Golf Driver Distance Calculator: Enter Your Age And Handicap

My 33-year-old brother-in-law hits his driver 300 yards. Hitting the fairway is a different story.

He’ll plug his age and handicap into the calculator below and land well above average. That doesn’t change the fact that distance isn’t the part of his game he needs to work on.

That’s the thing about these averages. Knowing yours is high or low doesn’t mean much unless you feel your driving distance is a problem. If you’re a scratch golfer who’s 10 yards short of your peer average, keep doing you.

So check where you stand and then decide if you care. If you do, there are some tips below on how to hit it farther. If you don’t, you can stop right here.

To build this calculator, we took the Arccos data behind our age and handicap driver charts and turned it into a calculator. Enter your gender, age and handicap, and you’ll see the average driver distance for golfers like you.

Enter your age and handicap to see how you compare

This is the Arccos data we published, made easier to use. It builds on our age and handicap driver distance charts and the Arccos Annual Driving Distance Report, 2026 Edition.

What to do with this data

The calculator gives you a benchmark, not a verdict. To use it, compare your average on-course drive, in total yards, with the peer average above. Use a typical drive, not your best one of the month. Once you have your results, here is what I would do with the information.

If you’re at or ahead of the average

Make sure the yards are helping you.

  • Check fairways hit, not just distance. Extra yards only pay off if the ball stays in play.
  • Don’t panic as the numbers drop with age. In the Arccos data, low-handicap men lose 54 yards between their 20s and 70s while fairways hit rise from 42 to 60 percent.

If you’re about 5 yards behind

That’s well inside normal. Don’t buy a new driver yet.

  • Make sure the number is real. Average a lot of drives because one windy or firm round can move your numbers.
  • Choose a ball for flight and spin, not distance. In our 2026 ball test, total distance barely separated the field at mid swing speeds but getting the right flight and spin can have a big impact. Use the Golf Ball Selector to find one that suits your game.
  • Swing smoother, not harder. Here are 3 signs you’re trying too hard.
  • Check tee height and ball position the next time you go to the range.

If you’re about 10 yards behind

This is where equipment starts to matter. A driver that doesn’t suit you can hold you back more than you’d think.

  • Make sure your driver isn’t working against you. In our driver test, a golfer’s best-fitted driver averaged 15 yards longer than their typical driver while their worst-fitted driver averaged 16 yards shorter. Here’s the full breakdown.
  • Get fitted. Short of speed training, moving from an off-the-rack driver to a properly fitted one is the best chance to gain real distance.
  • Bring your current driver to the fitting so you have a baseline and judge the result on tight shot patterns as well as yards.
  • Book one lesson focused on strike. Hitting the driver in the center of the face could get you those ten yards without making any other changes.

The numbers are worthless as a statistic unless you are going to show the st. dev. for each handicap by age. If the St. Dev. is +-15 yds then one would have a much better understanding of what to expect distance-wise and how one compares.
