I Asked AI to Fit Me For A New Driver

What can AI do for you?

A month ago, I asked AI to buy me new golf shoes. That was a mistake.

Not because AI isn’t capable of understanding a prompt and spitting out a decent response. It was a mistake because it opened up a rabbit hole that I can’t seem to escape.

I’ve gone back and forth many times on whether AI tools can be useful for the everyday consumer. For example, can AI help me find a driver that’s right for my game?

It’s worth noting that AI will never (at least I don’t think so) replace a real club fitting. That said, with a few details about my swing, is it possible to get a recommendation that’s at least better than doing my own laborious research?

I tried it so you didn’t have to. I gave a few different AI chatbots the same prompt that detailed my swing speed, my angle of attack and my preferred shot shape. Let’s see what they spit out.

Chat GPT Recommendations

As with my last piece, it’s worth noting that the Chat GPT I have access to doesn’t have the most current data. As such, I expected my driver fitting to consist of older models.

Based on these factors, here are a few driver options you might consider:

  • TaylorMade SIM2 Max D Driver: This driver is designed with a draw-biased design, promoting a right-to-left shot shape. It also features adjustability for loft and lie angles.
  • Callaway Big Bertha B21 Driver: Known for forgiveness and distance, this driver has a draw bias to help players with a slice tendency. It’s designed to maximize distance and forgiveness on off-center hits.
  • Ping G425 SFT Driver: The SFT (Straight Flight Technology) version of the G425 driver is engineered to help golfers who slice the ball. It features a draw-biased design and adjustability for loft.
  • Titleist TSi2 Driver: While not explicitly draw-biased, the TSi2 driver offers high forgiveness and a low CG, which can help promote a right-to-left shot shape. It also provides adjustability for loft and lie angles.
  • Cobra King RADSPEED XB Driver: Cobra’s RADSPEED XB (Xtreme Back) driver is designed for forgiveness and distance. It features weight distribution that promotes a draw bias and offers adjustability for loft and lie angles.

Before making a purchase, I highly recommend visiting a golf retailer or pro shop to get fitted for the right driver. A professional fitting session will ensure that you find the perfect combination of shaft, loft, and clubhead design to optimize your performance on the course.

My Amateur Analysis of Chat GPT’s Driver Fitting

Overall, based on my criteria and Chat GPT’s older data, I don’t hate a few of these. I told it that I preferred a draw and that I hit slightly down on the ball. I’m actually coming from the old PING G410 SFT that I hit fairly well. Even still, I would have liked to see some lower-spin options here.

Google Gemini Recommmendations

I asked Google Gemini to fit me for a new driver with the same prompt that I used for Chat GPT. This included my swing speed, angle of attack and preferred shot shape.

Here are some popular driver models known for their performance with faster swing speeds and draw bias that come in left-handed options:

  • TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus Driver (Left-handed): This driver is known for its forgiveness and distance with a slight draw bias.
  • Titleist TSi3 Driver (Left-handed): This driver offers adjustability and a lower spin profile, allowing you to dial in launch and spin for a penetrating draw.
  • Callaway Rogue ST Max D Driver (Left-handed): This driver is another forgiving option with a draw bias to help you find the fairway more consistently.

While these are great options, the best driver for you will depend on your specific swing mechanics and preferences. I strongly recommend getting fitted for a driver by a professional. They can analyze your swing, launch conditions, and ball flight to recommend a driver that optimizes your distance and accuracy with a draw shape.

My Amateur Analysis of Google Gemini’s Driver Fitting

Overall, I think Google did a little better than Chat GPT. In fact, it actually recommended the TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus, which was our best driver for 2023. Not bad, not bad.

Google did a better job at offering low-spin options, too. Even though I didn’t tell it I needed low spin, Google Gemini was able to determine that my speed and angle of attack probably warranted a lower-spin head. Good on you, Google Gemini!

Bing Copilot Recommendations

Last, but not least, I asked Bing Copilot to fit me for a new driver. Its results, in my opinion, are probably the best of the bunch.

Let’s explore a few drivers that could suit your needs:

  • TaylorMade Qi10 Driver: Combining features from both the Max and LS models, the standard Qi10 is an exceptional all-round performer. It’s forgiving and appeals to a broad spectrum of players. Available in left-handed configurations.
  • Ping G430 Max 10K Driver: The G430 Max 10K delivers stability, forgiveness, low spin, and high ball speed. It’s an impressive choice for left-handed golfers seeking consistency and distance1.
  • Titleist TSR2 Driver: A classic-looking driver with impressively fast ball speeds. The generous 460cc clubhead ensures consistent flight and distance. Available in left-handed options.

Remember that custom fitting with a local pro or retailer is essential to find the perfect match for your swing. Additionally, consider shaft options that suit your swing speed, such as lightweight graphite shafts for distance

My Amateur Analysis of Bing Copilot’s Driver Fitting

Is this the best of the bunch? It’s hard to say. I do love the G430 Max 10k recommendation (our No. 1 driver for 2024). Copilot didn’t seem to offer many low-spin options like Google Gemini did.

What Can AI Do For You?

Were my results any good? That’s up to interpretation. While AI is still a useful tool for some things, I’m not sure I would fully trust an AI chatbot to recommend a driver.

If you’re looking to get fitted for a driver without an actual certified fitter, might I suggest TrueGolfFit? Shameless plug, I know, but our TrueGolfFit system analyzes millions of data points from hundreds of thousands of swings in order to fit you for a driver.

My TrueGolf Fit Recommendations

What did TrueGolfFit recommend? I fed it the same information, save my preferred shot shape. The results?

TrueGolfFit fitted me into the Cleveland Launcher XL2 Draw. My other option was the PXG 0311 Gen 6. They’re both drastically different than what the AI bots recommended. Not what I was expecting, but I definitely trust data over hype.

When in Doubt

Not sure where to start? Skeptical about online fittings? In any case, each AI chatbot echoed the same sentiment. Work with a certified fitter to find what’s best for your game.

So which driver are you actually playing?

Also we might be a few years away, but if TrueGolfFit was backed by AI with access to a massive amount of swing data I don’t see a reason it couldn’t come up with great fits. If AI can design a driver I don’t see why it can’t eventually fit a driver.
