Oh…The Glory Days!
It’s been a few years since you heard the name Never Compromise being thrown around the golf course. There hasn’t been many putter companies that have grown as fast and shrunk as quickly. You probably remember them hitting the scene big time back around 1997…it was almost impossible to walk into any proshop across the country and not be completely bombarded by those grey and black putter faces. The indoor putting greens at the proshops were full of them!
Well those glory days were great but they were short lived. Their flame kind of fizzled…actually it was stomped out to be honest. Although the flame was re-lit when the putter company got swallowed up in a buyout by the fellas that purchased Cleveland Golf back in 2003. The new company put a line out in 2006 called the Never Compromise Exchange Series. But ever since the Exchange series it has been pretty damn quiet over at Never Compromise.
Coming Soon…Never Compromise X-Ray
But…they are hoping to change all that with a new line called the Never Compromise X-Ray Series…and no it won’t be only grey and black this time. The new putters will sport some red too. Now we have not had a chance to test these yet but from the info we have got…the idea actually sounds pretty good. The faces will have what they are going to be coining SFT (aka: “Suspended Face Technology”).
What this means is that the Never Compromise X-Ray faces will actually be made up of 2 different types of material…one hard and one soft. The raised grooves being the hard material and the red being the soft. You see most golfers have a putter that is nice and crisp or smooth and soft. But Never Compromise is hoping you can have your cake and eat it too.
Other companies like Odyssey and Ping have tried a multi-layered face approach where the outside is hard and inside is firm but this is a whole new spin on the idea of creating great feel and distance control at the same time. Face inserts have a few purposes (distance control, feel & they allow for more weight to be distributed to heel and toe). And generally this is what you get:
Harder Material Face Insterts
- Great crisp feel
- Nice sound at impact
- hard to judge speed on quick greens
- short putts…golfers sometimes decelerate with
Soft Material Face Inserts
- smooth feel
- tough to judge long putts
- hard to judge speeds on slow greens
Street Price: Never Compromise X-Ray Series $149
