To learn more about how testers are selected, go to this forum thread: Want to be a tester?

The Testing Opportunity

One of our first testing opportunities of 2023 was for the Red Rooster Sussex Premium Golf Glove. At the time of testing, this glove had not been released to retail and was available only to our selected members and a handful of beta testers for Red Rooster.

Red Rooster released the Sussex glove publicly on June 28 so it is available for purchase now.

The Red Rooster Sussex is meant to be an ultra-premium glove boasting outstanding feel and control with thin Cabretta leather.

Selected members were provided with two Red Rooster Sussex gloves for testing as well as a virtual fitting with Red Rooster to ensure they got the best fitting glove for them.

With the fittings done and the Sussex golf glove on the hands of our testers, let’s dive in to see what they had to say about the glove and experience.

The Reviews and Insights

Whether it is a golf ball, driver, shoes or golf glove, how something feels or fits immediately is key to getting comfortable with the equipment. This is why we wanted to know from our member testers what their first impressions of the Red Rooster Sussex Glove were. Here is what they had to say.

From Swood1994

“This glove screams tour/player’s glove. Very simplistic ALL leather with just a touch of red for the logo. I was a huge fan as soon as I opened the box. A big selling point for me is customer service, as it is for most people. Having a handwritten note from the Red Rooster team was really cool and shows they care about their customers and value this test.”

That wasn’t the only comment which had our testers impressed at first glance.

From EasyPutter:

“The Red Rooster box itself is something that speaks of quality from first appearance. It is not a standard shipping container and announces itself as something to be noticed with its iconic branding.

The gloves provided were 2 of the Sussex gloves we are testing. It is all leather with a snug comfortable fit, fine smooth leather with all stitching where it is supposed to be leaving nothing hanging loose or evident anywhere along the seams inside or out. Comfortable from first try-on.”

Overall first impressions from all of our testers were positive and meant this member test was off to a good start. That being said, it wouldn’t be a true review if we only went on first impressions.

Our member testers played several rounds with the Red Rooster Sussex glove to test durability, fit over time and performance in a variety of conditions.

Here is what they had to say about the various categories they were asked to rate.

From IndyBonzo:

“Being fit into the Sussex glove was a revelation. Like most if not all of the other testers, I was apparently wearing a glove that was too big. Using the Red Rooster sizing chart, and with several try-ons in the pro shop, I ended up going down several sizes from what I had been wearing. And the fit is fantastic now.

But it’s not just about the size. The Sussex fits like a second skin. Some gloves I have tried have an odd finger that’s too long, or can be tight at a seam and loose across a span. Not the Sussex.

The leather itself defines the Sussex. Buttery soft and thin (but not flimsy), the Sussex enabled me to grip a club with no fear of slipping whatsoever, even when damp. After five rounds and some pre-game range time, the grip remained tacky, and I detected no slickness. I have played the high-end gloves made of Cabretta leather from other makers, and the Sussex feels better to me.”

Red Rooster Sussex after 14 rounds

On the course, the Red Rooster Sussex left good impressions and performance all around as mentioned by Stuka44:

“I will say that the Red Rooster performs very well on the course. I had no issues where I felt the glove allowed the club to slip in my hand. I also found that the glove was quite cool. Even in the Carolinas it was quite cool, and didn’t sweat up very quickly.”

There was a lot of talk and discussion about the overall durability of the Sussex as it is an ultra-premium, ultra-soft glove.

Our Member Indy Bozo said this in his final review:
“Most surprising was the durability of the Sussex. After ninety holes, the Sussex still fits tightly, remains tacky, shows no signs of excessive wear or tear and no slipperiness even at primary grip contact points.”

The Final Verdict

We asked our member testers to rate these gloves out of 100. When all the reviews were completed, the grades ranged from 89 to 99. Impressive.

All six testers said they would play this glove in the future and several have made it their go-to glove.

The glove is an often overlooked part of any golfer’s game but, given the feedback from our member testers, the Red Rooster is well worth checking out.

I’ve played lots of gloves – the best was a Titleist directly from the tour when a buddy ran the locker room at Torrey Pines but use the MG’s because they are a bargain l. I don’t think they wear as well or as long as the top quality gloves but they are still more cost effective 2 or 3 for one. The fancy dressing & notes aren’t required buying a consumable golf product but fittings might be nice. My hands are thicker than they were 40!years ago.

My one and only go to glove for years has been Fit39. As far as I know you can only get these online, https://www.fit39glove.com/. They are, for me at least, the most comfortable glove ever. They are extremely durable and are great in hot sweaty conditions. I never found them to get stiff or lose their fit when you dig them out of your bag. They also come in a variety of colors if you are into that. Price is around $16. I have never seen these gloves in any reviews of best golf gloves but would love to see how they hold up with MYGOLFSPY.

I know the price may be considered to be high or simply is too much for some. However I want to say these are in a different category all together. The grip, tack and feel are unlike anything I have used before. Period. Of course the price may be too high for some, no problem. RR does have others in their lineup that are also excellent. These are a premium made glove that are meant to go up against the best and in that I think RR succeeded. Not take anything away from other gloves as they also work, but if you do get a chance to try a sussex from RR I would highly recommend it!

I’m looking for a “very” hot weather glove. I live in a hot and humid area of Texas. My Callaway glove has perforations in the palm, which stays fairly dry, but the back of the glove sweats like crazy and while I air dry it before putting it away, it’s stiff. So, no more Callaways.
As far as MG gloves, mentioned in the comments above, I had a fit issue (crazy long ring finger) and they would not allow a return. So, no MG’s. My Bionics work well, as do my zero friction. I’d love to try Red Rooster, but my pro shop doesn’t carry them, and the reviews seem to recommend getting fitted. But, it’s primarily my goal to find a good fitting, breathable glove. Would love to have some suggestions.

I believe all of the testers did a virtual fitting with Red Rooster. RR is extremely responsive as a company and is more than willing to work with individuals over the phone. Kerry from RR was actually a guest speaker on one of our weekly forum community calls and that was a very informative session. If you’re not yet a member on the forum, create an account and ask the testers questions as well. They are all great guys and would be more than happy to answer questions if I had to guess

I get my gloves from Master Grip. They sell at least 3 models and even when not on sale, they are $7.99. Get on email list and you can get better deals. Also you can get them personalized for $1.00. They are as soft and durable as any FJ, Titleist, or name brand glove. They also have a fitting chart on the website and mine fit perfectly. At the low price, they are worth a try.

Lloyd, you need to check out some of the “rain” gloves. There are various kinds, and you need to test them, as they are not all the same, but that’s probably the way to go, you need to act as if you’re playing in the rain when everything gets wet.
Don’t use normal leather gloves. Get rain gloves. I do this in the humidity myself. It works fine. But you have to find the one that works for your hand, obviously.

Agree with the other poster here about the rain glove option- FootJoy makes them in white too, so it doesn’t scream “rain glove” and it has the added benefit of being able to be thrown in the wash. I used to use them but I thought they weren’t always the “best” grip, so ended up switching to the FootJoy “TropiCool” glove, which is a bit of a hybrid and is the best I’ve found for my super sweaty hands. Breaths really well, and dries quickly.

Five (5) rounds? Five? I only buy MG golf gloves & they last a heck of a lot longer than 5 rounds!

Some dude said “after 5 rounds” in the review up above, so I was commenting on that 🤷🏻‍♂️

What they are packed in should not be of concern . That doesn’t make the glove better or worse .
The glove is over priced , and fancy packages adds nothing to me liking the glove . I give it a three for overpriced and expecting packaging matters .

I have never seen a glove yet 100 percent leather and last . This one doesn’t either.

Have been buying Red Rooster gloves for over two years now. Only problem is that they don’t seem to wear out.
The fit is very good and they do not stretch out of shape. They are durable. The synthetic Range Rooster is terrific. I still have and use the one from over a year ago.

Sounds like a great glove. However I can get 4 gloves from MG golf for the cost of a single Red Rooster.

I agree. Master Grip golf gloves (MG Golf) are as soft and well fitting and durable as anything else I have tried and are a small fraction of the price of every other full Cabretta leather glove, except Kirkland Signature. I am trying Kirkland now, but two rounds in and the Kirkland is going getting rather worn. Gloves are a no brainer. MG Golf Elite or MG regular Cabretta. Maybe the K Sig, if it turns out as durable as the MG.

You guys stole my thunder! I’ve been wearing MG gloves for 2 years now and you cannot beat the quality and value.

These gloves scream “buy me”. A $26 glove screams…”absolutely nothing” to me.
