By the way, Callaway is only spend $25 million on the Chicopee plant, and had plans to do it since 2018. This information is readily available in their investor presentations. They have known about the off-center cores for a long time, and have continued to sell them. They have taken no real actions after the MGS ball test, just classic Callaway marketing.

Not exactly true. Expenditures were originally supposed to be around 50 million over 3-years (which is why if you look at the 2018 and 2019 reports individually, you’ll find the 25 million number in both). It’s certainly true the QC issues have been ongoing (it’s a hell of a list). There may have been a disconnect between Carlsbad and Chicopee, Callaway HQ wasn’t fully aware of the extent of the issue – though I’d also add we don’t see eye to eye on the extent of it.

Regarding whether or not the MGS Ball test and #FindItCut it has influenced anything… The bulk of the upgrades were planned and in progress, that’s true. It’s also true that a fair amount of investment in upgrades is code for More Truvis Machines and had nothing to do with improving the quality. Having said that, we had a call with Callaway, and while I can’t discuss specifics at this time, we’ve been given an overview of process improvements and equipment upgrades and the specific quality issues they’re intended to resolve. Included in that was a substantial equipment investment in machinery that wasn’t part of the original 50 million plan, and which Callaway, in no uncertain terms, directly attributed to the ball test and everything that came after. They might be blowing smoke, they may not. If it leads to a better ball for consumers, I don’t much care either way. One way or the other, we will see what’s real when the next generation of golf balls launch.

You’re going to see it industry-wide in 2020. QUALITY and CONSISTENCY will be the focal point for the golf ball discussion and we’re certainly going to do our part to differentiate between brands who offer it and those who don’t.

Tony; What do you make of the rash of steep price discounting for golf balls this holiday season (If anything)? It seems more exaggerated than in the past. Everyone is cutting prices by 25%, some by even more. Srixon. Bridgestone, Callaway, even Titleist. Most all with personalized printing. Is this the effect of web-based sellers, or a “Snell effect” (DTC model), or have they finally come to their senses that they can’t expect to make a killing selling golf balls in the modern web-based market? Thanks for all the good work. Keep on cutting (Find it. Cut it.).
