Another Callaway Rogue Sub Zero is USGA Conforming

A second version of the upcoming Callaway Rogue Sub Zero has made an appearance on the USGA’s Conforming Clubs list. This brings the total count of conforming Rogue flavors to 4.

Tasty!

The second version (right) of the Rogue Sub Zero differs from the first (left) in that it offers a single rear weight as opposed to the presumably adjustable front/back system of the first version.

subz-compare

The Rogue waters are starting to get a little cloudy, but it’s a safe assumption that the single weight version will be higher MOI than the first, however, the center of gravity position will likely be higher. We’d also assume the design of the standard Rogue will follow that of Epic, meaning a higher CG offering with moderate to high MOI.

Callaway still hasn’t offered anything by way of details, and in truth, the company has been generally light on technical details for the past couple of seasons (it’s safer to repeat variations of Fast and Forgiving than to provide any verifiable technical design specifications). That said, the company’s social media teasers suggest an embargo date of 1/16/2018, so we’re still a few week out on full bean spillage.

More news, and maybe more models to follow.

I have hit the Epic SZ and the Xr side by side. They went the same distance. Both had identical specs with similar shafts. If the head specs are the same, the shaft is WAY more important. I like the Xr better.
I also hit other brands about the same distance if I can find similar shafts, although centers of gravity in the heads can vary which makes for minor differences on some brands. I hit the M1 significantly farther than the M2 for example which is the opposite of many people.

So I guess the majority would be in favor of all the club manufacturer’s retiring their R & D departments? People, EVERYTHING technological (in our generation) is moving at such a fast pace, the “average Joe” will always have a hard time keeping up with it. Though I do certainly understand the frustration of laying out $500.00, only to see an advertised “upgrade” come out 6 months to a year later, why look at this as something negative? In every aspect of life, we are advancing at such a rapid rate of speed, why are we looking to, or expecting it to stop it in the world of Golf? (Then again, it has been nearly 40 years since we put the first man on the moon) :-)

Every time there is a new driver released on a short sales cycle there is a whole group of guys that start whining about too many drivers in a short amount of time. I get this if it negatively affects your business as a retailer and to a lesser degree a fitter but as for consumers I don’t understand why all the whining and crying about the number of drivers released. It seems like this group is only worried about having the newest equipment in their bag and when a newer driver is released you feel obligated to go out and buy it. News flash, you don’t have to buy the newest equipment! In golf its not the person with the newest equipment that wins, it is the lowest score that wins! If this is about performance then you should be happy to test the newly release driver to see if it helps your game. If it helps in some way buy it and if it doesn’t don’t buy it. Please comment and tell me where I am wrong about too many drivers on a short sales cycle.

I think it might be because they are thinking about what they ‘just’ paid for when they bought their driver, then suddenly a new one comes out. So the value of theirs has gone down as well, Like buying a new car then suddenly the new model comes out. (Value of their investment) – (BTW, I’m still playing an old set of clubs, Love em, not Changing for a long time!)

IN this instance, the Epic is not going down in price until June at least, so if you bought one last season you got a year at full price, and I believe that the days of 199 drivers that were 399+ from major manufacturers is about done. M2 and M1 will drop 100 bucks to 299 and 399 respectively for a while with a Map price on it. So people getting all in a dither need to relax a minute.

Callaway is releasing 3 drivers, I have tested them all… looks like they have tweaked the sub z since I tested but still only 3 will be released.. just like every company every year…
TM M1/m2 and m2 dtype for example.
Srixon/ cobra all release the same amount…

Looks like there’ll be 4, with the Rogue Draw. Hahahahaha
      TM will have 460, 440, M4 and M4 Draw. So that’s also 4.
Cobra will only have 2, F8 and F8+ in this catergory.
And that’s not counting the X series for Callaway, and FMax for Cobra.

So what the heck are you talking about? You know nothing and assume a lot.

Is it not 5 new drivers, rouge, rouge sz, rouge draw, new xr , new xr pro with Warird, epic and epic so remaining in the line up. That’s a total of 8 drivers
In the line up. That’s Still excessive, Taylormade have learned their lesson with this approach and I think Callaway need to follow suit or they will get stung.

From reviews i have seen over the last few years Callaway and taylormade are probably the two best drivers. From the testing point of view again this is what I have found. I was wanting a new driver about eight months ago. My pro fitted me and out of about 6 different brands it came down to 2017 M2 and Callaway epic. With absolutely nothing between them for me. Then my pro asked me to hit my own driver again, 2016 M2. but this time with a heavier shaft that was working with the 2017 and low and behold I was getting better results than with either the Epic or the 2017 M2! So it was all down to a shaft change. It’s funny how you can convince yourself you need another driver when a few new ones come out but if you go to a proper fitter that is not out to make a quick sale then you could save yourself a lot of money. I would advice anyone that is getting fit. If your new driver is a different shaft than what you were used to using just ask your fitter for that shaft in your old driver before you hand over 350/400 odd pound!

Can’t please anyone these days. If they came out with a single version it would not properly fit as many different golfers as separate models can and then you’d complain about performance and they’d sell less clubs. It’s a business to sell clubs, not make the trolls happy.

I’ve been gaming the Epic (standard version) for over a year now and have no desire to change. What I love about Callaway is the Callaway Pre-Owned site where you can pickup like new clubs for wholesale prices. It’s the grass is always greener folks and constant equipment tweakers that fuel that great site …

It looks like Callaway is taking a page right out of the Taylormade marketing manual where it says that the most effective strategy is to flood the market with driver options therefore driving potential customers to other brands.
As an equipment fitter, it would drive me crazy when the mid handicapper would want a new Taylormade driver and there were 5 different models to choose from and they had no idea which best suited their game. Let’s see where this strategy gets Callaway.

And when 94% of those getting fit are not going to be able to put a repeatable enough swing on the ball to tell the difference, and even if they can do it into a net in the store it won’t bear much relation to what works best for them on the range or course.

Well said, some fit players doing it over a couple weeks, others sell them new clubs within the hour. Over half the small amount I do can’t hit the damn ball, an I tell them that. Give them a Grip, posture & aim lesson send them down the road. They thank me many times when I see them again.

If you were a properly trained clubfitter you would be able to properly qualify the customers wants and need and narrow it down before you even start. Also, as a clubfitter, your job is to find the best equipment to help the golfer improve their game and walk out happy. Your job isn’t to turn over that customer as quickly as possible and get them out the door. Gotta love today’s customer service standards/expectations.

      XJohnX:
I’ve been through enough fitting programs and certifications, as most fitters have, to know how to fit a customer. In these cases, a LOT of time was spent and the customer left with a new driver that they liked. My only point, which you missed, was that by offering four (4) different versions of the Rogue driver, the process is made more time consuming and for many week-end golfers, confusing. For an accomplished player, that variety is a good thing and helps yield a better fit.
Your quite mistaken in that a fitters job is to “turn over that customer as quickly as possible and get them out the door”. That philosophy is absolute bullshit. Perhaps that’s been your experience and that’s unfortunate but most true fittings take a considerable amount of time, even just for a driver. Well over an hour isn’t uncommon just for a driver fitting and by the way, our company ALWAYS follows up with the customer to see how they like the driver, how it has preformed and they are ALWAYS invited to come back for any adjustments at NO cost.

      Right on the button there!!
I fit 4-5 drivers per day and I can narrow it down to 2-3 just watching them hit a 7 iron 3 or 4 times..
once The right head is determined/ shaft weight then after that it personal preference and which promotes the most confidence.
I don’t see much difference between epic/ m2/ f7 that are the same setup and spec.
Setup up the first hole on the GC2 and see which one hits the most fairways!!

      xjohnx

To clarify, I said a fitters job is NOT to turn over people quickly.

X—I didn’t realize pants were such an overhyped product, rengineered to a new perfection every three months with the hope of inducing enough ego-drama to push people to spend unnecessarily. Is there public backlash against the pants industry? A growing distrust born of a stretched truth, just like some golf Club manufacturers?

      xjohnx

There seems to be a misunderstanding here. Considering this post is about a new driver VERSION added to a launch of a new driver, I am assuming people are complaining about the number of options they are given to fit their game. Instead maybe it seems people are just finding another place to complain about frequent driver releases even though Callaway is simply releasing a driver one year since their last in the same fashion golf companies have been doing for decades. I get that drivers are over-hyped and advancements are negligible. I’m just so sick of all the damn whining about something that isn’t a big deal or deviation from the “norm”. When all the complainers run the #1 golf company, they can decide when to release their drivers. But in the meantime, the noise is just that all while ignoring the basic business principles about why things are the way they are. This is the world we live in and this is simply par for the course.

      Lydell

Just for the record, I recently did complain to several people that there were too many options in pants (i.e. Khaki’s), but not enough sizes! I just wanted a pair of Khaki’s, but there were so many available with fabrics and features, it was confusing. However, to top it off, they offered to few different lengths; if you were less than 6’4″, you needed a tailor or a staple gun to fix the length. And, there was almost no odd waist sizes (no 31, no 33).
It’s tough to satisfy everyone I suppose.

So, bring on all the drivers you got, something is bound to fit one day.
