I have both the Cortex and the Triton and for me the Cortex looks really good, sounds good and got great reviews. The Triton is bigger looking, loud as Hell, but if I was playing for the Farm, the Triton is my Choice, at least for me it is longer and straighter, and goes Rabbit on the ground. Just my opinion.

I’m only commenting so I can win Sam’s balls.

The only driver that really looks like it has a shot is cortex. Wilson is a bit late to the full on multi material driver scene and this is a very public entry.

      Cortex is clear choice.
I think Wilson’s golf image is on the rise.

Wilson Staff used to be a standard in golf. Many of the greatest pros used them. I would think if Wilson is serious about becoming a impact manufacturer of Golf Equipment, they would be serious about R&D and hire some respected equipment designers as opposed to running a contest to get back and become leaders of the business.

I think their best move is to release both the Roswell and the Cortex. Season 2, go with two winners. Compete with the big names that also have multiple driver releases at the same time.

Agree with your review. Thought the prior version of the Roswell looked very interesting, but the new one with the Z pattern, not so much.

And thanks for picking me out for the sleeve of balls!!!!!

As a long time golfer using Wilson equipment (irons) and have no plans on changing, it is exciting to see the effort put forward by Wilson to bring out a tour level driver.
Thank you for your unbiased review and analysis.
If Cortex is the winner and has the performance numbers to back it up, Sam will have to change his perception of a player toting a full bag of Wilson’s.

By the way, if I had to place a bet, it would be on Cortex. I actually own a Wilson Staff Triton driver (winner of the initial D vs D competition), and still play it when my M3 or G400 Max drivers misbehave. The Triton, if set-up properly, can give some long and straight drives.

I agree with your assessment. An intresting observation, the longest drives from you two came from the drivers with the lowest smash factor. Am I missing something?

I really like the way you guys showed more closeups of the drivers from the top view. Much easier to see how different the Magnus 2.0 was from this angle. I agree that it looks like the Cortex is the winner. Although several drivers had good numbers, sometimes it looked like there was more distance to be had with lower spin rates.

I like that Wilson has created buzz, but are any of these going to be enough to get me to buy one compared to what Cobra, Callaway, Ping and others have on the market today or are coming out with next year? It almost looks like they are two years behind the rest of the industry.

I really like the way you guys are showing pictures of the drivers from the top. It’s harder to tell from the show since focus of pics there tend to be on the sole side. Looks like many of the testers in this episode still had spin numbers that weren’t optimal so there appears to be more distance available.

If they ever figure out the engineering I think they’ve got something in the Launch Pad. That said Callaway’s FT-iz tour is still my bag. A couple of contenders stopped by because they were newer. 9 years old and it’s right there with latest and greatest week after week.

Please explain how the position of a hat supersedes everything else to the degree that it diminishes credibility?

In the grand scheme of things does it actually matter?

Pretty sure these guys don’t need to worry about credibility issues on their own site. This “private” recap is likely intended for us Golf Spies.. not the rest of the television audience tuning in to The Golf Channel. “Earning” our approval is really a non-issue here because their content does the talking.. not appearance. Instead of looking at them as a couple of punks with backward hats, how about changing the tune a tad? They’re just giving us their sleeves rolled up, hat turned around, down-to-business, honest scoop on their experience with W/S and DVD2. See that didn’t hurt so much did it? Lets have some fun here!

Great work gentlemen! Love the behinds the scenes recap! So true about the Magnus design/designer. For starters, I don’t believe the kid knows a lick about golf. Or at least that’s how it appears. How important is that? Tremendously important. As a consumer, I would have a very hard time buying something that I knew wasn’t designed by a golfer for golfers. Maybe this is happening more than I realize, but.. I don’t know what I don’t know, and I’m OK with that. In his case, he designed the club for other engineers and to gain more design industry recognition. He understands so little about his target market and that will be his ultimate demise.

Golfers are inherently traditionalists. While we welcome new innovation and technology, we also appreciate and respect the roots and history of the game. A marketable product must play well in both spaces to be successful. This guy just showed an ignorant disrespect for the beauty and history of the game and it was very apparent. Almost as if to imply that anybody that didn’t appreciate his driver is nothing but a moron and simpleton. I’m sure that if he heard the same critiques from 100 people, he’d still probably hold his ground on the idea that his is the best design ever to grace human existence, and he’d be certain that future space missions and cures for cancer would be inspired by his work. There are just people like this in the world and luckily I have kept my distance from them in the social arena. He’ll soon be receiving a very humble, very public kick in the jewels that may do his ego some good.

The Launchpad guy didn’t appear to be much of a golf enthusiast either but his humility was admirable. He was crushed when he got the boot but you could sense that he would use this experience to improve his understanding of the game and club design.

As for the projected favorites, the Cortex and Roswell, they’re designed by guys who are also very avid and skilled golfers. My point rests. They knew the importance of innovation coupled with tradition in the golf world. They understood their market because they are part of it.

Can’t wait to see how this all unfolds!

I’m calling it: WHEN the Magnus guy gets the pink slip next week, he’s gonna disagree and tell everyone they made a huge mistake. It would just be too fitting of his character.

I agree on Magnus, i think they would have booted him this week, but they figure his arrogant attitude is getting lots of SM traction, so they keep him around one more week, even though by design, his probably should have been the one voted out this week.

Who knows? he could even be a placed “strategic antagonist”. Someone to stir the pot and create audience chatter and adversity.. stuff that keeps people tuned in.. His design might just be a W/S concept that never made it off the ground and not even his design. We’ll probably never know. :P

Jimmy (Magnus designer) has been somewhat arrogant from the beginning of this D vs D 2 season, but he has really ratcheted up the arrogance the last couple of weeks. I agree that he will probably tell everyone how very wrong they are when he is booted from the show (hopefully next week, since I was expecting him to be ushered off the show last night).

I would also agree with their assessments of the clubs. The Launchpad and Cortex are the only ones I could see myself picking up off the shelf. And without bolting that hood onto the launchpad, I would have to hand out safety glasses to everyone else in my foursome.

Did the Triton come to market as a Non-conforming driver or did Wilson catch that problem?

Good assessment and I would agree from a marketing standpoint the Cortex looks like the winner. I favor removable weights of varying grams for adjustment verses anything that could become loose and/or move while playing. I don’t care about brand image so much as something that works, show me the numbers. I will say my original Wilson 1200 GE were really good irons back in the day, and the price was a bargain. Would i swap them out for my current I210’s no way, but that was a different era. FYI NOT trying to win Sam’s autographed balls…lol Now if Adam had signed them well maybe.
