Going Toe-To-Toe With the Young Bucks!

Wilson Golf sits in this uniquely odd position in the golf industry.  Their an old-timer from the standpoint of the brands age.  But they also have to try and keep up with all the young bucks doing their best to try and run circles around the almost 100-year old golf company.  Getting older sucks…but it is going to happen to all of us…just ask Shaq.

What Will Wilson Do?

So what do you think Wilson will do in their old-age?   Think they will stick with what got them here or do you think they will try and conform with all the new trends while re-branding themselves all over again?  Well…hard to say…but most of the companies that have completely refused to accept any of the new trends have been slowly led out to pasture and soon forgotten about. But in this case I think Wilson has a unique opportunity to capture a little bit of both worlds…which could lead to a huge strike of lighting in a bottle for the brand.  Question is do they see this and if so will they capture it in time?

Impressed With Their Most Recent Iron Releases

Time will tell but some of the most recent iron releases would have you thinking that they are moving in the right direction.  But then again some of their other product launches have me scratching my head thinking they couldn’t be farther from what I envision.  They seem to be having an identity crisis of sorts.

Eh…what the hell do I know though.

I will say this the most recent forged irons from the brand have been everything I expected and much more.  I feel if they simply continue to make clubs that the tour guys not only like but also win tournaments with…it won’t be long before they’re getting mentioned a whole lot more again.

Wilson FG Tour V2 Irons

And speaking of new forged Wilson irons…here is one of the newest models they are working on for release in the Fall.  This one is called the Wilson FG Tour V2 iron.  For more info on the irons be sure to read on below the spy images.  And be sure to let the great group of guys over at Wilson know what you think about their newest stick and some of their past designs as well.

MORE INFO (FG TOUR V2 IRONS)

  • The FG Tour V2 was designed as a follow-up to the successful FG Tour iron.  Describe it as a more modern interpretation of a classic forged iron.  Plan is to launch this iron this Fall with full availability targeted for Spring 2012.
  • The intent of this club is to provide an iron solution to the Wilson Golf, PGA Tour Staff.   Conversations with Kevin Streelman, Ricky Barnes and Padraig Harrington led to the creation of the V2 iron.
  • Testing of this iron, as seen in the photos, began around the time of “The Players” Championship in Florida.  Results were very positive with the PGA Tour players.  The culmination is that Kevin Streelman had them in play for a Top-10 Finish at the Memorial last week.
  • European Staff started formal testing last week
  • The V2 is designed to have similar performance characteristics as the FG Tour iron.  Some of the changes and updates are a softer leading edge, and an overall softer transition between the topline and the hosel.  The general comments heard are that the head appears more compact with slightly less offset, compared to its predecessor.

      I emailed Wilson’s customer service 8 days ago requesting the offset values…think they responded to me….NOPE! Want to compare the offset to 710 CB’s due to Golf Galaxy and Golfsmith not stocking these in New Jersey…so I cannot compare the 2 clubs.

      FG 62s in my back now, a throwback to the great irons of the past and very easy to hit, but seeing these V2s look so good they will be next. Maybe even a mix of V2 long and mids and FG 62 short irons. The FY birds are great but they still need to spend time making a Driver and 3 wood that can compete. When the Pro Staff players are all using Taylor Made, something is wrong.

      Fluid Feel to Gooseneck to Di7 irons. The V2 looks interesting, like the top line, but I am going agree with the satin finish fans. Where I play there is a lot of intense sunlight all year. I still play my Goose’s on occasion because they are so beautiful and I get compliments on them from people who are not familiar with them. The Deep Red 2 Distance driver I play when I leave my Burner home is still a favorite because of its accuracy and the depth of the color in it is how a driver should look. Wilson should have brought back that color as their signature Big Stick finish. I think it could be the answer to WHITE. Still having trouble finding top-end Wilson Staff items retail in Utah and Nevada. Work on distribution.

      The remind me of a modern interperation of the old Tommy Armour 845 v-25 irons that Freddy Couples hit.

      I’ve had a similar experience with the 9 degree smooth driver. Wish I had an 8 degree, but I’ve had other drivers a smidge longer but give up accuracy. I like the feel of the head in the swing. I tend to be long and occasionally wild but when I get the feel of the head in tempo, I find fairways and am still out there within a couple yards of my longest. I tend to like the deeper faced drivers (like the Pings), but I’ve come back to my Smooth for it’s accuracy. I’d like to try the DXI, yours is the first glowing report I’ve heard on the driver.
      As for the irons, I’ve had the FG’s since they came out and as I’ve said in other threads, they are as good as anything I’ve hit. Picked up the 52 and 56 degree FG wedges this spring (replaced my 54 TW9) and still getting those zero’d in with what they can do. The wet and cold spring in Chicago didn’t help but as I’ve gotten the time to gauge them, I’m finding the same confidence as I had with the 54. The 56 I’ve used within 50 yds and can stop it. The 52 up to about 110 and I can place it. The only limitation is the operator.
      I agree with posters that say that golf tech has gotten to the point where most, if not all the top makers clubs are similar enough that a good player can play effectively get used to, and be effective with most of the clubs. I just happen to like the looks and feel of the Wilson’s and they’re at a price I can justify. From there, it’s a matter of finding the right ball for the players swing.

      These look no more like another brand than another brand looks like them,they ALL look like something else. I do agree that a satin finish would be a little more attractive in the long run. Although a buddy of mine has had a set of FG tours since they came out and they still look beautiful with only minor dings that any other iron would accumalate. I would like to address the lack of quality woods everyone seems to want to yack about. I have had the Smooth driver in my bag for almost 2 years now and its a great driver,its not as long as some of the others (only talking a few yards here) but much more forgiving and it goes as straight as a arrow. I went and got fitted for a R9 about 4 months ago and had it in my bag for 3 months,giving it every oppurtunity to knock the smooth out but it just didnt do it. The R9 never felt nowhere near as good as the smooth and while it was a few yards longer it didnt go as straight and it wasnt as forgiving so now it sits in my basement and the smooth is back in my bag. The new line of DXI drivers and fairways are the real deal and getting great reviews,i have hit the DXI driver,fairways and hybrids about 6 different times now and they can hang with ANY companies driver,fairways and hybrids. Wilson Staff is back and making quality equipment as good and even better than the competition at a much more affordable price point. I will always support W/S and continue taking money from players using what they think is better. Oh did i mention my W/S staff bag is ALL W/S,
      driver = 9* smooth
      hybrids = 19.5* and 24* fybrids
      irons = Ci9 5-pw
      wedges = TW9 50*,56* and 60*
      putter = The Wilson 8802 backup W/S 8883

      They certainly do have a good looking top line, and I too am a sucker for a good looking chrome finish. Black finishes tend to not hold up that well, and badges tend to look better against a chrome background. I really think these remind me more of Raven/ Kenneth Smiths rather than a Ping or Adams club.I’d love to get back into the 70’s so that I could justify purchasing a set..

      Hey Bernie, get the FG’s and you WILL get back into the 70’s.. Accurate an iron as I’ve ever hit and a good amount of forgiveness. Got to a mid single digit last summer with them and if I can wake up my Odyssey, I will be back there again this year…

      I understand the desire by some for black or satin finishes (I LOVE the look of my FG Tour Wedges), but my chrome FG Tour irons in sunlight are absolutely gorgeous. I don’t slam my clubs into my bag haphazardly, so the finish is still like new 40 rounds in…and others always comment on their good looks. I like the V2 top line and the update of the FG.

      Don’t know anything about these irons, but I’ve been playing the Staff FG 25 ball for the past year and it is GREAT!!!! One of the softest covers I ever felt and it goes as far as the ProV’s I used to play. All for about $10.00 less than the other premium balls. Give them a try guys, I think you’ll love them. I get mine on EBAY and the last time I bought them I got 4 boxes for $70.00 WITH SHIPPING!!

      Thank you so much for giving Wilson Staff the type of coverage that they so richly deserve. These irons are drop dead gorgeous in my opinion. Ever since my heart attack 3 years ago, I switched to the somewhat clunky looking Di9’s, and have never looked back. As I went through therapy and had to learn all over again how to break 100, then 90, and now making another run back for the upper 70’s, the Di9’s have been with me all the way.. If and when I ever do get back to the 70’s I will switch to an offering like these from the same company that saved my golf game. Then and only then will anyone ever pry the Di 9’s from my hands. (P.S.–it’s going to take a bullet–not a crowbar.)
      Another unsung hero of theirs is The FG Tour Ball. I built a huge backlog of the old 3 piece version of the Bridgestone B330S, before they changed it to a 4-piece ball and tried jamming the B-330 RX and RXS models down our collective throat. I’ve gamed this ball several times, and it is as long as the Bridgestone, as spinny as the ubiquitous Pro V1, and as boring in flight as The TaylorMade Penta. No question products like these put Wilson up at the top of the pack, or at least able to run with anybody.
      Their Fybrids also run with anyone’s hybrids, but I fully agree with the comment that their woods need just a touch of distance tweaking. They are just about their, but a shade more feel and a tad more distance, and my bag would be in danger of becoming 100% Wilson Staff. Another area where they definitely need a little help is their line of putters. The latest 8802’s etc., are very nice, but just can’t quite run with Odyssey, much less Scotty Cameron.
      The Vizor is a neat concept for high-cappers as far as putters go, but even a weird guy like me who embraces Fat-Shaft Technology, and other Wilson Staff idiosyncrasies, can’t bring himself to endorse it for anyone shooting in the mid-80’s or lower. It’s just seems too clunky for me.
      I have really enjoyed all you have done to help raise the awareness of Wilson Staff products. I really think Wilson Staff is, quite possibly, the absolute best bang for the buck in the industry. Seriously–brand new sets of Di9’s are being offered for as little as $225 from many vendors. Though the Di11 is actually a slightly better club, it’s hard to pass up the Di9’s at these closeout prices. Thanks for offering me this soapbox!

      Wilson, now we are talking. I’m a bit older and grew up on your clubs. #1 change is to make a Satin version, ditch the chrome as the lead design. Other than that full steam ahead.

      Much of a muchness to me. package them up all you like ity is at the end of the day a cavity back iron like many others. Technology does not move on that fast these days and what is, was, perhaps many years ago. You buy what you like. I bought Ben Hogan golden anniversary irons (blades) because I like them. I also bought at a flea market a set of W/S Fluid feel blades for £3. yep thats right, 3 to PW. and nice they are too.. You pays yer money!!!!

      I agree with this. I am a big fan of Wilson and own some of their famous Staff line from years past. I have also owned some of the more recent models and while the highly polished chrome looks great when new, the finish scratches up very quickly. Now I know they are tools, and not jewelry, but when they scratch and mark so easily it makes them look cheap and nasty like a cheaper Chinese made cast head. A tour type satin finish I am sure would be prefered by many players; especially better players who are likely to play this particular model.

      Agree completely, their irons are some of the best in the world, their hybrids are fantastic but as regards putters and, more importantly, woods, they’ve no monopoly. Great to see them coming back but they need to take a leaf out of taylormade’s book and sell those sort of drivers more cheaply :D:D
