2017 Cart Bag Buyer’s Guide
The process of buying anything in today’s time has become stressful and time consuming. We want to help solve that problem for you. The MyGolfSpy mission is simple: create the world’s most objective and comprehensive testing in the industry. We feel the best reviews are those that help you make the right choices and help you get the most out of your time and money.
One key to our testing protocols is testing products head-to-head. We select the top products from each category and put the products through detailed head-to-head testing. We test both in the lab and in the field. We score each product across a range of weighted categories. We then rank the products and explain why, and give awards to the best performing products in the category.
This year we approached Cart Bag testing with more critical scoring and improved protocols. This was based on an intensive look at the market and feedback from consumers just like you. Several key findings from that research influenced the bag testing process for 2017.
Everything from organization of dividers, efficiency of zippers, rigidity of bag, design of pockets, and the installation of divider linings were – among many other things – considered.
The Metrics
We’re always fine-tuning the process to make sure we’re collecting the best data possible. Continuing that trend we’ve updated and refined this year’s analysis to bring you the best buying advice possible.

We put in hours of testing utilizing data-driven protocols to test new metrics. The numbers are better than ever.
Over the course of the test, bags were loaded with 14 clubs, and a dozen golf balls. Our panel of testers was encouraged to load and unload clubs from the bag as they would during a typical round of golf.
While some golfers do use cart bags on push carts, our tests focused on usability while attached to a driving cart.
Top performing bags feature storage that is designed and built in a way that allows for the full utilization of the space. On the other hand, in some of the poorer performing bags, while the potential for greater functionality exists, stitching inhibited the use of the storage. The highest performing bags within this category, feature pockets that are accessible and easy to use when the bag is mounted on a cart.
Style (10 points) – Score is established by considering what we believe the majority of consumers would deem stylish, not whether the individual tester likes the look of the bag. Survey questions provided to testers were developed to combat any brand-driven favoritism on the part of the individual respondent.
Weight (10 points) – All bags are ranked based on weight, and then assigned relative scores. For example, the lightest bag in the test received 10 points, second lightest received 9.5 points, and so on. The heaviest bag received 2 points.
Features (55 points) – This is the category where the best bags separate themselves from the pack. It’s what you should consider first when purchasing a new cart bag. Score was determined by a compilation of the sub-categories below:
Strap Pass Through – Based on the strap’s on-course functionality. A design flaw found in some bags, pockets become inaccessible when the pass-through is used on cart.
Velcro Pad- Score is based on both the size and functionality of the pad. Many bags have pads that are far too small, while others have pads that are almost completely unusable. While a velcro pad may not be a priority for all golfers, a good cart bag should include a functional offering for those who want it.
Pockets – Score is based on whether a bag has or does not have certain pockets outlined in our predetermined checklist (including rangefinder pocket, insulated pockets, storage pockets, ball pockets etc). Interesting pockets outside of our list are always noted and investigated thoroughly. Pockets are tested head to head which results in some pockets – PING’s one finger magnetic rangefinder pouch for example – becoming the benchmarks by which similar pockets are scored.
Dividers- Combines the design, build, and overall functionality of the dividers to establish a score. While the tendency for the clubs to grab was considered, it was not the sole consideration. We also noted the arrangement of the dividers and whether or not the design inherently aided in club organization.
Putter Well- Based on design and functionality. We focused on binding problems (specifically with bigger grips), the placement of the well (important to organization), and the materials used to build the well. The well was tested with a full bag to reflect how the clubs would be arranged relative to the putter.
Final grades were awarded based on total scores. Best Overall is our highest overall scoring bag, and awards are awarded to the top five cart bags. In addition, more specific Best in Class recognitions are awarded to bags in certain categories (like storage, lightweight, etc) that push the industry ‘envelope.’

3 years agoHave you done a review of golf push carts? … I’m in the market for one. Thanks and good job with all your other reviews.

4 years agoI know I am late in the game on this bag review. I have a question? How do these bags do with bigger grips like the Winn Oversize wraps? I have a C-130 and the grips tend to run into each other inside.
Juan
4 years agoHi, love your website and reviews.
Any reason you did not include the Clicgear cart bag on this particular one…. makes sense, since you have so great reviews of their push carts!
Thanks!!!
Kelly Arnold
4 years agoI agree why doesn’t Bennington submit a Quiet Organizer bag – the only improvement for Bennington is put a drain tube in the cooler pouch – with one quick glance you know all your clubs are in a Bennington bag – no lost clubs here
Tispy
4 years agoThe Club Glove is an awesome bag. It is an old school heavier staff style bag. If You have a push cart or are strapping it to an electric cart i’m not sure why bag weight enters the picture, if you are never carrying it. i only remove it from trunk to bag drop. Then attach it to my cart. It’s incredibly well made and indestructible, also very good looking. That being said i like Ping and Sun Mountain products and they place premium on light weight. I also keep a sun mtn. h2no tripod bag in my trunk for the courses i carry my bag at. On the big club glove bag i attached a caddyrack pro for the irons to quell all bag chatter.

4 years agoJust now getting a chance to read this. Really thorough (as usual) job on all the rankings. Not surprised by the PING DLX, I saw a friends and it is a fantastic looking and practical bag.
JLIII
4 years agoDoes the Ping DLX have full-length dividers now for all 15 club slots? I looked at the DLX a couple years ago, and while it had the 15-divider top, there were only 4 or 5 full-length dividers. It would be great if they made the switch to full-length dividers for every club slot… the bag was fantastic in nearly every other way.

4 years agoI Purchased the C 130 about 3 months ago and Love it. My local golf shop/ super store said the Sun Mountain Bags had incredible durability. The bag will also stand by itself in a strong wind . No “issues” with this bag at all.
P.J.
4 years agoI couldn’t agree more – the Ping Pioneer II is the best bag available! Hands down….
I don’t carry a single Ping club in my bag, but I use their bag. One thing you left out was the key-ring, just inside the right side interior, side storage pocket. I LOVE this feature, in fact – I used to have a TaylorMade bag for that very reason – until they removed it.
Bag manufacturers, here’s what we want/need:
1) 14 individual club dividers, all the way down
2) Valuables, velour lined pocket
3) Magnet, easy to open place for our range finder
4) Key clip inside the bag
5) Velcro attachment for gloves
6) Bag stands upright when it’s got all your clubs in it (doesn’t tip in the parking lot)
7) All the standard stuff, place for cold drinks, towel holder, umbrellas holder, etc
BR
4 years agoNice review as always with loads of relevant information. Couple of thoughts… Wonder why the 1. Ogio Silencer golf bag or a Bennington Bag would not participate? I think the manufacturers finally realize weight and club organization (less rattling) are important and should be standards in all bags.
Joro
4 years agoThe Sun Mountain is a great bag with lots of pockets for you krap, The only thing missing is a pocket for a bottle. The Stand version is a bit smaller and does have the pocket. I have both and love em.
Deserttaxguy
4 years agoI don’t get that new bags typically have the high side of the collar on the same side as the bag grip. My Hotz Bob Hope bag is what you want. Front face out, ball and glove pocket accessible, and the whole front storage for beers, balls, clothes, very easy from either side. The traditional two pouches on the grip/strap side were for ease of use when carried! Because you laid the bag down on its front when you carried.
Jesse
4 years agoDoesn’t the cart strap for the PING pioneer and the DLX go under the side pockets so you still have full access???
Larry Doane
4 years agoBest cart bag to eliminate dings on forged irons is the Kahma C5. It has the Caddyrack iron holder built-in and 2 external club tubes in the front.
werekong
4 years agoI owned the Caddyrack when it could be fit into almost any bag. It was ok but irons tended to fall out of their holders i.e. when bag was in horizontal position i.e. car trunk. The Ogio Silencer eliminates that problem, and also secures the driver, hybrids, and metal woods as well as irons. Added advantage: don’t have to worry about losing head covers since you don’t need them during a round.
Wayne
4 years agoNo Bagboy, they are amazing for carts. I am not sure why weight is such an issue, when you aren’t carrying the bag.
MyGolfSpy
4 years agoLook one more time, BagBoy was in our test.
Joe Lambert
4 years agoI agree 110% with this survery..I think the Ping bags are the best…I just bought the DLX and I wish I would have got the Pioneer. Funny how the Pioneer beat the DLX…Another thing I like is that the Ping bags will stand up by themselves. My Sun Mountain would fall over all the time!
TPCJake
4 years agoI know this test was for golf cart bags, but do you have an unofficial Push Cart ranking?
Jonathan
4 years agoPlease please please include how many cans can fit in the cooler pockets!
LAbillyboy
4 years agoAMEN! The ONLY criteria I judge a riding bag by.
Jim Nalep
4 years agoI have the C130 and it is all the bag I need. Very durable too !
Keith Martin
4 years agoNo Titleist…see lot of these bags on the backs of carts?
werekong
4 years agoI have the Ogio Silencer golf bag……best bag I’ve owned. It “locks” each club in its pocket so they don’t hit each other or rattle around. Even so, the clubs are easily accessible. To top it off, it’s very light (~5 lbs)
Hoofer4
4 years agoExtra pockets? Cooler pockets? Wtf are you doing playing golf or having a picnic? All of these unnecessary items are what’s slowing down the game. Just play.
Gary
4 years agoNo it’s not a picnic but the only thing you need to do at the turn is a pit stop. Then it keeps the flow of game consistently moving
Johnny Choy
4 years agoBuying things today is very confusing indeed. I spent 15 min wondering which brand of toilet paper should I buy.
Alex Kalionzes
4 years agoDid Callaway bow out of putting the Org 15 and 14 up for the analysis, or did they not score well enough to make it into consideration? I’m hunting a new bag (my 9 year old Ogio is wearing through in spaces) and am just curious.
Thanks guys and keep up the amazing work!
Pete
4 years agoBennington bags not even mentioned. I’ve owned 2 and love them!
Warren Saunders
4 years agoI own a Pioneer and it has Mizuno clubs…lol. I bought it for the beer capacity. Are there any bags that can hold more than 8 beers? I drink Guinness and can only fit 5 large cans with ice.
MyGolf Spy
4 years agoYes the BagBoy Chiller.
Jeff Bahry
4 years agoHow many 12oz beers can the Chiller hold?
MyGolf Spy
4 years agoTheir cooler inside the bag (unique to them) holds 6 but you could put more in the additional pockets for sure.
Daniel Bratlie
4 years agoDo any bags have the putter well off to the side anymore?? My 33″ putters do not fit the new style of putter wells integrated into the top, it messes the headcover all up!!! I am still rocking my Ping cart bag from like 5 years ago due to this.
Rich
4 years agoI love an external putter well myself. Check out the Projekt Sengara. It’s the only one I could find that worked. It’s narrow though, so anything bigger than a midsize grip won’t work, and the diameter of the cap of the well is more narrow than the rest of the tube, so a grip that tapers to the shaft works a lot better than a superstroke.

4 years agoNo Callaway bags??

4 years agoLove my Sun Mountain C130. The insulated cooler pocket is the difference-maker.
Al Renner
4 years agoAgreed. C130 is an amazing bag.
MyGolf Spy
4 years agoThe C130 ranked well in our test, although regarding insulated pockets, almost every bag tested had that as a feature of their bag.
