{VIDEO} – Callaway Releases Rogue Pro Black Irons

As it did previously with Apex and Steelhead, Callaway has created an all-black version of its Rogue Pro Black Irons.

In this short video, MyGolfSpy Editor, Tony Covey breaks down what separates the Black version from the original (Spoiler Alert: They’re black), explains why companies release products like this, and tells you what you need to consider before buying the Black version.

Pricing and Availability

The Callaway Rogue Pro Black irons are available as a custom option only through CallawayGolf.com beginning 6/8/18.

Retail price is $825 for 5-iron through PW and $1099 for 4-Iron-AW.

I read all the comments, and am amazed at how badly the spelling is. I know that has nothing to do with golf clubs. It’s just very annoying. Since texting has come along, many people have forgotten how to spell.

I am not a fan of black irons except for some reason I like my sand wedge and Lob wedge to be black. Weird I know. I hit both the Rogue and The Black Apex. I liked the Apex better but in satin. My friend has The black Apex and looks bad after 6 months. Glad I stayed with Satin clubs. But this is another great review.

Had Cleveland irons in black 8 years ago, could not stand them after the black started wearing off….one nice thing tho was the 6 iron was worn more toward the toe while the 9 iron was almost dead center..made me aware of having the lies checked at least once a year.

The black wears off too quickly and then it looks like an eyesore every time you address your ball…no thanks! I’m with Tony on this one – if Callaway is marketing themselves as a premium brand (at a premium price) then don’t scrimp on the black finish. Do it the right way, the first time.

Why doesn’t callaway come out with a club release calander at the start of the year so people can just wait to buy the clubs they really want instead of being surprised by a new set or finish just a few months after spending 1k+ on new irons.

For the same reason why Apple, Toyota and every other manufacturer does not. NEW is the new sizzle on the steak

If black’s your thing and you don’t GAS about brand name, Maltby DBM, MMB, and PTM are really worth a look. All black forged, gorgeous, and range from $300-$500 for 4-GW. Custom built with shafts, grips, length, lie, and even loft adjustment. To add to that, the black on these is not a coating but a high-end process of chemically implanting the color into the metal.. similar to the Cobra King Pro’s. I play the DBM’s with Nippon N.S. Pro 950GH shafts and Pure pro grips. $400 cut, built, bent to my specs, and shipped.

Found maltby, golfworks products excellent way to get less expensive clubs to try, such as wanting to try a 7 wood without spending over $200…that 7 wood ($54) replaced a $200 3 iron and has been in the bag for over a year. Will say some of their products have declined the last 5 years but they still have some excellent very cost efficient very playable clubs…

I can’t say anything for their cast products, drivers, putters, etc but the forged offerings are top notch and I’d dare say would compete handily with any big name OEM. I’ll also add that I play their 3h (KE4 Tour) that I had added to the iron set for like $55 and I’m yet to find any new hybrid that is even worth considering.

Interesting, I play the same heads(TE model) and shafts and Pure DTX grips, just love them, best irons I’ve played.

These golf companies know what they have planned a year in advance, if black is going be an option give the golfer that opportunity to choose right away.

The reason why they don’t do it, this is a quick production run. If a successful amount of chrome/satin iron sets sell, the average production cost become low enough, to allow the manufacture to order a “special & often very limited run” of Black rogue. (Could be gold or any color) The production run of this iron has to be conducted in the same factory in china with the same tooling, processes and in some case the personal of the original. Putting too many eggs in one basket early season can be quite an expensive mistake having multiple models.

I had Adams CB1Blacks… but they really weren’t “black” more of a dark nickel color… I had a set of Callaway Apex Black irons that were black… after a few months they all had dime sized spots on the faces from wear… the soles lost the coating though it didn’t bother me. Probably would buy the dark nickel finish again but not the black coated finish.

If the black scratches go through to bare metal the club is soon going to look terrible. Why bother?

Farmer has chained a large tractor tire behind his tractor and is driving in circles around his barn. His Farmer neighbor pulls up to him and asks him, What size tire are you pulling?………. Get it?……. Calloway will sale a poo pot full of the new, hot off the press Black Irons and the buyer won’t be frettin about a little paint rubbing off the sole plates.

What do you mean by that? Maltby’d. I understand Maltby black clubs are not just coated black but the black is ingrained in the metal so that it doesn’t wear-off.

I mean exactly what Tony was saying. If Callaway wants to be considered to be part of the “premium” club space maybe they could use more durable finishes that cost a little more. If Maltby can do it, Callaway can do it. PVD is just cheaper.

If that’s not #truthdigest I don’t know what is.. Callaway really should be ashamed of themselves for marketing this low-quality finish on mid-top end clubs when much better options are available AND being used by companies that don’t have nearly the marketing pull that Callaway has. Unfortunately Callaway is capitalizing on consumers who just don’t know any better.. “If it’s Callaway then it must be the best that’s available, so if I want a black finished iron set then I’ll just have to deal with it wearing off and looking like $#!t in a month”.. It’s unfortunate but true.

It’s because manufacturers rarely use the black finish in their “players” irons and black has a tendency to accentuate the offset in any given club. If Callaway made these available in the X Forged or their other muscle back offering they would be absolutely filthy.

Just picked up a set of Rogue Pro’s on Friday and they look fine. Thought the finish of the backing pieces / inserts (fit behind the face, with the Callaway logo) on the test set were a little cheap looking but on my set they are black /silver (I seem to recall blue /silver, or is that just my memory ….! :) ) and the finish is much better.
Initial thought was the black irons look is really nice, but following the warning over the durability am happy to have what I have!
