Golfers spend a lot of time trying to figure out which golf ball fits their swing speed. A more useful question might be whether swing speed changes how much the golf ball matters.
Our 2026 robot test gave us driver data at 85, 100 and 115 mph along with three different 7-iron speeds. When we compared how the same golf balls performed as speed increased, one thing became pretty clear: the gap between golf balls doesn’t necessarily stay the same.
If two balls are separated by a small amount at 85 mph but a much larger amount at 115 mph, the faster golfer has more performance at stake when making that choice.
Driver speed can make the differences bigger
The clearest example was ball speed with the driver.
Every ball got faster as club speed increased but they didn’t all gain speed at the same rate. Lower-compression balls generally fell farther behind our Pro V1 control as driver speed increased.
The Callaway Supersoft, for example, was 1.38 mph slower than the Pro V1 at 85 mph. At 115 mph, it was 4.74 mph slower. TaylorMade SpeedSoft went from 1.21 mph behind at 85 mph to 3.63 mph behind at 115.
That doesn’t mean slower swingers can ignore golf ball selection. One mile per hour of ball speed still matters. What it does suggest is that the penalty associated with choosing a slower ball can become much larger as driver speed increases.
If you swing at 85 mph, two balls may look relatively close off the tee. Put those same balls in the hands of a golfer swinging 115 mph and the separation can be much easier to see.

The iron data is a good reminder not to oversimplify this
If more speed simply made every golf ball difference bigger, we’d expect to see the same thing with the 7-iron. We didn’t.
At 65 mph with a 7-iron, several lower-compression balls were slightly faster than the Pro V1 control. As speed increased to 90 mph, most of those small advantages disappeared.
The important word there is “small.” The iron differences were generally fractions of a mile per hour, nowhere near the multi-mph gaps we saw with the driver.
That tells us two things. Swing speed matters but so does the type of shot you’re hitting. Driver impact and 7-iron impact don’t load the golf ball the same way so there’s no reason to expect the golf ball to respond exactly the same way either.
What should you do with this information?
If you’re a higher-speed player, this is another reason not to assume golf balls that look similar on paper are going to perform similarly for you. A relatively small difference at moderate driver speed can become a meaningful one as speed increases.
For slower players, the takeaway isn’t that the golf ball doesn’t matter. It’s that some of the driver ball speed gaps may be smaller than they are for faster golfers. That could give you a little more freedom to prioritize other things such as iron flight, spin, greenside performance or feel.
Swing speed doesn’t give you a simple answer for which golf ball to play. It changes the way some golf balls perform relative to one another.
