Shaft selection is a key ingredient to any golf club purchase. In the super game-improvement iron category, graphite shaft options dominate. Why? Well, super game-improvement irons typically utilize lighter-weight components to maximize performance. After all, the target market is the golfer who struggles to hit iron shots with optimum launch conditions and descent angles.
Super game-improvement irons focus more on forgiveness and accuracy than distance. There are a few irons in this category that offer impressive distance potential. However, sometimes distance comes at the sake of accuracy and forgiveness. You must determine which performance attributes best fit your golf game and needs.
Most sets of super game-improvement irons won’t break your bank, even though most come stock with graphite shafts. Generally, you’ll see a $100 price difference between steel and graphite iron sets. The PING G430 HL has the highest retail price at $1,188.25 for a seven-piece set. Most of the other offerings are around $1,000 or less.
To determine this year’s best super game-improvement, 20 testers hit a total of 6,720 shots. Throughout the testing process, testers hit the 5-iron, 7-iron and pitching wedge from each participating model.
We limit variables by collecting data using Titleist ProV1 as our official testing golf ball and Foresight GCQuad as our official ball launch monitor.
Q: How often should I buy new irons?
A: While on rare occasions there are quantifiable year-over-year breakthroughs, typically it takes three to five years for manufacturers to make significant performance gains. With the USGA further tightening restrictions on manufacturers, it’s possible, even likely, that it will take longer still moving forward. Our recommendation is to buy new irons only when they appreciably outperform what is already in your bag. Of course, if you want new irons because you want new irons, that’s fine, too.
Q: How do I determine the right category of irons for me?
A: The four categories of irons we test are player’s (cavity-backs), player’s distance, game-improvement and super game-improvement. While there is some overlap between categories, your search should begin with an honest assessment of your skill level (handicap) as well as what you need in your game. While there are always exceptions, if your handicap is above 10 and ball striking is not a legitimate strength, we’d recommend avoiding the player’s iron category. For more skilled players who hit the ball more consistently, a set of player’s or player’s distance irons may benefit your game the most. For those on the bubble, especially for those seeking a few more yards, the player’s distance category is typically the most versatile.
Q: Does the shaft matter?
A: Absolutely. While changes to spin and launch differences are rarely massive, shaft changes frequently lead to improved accuracy, tighter dispersion and greater overall consistency. Finding the right shaft and dialing in your lie angles is reason enough to get fitted.
Q: What should I look for when testing irons?
A: While golfers have been conditioned to consider distance to the exclusion of nearly everything else, even within the super game-improvment iron category we recommend looking at the little numbers and looking for small circles. When comparing metrics like distance and ball speed, be sure to look at your standard deviations (the small numbers usually found under the big ones on the launch monitor data screen). Smaller numbers mean better consistency which will usually mean more than an extra yard or two on the golf course. Similarly, look for tighter dispersion ellipses (small circles). We can’t overstate the importance of consistency with irons.
Q: How are the irons in the test fitted to each golfer?
A: We use a fitting process that we call fit from stock. Irons are fitted to each tester using the stock, no up-charge options from each manufacturer. We test one short iron, one mid iron and one long iron from each set. While there are no irons in our testing that feature adjustability, we fit to flex for each tester in the pool. Occasionally, manufacturers will send multiple sets with different stock shafts that we can utilize to improve launch conditions.
Q: How do you determine in which category to test a given set of irons?
A: To ensure that we’re testing irons as alike as designers allow for, in addition to the design of the head itself (profile, sole width, etc.), we sort by length and loft. Our goal is to keep differences as minimal as possible within any test cohort. When an iron reasonably fits in more than one category, we defer to the manufacturer’s category choice.
Q: How are the Best Super Game-Improvement Irons determined?
A: To determine our rankings, we collect key performance metrics with Foresight GCQuad Launch Monitors. After eliminating outliers, we utilize a proprietary methodology to calculate overall scores for three key metrics: accuracy, forgiveness and distance. Come on MyGolfSpy staff. You’re smart people, surely you can come up with a way to measure distance based upon the degrees of loft.
Only then can you make some sort of distance assessment since there is no standard for a 7-iron’s loft.
You hear this comment in almost every new iron review, you can do better than this and your legions of fans and supporters expect it.

Static loft is far too narrow a measurement to use as a definitive predictor of distance. You have to account for all the components of the design, not the least of which are mass properties/CG location. Then there’s sole width, face thickness, internal structures, etc.
I get that plenty of golfers think that less loft = more distance and that’s the end of the story. But it isn’t.
Side note – Last week Tony and I hit four different models of irons….and for both of us, the one with strongest loft had the highest peak height.
Dynamics matter. Static measurements are easy fodder for debate, but the best way to test for distance is to put the clubs in the hands of real golfers and see what happens.

Thanks but the Big Bertha 7i at 27* vs the JPX 923 HL at 31*, for example, is not really apples to apples.

Ping G430 standard is 29 and Power Spec is 27.5.
Even doing just that comparison on here would be enough to show you what would happen.

Sorry but after owning MIZUNO JPX 921 and the Tour Edge 523 I was fortunate enough to try XXIO’s and found the air I needed. I was so impressed that I then added the Driver, 5FW and 4 Hybrid. Wow. I’m a 15 year HS golf coach ( Girls State Champions 2023) and after a car wreck that put pins in my back and the GBS at 69 I lost my swing speed. I tried the TE 523’s for 6 months but couldn’t master them. Turned out same hole I was using a 6 iron Tour Edge was a pitching wedge with the XXIO’s. Amazing height . Expensive but worth every penny. Hope this helps. Ps bought them through Curated.com because they had a 14 day return policy. Ask for Chris you might get a discount if you give them my name.

Throw out the distance metric if you are buying new irons. It’s near meaningless because there are different lofts on many of these clubs. A 5 iron in one will be a 5-1/2 or 6 iron in others. The only time distance matters is at the “top” of the set. Those “spots” can be filled with a hybrid or 2 or a high lofted fairway wood. You can re-rank these sets by only using the forgiveness and accuracy metrics.

Lots of good data to really informative. Question, when you say the stealth HD irons are low in the distance criteria, could it be that there lofts are 1 to 1.5° weaker than the other clubs tested?

Another great article with tons of useful information.
I would like to see every SGII and GII all start with one of the most ignored phrase in golf, “get fitted and don’t just buy off the rack.” After that phrase, a link to a MSG article why golfers in this category should be fitted. Obviously, the better players already understand the value of a fitting. I know this is buried in the question, how are the testers fitted. I’m guessing many beginners are not aware that they have several choices when it comes to shafts.

Getting fit for any golf club is paramount. Even for beginners, being fit for proper length and lie can be effective at a minimum. The beauty of super game improvement irons though is that their designs can benefit golfers effectively enough off the rack or as is.

Love the testing great info. Really considering the JPX 923 HL. Problem with test comparing a 27 degree club to a 31 degree club is apple’s and oranges. Easy to see why the 31 degree JPX 923HL is shorter it is lower loft competitors duh! But is it more forgiving and more accurate because it’s got higher loft? Who knows?
This could have easily been rectified by comparing the 28 degree JPX 923HL 6 iron against everyone else’s 7 irons of nearly equal loft. Then the forgiveness/accuracy numbers resulting would have more validity.
