Does Zero Torque Even Matter If You’re Already A Great Putter?

The 2026 Most Wanted Putter test covered 79 putters across three categories: blades, mallets, zero torque. When the data settled, the category story was hard to argue with.

Zero torque averaged -6.29 PuttView handicap across 26 putters. Mallets came in at -3.99 across 29. Blades finished last at -2.65 across 24. That’s a 2.3-stroke gap between zero torque and the next best category.

The category verdict is straightforward: zero torque performed better and it wasn’t particularly close. However, I wanted to look a little deeper at the individual player level. No players had blade as their best overall category and only two had mallet as their best.

The best putter in the test still improved

These are the averages of the best putter in the test across all three categories. Zero torque was technically his best category but his spread between worst and best category was just 1.49 strokes.

CategoryAvgPool MeanBest vs Pool
Blade-8.26-2.47+5.79 better
Mallet-9.11-3.80+5.31 better
Zero Torque-9.75-6.57+3.18 better

Zero torque still moves the needle, even for good putters

Another strong putter in the test had a blade average of -6.09 and a mallet average of -5.22.

Zero torque pushed him to -10.97. It was the lowest single-category average in the entire tester pool. That’s a 5.75-stroke swing from his blade average to ZT, nearly four times the gap the best putter in the test experienced across the same three categories.

Both players are good putters. One has something in his stroke and technique that zero-torque putters are built to change or improve.

TesterBladeMalletZero TorqueZT Swing
Tester A -8.26-9.11-9.751.49 strokes
Tester B-6.09-5.22-10.974.88 strokes

So does zero torque matter if you’re already great?

Zero torque was the best performing category in the test. When you get to the player level, the gap between what zero torque does for one player versus another can change. The bottom line is that both players (who were already good putters) got better. Your stroke and technique are always going to come into play. If you haven’t gone for a putter fitting or experimented with different putters recently, it’s probably worth a try to see how much of an impact it has on your game.

Sooooooo…. If the data is this clear, why are the top pros still using blades?
Nelly just won, with a blade.
She would be winning every tournament if she used a ZT, based on the data, correct?

Many of the pros use mallets and ZT putters. And a lot of pros use stiff shafts and low loft drivers. Doesn’t mean it’s good for the rest of us.

Same reason they use blade irons & high-spin balls. They’re comfortable with them.

Please add data on Lab Link 2.1 & 2.2 to the 2026 review of ZT putter. We can’t wait until next season to know.

I have a hate-hate relationship with my putters. I have 2 mallets and a modern blade. The brand and models aren’t important. For the last 4 weeks my putting has been horrible no matter what I used; even though in the past I putted well with all of them. In the last 4 weeks I’ve played 8 rounds of golf and in those rounds I’ve had anywhere from 3-8 three putts per round. Before then 2 three putts was a bad round. So Last Friday i pulled out my antique(60 years old) Bullseye w/flange. First club I ever bought with my own money when I was 13. For 18 holes I had 4 1 putts (2 from 30 feet, 1 from 20 and 1 from 10). Had 1 three putt; from 75 feet. Best putting day in months. WTF?

Take your current putters that aren’t working with you & go to any big box store. Try some of their putters. Caress them. Hold them close to you & smile at them, then leave. Your current putters will get the message that they’re expendable. It’s worked for me in the past!

Hi Brittany. How did testers with an arc stroke that might show the need for toe hang fair with the ZT putter? Was a blade better from them or was the ZT still better? Thanks!

Hey Brittany, were there any putters that showed the inverse? I’d love to see if yes, how many.

Seeing all the putters and the data would be interesting.

      Thanks!

Plenty of ZT options in the $200 space. Certainly worth a try.

TOTALLY agree. No reason to automatically assume you need to drop $500+ on a ZT putter anymore. I went ZT 3 years ago. I did buy a different model after my 1st year, but I’m totally sold on the ZT concept.
