Can A Sock Improve Your Game?

If you’re like me, you’ve probably never given much thought to the socks you wear during the day-to-day grind of life, let alone on the golf course. I’ve been wearing PUMA socks from Costco for years and they’ve always gotten the job done – until now. Squid Socks is ready to change the game when it comes to performance socks for golfers and they aren’t messing around.

Let me tell you why Squid Socks are arguably the most comfortable pair of socks you’ll put on your feet.

Innocent beginnings

I got to spend some time chatting with Gabe and Jessica Miller, the founders of Squid Socks, when beginning my initial review of the product. Their story started on a honeymoon trip, of all places, when a conversation with a cousin about their baby’s socks constantly slipping down and falling off sparked an idea. Through some thorough and extensive research, Gabe and Jessica found that there really wasn’t a good solution to baby sock slippage in the industry. This inspired them to start on an entrepreneurial journey that led to Squid Socks. Years later, a new idea was sparked by comments and feedback from a friend who disliked how their socks always rolled down off their heels while golfing.

Squid Socks then introduced an adult sock line. My personal opinion? I don’t plan on going back to a different sock anytime soon.

Features and benefits

Breathability

Nothing about these socks is basic from their material construction to their fit and function. The material is predominantly viscose bamboo. This allows for excellent ventilation and moisture-wicking. These socks pull moisture away from my feet and keep them cool better than any performance sock I’ve worn in the past. My G/FORE Gallivan2r golf shoes are not breathable but my feet truly do not feel hot with these socks on.

Traction

The internal and external silicone heel grippers (plus silicone “Squid Socks” lettering on the midfoot) are impressive. A conversation with Gabe and Jessica revealed that not all silicone is created equal. Who knew? Some doesn’t adhere well to fabric. Some doesn’t provide the traction it should. Getting this right was critical for them and they knocked it out of the park. Once I am in my shoes, my feet are locked in. There is ZERO heel slip or forefoot slide within my shoe. I’ve gone back and forth with my Costco PUMAs and the difference is immediately noticeable. Every bit of stability counts while on the golf course and internal shoe stability was one I never thought of.

Comfort

squid socks

As I mentioned, this sock is predominantly made of viscose bamboo. Not only does it provide exceptional breathability but this sock has truly improved my daily comfort. A Y-stitched heel provides an ergonomic fit and great arch support. I’ve got a high arch so this has been a noticeable step forward in reduced foot fatigue. I’ve been suffering from some lateral foot pain the past couple of months as well. As soon as I started wearing the Squid Socks, it was gone within a few days. The support these socks provide has literally made my feet feel better. There is enough compression to add that little extra level of support without feeling like they are suffocating your feet. The other feature I’ve been really enjoying is the dual blister tab on the ankle socks. It prevents rubbing and chafing from both the tongue and heel of my golf shoes.

Fit and sizing

Squid Socks offers a full range of sock sizes. I wear a size 14 shoe and the XL fits me spot on. If, however, you run close to the top end shoe size for a specific range, I would recommend sizing up.

Durability

One of the main knocks I have on socks is how quickly they wear out in the heel and just below my toes. It seems like every time I buy another new set of socks from Costco, I am throwing away a few pairs due to holes. It is early on with the Squid Socks, granted, but extra cushioning in the heel and forefoot lead me to believe that these will have better durability than what I’ve grown accustomed to.

Game-changing footwear

Squid Socks have changed the game for me when it comes to footwear. While I’ve always thoroughly researched shoes, socks were just one of those purchases where I just bought whatever was available.

Squid Socks are available in men’s, women’s and children’s sizes in a no-show and ankle cut (the ankle is my favorite). They are available in a wide range of colors, allowing you to express your personality as much (or as little) as you’d like. Check out the “Power Pack.” It’s one of my favorites. Sizes range from small all the way up to XL, ensuring a fit for every foot.

Take your comfort seriously and give these socks a try.

Squid Socks

What We Like

  • Excellent comfort, fit, and breathability
  • Grippers add in-shoe stability for greater traction through the swing
  • True-to-size

What We Don't Like

  • Nothing of note. These are great socks.

The Bottom Line

Squid Socks have changed the way I view what I put on my feet. I am more comfortable, have less foot fatigue and pain, and believe these may be the best socks for golf on the market.

I honestly didn’t know socks could make that much of a difference. What it hype or was it real? I had to try. Let me just say I feel humbled. First noticed the quality (no comparison) but the compression was just enough to keep my feet feeling great! Plus no shifting, no hot spots. Sold!

I tried these and was actually surprised at how much I felt like they helped my legs with fatigue after walking 18!

Too funny, my wife got these for me for Father’s Day and then this article comes out. The quality is honestly surprising, I wasn’t expecting much out of a sock but these are super nice. Trying them on the course this weekend.

I’m genuinely surprised by socks, its weird. I have an older pair of FJ’s I keep around for range sessions so my nicer shoes don’t get the wear from the mats. Felt like I could trust the traction of my feet more on full swings and in the practice trap. I really like these. Pumped to hear about the crew socks!

Hi @Killer Carton & @Duffer1 — appreciate you both weighing in! Crew socks aren’t just on our radar — we’re actively working on them as we speak!

We kicked things off with no show and ankle cuts to launch the adult line, but expanding into crews (especially for golf, outdoor use, and bug-heavy regions like yours) is very much in motion.

Your comments are exactly the kind of real-world input we love hearing. Thanks for the nudge — and stay tuned!

They need a crew sock option for us players that live in tick country. Super bad this year here in Michigan.

Agree. No crew socks? All I wear because they absorb sweat that runs down, keeps lots of little burrs and bugs off the ankles. But can a sock improve your game? Doubt it.
