While BOA/DISC offerings are less common in spikeless designs, shoes with these closure systems often fit differently than the laced versions. If the laced model doesn't feel quite right, it's worth trying the BOA/DISC closure system if it’s available, but be ready to pay for it.

- Not everyone needs a ton of stability in a golf shoe. Try different shoe designs to determine what level of stability works best for you.
- If you want or need maximum stability, look for designs with “cage technology” in the mid-foot section. It’s common in traditional spiked shoes but companies have begun adding stability-enhancing components to their spikeless designs.
- Depending on the manufacturer, sizes can vary. If you can’t try them on, check the company’s sizing sheet to ensure you get the size you need.
- Whether you choose spiked or spikeless, have your foot measured to ensure you’re buying the proper size.

Best Spikeless Golf Shoes of 2022 – FAQ
Q: How much should I spend on a shoe?
A: While it’s possible to find a well-designed, fully featured golf shoe for around $80, the majority of top performers sell for around $150. Golfers who play just a few times a year may be able to find a suitable option for less. Never skimp on comfort to save a buck.
Q: Do professional golfers wear spikeless shoes?
A: Yes. More and more professionals are wearing spikeless shoes but many pros wear metal and rubber spike combos.
Q: What is the main feature to look for in a spikeless shoe?
A: Comfort is by far the most important factor, followed by traction. Stability is also an important consideration but different golfers require different levels of stability. Only after you have those three considerations covered should style factor into the decision.
Q: Is BOA/DISC technology better than laces?
A: Use of BOA and DISC technology is less prevalent in spikeless designs. Some golfers prefer modern closure systems to traditional laces but it’s certainly not a universal preference. Users of BOA and DISC report a tendency for their shoes to loosen throughout a round. Although it’s not a big deal to re-tighten, who wants to worry about it? Also consider that if a shoelace breaks, it’s easily replaceable whereas warranty replacements for other closure systems can take some time.

7 months agoStay away from the Payntr 002x. They are great out of the box but don’t last. I’ve only played about 15 rounds and they are starting to fall apart. Very first round the mesh on the tongue got dirty and it is impossible to clean underneath so that area is permanently stained with dirt. Also run very small, at least one size or 1.5. Obviously MGS did t do long term testing because if they did they would rank way lower. I’d return the shoes if I could.

7 months agoYou do some great reviews but never seem to realise that a product of interest may have no UK representation. I made reference sometime back to trolley winter wheels that are a requirement for many courses in the UK.. Where shoes are concerned there has to be a retail outlet to try for size and comfort and not get penalised with return charges. I refer here to your review specifically on the Payntr product.

7 months agoI can tell you that the FOOTJOY DRYJOYS PREMIERE FIELD discussed in this article are the best shoes I’ve ever bought from FJ. I LOVE the classic look, very comfortable, cleans up nice. I have black and white. I like them so much I bought a 2nd pair of the black, I’ll do same for white and have two pairs of each. I like them that much. I have a wide foot, and bought x-wide in 1/2 size larger and they fit perfect. I’m 61, so I don’t want to look like a aging hipster idiot wearing fancy colored shoes – these are for me!!!!

7 months agoNo True LinksWear OG’s. ??? Granted its just one man’s opinion but the OG style of True LinksWear are the best of the spikeless golf shoes. The sport models you tested are fine. But in my opinion they are far inferior to the OG styles.
The zero drop and wide toe boxes in the OG’s makes them a no brainer. Plus again, in my opinion the OG’s have way better grip than the sport models.
I’m a shoe hound and have many pairs, but my 3 pair of True Linkswear OG’s are far in a way the best I have. I always go to them if I’m going to be walking the course.

10 months agoI bought the Payntr after reading the MGS study and they are fantastic shoes. I happen to be a big dude with big feet so finding shoes that are comfortable, water resistant and durable can be difficult. I also like products that are well made and I’ll pay a little extra if it means I get a quality item. The Paytr check all the boxes for me and I would recommend them to anyone.

10 months agoGood article. I found both Nike & Sketcher Golf shoes do not hold up (Sketchers lasted 3 months walking 3 times week for 3 months) & poor warranty service. Ecco & New Balance have the best warranty service, in my opinion, and their shoes are more durable. Very pleased with FootJoy Pro SL & Flex shoes, although Flex shoes not good for morning rounds of golf in FL, too much morning dew, shoes aren’t waterproof.. Looking forward to trying SQAIRZ shoes this summer, for comfort & waterproof.

10 months agoYes, they are not true to size. I initially ordered a size 12 and sent them back for a 13 (no 12 1/2). The 13s are much better. I’m not sure how the wide sizes fit but definitely order a half size up (if possible).

10 months agoReally? Never heard of Payntrs and absolutely love my 4th pair of Ecco’s that I just bought. (Biom x-hybrid).. FJ’s are decent on stability but challenge my high instep and wide foot.

12 months agoGreat information! I learned a lot! However, I’m a little disappointed Lady’s golf shoes were not included in the study. Brand name women’s shoes fit very differently on us than the same brand on men. A case in point: You list men’s Puma as a half size large when I find the ladies’ Puma can be a full size too small, and ladies UA can be a full size too large. (depending on style).. I would have also liked to see the difference in sole wear, Some spikeless shoes are soon just a pair of glorified tennis shoes. In my opinion, Ecco will last the longest. BTW I have at least 30 pairs of golf shoes. Yeah, I know, that’s a little over the top, but did you know that lady golfers own on average 10 pairs of golf shoes?!! #LoveMyGolfSpy

12 months agoWondering about waterproofing of Payntr 002X tongue. It looks breathable and wondering if it will let water in. I know a lot of these companies have waterproof mesh, but with these being so new, I am very interested if the entire shoe is waterproof. I have seen reviews of the 001F that when water is poured onto the tongue your feet get soaked.

1 year agoOf all the golf shoes I’ve ever worn….Adidas, Nike, G-fore, FootJoy, For me, the 2020 Adidas Code Chaos (as far as performance and comfort) are the best of the bunch. It’s unfortunate that Adidas ruined the 2021 version.
I walk a lot and these shoes are still performing the best, two seasons later.
I noticed D. Berger is also still sporting the same 2020 shoes. Hopefully, Adidas will bring them back in their original form.

1 year agoI started wearing Skechers sneakers about a year ago and love them. Never had a shoe before with as good cushioning. So, when I needed new golf shoes last fall and a friend recommended Skechers GO GOLF Elite – Tour SL, I bought a pair, even though they only were available on line from the Skechers web site. Absolutely love them. Wonderful cushioning for walking the course.

1 year agoWith the supply chain issues. My big box store hasn’t had golf shoes in a brand and size for me. So I went to a running shoe store to see if they had anything close to a spike less golf shoe. I ended up with Saucony Peregrine Trail shoe. with spikes that could match up with shoe. Great fit and comfort.

1 year agoWhen I pulled up the best spiked shoe page I was surprised to see the Tour 360 22 being on there considering their comments about it being considered spikeless. Had to come back here to see if I was misremembering and I wasn’t.
It’s okay to mess up and have the shoes in the wrong category but to try and wipe it without acknowledging it seems silly and juvenile. Just admit you screwed up and direct them to the spiked review. All good.

1 year agoThe lack of wide and extra wide shoes is body shaming I tell you! But in all seriousness, there is a lack of support for folks with larger than “M” feet, such as myself. It’s not just in golf, but it really makes for a less than enjoyable experience when your shoes are too tight or they don’t have the proper traction to help your game.

1 year agoI feel your pain X 2: not only do most brands not offer wide, many also stop at size 13. I wear a 14 W and usually have to end up “settling” for what I can find, not what I want.

12 months agoMost all Ecco golf shoes are a little wider b/c they believe the most stability comes from your own foot. If your toes can’t spread, the shoe may be too narrow. Ecco places a removable shoe insert inside for those who need a wider shoe. The sole is finished fully and very comfortable. Also, most of their shoes have a 2-year warranty covering everything. Their polymer soles last longer than rubber soles and are heat-fused onto the shoe for fewer delamination problems and make the shoe more waterproof.. Buy the BOA for optimal comfort.

12 months agoI’ll second the Ecco for wide feet. I have the biom 4s in sz 10 with the insole taken out to make them wider and they are perfect. I’m usually an 11 and I ordered the payntr 001f in sz 11 wide and they are wide everywhere but the toe box which seems uniquely pinched in on both sides of the toes and seem short as well. Quite possibly the most uncomfortable golf shoes I’ve ever tried on. They seemed well made but when it costs money to ship them back for a different size I’ll just stick with the bioms that treated me extremely well last season.

1 year agoThe Adidas Tour 360 do not have removable spikes, that’s my guess why they are in the spikeless list. But I would consider both the Adidas Tour 360 22 and the Nike Infinity Tour shoes to be spiked.

1 year agoGauging comfort & durability for those that walk is not being factored in. At 6’2″ & 220lbs, I walk the courses 4 times a week….Which is why I wear On Cloud trail shoes, They are comfortable all 18 holes, they clean easily, they last, and the provide great traction. If you walk, think about buying a shoe from a great shoe company & not from a golf company that also sells shoes

1 year agoYou should judge based on waterproof v non-waterproof or water resistant. That’s a huge factor when selecting shoes especially if you’re an early morning walker. Paynter is a beautiful shoe with a great fit but they are only water resistant.

1 year agoThe X 002 LE isn’t available yet, so we’ll have to wait and how good its waterproofing is. If you like the comfort of the Payntr shoes but are worried about waterproofing, you should possibly look at the model X 001 F. From another review of the shoe: “Payntr X 001 F has excellent waterproofing. The shoe is treated with a superhydrophobic solution called NeverWet. That means water not only stays out of the shoe, it beads and rolls off immediately.” From my real-world experience, my feet have never gotten wet when wearing them whether from heavy early morning dew or that surprise afternoon pop-up rain shower.

1 year agoI choose based on comfort #1 and style #2. Golf shoes are the worse for style/fashion. Several times I see a pair I like but then they turn out to be women’s. Comfort is #1 everything else doesn’t matter if not comfortable. And comfort is individual to each person as feet vary from person to person (most hard to rate) What is comfortable to one is not comfortable to another.

I purchase a pair of PAYNTR 002X based on this article and walked 18 holes and my feet were killing my after 12 holes. The only way to determine if a shoe is comfortable is to play a round in them and find out for your self..

1 year agoI transitioned to spikeless shoes, three years ago. However, if you only use them for golf only the cleats wear off. For me comfort trumps over looks.. I bought Saucony trail sneaker and Schechers slipon ( wide) with mesh, good traction and lightweight ( $30 ea.).. I then take out my rotary tool with a circular mini saw and make perpendicular cuts (not too deep) to the shoe’s grooves.. I golf twice a week ( I still work for living) and they work just fine. When I travel, l will use them for leisure and golf. After a couple of seasons,. I buy new ones.

1 year agoYou missed a great (for comfort and grip) shoe FJ Superlites XP. I have a almost new pair of Pro SL and the Superlites are far better and at half the price.

1 year agoIs there a mistake with the FJ Premiere Field? They are listed as being the “Top Performer in Comfort”, but in the data results shows they “placed” 10th in comfort.

1 year agoI’ve got a shoe thing. I always like traditional but FootJoy NEVER fit my feet and I’ve tried W & EW. Then I went thru numerous pairs of ADIDAS spikes then no spikes and most fit well out of the box but did have an issue with heel wear as I walk a lot. Then, ECCO……the best shoe for my foot. 5 pairs now (2 BIOM H4, 1 Hybrid S, 2 leather tennis shoe style). I WORK all day in the leather tennis shoe spikeless on my feet and the quality is exceptionally high. The BIOMs look like “Dad” shoes but are my #1 hoofering the hilly course shoes while the Hybrid is great cart & range day shoe. Still like the traditional styles of the 360/Boosts and many FJ’s but comfort and function win. There are a lot of UGLY shoes on the market, not going to wear them.

1 year agoLove the testing but I agree, spike less need 1 more test. Spike durability. We end up walking on cart paths etc with them and some soft spikes grind down quickly. Since they can’t be replaced that shoes traction dies quickly.

12 months agoEmery, your comments are what I hear a lot. Addidas are very comfortable, but heels tend to wear out, especially if they are knit and not leather. (Maybe talk to your Store or Addidas about that problem. You are very correct about Ecco. ‘Great shoe on and off the course, but Dad shoes are a fashion problem.

1 year agoHarry: I have to say that y’all are spot on in this year’s evaluation. I bought a pair of Payntr 001F when they first launched last spring based solely on the reputation of the 2 men behind the brand. They were such a fantastic surprise that I bought a second pair last summer in a different colorway. They are the most comfortable golf shoe I own. They have excellent year-round traction and with the new 002X full leather model, I see myself buying another pair. I was an Adidas Tour 360 customer for a long time, but those are now religated to my locker as backups. As you point out, the only negative is the limited colorway options. Hopefully, Payntr will fix that soon.

As always, thanks for the work involved. I still don’t think elements/style should be involved in the scores. Style in a shoe is totally subjective just likes looks & feel in a golf club. Just give us the facts, Jack! (or Harry in this case)

1 year agoIt would be nice to include a category or review for wide sizes. Few of the top choices come in wide sizes.

1 year agoDisappointed Sketchers Arch Fit shoes weren’t included as they are the most comfortable and supportive spikeless golf shoes I’ve experienced.

1 year agoThe name of the shoe is Skechers GO GOLF Max 2 Golf Shoes and the were the Best Value selection. Arch Fit is the tech the use not the model.

1 year agoDon’t see how you can really rate comfort–everyone’s feet are different and comfort may vary with age, weight, and presence or absence of orthopedic or podiatric issues. Your statement about BOA loosening seeming to be a problem is ridiculous–if they loosen a bit during a round-just a quick twist of the BOA takes care of it. (Tell me that laces don’t loosen??)

1 year agoI recently purchased a pair of True Links Wear True OG and I have to say I am very happy with them thus far. I wear Altra running shoes (zero drop) and I have really gotten used to having a wider toe box. The True Links are what I imagine Altra would make if it made a golf shoe. I will say, if you play in wet conditions a lot, the True OG is not the style to get as it has a mesh upper that provides no protection from moisture. If however, you play in desert-like conditions as I do, they work great. For reference, my go-to golf show previously was the Adidas Tour 360’s but I would wear out the heel in them in less than a year.
