    2020 BLUETOOTH SPEAKER BUYER’S GUIDE

What’s your favorite band? The Beatles? Queen? Red Hot Chili Peppers? No matter what music you’re into, you can listen to it  (at a reasonable volume) on the golf course with a Bluetooth speaker.

This year’s test had speakers with clips that attach to your golf bag, magnetic strips that secure to the cart and speakers that can relay GPS distances to the green.

During testing, some models stood out for their sound quality and robust features. No matter your budget, you can buy a speaker to keep you swinging to the beat.

With an ever-increasing number of options, finding the right Bluetooth speaker to fit your needs can be a bit overwhelming. That’s where we come in. We put the top speaker devices on the market to the test to ensure you have the best information available when it comes time to buy.

Whether you’re looking to buy a Bluetooth speaker today, some buying advice to get started or just want a closer look at what’s on the market, this guide will help you find the right speaker to fit your needs.

Best Sound Quality - Ultimate Ears WonderBoom 2

Best Sound Quality - Ultimate Ears WonderBoom 2

The UE WonderBoom 2 offers top quality 360-degre omnidirectional sound and volume capabilities. You can pair two units together for true stereo sound. UE's new "Outdoor Boost" mode allows you to crank-up powerful audio that's engineered to be heard outside.

Bluetooth Speakers – Features That Matter

    Sound

(Omnidirectional versus directional) Listening to music should be an immersive experience. Sound quality shouldn’t fade because you’re on the wrong side of your speaker. The sound from directional speakers is less immersive, often limited by the direction the speaker happens to be facing. We found that omnidirectional speakers are better suited for the golf course.

Speakers like the UE WonderBoom 2 and UE Boom 3 are great examples of quality omnidirectional speakers. Directional speakers are not as well suited for the 360-degree challenge of the golf course, at least for those looking for consistent sound in and out of the cart.

    Connectivity

No matter how great a speaker sounds, it’s only as good as its connection. The best speakers for golf allow you plenty of room to wander.

The top performers maintained their connectivity despite 40-plus yards of separation. If you carry your phone while playing, especially if you find yourself wandering far from your cart, maximizing your connectivity distance is essential to keeping the music going.

The JBL Clip 3 and the JBL Flip 4 offer superb Bluetooth connectivity.

    Battery Life

How long does your golf speaker last when it’s unplugged and paired with your Bluetooth device? Bluetooth speakers can last from five to 24 hours per charge. For a day that starts at the course and ends at the pool, an extra couple of hours can come in handy.

Examples of Bluetooth speakers that have long-lasting battery life are RokForm G-Rok and Anker Soundcore, which offer up to 24 hours of boogie time.

EXPERT TIP - Finding the Right Speaker for How You Travel the Course

Golfers who walk should favor smaller and lighter speaker options. The ideal solution is likely one that clips to your bag. Golfers who prefer to ride, should take advantage of sound-rich speakers which easily fit in the car's cup holders.

Most Feature Rich - Bushnell Wingman

Most Feature Rich - Bushnell Wingman

The Bushnell Wingman gives you a little extra incentive to talk trash. It comes pre-loaded with a selection of phrases or you can record you own to surprise your buddies with a little healthy heckling. It mounts to your cart with a powerful magnet and gives you distances to the front, middle and back of the green as well as hazards.

    Bluetooth Speakers – More Tips

    • Bigger doesn’t always mean better (or louder). Some smaller speakers outperform their large competitors and better fit in a cart’s cup holder.
    • Nearly all Bluetooth speakers are portable, meaning you can take them anywhere without needing a cord for them to play music.
    • Some Bluetooth speakers can also be used for phone calls. The added versatility can be helpful, especially if you don’t have to sacrifice sound quality to get it.
    • While most speakers are water resistant, some, like the like JBL Flip 4, are fully waterproof. So even if you get rained on during your round or your speaker takes a soggy tumble at the pool, the music will keep playing.

What do I need to know about Bluetooth speakers?

Q: How do I charge my Bluetooth speaker?

A: Most up to date devices have USB ports that charge your speaker. Some older, less advanced speakers still require batteries to keep the music going.

Q: What is the difference between waterproof and water resistant?

A: Water-resistant speakers will survive a few drops of rain or a quick dip in the pool. Waterproof speakers can tackle the harshest of weather conditions and be submerged under water for an extended period of time without harm.

Q: Are Bluetooth speakers allowed on the golf course?

A: While we’d wager some courses have explicit rules against speakers, we hope it’s not common. Golf is a game, right? Aren’t games meant to be enjoyed? Yes, there is a rule prohibiting music during competition (something about using the rhythm of the beat in your golf swing),  but, if you’re respectful of others on the course, listening to music with your buddies during a fun round shouldn’t be an issue. Keep it at a reasonable volume and it’s all good. Go ahead and post your scores. We won’t tell.

This is no joke, this actually happened to me: i’m playing in a tournament at my local club, and it’s set up by tee times (not a shotgun start). It finally gets around to our turn to tee off, and away we go. The first hole we play is about 350 yards, and no one can reach it, but you have to wait for people to clear out of the way in the landing area in front of it before you can hit your tee shot (it’s downhill, so almost everyone’s ball rolls out to 250-280 but then goes back uphill leaving a 50-80 yard shot for 95% of the golfers that hit it decently). The group in front has cleared the green, so we’ve struck our approaches and are now on the green, lining up our putts. The group in FRONT of us is waiting to tee off on the 2nd hole, so they’re sitting on the tee box, roughly 40 yards away from us, jamming out their own audio preferences. Now mind you, the group BEHIND us has already hit, and they’re down in the bottom, about 50-60 yards away from us, jamming their own tunes also. So we’ve got music, two different kinds, blaring at us from two different directions. It wasn’t very pleasant, and at this point, none of us is truly giving 100% of our attention to our respective putts.

I’m amazed that etiquette, on a golf course of all places, has fallen so far by the wayside that this is even a topic of discussion.

Last week while enjoying a nice peaceful game a group of yahoo’s pulled up to the green beside my tee and cranked up the volume so they could here that junk on the green. I blame you ! Enough is enough

Answer one question. Why do you think you should be able to listen to music as loud as you want and those of who object to it must listen? Not sure why it’s hard for you to consider others.

Funny story – playing at my course one day and my group is in the fairway on a par 4. Group in front walked off the green and headed to the next hole, a par 3. Their carts were parked near the tee and at least 100 yards away from us, and we can clearly hear the music blasting from the cart. One guy in our group blocks his shot so far right that the ball is heading right towards one of the guys walking to the tee. We’re yelling “Fore!” and dude doesn’t even flinch when the ball lands right next to him. Couldn’t hear us yelling because of the music. Ignorance is bliss, I guess.

If you want to listen with ear pods, be my guest. Otherwise don’t impose your musical taste on everyone else. Your “rad” or “gnarly” preference may be the last thing I want to hear, and mine, yours. Play it loud, but off the course and on the road.

Totally and completely agree with the commenters who are anti-music playing at the course.. Music carries in a place that is otherwise silent (as it should be). Nowadays people can’t seem to stand the beauty of silence. and bring the noise to the golf course.. Newsflash #1–If you can hear your music outside of 10 feet from your cart, its TOO LOUD. Newsflash #2–there is such an invention as earbuds. Play your music as loud as you want and bother no one. Wow. What a novel concept these days.

Love my UE 3… bathes my 4 some in universally enjoyed music all day. Nice for the backyard when I get home after a round. Fits the cupholder perfectly, never had it fall out. Has good distance for the BT connection. It will go as loud as you can get away with on a golf course and then some. (Sorry Fran)… I love having music while golfing, especially on a 5 hour muni round… I have a couple golf buddies who don’t like music on the course… I just don’t play with them anymore. I am always conscientious about other groups and keeping them out of the bubble… funny how some ask me to TURN IT UP, because their speaker died or whatever. Very rare to ever have anyone complain anymore, it’s the new normal.

Speakers are like anything else in golf. I LOVE listening to music on the course as I usually play as a walking single and get paired up with 2somes or. 3somes in carts. I replace my divots and fix my ball marks so of course I ask if anyone prefers no music and then I play it just loud enough to hear while I am walking. I can’t hear it on the green when putting. Simple common sense.

I will say more than a few times the players I am paired with ask me to turn it up and I will, but only loud enough for us to hear on the green. More than 50 feet away and you can’t hear it. Of course I hear others playing LOUD music and it usually comes from carts parked almost on the tee box or green from 4somes that don’t replace divots or fix ball marks. and bring their own alcohol. Speakers aren’t the problem, inconsiderate golfers are the problem.

There seems to be a consensus that music on the golf course should be curtailed. I agree, there is no room for music when it impacts others.

I saw somewhere that a course policy limited the volume to be only audible from 10 yards or less. I could live with this.

Courses should stop leasing carts with USB ports, and post a sound policy inside the cart.

While I am all for a good time, I don’t like music on the course simply because not everyone likes the same music. All 4 of us in our group prefer vastly different types of music so to settle on one type that will be good for all is really tough. Also, if listening to music it should be personal and not for any other group to hear it.

Playing music on the course is disgusting and one of the worst golf trends of the last 10 years. To the people who play music please note – I don’t like your crappy music. It’s a distraction and ruins an otherwise delightful time spent outdoors. Use ear buds if you really must have music.

Agree. Keep your music to yourself. Most guys who play it are not considerate. It should not be heard beyond your cart but at times it can be heard a couple holes away. This is a real etiquette issue in my mind. I am not sure why courses don’t post that the music should only be heard in the cart. That seems the right thing to do.

“Reasonable” volume is always the issue. If you park you cart by the tee, and those on the green 10 yards away are disturbed by it, that is not reasonable. But those that are arrogant and pompous that they think their music should be played at concert-levels on the course, deserve a sand wedge against their head.

I agree with SOME of the comments posted. There is a level of courtesy that needs to be upheld on the course. However, I love having my music out there, so I will not be paying attention to 100% of the comments already posted.

That being said, this list should have included the Bose SoundLink Micro. It provides perfect sound on-course and can strap to either your bag or directly to the golf cart. It’s a perfect add to your bag.

Ugh. My least favorite review each year. I’m so tired of hearing other people’s music from 100 yards away. Or the people that have to keep the volume up when their cart is parked next to the green you are on and they are way away on the tee box. Remember, your taste in music sucks. Don’t advertise it.

They should be banned. I wait until they leave to play my shot.
        Slows down pace of play.

I’m OK with it as long as I can’t hear it when I’m more than 10 ft away from your cart. People just aren’t really good about that, though.
