MyGolfSpy…Dedicated To The Consumer

2009 was a massive year for MyGolfSpy.  And I am honestly proud of it’s growth…but it does not surprise me…and that is because there was a need that was met.  Which generally leads to growth like MGS has seen.  This need being met I am speaking of are the need for websites like MGS and others dedicated solely to the consumer and not ones driven by the major manufacturers ad revenue…which always leads to a shift in control of the content you are allowed to post because of the power they have over the media outlets…money is a powerful thing.  They want total control of every piece of content that is published about their company if they are paying your bills.  And while I do understand it from their perspective…it is not best for the consumer and it is not what MyGolfSpy is or will ever be about.  And this need is true for all industries…consumers are tired of being fed one marketing pitch after another about products that are rarely improvements over their predecessors. And yes we do have sponsors on MyGolfSpy as well…and you will see us highlight products on MyGolfSpy from time to time but these are for companies and products we truly believe in and we feel are doing something worth highlighting. Our main focus will always be on smaller companies putting out great product that also and just as importantly put the customer first.  Believe me we have been approached by almost every major golf manufacturer in one way or another about them wanting to have some kind of presence on MyGolfSpy although after explaining our philosophy of being 100% unbiased in our opinions about their products to our readers they seem to lose interest fairly quickly.

A PRIME EXAMPLE OF BIG BUSINESS INFLUENCE & POWER

An email came in today from a fellow writer at another major online golf media outlet that many of you have probably visited which might explain a little bit better about what I am talking about and show you how this industry really works. It might shock you!  I will not use his name or the company he was speaking about because I told him I would not.

This friend that was a writer for a major online golf media outlet which was writing about a major golf company who was a key advertiser on their site.  Basically he said he felt like a sellout all the time..he was always writing stuff about their equipment to keep them happy and keep them as an advertiser…even though he thought their product was not at all worthy of his praise (this happens in almost every major golf publication).  Well…one day he went on to a popular golf forum that he was a member of which was separate from his online golf media outlet and posted his actual feelings about the product.  Well the next day he received a violently angry email from a representative from the major golf company telling him NEVER to do anything like that again.  And this is the kicker…they then told him to always remember…THEY HAVE PEOPLE WATCHING EVERYWHERE!

Or just the other day I was talking to a high up at another golf company…and he was telling me about his unhappiness with treatment their MAJOR golf company got for the millions of dollars they spent on ads in Golf Digest which also included the “Hot List” Edition.  He had received a proof for the article they had written about their product that was to be published in the “Hot List” article and let’s just say it was not to his liking.  Well they called the writer and said if he didn’t make some drastic changes to his opinion and their placing in the list that they would pull all the ad spending from their publication.  And guess what….he made the changes.

* (THIS IS JUST ONE PERSONS OPINION AND NOT STATED AS A FACT – GOLF DIGEST CONTACTED US AND DISAGREED WITH THIS ABOVE OPINION FROM OUR EXTREMELY RELIABLE SOURCE)

Hopefully Just The Beginning at MGS

Listen…commercials and advertisements now take up more time of our day then ever before…and people are getting fed up with it.  And the majority of these high dollar ads are being done by just a handful of companies which consume smaller companies that are typically the actual technology pioneers in their fields and also the ones more devoted to the consumers happiness and satisfaction.  The bottomline is the ONLY thing big business concerns itself with. And there buying power and influences in their respective industries allow them to get away with this and still prosper in the process.  This is why we often find ourselves dealing with being put on hold for hours or being transferred from one rep to another to deal with something as small as a return or a phone bill and in the meantime getting nothing resolved or finding ourselves listening to a dial tone on the other end because they accidentally hung up on us.  They are basically saying to you, “What are you going do about it?  You have no other choice but to deal with it because we are the only ones left to deal with.”

And the same is happening in the golf industry…and that is why I started MyGolfSpy.  I wanted to have a golf site 100% dedicated to the consumer.  My goal is a lofty one and one that might never be reached but it is my passion and I am dedicated to it for the rest of my career.  That goal is to change the way an entire industry works when it comes to how golf equipment is perceived by the consumer in the media. Like I said I am proud of our growth but I feel like I have just begun my body of work for my career and there is lots more to do before I will even be slightly content.  I have reached many of my goals for 2009 with MGS but I hope this is just the beginning for where it and all the other sites I have planned will go.  This is something that has never been done successfully in the industry but I feel the time is right and I hope you all can help spread the word in 2010.

I look forward to getting to know you all better and hearing all your comments and opinions in 2010!

Thanks for some very informative insight – at the heart of the matter, golf is big business and along with that comes big marketing dollars feeding a media machine.

As a consumer it is hard to make informed decisions with factual information – but thank goodness for the Internet and its ability to link players together in forums like this! Keep up the good work…

Well I can tell you this is absolutely true. I was a big supporter or both sites mentioned. Well the W site always was badmouthing the B site about how the owner was not doing anything for the consumer and was all about the money. Well this was back in 2007,8,9. Well webite W who was the smaller more concerned site always defending their views how they were all about the consumer. Well guess what it’s 2010 and site B is all but a memory and site W is the New big kid on the block and guess what. THey are all about the money now! Hopefully this will be a lesson and My Golf Spy will never turn into either B or W because they both became so greedy they forgot about US! The consumer! UNKNOWN

Because your motivation is in the right place, and because there are plenty more of us who think like you do, this forum and website will prosper. The only thing that will ever threaten it would be for the biggie golf companies, and their wannabe competitors, to pay attention to customer needs one at a time personally. The cold stand-off approach is the same reason there will always be prosperous community banks. The golf industry could take a lesson from that, but when heads swell from being big, apparently brain matter gets squeezed out of the cranium.

Kudos to all who are involved in maintaining this site, and all the spies that send in factual information and pics. Hopefully, manufactirers will start paying attention to this site and the growing following it enjoys and realize we serious golfers are…serious. We are also knowledgeable of technology, trends, options, and facts. We do not always need a “name” to endorse the product. If it works because of true technology vs. hype, we will but it and use it. It’s as simple as that.

I was just reading thru the bomb and gauge the past week on this subject and they were obviously 180° of a different thought. I had to laugh as your above sentence reflects the thoughtful thinking of people like us who actually care about equipt.

I know a small OEM who told me that his clubs would be reviewed / featured with consideration if he purchased add space for their website.

I would be more than happy if the tests were presented in strictly a technical manner – give me the club at 4 swing speeds (covers every hcp) and present the trackman data.
Simple as that and I probably would buy a particular product as I would be able to see how it might perform for me in real life.

Excellent article, and one that needed to be written. Being a small up-and-comer in the putter manufacturing arena has exposed us to many such roadblocks. We have seen this with independent test facilities as well. Spend the bucks, get a great review. The first year we submitted our newest model, we received rave reviews. The comment was, “Best putter we have seen in the 4-10′ range, the most important distance…” We called the director to clarify. He stated that his testers rated our putter in the top 5-10 of all the putters that they had tested to date. When pressed as to where he thought we fell, he stated he could not say publicly because he had to remain unbiased. Fair enough. “But, I will say that I am using your putter” was the final comment. A huge feather for us. The next year we submitted the same putter again, but did not follow up with large amounts of fees for proper testing. We ended up in the middle of the pack with a very expensive, well-heeled European manufacturer taking 1st place.

Fantastic editorial.. I admire your guts, and I understand precisely your feelings. For two years we were asked to submit product for the Hot List slection committee. We did not make it the first year, but when I was approached at the 2008 PGA Show, I voiced my concern that every product selected was for the same big boys, and absolutely no mention about the innovation of our putter to meet the most important feature a putter can have, adjustable lie angle. Also no mention that all our putters are made in the USA.

In May of 2008, this Magazine included us in a small article to point out the adjustable feature of our putters. When we recieved the invitation to submit product for the 2009 Hot List process, I felt confident that we would be recognized this time. Guess what, I was wrong.

That is why we will be honored to get our info to you to advertise in 2010. As I shared with you recently, we will be making a big announcement in a few weeks.

Very Best Regards, You are going to find many golfers looking for unbiased info will flock to your site.

We should all try and keep our principles. The Golf industry should remember the ethos of the scientist a negative answer is just as exciting as a positive answer you learn something new. If a product’s performance isn’t up to standard people have a right to know about it. Constructive critcism should always be encouraged how else can one improve? Happy New Year MGS.

Well the large golf companies dont like constructive criticism they like control of content. Everyday on forums like GolfWRX and Bombsquad content is take down by the request (demand) of major OEM’s like Taylormade because they don’t approve of the negative comments or constructive criticism being made about their products on these forums.

TIP: for the major OEM’s…make a good product that you can stand behind and sleep well at night knowing you have created something good for the consumer and you won’t have to worry about this.

      More power to MGS.
Just a word of warning. While it is easy to be unbiased and impartial when you are a small player, as you grow and your influence spreads it will get harder to maintain that impartiality. Presure comes to bear from those big companies and even if you are not beholding to them they certainly know how to turn the screws.
I admire your goals, impartial advice for consumers is sorely needed but the big boys won’t like it when you lift the lid on their BS marketing hype when more and more consumers are listening to you. Sincerely, good luck.

I agree with your comment OldPlayer (Who I think works for a large golf company) ;)

It is a tough to stay impartial but when money is not your main goal it becomes much easier. I could make much more money if I took advertising from the major OEM’s but I refuse. And if I did I would be like every other publication out there…and if you have not noticed they are almost all struggling because of this. Times have changed they just have not caught up yet. And that is why you see many of them closing their doors day after day. With information moving as fast as it does nowadays…people (golfers included) don’t want to hear it from the manufacturer they want to hear opinions from the other consumers.

I really appreciate your feedback though…it is all very true.

The thing i like about MGS more than anything else is the 100% impartiality… If a product is good, you say so. If its a heap of crap, you say that too. Us in the UK don’t get anything like the amount of info about clubs or products, this is the way I can keep up with whats happening, its always nice to have some info for a customer, something that will bring him back in the future, something aliong the lines of ‘have you seen the new… yet? Its out next whenever.’ This generates interest, and without fail I tell them I got the info from MGS, many of whom are now also MGS readers…
