MGS Tested: The Top 5 Mallet Putters of 2018 (Beyond the Data)

At the conclusion of every Most Wanted Test, we publish our results. We share the data we collect and rank the winners. It’s simple and straightforward, but some of you have asked for a bit more insight. We hear you.

In this video, the MyGolfSpy Staff goes beyond the data. Adam, Sam, and Harry discuss how we test putters, tackle some of the myths surrounding the importance of how a putter looks, and give you an overview of why we think the Top 5 finishers in the mallet category performed as well as they did.

What is the best ball for putting? Only putting, don’t care about all around performance. If you were to enter a putting contest which ball would you be rolling? or should be rolling!

Love your Most Wanted test results. Would you consider testing the Frankly Frog putter in your next mallet test? Frank Thomas invented the graphite shaft for golf clubs and invented a putter that he now markets.

With almost half of the top 50 players in the PGA tour using mallets, do they all have straight back straight through strokes as has been the “rule”? I would think otherwise.

What is the SG number for each putter? I was curious how those compare to the 2017 putters reviewed.

Great timing, Son recently took my cut down (belly) TM Spider and the Blade 2.0 CB just doesn’t work anymore. Did you test the TM mini spider (or no legs spider)? how did /does it match up?

I would love you to test some of the Bobby Grace models during your putter testing. Love his putters, feel and instant roll. I believe one of the best out there and would love to see how they compare in your testing. His quality is 2nd to none and I’ve been able to call him direct with questons

Do the Evnroll’s used in the most wanted test all have the counter balance grip? I got fitted for the er2 at the headquarters, and was hitting the ball crazy straight, but distance control was terrible. Did a SAM putting lab analysis with it and had unbelievably positive results, but still couldn’t get the distance control down. Took it back to EVNROLL and had them put the non counter balance version of the grip on and instantly my distance control was back. My wife is an accomplished golfer and hated it after I switched the grips. She has more of a pendulum stroke while I more push the ball based on feel. To each their own….

I have always used an 8802 style putter and currently use a Bobby Grace 6330 because I putt best with them, and putting is probably the strongest part of my game as a 1.5+ index. But we are always looking to improve right? I tried the Black TM Spyder with toe hang and could not miss at the store. I brought my putter in and compared the 2 of them on 3 different occasions and after confirming the Spyder was just a little more accurate in the 3′-8′ range I bought one. But … I was putting on a flat surface, consistent speed, no breaks.

Took it to the course and it was a disaster. Sure, flat putts in that 3′-8′ range were just as good as in the store, but distance control on longer putts or putts with a good deal of break as well as uphill and downhill putts were nowhere near as accurate for line or distance as my heel shafted putter.

Testing on flat controlled surface, just like hitting a driver over and over again on a LM, means very little compared to actually playing the equipment in a round of golf. As always I find MGS testing interesting and a good place to start if you have no idea what fits you, but the rankings mean very little to what works on an actual golf course when it really counts.

Bravo for thus comment and “good” player insight! MOI is highly overrated on 6 foot breaking putts. My test for putter usefulness is the average “chipping radius” of my short game. Usually 4 to 5 feet. I can hit straight 10 footers with a $400 Evenroll at Golfers Warehouse all day! Same with Cleveland HB 6 at 1/4 the cost. But I can make the 5 footer on the course with an old GoLo 5 which came in last! The feel of the Cameron is superior.

Amen to that. I really appreciate Mark crossfields on course reviews because of this. Always interesting to see the dry ball data and how it’s pretty much all the same within a given range but in the course is where the story really gets told.

I bought a Tommy Armour Impact Model 2 mallet early this season – prior to your testing. I made the modifications I’ve found that work for my “opposite dominant eye” condition (swap the double bent shaft for a single bend, get rid of the horizontal line alignment aids and put one “dot” on the top of the face). It really IS unbelievably good to put with on wet, slow “Spring greens” in northern NE!

I sincerely believe great putters (the man, not the machine) are born. I have observed so many golfer in my 48 years playing the game and putting is as much a talent as ball striking. The equipment can improve an already decent swing or putting stroke but cannot ever replace the innate sense that comes with being a great putter. A man’s got to know his limitations.

I have to say after I have always thought the same thing, but after this year I totally disagree with you on this. I currently play to a +2.4 USGA handicap, but according to my arccos 360 stats I putted like a 13 handicap. I have always used a Scotty Cameron blade putter (studio stainless Newport 2) and averaged 35 putts a round. I would still go out and shoot in the low 70s prettt much every time and break par maybe once or twice a season. This year I told myself that my putting had to improve if I wanted to take my game to the next level so I changed everything about what I do on the greens. I went to a TaylorMade Spider Tour red putter with no alignment line, put a SuperStroke Pistol GTR Tour grip on, stopped drawing a line on my ball and went left hand low. Since March of this year I’m down to 30.6 putts a round and have broken par in 4 of my last 5 times out and the fifth was an even par 70. A putter with tech in the face and more stability on the head along with some technique changes have made all the difference! There’s definitely something to putter technology, telling yourself otherwise means you just haven’t tried hard enough to find what helps you improve yet.

I’m glad you found the magic but I was looking at the observations over many years to where great ones emerged or rather, never ever really putted bad and if so, only for a short time. Look at Tiger, one of the best putters to ever play the PGA tour but has troubles now. My post was very generalized in that I have given lessons to many beginners or those who haven’t played long and see the “talent” in the golf swing and putting as to whether any potential exists. Again, I hope your putting continues to be great. I’m 61 and it’s the only club in my bad that can still be broken.

Come on, guys. Maybe you enjoy rambling on camera but I don’t have the time to watch a TWENTY-SIX MINUTE REVIEW. There’s Adam on a couch, flanked by Harry and Sam, who — in most of the “three shots” — look COLASSALLY bored. Look, I know MGS is a golf site but how about some minimal Production Values? Remember: longer is NOT better. This entire review should have run 10 minutes. Tops.

I never understand complaints about the length of videos. Either watch it or don’t. It was a hell of lot more informative and worthwhile than some 3 or 5 minute videos I’ve seen from some of the “Big Name” YouTube reviewers.

Great thing about YouTube, there’s this little scroll bar at the bottom that allow you to skim ahead to parts you want to see.

I think the “putter grip” has become increasingly important in the last few years with the advent of SuperStroke and the like. Have you ever had a putter the you really didn’t like, and the put a new modern grip on it and found that it performed like an entirely different putter? I would submit the argument that if all the putters in the test group all had the same grip, the results would have been entirely different.

LOL anyone who puts a StooperStroke grip on a putter they hate and instantly loves it probably is a crappy putter. I can’t stand those things. But hey different strokes right?

I’ve seen oversized /Superstroke make a big difference in play. If they weren’t effective why are so many pros using them? Do you think Jordan Speith was a crappy putter before he started using a
SS? It might not be for you but finding it helps in a game when we’re trying to shave strokes isn’t only for bad players. Reminescent of the “everyone should play blades, if you can’t then you suck anyway.”

What makes the Tommy Armour even more of a value is that Dick’s has had 20% off sales which makes it a cool $79.99. Can’t see why anyone would spend a lot for any of the other top 5 putters on you list when the TA performs just as well or better.

I really appreciate all the work you fellas do. I just purchased a used Evnroll 2 almost entirely based on the suggestions of your website and I’m really enjoying it.

I’m sure many readers, especially those of us that buy golf clubs 2nd hand, would be interested in Mygolfspy including:
      a) some sort of across-year comparison of clubs and/or
      b) an example of how just a generic, crappy putter would perform relative to these new high end putters.

I know you’ve discussed something like this in comments sections of previous articles, but I really think it would be a great addition. Even if it was something as simple as using the 2015 Ping ketsch TR (or a mid range finisher in previous tests) as a standard across each yearly comparison of clubs going forward.

Again, great job. I look forward to new MGS articles. Cheers,
      C

Great stuff. I got fitted for a putter last year and found out that every putter I owned was wrong for me. I had all toe hang putters and I am a straight back and through stroke (as opposed to an arc stroke).

I was fit with the Scotty Cameron Futura 5S. Was not a fan of the look, or the center shaft, but it is what I putted best with. After some initial struggles, I put on a Flat Cat “Solution” counter weighted grip. What a game changer for me. The counter weight feels more balanced to me and the flat side of the grip in my right palm gave me a lot of confidence. My putting has improved greatly. Still don’t like the look, but at the end of the day, I putt much better.

But one unrelated comment. What’s with the persistent every single time I come to your site offer of “notifications”.

I want emails and that’s it. I don’t want any site bombarding me.
It gets tiresome and irritating to have this pop up so repeatedly.
I strongly suggest doing away with this.

Once accidentally accepted it for a golf site and it ruined results before I got home to PVR the tv round and ever since I don’t want any site whatsoever giving notifications.

Ps I subscribe to your emails and that’s perfectly ok and wanted. My phone notifications? No

It’s strictly on my phone. Almost everyday or twice a day when I go to the site it pops up at bottom offering for me to receive notifications from mygolfspy. Some days nothing then a day later it’ll offer it again.

Litteraly jut got done watching it about five minutes ago. I really enjoyed it.

*The detailed review of each putter by Sam and Harry
*The subjective comments of the testers as well as the staff’s versus
      the performance of it.

Looking forward to hopefully seeing similar video’s on some of the other Most Wanted results. It is a great addition to the published results.
