I Suck at Golf. This $15 Accessory Makes Me Suck Less

I’m the self-anointed worst golfer at MyGolfSpy. Our staff is full of lifelong golfers who can absolutely bomb the ball and score in bunches.

I, on the other hand, struggle to get through a round without a few triples and losing a half-dozen of my Bridgestone Tour B X golf balls.

That said, I’m slowly and steadily improving and there are a few pieces of gear that have really helped me along the way. The least obvious (but perhaps most impactful and no-brainer) is a striped golf tee.

Yep, it sounds really stupid. How does a regular old golf tee help a sucky golfer suck less? The name of the game is consistency. I struggle at times to tee the ball up at a consistent height which results in less than desirable tee shots.

Striped tees, like these plastic beauties from Maxfli (I love the neon colors) make it extremely easy to tee the ball up at the same height on every driver hole. They’re darn near unbreakable, too!

It’s funny how it works. The more often I find the middle of the face, the more often I find the middle of the fairway! Who knew?

Anyhow, I can’t promise a golf tee will change your game. But I can promise that a consistent tee height will add much-needed consistency to your long game! Give it a try if you haven’t already.

I switched to Martini Step-Up Golf Tees 3 1/4″ over a year ago after finding one on a course and using it. Tee’s set just about the perfect height every time so I bought 2 packages of 5. Now I have 11 tees that I’ve used about 3 times per week. Their bright colors make them hard to lose and I don’t believe that the softer plastic will damage the club face.(well, not with my club head speed)

I love the Maxfli tees as well. Don’t care one way or the other about the stripes. The tees make me happy when I pull them out of my pocket.

I have used the Tour Tee Plus for a while now. Originally used the standard Tour Tee, but changed to these as they only go into the round so far, with the added benefit of consistent height.

I use the 4-more-yards tees for the same reason. They really don’t add any extra yards, but they always tee up to the same height, and are practically indestructible. That extra consistency really does make a difference.

Ditto–I have been using Western Birch striped tees (wood and bamboo) for several years. Much more eco-friendly.

I too love the stripes for consistent tee height and the much less breakage with plastic tees, but plastic tees go flying each time so you’ll spend 30 seconds looking for your tee each hole. Plastic tees are also nightmares for grounds crews and turf equipment. I suggest if you want striped tees to buy wooden ones. They’ll still break but they’re better for everyone.

Ditto. I grew up with “wooden” woods, and was warned plastic tees score the clubface. Fast forward to Stealth drivers, etc. I warned my friend about plastic tees, and sure enough they damaged his expensive composite driver face. You can buy a year’s supply of wood/bamboo tees for the price of a few plastic ones that you lose or break anyway.
