SPOTTED! – 2012 Callaway Golf Pics

Ok…quick game.  What’s the first words you think about when you hear the company name:  Callaway Golf?

GO!!!

I Hear People Saying Things Like…

Well nowadays when I ask that question…I hear people saying things like: Struggling, searching for their identity, outspent by competition, huge losses, new CEO, re-building process and lack of innovation. Hard to believe but it wasn’t that long ago that they were the leaders in the industry and those words to describe the company would not have been further from the truth.

“The First Step To Recovery Is…..”

But…how does the saying go….”The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.”  I think Callaway finally realized they have a serious problem on their hands.  And I have a feeling that their new plan of action will lead to a promising turnaround in the years to come.  Now do I think they will make a full recovery in 2012…absolutely not.  But I do expect and hope that this was enough of a wake-up call for them to get back in the game.

Callaway 2012 Releases!

But enough about the stock price…what about their new gear?  Well it’s too early to tell what the change at CEO will bring in regards to the designs…but trust me a successful product line is not the only part in becoming the leader of the golf equipment industry.  Just ask the now leader Taylormade.  Callaway already had their best performing product line ever the last couple years…so I expect the 2012 releases to perform just as well.  But we will be reviewing them to be sure.

Here is a list of their new releases for 2012:

  • Callaway Razr X Black Driver
  • Callaway Razr FIT Driver
  • Callaway Raxr XF Irons
  • Callaway Raxr XL Irons
  • Callaway Raxz X Black Irons
  • Callaway Forged Chev Wedges
  • Callaway Razr FIT FW
  • Callaway Razr X FW

Tell Us What You Think!

So…what do ya think?  What is your favorite club of their new releases?  What do you think about Callaway going with an adjustable driver in the Razr FIT?  Let us & Callaway know what you think.  And yes they will be reading this today.  How do we know…trust us we just know.  So have your voice be heard!

Just an opinion to the CEO.
Callaway was and should be a leader in driving the consumer to retail for products. The irons are actually…hard to look at!. The branding, logos, product names are disjointed to the point of distraction. Ely C had a vision, and the company has to get the fundmentals of who they are back in play with consumers that connect to the products as…must have. That was the magic of what Callaway was…but it can be done again, as they have a ton of intellectual capital stored up over time in the minds of the consumer. A good example can be seen in Ashworth Golf Shoes. I never would have thought of wearing anything bug FJ’s, maybe ECCO, but when I saw those shoes…they made me want to buy a pair. That is what Callaway is missing.

I have held all these products, I think it is funny that alot of the bloggers are saying the drivers are garrish, space ships, exct. The Razor fit looks like a driver should, traditional and clean, no white paint, green lines or useless sole plates. I agree the old equipment was unapealing, but the new line of woods is very clean and traditional.

I have the diablo edge irons. That I just recently purchased. The looks put me back for a while. I have to say, they are great to play with. Better than other offerings I’ve played from other companies. I have all TM woods , which I like a lot. Customer service @ Callaway, first class. I bumped into a Callaway rep on the course. Gave me a sleeve of their balls. I will consider the new wood offerings. As well as the wedges. Currently, Vokey’s. I like the performance.

I think the current Callaway product line is better than the 2012 line up with the exception of the Razr Fit product…..too bad they were a little late to the party on that one. Better late than never I guess. Not quite sure why they would release a set of irons that retail for over $1,000 a couple years after they did away with FT iron designs based off their research that people are not spending that kind of money on irons anymore unless they are a sweet forged set.

Callaway. I always think good golf gear, I have tried heaps of clubs that claim all sorts of things, like all companies do :- Hit further / larger sweet spot / more forgiving & so on,but I keep going back to my Callaway Edge Driver & Razr irons in my opinion for what it may be worth ! There are clubs just as good but none that stand out as better.

I like the look of that Black driver. The adjustable one doesn’t look so great. I am playing Callaway X Prototypes with KBS Tour shafts. I absolutely love them. For a blade, I think they are forgiving. If you miss hit toward the toe, the ball still goes in the right direction. You just lose some distance. I can live with that. Those new examples are absolutely hideous. That black triangle shaped thing is horrible. The other one is a slight change on those Diablo things which always looked cheesy and gimmicky. You couldn’t pay me to give up my X Protos for either of those. I think I’ll be looking for another set of Protos on ebay before they get too hard to find.

Wow… The new Callie Drivers and hybrid look fantastic and confidence inspiring to me, and the ability to swap out shafts easily and adjust lie & loft are a plus in the driver marketplace competition. However, to a mid-handicapper who is accustomed to looking down at a player’s cavity back, a la r7 TP’s, the new iron’s look at first blush, seems just a wee bit too biased towards techno flash with no apparent purpose. Not quite ugly, but definitely not beautiful to my eyes. That being said, I would still like to give ’em a demo whirl for curiosity’s sake!

Looks like more of the same: trying to sell the bottom of the driver and the back of the irons)colours and graphics) As for an adjustable driver: to little to late. Look at Pings driver(no adjustment) set up is good, looks like a golf club should and performs at the top of the class

Thank the good Lord I sent my Diablo Forged Irons back to Callaway to have the Loft & Lie corrected, after finding out they were discontinuing the best forgiving forged cavity backs produced. I was waiting to see what the new line of irons looked like before I decided to go to the new Titleist 712 AP2’s. At least I will have a set of irons that have been refined over the years with serial numbers on each iron from Titleist. Callaway is going the way of Taylormade, making new products as often as they can, therefore their products have a High pricetag but a LOW resale value.

The biggest problem that I have been having with most irons these days is the topline of the iron. I have a set of Nike VR forged MB and blades which have the thinnest topline in the industry, I am a fan of Callaway but every time I demo irons the clubhead feels huge and clunky to include the player irons. Honestly I havent found a iron that has had the same look and feel as my VRs. I wish that Callaway would come out with an iron with a thinner topline and be able to mix a set of Cavity backs, Muscle backs, and blades but I am not aware of any such mix being offered by Callaway. The drivers look great, not so sure about the look of the razr fit though but it is hard to tell what a club looks like until you have it down in front of you addressing a ball. I have a lot of hope for Callaway and maybe they can put as much time in to the pshycological part of thier design as they do the technilogical side. That is what put Taylormade at the top.

Razr Fit driver looks good but the competition has been out there for the past couple of years with this technology. As for the loft specs on the irons ‘LoL’ . The 5 iron is now as or if not stronger than a traditional 4 and please don’t forget with the modern ball the majority of golfer cannot consistently get air born a club with 21 degrees of loft (the new 4 iron). The Razr XF iron does however give the opportunity to balance your irons with 4 degree gaps from the 5 – G or what would have been 4 – P. Thus you can get a balanced bag up to a 60 degree lob wedge if you wish only now 5 of your clubs declare themselves to be wedges. – comical really.

Love the look of the Razr X Black driver very traditional looking, the rest of the lot not so much.
The Xl irons look like cheap knock offs of a Callaway iron. I think Callaway has to go back to basics and stop trying for that edgy look. I personally don’t like red on golf clubs it makes them look cheap.

Looks like Callaway is still going in the wrong cirection. They have really lost their way! I can remember a few years back when 90% of the members at my club were playing Callaway, now it is all PING, TM, and Adams. I personally went from a All Callaway bag to now a ALL PING bag. Eli must be turning over in his grave to see what has happened to his company!!

It’s official, the nice, clean, sexy looking irons and metal woods from Callaway are a thing of the past. It seems that they’ve officially made the move to see how many fins, gadgets & doodads they can attach to every club in an attempt to make it different from the last model they released the previous month. Sure, if they perform well then does it matter what they look like. You bet it matters. I’m not even going to demo an iron that first doesn’t appeal to my eye. The best looking club Callaway ever made, in my opinion, is the X prototype irons. Even the 09 X forged were easy on the eye, and a great playing iron. I’m starting to not be a fan of Callaway designers any longer.

The Fit and Black drivers look great and will one or both be in the bag next season.

Not as impressed however with the irons, hate to say. The XF are geared obviously towards people who prefer larger irons, almost hybrid irons if you will (that’s just not me, but certainly there are people who like those a lot).

The RAZR X Black irons seem to be a middle ground iron between the RAZR X and RAZR X Tour. The RXB have the same strong lofts and more upright lie specs as the RAZR X, but slightly less offset. They also appear to have the same sole width and top line as the RAZR X.

I was hoping to see a new iron that would be a Diablo Forged iron replacement. Rebadged even and brought into the RAZR family if the Diablo name was going to be scratched, but definitely bring this iron back, with some tweaks of some kind. Was bummed to not see that.

A 2012 Diablo Forged iron version would have been a certain buy. As it is the XF just don’t appeal to my eye in terms of iron shape preference. And while the RXB do a bit more (at least in the sense they’re more compact looking, taller face, and not as long heel to toe as the XF), those too are not certain buys at this point. Maybe when I see them in person.

Callaway should release the new 2012 Callaway Japan Legacy Black irons in the U.S. Those I’d buy in a New York minute. As would many, many others based on the great reviews the Diablo Forged irons received. Honestly I’m really surprised the Diablo Forged irons line was ignored (but hopefully not killed off; one can still hope for a 2013 – gosh that’s a LONG TIME – release).

Initial grades in terms of pre release interest level:
      Drivers A
      Woods A
      Wedges B+
      Irons C
      Putters A

I’m playing a complete Callaway bag right now (RAZR Driver, FTiZ Woods, X Proto Irons, JAWS wedges, Odyssey Putter) and I am lost for words. Seriously what is Callaway thinking? This stuff is garish. I was going to say the RAZR Black Driver looked good until I saw the star/X pattern on the club face! How can a company loose the plot like this? I’m guessing neon glow in the dark shafts and grips are going to be on the options list along with these offerings.

Is there some logic or market feedback behind this? This is a new low as far as I am concerned … *sigh* Thank God Odyssey has maintained some sanity with their product. Callaway staffers reading this … be concerned. I am a Callaway fan and I can’t stand the sight of these clubs (let alone play them).

As a Callaway Staffer I am very excited for the next year’s line and yet a little disappointed with the response from a “fan” of Callaway. The obvious question here is…how often are you looking at the design on your clubface while playing????? The design is never noticable at address and never affects playability! Too many consumers are wrapped up in the things that make the least amount of sense when it comes to a club (white paint!) rather than look at performance! Great job Callaway! Keep it up!

Nothing to do with this years Callaway releases but simply a response to your comment.

While I will 100% agree with you in regards to looks vs. performance. I have to also say that looks play a major role in what golfers purchase. This is a simple fact in the industry.

So why not make a club that not only performs but also looks good as well?

      Brett Hahn

Yes I agree with looks playing a major role in a purchase. The main thing I was trying to say is that looks shouldn’t be the only reason a consumer chooses one company’s product over anothers.

      Nick

Brett, I am a Callaway fan. That’s the reason for the strong reaction. Performance is one thing. Looks reflect things like taste and appreciation for the good things in life. My bag reflects a little bit of my personality. I just do not see myself playing these clubs.

I’m really digging the Razr fit. While pictures can deceiving it looks like it has a touch of a deep face and I do really like the dual weight ports. I’m hoping they make those inter-changable as well and allow customers to get their hands on them. It will also be interesting to see how their adjustment options work vs others. I also dearly hope that with the new adjustability comes with it the ease of changing the shaft. I understand that the majority of golfers need something softer but I also know that a lot of the die hards are going to want their shaft of choice in there. It doesn’t have to be like the imix system where someone could have just wandered in to a Dick’s and bought an Xcon off the rack and popped it up. Something as ease as a selection on their webstore or preowned webstore with shafts that has their tip on it (assuming there is one) all ready to go. It’s a nice thought anyways.

As to the irons, the XF’s look neat, very darth vadery. I’m curious to see how they feel with a forged head and a cast face.
The Razr X HL’s don’t get it done for me though. I don’t like the liberal application of red everywhere when though I know it’s one of Callaway’s go to colours.
I am glad that they aren’t running with both the Diablo and Razr line. I get that others do that to differentiate between the “players” and “GI” but it seems to do little but confuse people.

I also like the looks of the New Razor X driver, I will have to see the performance results. Bu the way it looks I might be making a change from Taylor to Callaway if the price is decent and they perform. I hope they do a test market like Cleveland and Taylormade :):):)

Maybe they should stand strong on “loft creep” and keep iron sets as they used to be – Pw 48 degrees – this just flows into a 3 wedge set better, 52 , 56 and 60 . Maybe this could
Make them more of a players company rather than a game improvement company. Let the others keep on changing there’s where will it end a need for 5 wedges ??? Come on callaway lead the way and stay strong – distance quotes are for dummy’s !!!

Having played an all Callaway bag all last season, I am definitely looking forward to these releases.

These irons are more in the GI and SGi category and may not suit the eye of the better players. I really want to see the Razr X black irons. Sounds like they may be the next set for me as I improve.

I will stick with my Razr Hawk until the 2nd or 3rd generation fit comes out.

If it is anything like TM drivers, it will take a few generations and updates to really nail it. Meanwhile the driver’s performance itself will be no different as the face cannot be any hotter than it is.

Hoping these might help them bounce back from their woes. They offer some of the best clubs out there, but for some reason I guess Taylormade’s staffers on tour everywhere make it seem like the best drivers.

I tried R11 with RIP Alpha vs RAZR Hawk Tour with RIP Alpha. No comparison. I preferred the Cally. But, I like that the R11 allows for shaft swapping without glue. Razr Fit seems like the answer to this dilemma, but will the head perform as well? Seeing as the FT9 was a step back from FT5 IMO, I won’t give in until I hit it and test it.

The Razr BLack is a very good looking driver, but the fit is absolutely hideous. The Hybrids is fine, very traditional, but the irons are way over the top and I wouldn’t even bother demoing them since they really seem to be doing their best to bring the ugliest club to the market (so long Cleveland VAS! someone is on the way to dethrone you!). They look bulky clunky and Walmart finished. After the X-Forged, everything has gone down hill with design. Maybe the market and customer force is in a different section these days?
