What is a Sunday bag” Why do you need one? They’re basically mini-stand bags perfect for practice or a leisurely round at a par-3 course. If “Sunday” is designated as a day of rest, then “Sunday bags” are the perfect way to rest those weary shoulders and tired legs.

Lighter and smaller than a typical stand bag, Sunday bags generally house fewer clubs, too. Even still, some of the modern Sunday bags have started to encroach upon stand bag territory. Sound confusing? It can be. That’s why our expert staff spent hours testing 11 different Sunday bags.

Best Overall Sunday Bags

What separates a Sunday bag from bags in the stand and cart categories? Size. Whether the bag has a stand or not, a Sunday bag is typically much smaller than its counterparts.

Because the category of Sunday bags is so broad, it can be hard to find the right fit for your game. Maybe you want a stand? Maybe you don’t. Do you need a single carry strap or double backpack-style straps? That depends. Is a pencil bag the same thing as a Sunday bag? Kinda.

That’s where we come in. Our expert testing staff has done the legwork for you. We’ve compared, contrasted and tested 11 of the most popular Sunday bags in order to give you the lay of the land. Hours of testing and careful examination has brought us some clarity. Here are the best Sunday bags, tested and reviewed by objective experts.

Tester Feedback

Testers loved the small footprint and overall weight. Most liked the storage but said a bigger bag would have offered more.

Expert Take

Think a pencil bag is too small for your game? Think again. Sunday Golf’s new Loma for 2024 takes full advantage of its tiny frame. With best-in-class zippers and a massive frosty pocket, there’s no better range companion.

How to Choose a Sunday Bag

Sunday bags are the hardest to test and review. That’s because no two Sunday bags are exactly alike. Some have full stands, other’s half-sized mini stands. Some don’t have a stand at all. Don’t get me started on size and weight. Some Sunday bags are basically stand bags while others can only hold three clubs before they become unusable.

Despite the overall fogginess surrounding the Sunday bag category, there are a few key things to consider when you’re on the hunt for a new Sunday bag.

Walkability

A Sunday bag should be easy to carry but walkability or comfort is more than just weight. While a lighter Sunday bag will be inherently easy to carry, a bag with well-designed straps and balanced weight placement will be better to walk with overall.

It’s important to note that while double carry straps are generally better for walking, a plush single strap can work as well. Something like the Penfold Sunday Stand Bag is great, despite its single-strap system.

Dual-strap bags like the Callaway Par 3 and Vessel Sunday III provide excellent walkability. Not only were the straps comfortable but the overall weighting kept them perfectly balanced.

Storage

A Sunday bag isn’t designed to carry the kitchen sink. Even still, larger Sunday bags are naturally more versatile thanks to their copious pockets and spacious storage.

Storage is also where the Sunday bag category has the most disparity. It’s hard to compare the Sunday Golf Loma, a pencil-style bag, to the Vessel Sunday III. One is designed to have a larger footprint with much more storage while the other is designed to be minimalist.

That said, the option for more storage and, thus, room for more accessories and gear is a good thing overall. While a Sunday bag doesn’t necessarily need room for a dozen balls, a rangefinder, rain gear and snacks, having enough room to check off at least two of those items is helpful.

If you want a Sunday bag with storage closer to that of a stand bag, the Vessel Sunday III and the Penfold Sunday Stand are solid options. As far as pencil bags, the Sunday Golf Loma blows the competition out of the water in the storage department.

Stand System

I mentioned Sunday bag stands are all over the place. Some have full-sized stands similar to a typical stand bag. Other’s have what I like to call “Corgi” stands because they have little legs.

While the addition of legs to any Sunday bag is welcome, those with full-sized stands are generally better for a myriad of reasons. First and foremost, a full stand makes the bag much more accessible. A half-stand makes retrieving clubs more of an ordeal.

The other reason a full stand is generally superior is that it actuates automatically when placed on the ground. The small stand systems must be manually opened and closed.

A Few Features Worth Checking Out

  • Water bottle pockets. The best Sunday bags have room for a beverage. Can’t be getting dehydrated at the course!
  • Zippers. You don’t realize how important a good zipper is until you have one that breaks.
  • Straps. Do you prefer a single strap or double strap? Give both a try before you buy.
  • Dividers. Most Sunday bags have two or three dividers. This isn’t a dealbreaker because they’re designed to hold fewer clubs than a typical stand or cart bag.

Key Findings

1. Legs to Stand On

As mentioned, Sunday bags are outfitted with very different stand systems. Some are full-sized, others much smaller. Of the bags we tested, two had no stand at all. Six had full-stands and three had the “Corgi” style mini stands.

2. Sunday or Stand?

Sunday bags are putting on weight. Each year, they get bigger and bigger. Something like the Vessel Sunday III or Penfold Sunday Stand start to blur the lines between the Sunday and stand bag categories.

3. Room for Five

Sunday bags aren’t designed to carry a full set of clubs. Most will have room for about five clubs, give or take a few depending on size.

How We Test Sunday Bags

In true MyGolfSpy style, we went deep into testing. Sunday bags were put through a series of protocols and tests by our team to ensure each was rated according to performance. We spent extensive, hands-on time with each Sunday bag in order to determine the overall winner.

  • Weight: All bags are weighed and scored from lowest weight to heaviest.
  • Walkability: Sunday bags are tested for comfort and balance when walking.
  • Storage: The total number of pockets does matter but so does the amount of useable storage. Do the pockets open wide or do they take up too much space? Finding the right balance of pockets and storage is key.
  • Dividers: Dividers are rated based on smoothness. A divider that catches or pulls on a club grip is scored lower than one that allows for a smooth retrieval of a club. A divider’s shape and overall design are also taken into account.
  • Features: This takes into account extra features like the water bottle pocket, insulated pockets and more. Most Sunday bags lack a ton of extra features, due to their minimalist nature.

I really like my Shapland Sunday bag. The classic design with leather reinforcement and quiver carry system really sets it apart. It does not have legs but I don’t want the added weight when I’m out for a leisurely nine.

So, I would still consider my MacKenzie Walkers as Sunday bags–you have not reviewed, not my Ping Moonlite. If your gonna review, review them all !
A pencil bag is useless. Don’t even talk to me unless a bag will hold a full set of 14.

I really despise the name “sunday bag”. I play golf every sunday and I have no idea why I wouldn’t use my full bag every time.

I have a first generation olimar. The open handle great for hanging over my cart bag when i ride then i can use it to carry carry three clubs out onto the fairway on cart path only days. Also keeps you from leaving your chipper on the green when yuo finish putting. I call my old man bag.
