Under Armour Spieth 5 SL Review

There is a lot of cool gear in the golf equipment world that doesn’t always fit neatly into Most Wanted Tests or Buyer’s Guides. You still want to know how it performs. In our We Tried It series, we put gear to the test and let you know if it works as advertised.

What We Tried

The Under Armour Spieth 5 SL

What is the Spieth 5 SL?

Until now, the Spieth shoe has exclusively been a spiked shoe. The 2021 version ditches the spikes and takes on the growing spikeless trend. For golf nerds like me, the shoe has a multitude of features that indicate Under Armour understands the difference shoes can make in a player’s game. These include a 3D-molded footbed for improved fit and less slip and a HOVR outsole foam which Under Armour claims to get you more connected with the ground without losing energy transfer in your swing.

The Spieth 5 SL also has a heel counter that locks in your foot with no room for heel movement. It has a TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) sole which is more flexible, lightweight and durable compared to typical rubber or nitrile soles. Throw in a waterproof membrane and you have the first spikeless Spieth golf shoe.

Why Are We Trying It?

It might be because Jordan Spieth has been playing well in recent months while wearing his new spikeless shoe. Coincidence?

Under Armour is an apparel powerhouse in the U.S. Recently, Under Armour has been gaining market share in the UK. They have also been performing consistently well in our Most Wanted Spikeless and Spiked Shoe Tests.

But is the Spieth 5 SL any different or better from any other golf spikeless shoe on the market?

Product Expert

Hi, I’m Harry and I am a professional golf shoe tester. (Yes, they exist.) I actually test a lot of things at MyGolfSpy and play professionally when I’m not checking and comparing specs on gloves, rangefinders, bags, ball retrievers, etc. You can call me the Director of Product Testing here at MGS. You can also just call me Harry. That’s fine, too.

Wearing The Spikeless Spieth 5 SL

My first impressions of the Spieth 5 SL? Like any other Spieth shoe, they look long and narrow. I don’t mind that look. The previous Spieth shoes do tend to run narrow. This is NOT the case with the Spieth 5 SL. I have relatively wide feet and the 5SLs are comfortable and have enough support to provide good stability.

The spikes/lugs are a little different compared to other spikeless shoes.

The Spieth 5 SL has softer lugs/spikes to help you stay grounded while allowing your sole to move without losing traction. If you can envision the suction cups on an octopus tentacle, you have somewhat of a visual of what the lugs do during a swing. (A stretch, but imagine the body of an octopus staying central and steady because it’s tentacles grip and move. It’s the best analogy I’ve got people) The lugs spread when pressure is applied creating better friction with the ground preventing you from slipping on your most violent of swings.

The tongue is attached to the body of the shoe for a more locked-in feeling. Under Armour has brought in the lateral outsole, providing just the right amount of support.

According to Under Armour, one of their main focuses with the Spieth 5 SL, like all other UA products for that matter, is putting performance first. So how did the Spieth 5 SL perform?

Tell Me What You Really Think?

Personally, these shoes are in the top third of spikeless shoes on the market. But did they blow them out of the water? Not quite.

Let’s get to what the shoe could improve on.

The collar and top line are raised slightly too high towards the front part of the ankle. It digs into your ankle at the start but loosens up after a few holes. Not a big issue.

The shoes do run half a size big. I’m a size 9 but the 8.5 is where I felt comfortable. Again, not a big issue. The overall fit was good and the inner sock tongue helped with that aspect. However, you can feel where the inner sock tongue finishes because of where it was cut off. It’s located where your toes start which can be annoying as you feel where the tongue finishes and where TPU upper starts.

The outer material used in the heel to mid section will get dirty over time and will be tough to clean.

So what did the Spieth 5 SL do well? Traction was fantastic. I know you might have seen Spieth wearing these shoes with removable spikes in previous PGA TOUR events but I can only imagine it’s more subconscious than anything. I didn’t slip once, even topping out at 123-mph clubhead speed.

The overall stability of the shoe, like any other Spieth shoe, was great. I felt compact and stable thanks to its heel counter which wraps around your entire heel.

The Spieth 5 SL has incorporated UA’s comfortable HOVR sole that has proven itself over years of our Most Wanted Test. Personally, I think the 5 SL’s comfort is up there with the best spikeless shoes on the market.

Throw in good styling and you have a top-performing shoe.

Final Thoughts

Under Armour has always put performance first and the Spieth 5 SL is no exception. It performs well in all aspects, ensuring you have a shoe that you can trust.

Why did I say, “it didn’t blow the competitors out of the water”? Simple. The Spieth 5 SL had enough small/minor issues that wouldn’t rank it No. 1 in the Best Spikeless Shoe Test. Sure, I’m being harsh but that’s what it takes to be the best of the best.

Don’t get me wrong. The Spieth 5 SL is a good shoe. I would buy this shoe in a heartbeat if my first choice was sold out. Its great traction, stability and overall comfort make it one to put on your “spoil myself” list if you’re buying a new spikeless shoe.

The shoe costs $200 with a two-year waterproof warranty. It comes in white only but that just so happens to be my favorite color for a golf shoe.

For me, these shoes are too narrow. I usually wear 11W, but I got 12W because it looked pretty narrow to begin with. Oh, yeah – it’s f88king narrow and insultingly so. The regular version should be labeled as narrow and the wide should be labeled as regular. But, I guess guys don’t like being labeled narrow.. Anyway, if your feet are not f88king narrow – don’t even try because it will insult you.

I like the spike less shoes ! These look heavy , Hot, and over done with artwork on the shoe . Weight ,flex and breakable and grip with a classy look is my type shoe , these don’t interest me at all with a $200 price tag !!!!

Nice review. I have been very happy with mine so far. They are very comfortable and have had excellent traction and stability. I usually wear the UA Drive spiked shoe which I love, but these have been a nice addition. I am a huge UA fan in general, and would have bought these even if they didn’t have the Speith name.

I think I will wait for the fall winter and buy at $150. I have an older Speith model – the 2? Very narrow. I’ll give these a test fit before buying but they sound right for me.

Nice review, but ouch, $200? I’m sure I could find much much better value for substantially less, esp considering they’re spikeless. I really like Jordan Spieth but the fact that his name are on these, I couldn’t care less. And he doesn’t wear the spikeless version.

Thanks for the review Harry! In general, is there an advantage to playing in spikeless shoes, or is it jut personal preference?

A lot of golfers use spikeless for personal preference. Depending on the OEM, you can gain distance using spikes but it all comes down to what spikeless shoe you already have. The Spieth 5 Sl has great traction and I didn’t loose distance off the tee

Hi Harry: The sole of the 5SL reminds me of the Payntr X 001-F (not surprising given Mike Forsey was at UA before joining Payntr). Any comparisons of Spieth 5SL vs. the Payntr? As a point of reference, I find the Payntr to be extremely comfortable with excellent traction and cost $40 less than the 5SL. Thanks…

Hi, Mr Director of Product Testing :) ….. Love the shoe, looks great, might give it a shot, which is a big deal for me, a lifelong Puma (soccer, tennis and golfshoe) wearer. You mention, you would buy this one if your first choice was sold out.

May I ask, what IS your first choice.??

      Good review, Cheers, Ron.

      Hi Ron,

Thanks for the love. The Spieth is a good shoe for sure and looking forward to testing it in a true head to head test next year.

      Hi Harry,
Thank you for the great review! Did you have a chance to test the shoe in wet conditions? I am a dew sweeper and am wondering if the traction holds up in wet conditions. I remember Jordan complaining to Greller about slipping a couple of times when he was playing one morning when the ground was wet (before he started wearing the spiked version).

      Hi Mike,

Glad you enjoyed the review. The shoe didn’t slip for me on dewy conditions. However, like any spikeless shoe, if you’re on very tight lies, like links golf in the UK and it has water on the ground, you might slip a little.

Again, I didn’t slip in any conditions. Wet or dry. Jordan also has a lot of foot movement during his swing which can cause some grip issue from time to time.

have you tested the square golf shoes that supposedly add distance? I would love to get your assessment of any of the newer brands that are built to add distance.

Funny you should mention that. We are planning a lab test comparing the Sqairz shoes and any other shoe that claim to add distance. Hopefully, we can get this one done soon for you guys

For summer golfing I use a $30, mesh, lightweight trail running shoes. They have deep grooves. I then take a rotary tool and cut perpendicular grooves on the soles thus creating square spikes. Next year or two, I’ll do it again.
In two years I’m out $60. My $120, spiked Footjoys are on the shelf for wet or cold conditions.

Harry, so the ADIDAS TOUR 360 XT-SL TEX is still your go-to/recommended spikeless shoe?

@Kevin he did wear the spikeless for a couple rounds earlier in the year, but for the most part you’re right he’s been in a spiked version. I asked UA Cx support if they knew about a spiked version coming to the public but got a non-answer.

I wear a 10 in the Spieth 4, got a 10 in these, and experienced pain in my right foot after a range session. Happened twice so I could make sure it was the shoe and not something else. It it ever so slightly more narrow at the toe I think, my toes are being squeezed which is why the pain was there when my weight shifted in a repetitive manner. UA recommended I go up to a 10.5, so when they finally get some in stock at my local store I’ll try them on.

      Hi Harry,
I have a long but narrow foot and loved the Spieth 1 and have decided to buy the Spieth 5.
Trouble is, I live in Europe and they only market the “Wide E” here. UA’s online help was not able to confirm if/when the standard width will be marketed to the EU. Do you have any information in this respect?
Same question for the UA HOVR Drive, which your spiked shoe review convinced me to buy.
      Thanks,

      Arthur

      Hi Arthur.

I do not have any information on that subject. I know every OEM is struggling with getting inventory from over seas. I’m sure it wont be too much longer.

Funny you have that problem. The reason I say that is I NEED wide shoes and have found it incredibly difficult to find wide shoes in Europe. Golf shoes are easier but workout or hiking or others have been really tough.

Agreed, I would have expected that the narrow version would have more sale potential in the EU. Golf is the only sport where it’s really difficult for me and my narrow feet to find shoes.. I usually am an Adidas guy as I can buy them eyes closed in a 45 1/3 size (EU size), and I did try the ones Harry ranked in his spiked and spikeless rankings, but for some reason their golf shoes seem wider and it does not fit. The front of my feet are completely lose in the shoes. Except in the Stan Smith version where the laces go way down and allow me to tighten it, but as nice as it is, it’s not a shoe to play in everyday nor in wet conditions.

So the one problem with this shoe its being catered as if Jordan Speith himself wears the spikeless shoe.. When indeed he doesnt wear the spikeless verison. He himself wears a spiked version no one can get.. I have not seen a single round in competition wearing the spikeless.

I mentioned it in the article about Jordan wearing spikes. Personally, I think it’s more subconscious than anything else. I had no problem with the spikeless version.
