Six Training Aids That Make Fixing a Slice Much Easier

I firmly believe there’s more than one way to fix a slice. However, to fix a slice for good, you need to feel the mistake you’re making and understand how to correct it. A good training aid should help you feel—or even see—what you’re doing wrong. Training aids are even better when they address more than just your slice. Here are seven training aids that make fixing a slice much easier.

Golf Impact Bag by Dr. Gary Wiren

At first glance, the Impact Bag may seem a little simple. I know the first time I used it, I thought hitting a pillow on the range could do little for my game.

While the Impact Bag may be one of the simplest training aids on the list, I’m always amazed by how it can help golfers of all levels.

When I taught golf full-time, I often used the Impact Bag to help students straighten their slices.

The Impact Bag helps you feel what it takes to square the club face at impact and maintain the proper wrist angles through the ball. I also like it as a warm-up tool and a way to gain power.

Important tip: If you think you’ll use the Impact Bag enough, invest in one, but don’t buy the cheaper knockoff brands if you have a fast swing speed. It won’t last.

The Rotator

If the cause of your slice is an over-the-top motion, The Rotator would be a good training aid to consider.

The Rotator teaches correct body rotation and makes it impossible to swing over the top. It’s a good option if you feel like your arms and body are working against each other instead of with each other.

One of the other things I like about The Rotator is that it helps reduce arm lift. If you’re looking for a more efficient golf swing (and fewer slices), give this one a try. It can help you become a better ball striker even when the slice goes away.

The Draw Board

I have a love-hate relationship with the Draw Board.

The bottom line is that this product works to fix a slice, it’s just not convenient.

There is a wedge under the mat that helps guide you on the proper in-to-out path to hit a draw. It also has all the right visuals to help. The problem is that it’s a little heavy to lug around. If you have an at-home practice setup and you’re a slicer, it’s an easier yes.

If you want to get the same feel that the Draw Board gives you, another option is to find some side hill lies to practice on. You’ll want to find a spot where the ball is slightly above your feet, and you’ll be forced to make the same shallower approach to the ball.

Pure Plane Pro GEN 3 + Mini Alignment Sticks

Alignment sticks are great for helping you fix a slice. They can be used to create better visuals and to focus your swing on the proper plane. The Pure Plane Pro is an excellent choice if you practice on mats often. You can put alignment sticks into the Pure Plane Pro without anchoring them in the ground.

This product also comes with two mini alignment sticks about 26 inches long. I like these smaller alignment sticks for indoor practice. If you want a great tool to keep in your bag to get your swing on plane, try this one.

HackMotion Wrist Sensor

The HackMotion wrist sensor is a bit more of an investment, but it’s a tool you can use for years. The HackMotion tracks your wrist angles in real-time. The app has built-in drills that will help you square your club face at impact.

To square the face, you will want a flat or slightly bowed lead wrist at impact. The correlation between wrist angle and club face angle is strong. I would recommend this tool for true students of the game. If you love going to the range, tracking data, and measuring progress, HackMotion is a very effective way to fix a slice (for good).

EyeLine Golf Speed Trap 4S

EyeLine just released their new Golf Speed Trap 4S. They fixed the one thing I never really liked about the Speed Trap, its overall size. The new one is less than half the size, fits in your golf bag, and helps you fix any swing path issues you may have.

The EyeLine Speed Trap 4S is adjustable for drivers, irons, and short game shots and provides instant feedback. I like that the Speed Trap helps reinforce proper alignment and club face control simultaneously. Sometimes, fixing a slice is simpler than you think, and you’ll figure that out quickly with a tool like this.

Final thoughts

If you don’t see any training aids that make sense to invest in, you can take the “old-fashioned” route. Spend a little time on YouTube analyzing slice fixes, use a few alignment sticks, and maybe even a towel or a glove to get the feeling down. Another great option is to take a golf lesson and get professional advice on fixing your slice. Don’t spend another season slicing.
