BEST GOLF RAIN GEAR 2022

It’s that time of year again where those summer showers come out of nowhere so it’s important you have a rain suit to keep you dry.

This is a category where the prices of rain gear can deter you from purchasing but ask yourself this question: Do I invest in a top-quality rain suit that may last my whole golfing career or buy a cheap jacket every year?

Whatever your preference may be, we have the answer: the best of the best (and pricier), rain suits under $300 or a jacket for about 50 bucks.

Most of the rain gear, like waterproof bags, did a good job at keeping water out but not every one went the extra mile with breathability. The companies that did well made breathability a top priority so you don’t feel like you’re golfing inside a trash bag.

Whether you’re looking to buy golf rain gear today, buying advice to get started or just want a closer look at what’s on the market, this guide will help you find the right golf rain gear to fit your needs.

Winner: KJUS Pro 3L 2.0

Those who want the best must consider the KJUS Pro 3L 2.0. The flexible shoulder blade and elbow material allow you to swing without any restriction. Hell, it feels as close to swinging with a polo on as you will get. The material used in the Pro 3L 2.0 is top-of-the-line waterproof material that makes the water run off like nothing. Another cool feature is that KJUS have a left-handed version to ensure the jacket flexes in all the right (left?) places. These are just some of the reasons why KJUS Pro 3L 2.o was joint Most Wanted Rain Gear Winner of 2022.

  • 1st in waterproofing
  • 4th in breathability
  • 5th in comfort
  • 2nd in fit

Winner: Galvin Green ACTION

Galvin Green has made top-quality rain gear for years and somehow keeps improving year after year. Their ACTION is one of the most engineered rain suits on the market. Why? The jacket is made out of GORE-TEX C-knit but has the flexibility of a polo shirt. The material has an anti-scratch concept for those who carry a bag or like to make the most of their money and find themselves in the woods for their second shot. Spine, elbow and shoulder-blade flex points as well adjustable mid-section and wrist sleeves get you totally dialed in. These are just some of the reasons why KJUS Pro 3L 2.o was joint Most Wanted Rain Gear Winner of 2022.

  • 3rd in waterproofing
  • 4th in breathability
  • 5th in comfort
  • 1st in fit
BEST VALUE JACKET - Little Donkey Andy

BEST VALUE JACKET - Little Donkey Andy

Those who just want something that helps you stay dry during those showers should look at the Little Donkey Andy. The jacket is fully waterproof and is only $50 dollars. For that price, who cares if it only lasts two seasons?

Features That Matter

Breathability

There’s golf rain gear for every climate. Those made for cooler weathr trap body heat to keep you warm while others employ vents to keep it breezy. It’s personal preference but keep your climate in mind. Do you find yourself in humidity or freezing rain? That distinction will make a difference when it comes to choosing the right golf rain gear.

Golfers who want a full rain jacket should consider Galvin Green ACTION, KJUS Dexter 2.5L and KJUS II Dexter 2.5L . The Galvin Green Armstrong is a good performer in this category as well.

Fit

Golfers come in all shapes and sizes. Fit preferences and sizing differ from region to region. Some companies cater to golfers who like the tailored or European fit. Other brands provide a more generous fit. It’s a fine line between a suit that gives you a little extra room to move and one that crosses into baggy territory.

Cross-Sportswear Edge is the best for those who like a tailored fit. Those who like it narrow but don’t want to show your dinner belly should look into KJUS Pro 3L 2.0 and Galvin Green ACTION.

BEST WATERPROOF RAIN GEAR - Galvin Green ARMSTRONG

BEST WATERPROOF RAIN GEAR - Galvin Green ARMSTRONG

Those who want the impenetrable rain suit should get the Galvin Green ARMSTRONG. It's lightweight while repels the rain and leaves you questioning "did it actually rain?" It's perfect for those summer showers and when not in use, it folds down small to help with storage.

Comfort

Unrestricted movement is critical to the golf swing and that can be a fatal flaw with some designs. Our favorites are fitted (almost tailored) while providing enough stretch to create a second-skin feel while, at the same time, keeping you dry and warm. If a rain suit doesn’t allow you to swing normally, no matter how good the weather protection, it’s doing more harm than good.

During your swing, your back flexes along with your shoulders. KJUS Gemini, KJUS Pro 3l 2.0 and KJUS II Dexter 2.5L all allow the right amount of feel during the swing.

Weather/Waterproofing

Staying dry when playing golf in wet conditions is pretty much the entire point of owning rain gear. For the most part, all of the rain suits we tested are water-resistant but only a few are truly waterproof. Others absorb water, allowing the underlayers (your clothes) to get wet. It should go without saying that the best rain suits are 100-percent waterproof.

There are rain suits that the water just beads off and that dry in seconds. Galvin Green ACTION, KJUS Pro 3L 2.0 and Galvin Green ARMSTRONG are examples of rain suits that performed well in the waterproofing category. FootJoy Hydro Tour is also great at repelling water.

EXPERT TIP - Washing Your Rain Gear Makes A Difference

It's essential to wash your rain gear after a-round in the rain. Over time, the membrane that keeps the water out will begin to break down, and your rain suit will start taking on water. Regularly wash will help ensure 100% waterproof protection and extend the life of your gear.

EXPERT TIP - Avoid Material Bunching Up

When considering your new rain suit, make sure the jacket doesn't bunch up with excess material as it can interfere with your putting grip/stroke.

More Tips

  • Golf rain gear sizing varies from brand to brand. We recommend trying on the product before buying to get the fit you want. If shopping online, look for retailers that offer free returns.
  • Choose a rain suit that doesn’t make much noise when swinging. It makes a big difference in keeping your concentration throughout your round.
  • Look for products that offer a waterproof warranty. This could save you money in the long run.
  • The best golf rain gear offers pockets similar to what you’d find in regular pants. Look for golf rain gear with a sensible number of pockets.
  • Golfers who want a rain jacket that works well for those summer showers but can fold up to a size of a sleeve of balls should looks at the KJUS II Dexter 2.5L.
  • If you play in conditions that are both wet and cold, consider rain gear that’s lined with GORE-TEX or similar material that will keep you warm as well as dry.
  • Those who play in warm and wet conditions should look for a lightweight and well-vented rain suit with plenty of ventilation.

What do I need to know about rain gear for golf?

Q: How do I wash my rain gear?

A: Materials vary from manufacturer to manufacturer which means washing instructions can differ. Take the time to read the label to ensure you’re properly caring for your suit.

Q: Do golf rain pants go over your regular shorts or pants?

A: It depends on whether you play in cold or summer conditions. Some rain pants are designed to go over pants to keep you warm while others are designed to be worn with just underwear. Galway Bay offer rain pants for above and below 50 degrees.

Q: Can I wear different layers underneath the rain gear for golf?

A: Most golfers wear their rain gear as an additional layer. To keep your swing as free as possible, minimal layering is best. Galway Bay’s offerings are designed to be worn as stand-alone pants, eliminating the need for more layers. If you can’t stand the cold and rely on layers to stay warm, consider moving up a size or purchasing a suit that runs a bit large.

Q: Why does my golf rain gear absorb water after a year of use?

A: As most golfers are probably aware, over time, most golf rain gear will stop repelling water and start absorbing it. That pretty much defeats the point of wearing it. In some cases, the rain gear just needs to be washed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If that does not work, check the warranty on the product. When all else fails, it’s time for a new rain suit.

My rain gear is made of thick leather. It’s also called my couch! In my area, it doesn’t rain that much but when it does it’s generally all day. I play a good amount of golf all year round & have been on the course many times in sub-freezing temps, but playing the rain
always has had zero appeal to me. If it starts raining & it’s not too windy, I can pattach my umbrella onto my push cart (I always walk). But especially in warmer weather, I am extremely wary of lightning, so if anything pops up that looks like a thunderstorm, I’m done, round over. I’ll just come back tomorrow.

Funny, I went to the Galvan Green website, 3 of the 5 reviews for the $700 outfit were not good.

I am amazed that Sunderland of Scotland did not rate even a mention in your testing. Years ago my pro shop persuaded me to purchase a Sunderland rain suit which I thought expensive at the time. Its proved to be my best golf equipment investment ever – and continues to be waterproof and windproof.

I’ve had a Galvin Green rain jacket for a year and it’s superior to anything I’ve worn before. It’s great when it’s windy and rainy. The big downside is the price but, having bought a cheaper rain jacket over the years, if you’re a serious golfer and hate being wet, spend the money. Get some good rain gloves as well. The advantage for the Glacin Green jacket is the breath ability. Nothing touches it.

If you play in more “sporting” conditions, think Bandon in the winter, rain gear needs to be next level. When umbrellas are a liability due to the wind, open pockets of your rain pants become funnels and hats will not stay on your head get a more robust rain jacket with a hood, You’ll be shopping outdoor and mtn gear at places like REI. I get that I may have more fortitude than most care to have but some of the best rounds of my life have been in severe weather. Yeah I also have some of the golf specific rain gear for the days when the conditions are more “pretty”. But I like my rain and wind to be an adversary not just an annoyance…..

$700 for a jacket? Sounds to me like you must be getting golden showers.
There are plenty of options at a fraction of that price. I bought a loose fitting jacket on Amazon from Columbia for $59 that keeps me bone dry. And if I wear out 10 of them I’ll still be $110 ahead.
