PING G425 Driver Family Hits USGA List
  • The PING G425 Driver family has landed on the USGA Conforming Clubs List
  • There will be three models in the G425 Driver family
  • Retail availability isn’t expected until 2021

If you’ve been paying attention to Most Wanted Driver testing over the last few years, you can understand why the PING G425 Driver is the one we’ve been waiting for. The good news is that it just popped up on the USGA Conforming Clubs list. The bad news is that if you’re holding out for the PING G425 Driver, you’re going to have to wait a little bit longer.

When COVID effectively shut down production at the golf equipment companies this spring, PING decided to delay its scheduled launches until 2021. That means no G425 Drivers this year.

Blame COVID

A booming equipment market coupled with social distancing rules on factory floors is leading to significantly longer than average lead times for equipment orders. That’s especially true for companies like PING, who do 100% of their assembly in the USA.

Rather than compound the delays (for many brands, keeping up with orders means not falling further behind), PING is sticking to its plan to hold its G425 driver (and everything else) until early next year…mostly. The ripple here is that, while you won’t see it in the USA until 2021, other parts of the world, including Japan and Australia, will be able to get their hands on the G425 lineup this fall (as Australia rolls into its summer).

The PING G425 drivers are expected to be in play on the Japan tours this week. PGA Tour players will get a crack at them sometime in October.

For average golfers in the USA and Europe, January-ish seems about right. Sorry.

So with those unfortunate details out of the way, here’s a quick look at what’s on the USGA list.

3 PING G425 Driver Models

As has more or less been the case with previous releases, the PING G425 Driver lineup will feature three models.

PING G425 LST Driver

An image of the PING G425 LST Driver from the USGA, as part of the Ping g425 Driver Family

We can safely assume that the G425 LST is what it has been for the past two generations – PING’s lowest spinning model. I think it’s reasonable to say that the LST series has surprised PING by how well it has performed across the fitting spectrum.

I’m confident that if we surveyed our staff, the LST would be the #1 rated driver of the MyGolfSpy era.

The point of curiosity here is whether PING has done anything to further lower spin and create more separation within its lineup. That’s a possibility. The safer bet is that, with the G425 LST, PING has chosen not to fix what isn’t broken. One way or another, I expect PING to carry-on with arguably the most playable low spin driver on the market.

PING 425 MAX Driver

An image of the PING G425 MAX Driver from the USGA, as part of the Ping g425 Driver Family

By name (and number), the PING G400 MAX is the oldest driver in the PING lineup. There was no equivalent for PING’s MAX(imum) MOI driver in the G410 lineup. In the G425 series, it’s the PLUS that’s the odd man out. I don’t expect that will change.

There will be no PING G425 PLUS driver. No worries, the G410 PLUS remains a damn good driver.

MAX is effectively replacing PLUS, and while we can’t share specifics, based on PING’s recent history in the driver category, we can reasonably assume that PING was able to push MOI high enough in its middle of the market offering that offering a PLUS and a MAX in the same lineup would have been a little confusing for consumers and plenty redundant for fitters.

When the details come out, you should expect MOI for the G425 MAX is going to be a big – likely market-leading – number. I can’t reasonably say that the PING G425 MAX will be the most forgiving driver on the market in 2021, but I’m confident that was PING’s objective.

PING G425 SFT

An image of the PING G425 SFT Driver from the USGA, as part of the Ping g425 Driver Family

The quiet, perhaps underappreciated workhorse of PING’s driver family, the SFT (Straight Flight Technology) is PING’s slice killer; consistently producing the most left-side bias of all of the drivers we’ve tested since the first SFT hit the market.

The caveat is that Callaway’s Big Bertha B-21 reads like it has serious potential to kill spin with a fundamentally different approach. Still, until testing reveals otherwise, for golfers fighting a slice and desperate to take the right-side out of play, the PING G425 SFT will be the one to beat.

PING G425 Drivers – Other Observations

All three of the PING G425 Driver models feature adjustable hosels. The adapters and degree of adjustability will be unchanged from the G410.

The PING G425 LST and PING G425 MAX both feature adjustable weight anchored to the extreme rear of the club. You can reasonably expect that the iterations from G410 will play heavily in both the MOI and shot-shaping portions of the PING G425 Driver story.

In addition to the Tungsten weight (there’s always Tungsten), the USGA photos suggest a 3-position (draw, neutral, fade) movable weight. The span of the positions appears narrower than G410’s. The simple formula for the effectiveness of movable weight technology boils down to how much weight is being moved over how large an area.

With that in mind, I suspect PING is trading a little bit of range for a higher concentration of mass at the rear of the club. The result should be similar trajectory control paired with higher MOI. Whatever the performance result of the new design, it appears to function identically to the G410.

Coming Not-So-Soon

As I said, we should consider this an early preview. The PING G425 driver family isn’t expected to hit retail in the US until early 2021.

That kinda sucks, but if there’s any upside, I suppose it’s that you can score a G410 for $100 under the original asking price. That’s something, I guess.

More information as we’re able to share it.

The color scheme for these is pretty sweet. I like the Raiders look. Looks like it’s going to be time to retire the G30’s. I’ll be playing G425 from LW to Driver come 2021.

Have the G400 and it is the best driver I have ever owned. Tried the G400 Max and it did not work nearly as well for me, so a larger head and moveable weights might help a fitter but not me.

Turbulators! Funny how the best players in the world can play this driver and not be bothered by them, but the weekend warriors go crazy over them. Saying they can’t stand to look at them, they need a classic clean head…yada yada.

Good post. Camera and champ plays the 410 LST. Drives it like what, 3:20. Guess those turbulators aren’t bothering him. I’m amazed at how many people talk about turbulators, I guess that’s what makes golf such a personal game.

Well, yeah, a pro golfer could play well with a dinner plate glued to a broom handle. There is no question Ping drivers perform, but what is the point of the turbulators? It’s a tired tech gimmick that the company should have abandoned a long time ago. Seriously, Ping, it’s over. Lose the turbulators. We all know they don’t do anything. Let them go. We’ll forgive you.

I’m not sure where you’re seeing or hearing lots of people complain about Turbulators. Perhaps on the first iteration 5 years ago, but I think by now the golfing community is pretty open to busy/aggressive driver heads.

As stated in the article, the 410LST is an absolute ripper. Everyone knows you put a heavy weight in the draw spot and it’s fabulous for mid-to-high speed. I love Ping, and I have no interest in this one. All I hope is they go a few years with the same driver sleeve. PITA to change those. If the 425LST is anything equivalent, it’s going to be very difficult on the competition.

I tested out the 410 driver this year at a demo day fitting. It wasn’t the greatest swing day for me, but I am slower swing speed anyways and I respect the Ping guy for saying that he could sell me a 410 driver, but it was only a few yards better than my Tommy Armour 845. I look forward to trying the 425 (after I made an obligatory 420 joke) next year. Right now testing a D7 9 degree with a regular shaft (MGS fitting suggested using the stiff shaft, but it did not work for me).

Great preview Tony! I was among the MGS G410P test group and it continues to shine. I ended up opting for the G400 SFT in 3w and 5w and their “straight flight technology” is just that. I think one gives up a little distance with the SFT but it is a great trade off for those that fight a fade… which is yardage robbing too. I’ll be looking forward to seeing how the G425 series compares.

Just hoping they get rid of their turbulators, agree with ROLLTIDEJAKE, and hide the dragonfly mess, make it clean and classic. Otherwise I might have to look into getting a small amount of VANTABLACK or BLACK 3.0.

This is the same for every single adjustable club other than callaway..
More parts and/or bigger hozel = less weight where you want it.
Grab yourself some syringes and some white spirits and pop your grip off and on in 20 seconds to suit your changes.

Awesome. G425 has been registered at the United States Patent and Trademark Office for over a year and a half. It’s nice to see it show up at USGA.

It will be interesting to see what, if anything, comes from GLIDE 4.0 and GLIDE FORGED PRO, EYE 2 TOE, iBLADE 2.0, and I525…which are also registered at the USPTO.

Definitely nothing earth-shattering here from what I’m reading, & I think that’s a good thing. No useless & idiotic claims of “2.2 yards more w/ a 110 mph swing speed”. I have a 410 LST & after hitting a number of other drivers, nothing feels/looks as good to me. The new Callaway sounds intriguing, but it w/b my luck that as soon as I purchase it, those lessons I’ve been taking will kick in & I’ll start drawing the ball, probably not the optimum ball flight w/ that driver!

I do have a driver fitting at the start of each season just to check/reaffirm that I’m playing the most optimum model for me (good thing I have friends at a golf store!). The bottom line for me, since I have an upgraded shaft that I really like, if the 425 feels & performs noticeably better (& I mean noticeably), I may look just for a new head on eBay.

I am usually a big fan of Ping stuff. This year I set out to replace my older Ping driver that was going on 6 or 7 years old. I did a full shop not holding any bias against any manufacturer. Was fitted for all of them and have to say the G410 failed to impress me and I had great excitement for it. Ended up coming down between the Cobra and TM Sim. The Sim ended up being the winner for me and I can see why so many pros use it. This 425 doesn’t look that much different, I’m sure it’s still a quality item, but Ping is the slowest to actually bring new innovative products. They just got moveable weights with the 410. Moveable weights have been around for what… 10 years. I like Ping but they take little risk and are slow to bring something different. I will pass on this one as I am set for a few years now, but I am sure it will still be a decent driver.

To be fair, tje G410 was THE driver to own until 2020. Also, all of the big manufacturers are moving away from moveable weights as the threaded inserts or support material takes weight that could be better used elsewhere.

I think when speaking to drivers or any club/manufacturers we need to be careful when stating one driver is “THE” one to own. Obviously given my swing and my launch conditions the 410 was not the one for me. I had to give up on trying to fit for it after the 5th shaft I just couldn’t get my spin rates below 3000 off the driver. I will be honest despite going in unbiased I told my fitter I am not a huge fan of Callaway or TM drivers but wanted to see them all. To my surprise having the Sim perform the best for me was shocking. I guess my point being even as good of reviews that My Golf Spy does and rates drivers as fairly as possible it’s important to remember the swings of each of us is as individual as our fingerprints and there can be general recommendations but to claim any one driver will fit all of us, just confuses newcomers and consumers more. As for the weight part, I agree probably having weights that require more threading and weight in unwanted places makes sense, we just have to give Ping another 10 years to figure that part out.
