Limited-Edition Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Tactical Driver

Available for pre-sale today are a pair of new Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke drivers. More specifically, they’re limited-edition Paradym Ai Smoke Tactical drivers.

That means they’re the same Paradym Ai Smoke Max and Triple Diamond drivers you already know (and maybe love) but a good bit of the cosmetics is green.

That’s fun, right?

Con or Cool?

There are a couple of ways you can look at this.

First, these mid- (or, in this case, early- to mid-) season limited-edition releases are overplayed. The differences are largely, if not entirely, cosmetic. The upcharges are hard to justify and when you’re willing to eat the additional cost, it can be a real gut punch if you’ve already bought one and you like the new colorway better.

So, yeah, be angry if you want. People are mad about dumber stuff.

From the manufacturer’s viewpoint, these little refreshes (limited or otherwise) provide an opportunity to refocus attention on an aging product line, although I’d argue that just roughly five months into its cycle, Ai Smoke hasn’t aged all that much.

But, again, it’s fun.

For whatever it’s worth, I think the new design looks cool. While the green take on Callaway’s forged composite material isn’t technically camo, the chunks of forged carbon on the sole provide what I assume is an intentional camo feel that plays nicely with the tactical theme.

It’s well done.

Frankly, I’m not sure what happened with Callaway’s industry design team between the original Paradym and Ai Smoke but the entire lineup (metalwoods to irons and even the upcoming wedges) look so much better.

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Triple Diamond Tactical Driver

That said, I’m not entirely on board with the green paint on the crown. It’s about as tactical as a shiny red driver is covert.

The Whole Tactical Package

Completing the Paradym Ai Smoke Tactical package are a tactical green cosmetic version of the Mitsubishi Tensei AV Blue, a Golf Pride MCC Tactical (Surprise! It has green accents!) grip and a custom headcover.

This new website design looks really, really bad, MGS. Lots of pointless whitespace, I thought it didn’t load correctly at first.

      Smaller drivers
The driver I like best is my old Callaway ERC Fusion. The 360cc head is just the right size for an older golfer, and with a 44.5″ shaft is way to swing for an 80 year old golfer. I would love to be able to buy a 360-390cc driver with newer technology with OptiFit adjustability and alternate shafts. I have a Mini 1.5 that I like, but the ERC Fusion looks so good.

I see a lot of pros hitting what is called a 2 wood, with a smaller head. I don’t know if these are offered by any of the major brands. Perhaps a 2 wood is what I need. Or are they really mini drivers with strong 3 wood lofts?

Does MyGolfSpy have any ideas about 2 woods?

Exactly why I stay away from this brand, you buy a +$500 stick that is supposed to be their best ever and they come out with an upgraded version 6 months later, same will happen in Dec/Jan next year. No thanks, I voted with my wallet on these guys long ago.

KaBoom Baby for the golfer looking for the perfect military statement, every golf club has the military members who love their country along with the weapons to allow them to be who they are, too bad Callaway missed the week prior to Memorial Day for the release of the “green monster.”

Between PXG spewing their military bent to this Callaway BS, and so many other things having militaristic designs, it looks like the world is slowly getting people ready for WW3.
If they weren’t, we would have Pokemon and Minions instead of this tactical bs

Is a Tactical driver (color) really needed? It is time to be done with camo/tactical stuff in the golf industry, I am not really sure what the reason for this is, makes no sense.

You know that one guy who always throws his clubs after a bad shot? That’s the real target audience. He’ll never find them if they’re camouflaged, so that’s an extra sale!

Sales must be poorer than expected! As you said in your prelude: You can already fit a shorter shaft in your normal driver head!
Far cheaper to try a shorter shaft, than fork out $700 for a limited edition.
I’d recommend a driver fitting for about $100!

      Sorry
Dumb marketing hype with no engineering rationale!!!
Everyone is dying for a metal wood that is shorter than their current stick and requires a zero handicap to use in the fairway.

I’m sure the green color will improve a player’s score dramatically!!
