FootJoy Reinvents Its Most Popular Spikeless Shoe

FootJoy’s Premiere Series is the star of the show on basically every professional tour. But don’t sleep on the Pro/SL.

The FootJoy Pro/SL is the brand’s most-worn spikeless golf shoe and now it’s been completely reinvented for a more precise fit, added comfort and better traction.

This is more than just another iteration. It’s a real evolution that pulls from 10 years of Pro/SL. Yep, it’s the 10th anniversary of the highly popular spikeless golf shoe and this new version has set the bar for what a performance spikeless golf shoe is, does, and acts like.

What’s new?

I thought you’d never ask. The main tech story here is the retooled traction. A spikeless golf shoe is only as good as its traction. That is to say, a spikeless golf shoe is worthless if it doesn’t help you stay grounded.

The new outsole (which FootJoy is calling ARCTrax/SL) has two distinct traction elements: sharp conical shapes in the heel and toe and directional wings in the midfoot. These two elements work together to provide omnidirectional traction in any condition.

In addition to retooled traction, the new FootJoy Pro/SL also features a re-engineered upper called ZTEC. That’s FootJoy-speak for a synthetic upper with TPU overlays and reinforcements in key areas. That said, it should do the job just fine and will definitely provide the waterproofness you’re looking for.

Top it off (or bottom it out) with a StratoFoam crashpad in the heel (the forefoot is a standard EVA) and a nylon plate near the forefoot for torsional support and you’ve got yourself a fairly complete spikeless golf shoe.

Oh, and the fit has been updated, too, with more room in the toe box and better padding around the collar.

Is it any good?

While the FootJoy Pro/SL hasn’t been put through its paces here in our testing lab, I’m happy to offer my expert opinion. The new Pro/SL is a worthy upgrade over its predecessors and should be on your short list of spikeless golf shoes, especially if you’re already a fan of the FootJoy brand.

I love FJ but the traction here looks sketchy. The little nubs are also on my Contour Carbons and get destroyed easily. VersaTrax on the premier spikeless is fantastic and lasts… and has even become my favorite office shoe.

I used to be a fan of Footjoy but the last 2 pair I bought fell apart after a year(50-75 rounds) while my New Balance lasted almost 3 years. Also had good luck with Adidas.

Connor, dude, what happened? I’ve been disappointed in recent golf shoe offerings. Whether it’s G/FORE, the Adidas MC80s, or plenty of FootJoy models, I need another white base, colored sole, or white base, colored stitching, or white base/ colored camo whatever, etc..like I need a hole in my head. That’s why I have a pair of Travis Matthew Curator The Legend (Navy) I wear, and 3 (was 4) brand new backups, HOWEVER, the FootJoy Dry Ice Field LX would have been a 100%, no hesitation, no doubt purchase, with a high probability of at least one backup purchase. I’d much prefer blaming you, and not myself. So, did you write a stand-alone piece on this particular Premier release/drop? Thanks. K²

While you might be a shoe expert, many times an updated product is not worth anything. Also stated that the “definitely provide the waterproofness you’re looking for.” While it might be so, the manufacturing process could also have issues.

From these comments, it sounds more like MySpy has changed from a product testing evaluation setup to an endorsement arm of Footjoy.

Connor, some constructive criticism: any shoe review should mention if it comes in additional widths beyond D/Medium or sizes beyond 12. This is the shoe version of clubs coming in lefty. I don’t give a rat’s behind how well regarded a shoe is if it won’t fit my foot. I understand not every shoe will come in narrow/wide or size 14 – but it would be good to know before I look into it, just like reading the hype about a new club only to find out it won’t be made in lefty.

Stop the futuristic looking B.S. How is there more traction when 1/3 of the bottom is hollow..FootJoy needs to stop thinking they are Nike..

I was going to say something about the tread. Looks like an artificial turf shoe or trail runner. Both of which can be had for less.
