foursome would have.

If Under Armour or Nike had a program like this I would definitely join it.

I have a golf specific wardrobe but I end up wearing the shirts off the course too.

I buy 4-5 new shirts a year, a couple pairs of shoes and shorts.

I mix it up, though I like and dislike some brands more than others.

I am considering joining the TM Polo Club. The only reason I hesitate is if they send a shirt I don’t like. Camo isn’t my style at all.

Depending on the manufacturer I would join a program.

My style is “golf”; 99% of the time, I wear apparel that I could walk onto any golf course in. I love the feel and fit of dry-fit polos and my entire closet is full of them. I will buy anything that is catches my eye, but most of my clothing is Grand Slam, because of it’s price and ease to find. Plus my wife gets 30% coupons to Kohls monthly, so I’ll buy 5-6 Grand Slam shirts at a time. I probably wouldn’t join any membership programs, because I’m not loyal to any brand; if I like something I’ll get it. I do think the membership program is a good idea though.

Do you have a segment of your wardrobe that you wear only on the golf course?
Yes, some of my shirts and hats are worn strictly for golf. I like to look good on the course.

How much golf specific apparel do you buy annually – is it just a shirt or two, do you dress to the 9s (pants, belts, etc.), or do you basically wear your street clothes?
Overall, I probably only spend $200-$250 worth of golf apparel each year, but I typically shop discounted prices so my money goes further. Shirts and shorts are what I purchase the most.

When it comes to golf apparel, are you fiercely loyal to a single manufacturer or do you like to mix it up a bit?
I do tend to favor 2-3 brands, but if something looks good and has performance features I like (i.e. moisture wicking, stretch fabric, etc.) then the name on the label does not matter.

Will you join the Travis Mathew Polo Club, or would you join a similar program from another apparel company?
Right now, my budget does not allow me to join a program such as this, but I would consider something like it in the future. It seems to have some value to it.

If your favorite golf equipment manufacturer offered a similar program with access to limited edition, and member’s only gear would you pay an annual fee to join?
I would consider the program. Currently, only my Driver is a current line product. Therefore, something like this does not work for me now. In the future though, I would definitely consider it.

Very interesting spin on promoting business in the golf industry.
As a consumer of equipment and apparel I would not join a club for this opportunity to be the first to have something exclusive.
The industry is hurting enough, lower the prices and maybe more golfers would buy more often and purchase moreclothing to wear for golf .

I wear mostly chinos of various colors and poloshirts to match. In the summer, I wear shorts and polo shirts. I buy mostly from LL Bean and various discount stores like Kohls.

I would never pay to belong to an exclusive clothing cllub! I am not interested in current fashion and keeping up with the country club set. When I play golf, I play golf. I don’t compare wardrobes. I compare clubs.

I’m always looking at forward lookin ideas reagrading any aspect of golf. Clothing is just starting to make breakthroughds in this area. I.E. the new ‘Energy’ shirts being hawked by Azinger (Is this for real?). However, i’m also frugal. When it comes to golf attire, you can always get decent stuff on sale. So I’d be happy to sample one of these polos, but in reality I would not spent this much on golf attire.

I have some golf polos that I wear on and off the course. I haven’t bought any golf Branded shorts or pants, mainly because they are more expensive and no different than any other brands. I’m thrifty for sure and if they want me to join their club they will have to do better than 20% off, more like 50-75% would get my attention. But also I like certain styles better than others, because I’m skinny and I hate wearing big fat shirts. I like the slim fitting athletic fits, so I’m cheap and picky. Limited Edition stuff is not an interest to me, If I like a shirt, I wear it alot, if not I don’t.

I think other apparel manufacturers should jump on this. Get customers to sign up for the clothes their players wear during the majors. Someone like Poulter would be great for this, maybe add a version of his Tour Bags to bring in the big bucks (didn’t he have four different bags at Augusta?). Not sure if you’d wear it during the major though, you might get a few groans as you walk through the clubhouse.

If Ryan Moore signs up you can live in the cardboard box the clothes come in for that extra touch of ‘Hobo Chic’ he’s usually rocking…..

      • I don’t dress to the 9s in golf apparel, but I get quite a few items a year.
      • Again, I check out Puma first, but I’m not opposed to buying from other companies. Just as long as it’s not Nike. I haven’t had a pair of Nike golf shoes last longer than a year.
      • Probably not, but I would buy a lot of their sale items!

Although I might be interested in joining such an “exclusive club” for clothing, it would have to be weighted more towards getting a great deal price & convenience wise versus what I can get shopping around. Nearly $400 for the priveledge of buying 6 shirts plus “mystery” promo’s sounds a little steep to me.

I may buy 1-3 polo style golf shirts annually, and a large portion of my wardrobe is specifically designed for golf, but worn for many occassions other than golf, i.e. business casual dress for the office or client visits, shopping/dinner trips, dawg walking, etc., and my older golf shirts eventually graduate to lawn & garden status. I probably have a standing inventory of 50+ golf shirts as it is, and since my business associates frequently give shirts away as promo’s, my purchasing needs annually, are luckily, quite small.

Over the past few years, I have shed my single brand loyalty to Ashworth clothing to discover great sportswear by other manufacturers, and currently favor Addidas, Nike, etc. with the new high tech synthetic fabrics winning me over big time. I haven’t yet sampled clothing from these smaller boutique brands, and would love to try some Travis Matthews.

While my club ho desires rear up occassionally, not enough to justify joining a brand specific club for OEM equipment, as I like to bag a number of different brands that suit various aspects of my game. I’ve scored my most recent mint irons sets from Craigslist, so you can’t get more budget conscious than that!

The details are kind of confusing… the $400 is actually FOR 6 polos, not the privilege to buy them… If you figure out the regular price, the club price is 20% cheaper, but of course, your choice is somewhat limited and you are committed to 6.

Per the site “Subscription price includes one Travis Mathew Polo per collection (6 per year) plus additional products chosen by Travis Mathew”

I have a dedicated golf-only wardrobe, comprised mostly of Under Armour and I probably spend in the neighborhood of $500 annually on golf apparel, and that’s used solely for playing. I’m pretty loyal, once I find a quality brand, but I’m always open to trying new brands out there.

An apparel club seems a bit strange to me. If there was a mailing list of previous buyers who were given access to limited edition merch, that would be one thing, but to have a $400 club… seems a bit silly to me.

Could be different for gear, but unless it was Tour Issue, or Tour Preferred, what would be the point? Would it perform any differently? I doubt it.

I wear golf stuff to work. Work is a casual environment.

I buy a few shirts, pants, shoes, and maybe a pair of shorts. Stuff is starting to stack up, so it’s a good time to buy less.

Mix of brands, but I have my favorites. It really depends on the individual piece.

I won’t join a clothing club. I want to see the stuff in person before I buy. One season stuff looks cool and then the next it looks horrible IMO. So few people around me wear that stuff it all looks exclusive, so I don’t need sneak peak pre-release stuff.

No. I have to see it in person. I’d rather customize gear my own way. ie. shaft, grip.

I am interested in the idea of a club I would probably join one if it made fiscal sense

If an OEM did the same thing I might be interested in that as well

      – Not really
      – More every year it seems, love the stuff coming out and the attention fit and style is getting
      – I have some favorites (Dunning, Travis Mathew, Puma, etc), but it’s based on what they are producing, not something where I’ll buy them just because of the brand name.
      – Probably not, for a couple of reasons – 1) It’s too many shirts for one year, without letting you choose from options. If I could pick the six….maaaaybe. 2) I would have preferred it to be just a clothing club, not a “polo” club. TM makes some good pants and accessories. Six “items” instead of six “polos” might have sold me.
      – Unlikely. Equipment is too expensive (for me) to buy simply for collection purposes or because it’s “limited.”

      1. Nope… the clothes I wear on the golf course (dockers, bermudas, polo shirts, etc) can also be worn when you need something a little more formal than just a t-shirt.
      2. I do have items for each slot (headgear, belts, etc.) but I still focus on stuff that I could use off the golf course. I try to buy only once or twice per year. When items are on sale, I will go for 5 belts or 10 visors or 10 shirts at once… it’s just more convenient than shopping several times a year.
      3. Mix it up. Just like my bag, I’m not being paid to wear/play their line, so no need for loyalty there.
      4. Probably not. I’m not an exclusive-junkie. So I would actually spend the $400 buying non-exclusive gear.
      5. Nope, see #4.

      – I don’t buy “golf apparel” at all, just regular clothes from regular stores, no matter the brand.
      – Not a chance, I will never start buying overpriced clothing just for the fact that its “made for golf”, except for rain gear and shoes.
      – Never. I currently have equipment from five brands in my bag, not counting the bag itself, the umbrella and the balls which would make for another three. I basically have all of the big brands. I buy stuff that works and have the right price no matter what the brand is

I’m a big fan of most of the TM line, but paying 395 for exclusive privileges, 6 shirts, and other unspecified additional gear is pushing it. I do see the value if someone wanted 6 shirts and the excitement of other “free” stuff, but for someone who at most would only consider buying 3 golf specific shirts a year (if that) it doesn’t make much sense. I guess that means that no, I will not join the club this year, but in the future if I find the need for new shirts I will definitely consider it.

      To address the other questions:

      1. I have a set of clothes that I commonly wear while golfing, but they also serve other functions.

      3. I am only loyal if the companies products continue to fit and have aesthetic appeal.

      5. I probably would not join an exclusive manufactures club, because I play a mixed bag… But if it was a top notch putters club, I might have to join.

-I only have one thing in my golfing wardrobe and that is hats!

-I buy about 2 hats a year, and I wear my normal street clothes with that on the golf course.

-I like to mix up what I wear both on and off the golf course. Levi’s jeans, solid color t shirts (not a huge fan of Pollos), and what ever hat I feel like wearing. I like being very color coordinated. =)

-I probably wont join a specific apparel club. I’m a young guy trying to fit in with my generation.

-I would definitely pay an annual fee for limited edition clothing. Gotta represent!

1> Other than shoes, no. I wear polos and pants/shorts to work and the course. They are mostly however “golf clothing”.
2> I probably buy 10-20 shirts a year, 10 hats, 5 shorts, and 2-4 shoes. I typically look for sales and deals. I’m a bit of a shoe whore though!
3> I’m not brand “loyal” but I am brand “partial”. This is based solely on performance of the product, not the brand itself. I like Under Armor and Adidas shirts as they seem most durable and comfortable. I like Adidas shoes but I think I’m becoming a True Linkswear convert.
4> I would be unlikely to pay to join a club that allowed me to pay to wear LE gear. The only way I could see doing this would be if the cost for joining would be greatly exceeded by the discounted savings. $400/year would be a pretty tough sell for the privilege of buying shirts and shorts!
5> I’d be unlikely to join any such club unless they made the numbers work in my favor compared to what I can get shopping around.

Probably not for clubs, but this is definitely something I’d consider. Over the last couple of years I’ve developed a golf-only wardrobe, which I’m always looking to expand.

The TM offering may be too vast, as I don’t think I’ve ever bought 4 polos in a single golf season, let alone six. That said, I do know guys who change out their entire wardrobe annually, so I can definitely see where something like this could really take off. One other consideration…though he wouldn’t tell me exactly what they are, my contact at Travis Mathew tells me the extra benefits are going to “blow people away”.

When it comes to my golf clothing, yes it’s golf specific. I buy whatever looks good and makes me feel good wearing. I mainly wear Adidas clima-cool shirts and I love my Callaway Silk shorts but I have many other brands as well. I like the light wool summer pants as they breath real well, and some of the new micro fibers work well too. But when it comes to brand names, I wouldn’t say i’m loyal to one specific except maybe Adidas shirts and Kentwool socks. I like to wear all the best companies best lines of clothing. I like to buy top of the line apparel and get it at a great price. This way I feel good and so does my wallet. Now if i could join a program where the deals are as good or better then what i’m paying now then it would be a no brainer to sign up for that! As stated above by another poster, I buy high end merchandise be it equipment and or clothing, but I get it at a exceptional price or I don’t buy.

I don’t buy golf course “exclusive” attire….My casual wardrobe & my “course wear” are one & the same…That being said, I probably buy 30-35 golf shirts/year…My pants are rather bland(conservative?..lol) with the colors being blue, black & khaki & I usually wear long pants, not shorts, on the course..I choose my shirts based on appearance(colors, patterns, etc.) versus designer name so I would say that as far as brand loyalty, I’m all over the map, though most of the shirts that I buy are from the club that I play out of…To my knowledge, I own no “Limited Edition” clothing, nor would I be interested in owning any due to the limited life span(1-1 1/2 years for my shirts) of my clothing..Although I do own a few limited edition clubs, I purchased these based on #1, being able to play them & #2, I plan on keeping them until I leave this earth, so they have some intrinsic value to me…I currently have clubs from six manufacturers in my bag, so I’m not one of the blind sheep who fill a bag with a single company’s clubs…#1, to belong to a “club,” who’s only measurement for “exclusivity” is that you CHOSE to pay to join & I didn’t, is not really exclusive @ all…While I have been a member of many “clubs(organizations, groups),” both social, athletic & professional, and while dues & fees were paid to many, not one was money or the ability to pay used as the PRIMARY factor in whether or not I was to be accepted as a member…I buy clothes based on looks, and there are enough sharp looking apparel out there that I don’t believe that my appearence will suffer because I don’t belong to anyone’s “club”…I buy my clubs based on what best fits my game & not based on a certain color or design pattern(which is basically the only difference in the “limited edition” clubs vs. the regular release clubs), so I don’t believe that my game would suffer if the equipment companies went in this direction(like Cobra w/the white ZL & S3 drivers)…The bottom line is that these companies have to put as many of their clubs in as many bags as they can, so the only difference between a “Limited Edition” release vs. the general release would be cosmetic, not technological..The mark up on clothing & equipment is already frickin ridiculous, so no, I won’t be joining Travis’s club or anyone els’s club any time soon…Keep up the great work..Greens and Fairways 4ever….

As an addendum to my previous comment, I would join a “club” if I wore the clothing & by being a member I could get “EXCLUSIVE” or limited edition clothing that would not be available to the public at a discount rate that would pay for my membership within a reasonable time frame….Of the 27 shirts I’ve purchased in the past 12 months, I only paid full retail on 6, the others being purchased at “end of the year sales” & @ discount stores…Greens & Fairways 4ever….

I think that it is an interesting idea. Like a wine club, or headcover club…
It is too pricy for me these days, but having signed up for similar product promotions in the past, I think that it can be a fun promotion. I liked getting the surprise box in the mail. Perhaps a bottle of wine more than a shirt though.

The issue with the limited gear is that if you really want it, you can find it on ebay. You’ll pay a premium, but likely less than the cost of the membership. I thought about the Cameron Club for a while, but realized that I could just go to ebay if there was a cover I had to have.

I’ll open this up by answering each question you posed:

Yes, I have a golf-specific part of my wardrobe: pants and shirts that are just for golfing.
I might spend a couple hundred dollars a year on golf clothes annually. I’m pretty thrifty, though, I never buy anything at full retail.
I definitely mix it up with apparel brands, though I definitely go back to the brands that I like best (Travis, Bonobos are 1A and 1B).
I won’t be joining the Polo Club, though I think the concept of the program is pretty cool. For me, $400 is just too much, and to benefit from it I would need to buy at least 6 polos at full retail less 20%.
I definitely would not join a manufacturers program with the sole possible exception being putters. I have no interest in LE drivers, irons, or wedges. My clubs are tools, not jewels (except the flatstick!).
