Forum Member Review: AutoFlex Dream 7 Shafts

Golfers are always on the lookout for equipment that promises to enhance their game and the AutoFlex Dream 7 driver shaft has generated considerable buzz. This Forum Member review summarizes the experiences of multiple testers, providing an insightful guide to help you decide if this innovative (and expensive) shaft deserves a place in your bag.

The Testing Opportunity

MyGolfSpy Forum members were given the unique opportunity to test the AutoFlex Dream 7 driver shaft, a product that has been making waves in the golfing community. Known for its Korean Hidden Technology (KHT), the AutoFlex Dream 7 claims to offer unparalleled flexibility and control, adapting to a wide range of swing speeds and styles. This testing aimed to provide a thorough, real-world evaluation of the shaft’s performance, drawing from the on-course and launch monitor performance our eight testers experienced.

This Forum member review of the AutoFlex Dream 7 driver shafts highlighted several key aspects appreciated by testers. The shafts were praised for their unique “Korea Hidden Technology,” which combines high-quality carbon fiber and proprietary materials, offering a lightweight and flexible design that claims to improve distance and accuracy. Testers noted an initial adjustment period due to the shaft’s unusual flexibility but once acclimated, many reported significant improvements in their drives with less effort. The AutoFlex Dream7 shafts provided a higher ball flight and reduced dispersion, leading to longer and generally straighter shots. Some testers mentioned a learning curve, with early rounds showing inconsistent results, but subsequent use resulted in a noticeable performance boost for most.

That said, at the end of testing, some had mixed feelings about whether to keep the AutoFlex Dream 7 shafts as their new gamers. Some, like KC Golf and chisag, reported fantastic numbers and decided to continue using the AutoFlex shafts, appreciating the significant improvements in distance and control. Others, such as Jean D, felt the shaft never felt entirely natural despite extensive testing and chose to revert to their previous setups or explore alternative options. Overall, the AutoFlex Dream7 shafts demonstrated impressive potential but personal preference played a significant role in their long-term adoption.

To view all their final grades and further insights continue reading below.

First Impressions

Upon unboxing the AutoFlex Dream 7, the initial reaction was a mix of curiosity and skepticism. The shaft’s flexibility is immediately noticeable, almost reminiscent of a fly fishing rod. This excessive waggle felt unfamiliar and led to doubts about its performance. Early swings for some were disappointing, with testers struggling to find consistency and comfort. However, this initial phase of discomfort was a necessary part of the learning curve.

Tester Chisag described his initial experience as follows: “Waggling the Dream 7 before my first swing sent all kinds of information to my subconscious and my first 3 swings produced some pretty poor results.”

Tester nvizble1 said: “The shaft felt different but promising from the start.”

Aesthetic Appeal

Visually, the AutoFlex Dream 7 is striking. Its design, featuring an intricate pattern and vibrant colors, is both modern and appealing. The shaft’s graphics, combined with its sleek profile, make it a standout piece of equipment. While aesthetics might not impact performance, the Dream 7’s appearance adds a level of confidence and enjoyment for the player. For those wanting to go bold the orange, white and green options will certainly stand out. Others looking for a more subtle look can go with black options that have accent colors for highlights.

Chisag said: “The Dream 7 fits this description perfectly and it just looks really good at address. I do like the colors of mine and feel like I have a bit of old school black combined with the orange flowers and a modern color.”

Jean D: “The shaft is absolutely gorgeous in person, with its vibrant and distinctive design.”

BallsLeon: “The shaft’s graphics are striking and unique, definitely an eye-catcher on the course.”

Performance and Testing

Adjusting to the Flexibility

One of the most significant challenges testers faced was adapting to the shaft’s unusual flexibility. The initial rounds were marked by inconsistent shots and varying trajectories. However, as testers continued to use the shaft, their swings adapted. After the initial portion of testing, many reported a noticeable improvement in control and distance. By the end of testing, the shaft’s performance had won over every tester, even the most skeptical, for its potential.

A common theme among testers was slow improvement over time and getting used to the shafts.

ZMendle10: “”It felt strange at first, but performance improved over time with better ball flight and reduced dispersion.”

Chisag: “Every round got better as I slowly began to break down the illusions the excessive waggle created in my subconscious and started to trust the Korean Hidden Technology would do its job and tighten up through impact.”

Jean D: “Despite not feeling entirely natural initially, it delivered solid performance and became a preferred choice.”

Dream Performance?

The AutoFlex Dream 7 produced impressive numbers. Testers observed increased distance and improved accuracy, with many achieving their longest drives on familiar courses. The shaft’s design helps optimize spin and trajectory, resulting in consistently high performance. Some of the testers reported a perfect balance of distance and control, crucial for improving overall game off the tee.

ZMendle10: “Significant gains in both distance and accuracy, particularly with improved consistency.”

Golfspy_CG2: “Noticed improvements in my game, with more consistent and longer drives, planning to make it a permanent part of my setup.”

Kenny B: “The shaft has become a reliable part of my setup, contributing to more consistent drives.”

On-Course Experience

Real-world performance of the AutoFlex Dream 7 was exceptional. Testers highlighted the shaft’s ability to deliver consistent, straight drives with minimal effort. The combination of increased distance and accuracy provided a significant advantage, especially on challenging courses. Confidence in the shaft’s performance allowed testers to swing more freely and aggressively, leading to better overall scores.

KC Golf: “The Dream 7 provided significant improvements in both distance and accuracy. Some drives were notably longer and straighter, which was encouraging during rounds.”

BallsLeon: “”Noticed a tighter dispersion and more consistent ball flight, making it easier to predict and control my shots.”

Key Highlights From Testers

Learning Curve

The AutoFlex Dream 7 requires a period of adjustment. Initial discomfort due to its flexibility may deter some golfers but persistence pays off. Testers emphasized the importance of trusting the shaft and allowing time to adapt to its unique feel.

Flexibility and Control

Despite its unusual flexibility and bend profile, the Dream 7 apparently tightens up during the swing, providing a controlled and powerful impact. This characteristic is the Korean Hidden Technology working its magic and what contributes to the shaft’s high performance.

Adaptability

The Dream 7 is versatile, accommodating a range of swing speeds and styles. Testers with different swing characteristics found the shaft adaptable, providing optimal performance across various handicaps, transition types and swing speeds.

Final Grades

So after all the testing was complete and the hundreds of drives hit, where did our testers rank the AutoFlex Dream 7?

When all was said and done, the grades were 95, 95, 97, 95, 70, 73, 93 and 90. As expected, a product that works for many but not all.

Tester Zmendle10 had a good summary, saying: “This shaft does exactly what it is billed as. When built and fitted correctly this shaft can be an absolute powerhouse by increasing club head speed, ball speed, and for those that like it a very responsive feel. The attention to detail in the artwork is fantastic and always something to look at every time you’re waiting on the tee box for the group in front to pick up the pace. If you are a smooth swinging golfer who is looking for a bit more height off the tee and everything else that comes with it this shaft should be on your list. While I don’t fit this category of golfer it was blatantly obvious that the tech is working and the times where I could get it to work the ball flew.”

Keep It or Trade It?

A significant majority of the testers decided to continue using the AutoFlex Dream 7 shaft. The reasons cited include enhanced distance, improved accuracy and increased confidence in their driving game.

Chisag: “I was really starting to like the shaft by my 3rd round and by my 6th round I was completely won over by its performance.”

KC Golf: “This is definitely staying in my bag. I can’t see this Autoflex Dream 7 shaft not being in the bag for a while. It’s just a great fairway finder and I love the trajectory.”

Returning to Older Shafts

While the majority embraced the new shaft, a few testers decided to return to their previous equipment. The primary reasons for this included the high cost and the initial adjustment period. However, even those who reverted acknowledged the potential benefits of the AutoFlex Dream 7, suggesting it might be more suited to golfers willing to invest time and money into optimizing their performance.

Conclusion

The AutoFlex Dream 7 driver shaft, with its innovative design and high performance, stands out as a top choice for golfers seeking to enhance their game but has an extremely high price point to go along with it. While the initial adjustment period may be challenging, the results are well worth the effort. Testers’ experiences highlight the shaft’s ability to deliver exceptional distance and accuracy, making it a must-try for golfers interested in aftermarket shafts.

Whether you are a seasoned golfer or a novice looking to improve, the AutoFlex Dream 7 driver shaft offers a unique blend of flexibility, control and aesthetic appeal that can significantly enhance your performance on the course.

To be clear, the smoother your transition the better the results with autoFlex shafts. After all it was played on tour by Fred Couples, Ernie Els, Adam Scott and Michelle Wie. I would add at age 71 gaining distance and improving dispersion was more than welcome. I was playing a Ventus Red Velocore and an AD-IZ I was fit into and they worked very well for my swing. The extra 10+ yds from the Dream 7 was nice but not sure I would pay the $880 for 10-15yds that applies to my best swings. But I play a natural draw off the tee and when my swing was off my 3-5yd draw could turn into a 10-15yd hard draw and the left side usually means trouble. The Dream 7 is insanely straight for me and adding 10+ yds while hitting many more fairways was what separated the autoFlex from the “otto flex” light weight sr/ladies flex shafts I had tried in the past.

I think Jamie summed things up very well but to clarify a comment he made “However, as testers continued to use the shaft, their swings adapted.” is not accurate for me. In fact the opposite is true. Because it flexes so much when waggling my subconscious assumed I had to swing it differently and my initial results were very poor. It wasn’t until I learned to ignore the waggle and trust the Dream 7 design and just swing it normally that it really came to life. The faster I swing, the better it performs. I am someone that enjoys tinkering with equipment, especially with shafts simply because I find it interesting and fun. 6 months later I haven’t even looked at another shaft.

I have read testing where simply going down a flex and down to less than 55 Gm with “standard shafts” produces Autoflex-like performance. I did this by simply putting a 40 Gm Alta Distanza in my Ping G430 with results similar to Autoflex on outdoor comparison testing What Say You???
Perhaps the gains the testers experienced were perhaps due to their own “gamer” shafts being ill-fitted to begin with.

I tried the same with a grafalloy prolaunch blue shaft. I went down two flex points and it was very straight, although my carry distance increased there was minimal rollout, so I didn’t gain much total distance. Maybe going down two flex points with a lower launching shaft would work better for me🤷🏻‍♂️. I did try the same Gplb shaft with a tour adapter to lower the loft of my driver head, but that didn’t work. The dispersion was all over the place.

I’ve gamed both the “ottophlex” with a senior flex AD-IZ (also not cheap) and the Autoflex SF505 for about a year each. Previously Ventus Blue 6S, which I loved but was definitely shorter.

Yes you can get easy distance by going softer and lighter but the magic of AutoFlex for me was that I could go 1.5″ longer with no increased variance in strike pattern. Does it work for everyone? Absolutely not. But for a decent-sized group of people, the potential gains are huge. btw I’m a 3 hdcp w/SS 100-105mph.

There are a number of YouTube videos that show exactly what you are talking about. The fact that you have to “adapt” your swing to these shafts means that most of these testers probably had jerky or fast transitions from the top. So maybe they got better results because their swings got smoother and in better tempo. A friend of mine bought one of these and used it for awhile but is now back to a conventional, light weight senior shaft.

100% spot-on with the ill-fitted, as well as their egos telling them to swing something stiffer and heavier to show their macho-ness, not wanting to admit they needed something more flexible and lighter. And the lighter thing also relates to headweights and grip weights for a lighter total weight also to help them whip it through with more speed
