How Rare Is A Birdie For Your Handicap? (We Ran The Numbers)

It’s easy to remember a birdie and it’s fun to chase one. If you’ve ever wondered if you make enough birdies or if you should be making more, this may help you. We dug into some data from Shot Scope to see how many birdies you should be making for your handicap.

What are your real birdie odds?

Here’s the average number of birdies made per round by handicap.

HandicapBirdies per Round
02.34
51.26
100.72
150.36
200.36
250.18

Let’s translate that into something more tangible.

To estimate birdie “odds,” we divide birdies per round by 18 holes. That gives us an average birdie rate per hole across a typical round. Of course, birdie chances are not equal on every hole. Par-5s, for example, produce more birdies than long par-3s. But across a normal mix of holes, this gives us a realistic expectation.

Here’s what that looks like:

HandicapBirdies/RoundBirdie Chance per HoleAverage Holes Between Birdies
02.3413%8 holes
51.267%14 holes
100.724%25 holes
150.362%50 holes
200.362%50 holes
250.181%100 holes

Next time you’re frustrated that you “only” made one birdie in your round… you might actually be right on schedule.

The real scoring difference isn’t birdies. It’s double bogeys

Birdies are fun to talk about but double bogeys are where scores are ruined. You’ll quickly see that the real difference between a scratch golfer and a 20 or 25 handicap comes down to the ability to control bogeys.

A 20 handicap makes about one birdie every three rounds but they make almost seven double bogeys per round on average. Even one extra birdie in a round won’t make up for all the extra doubles.

HandicapBirdiesDoubles or Worse
02.340.27
51.261.44
100.722.88
150.364.68
200.366.66
250.189.18

Final thoughts

Improvement in golf almost never looks like more birdies. It’s almost always about better misses, fewer penalties and more greens in regulation. Birdies are rare for almost all of us so enjoy them when they happen.

My son told me to sign up as a tester but in league play I have a 33 handicap. I know I’m nowhere near good enough to give my thoughts on a product and have it mean anything. Look your charts stop at 25, I can’t even use them!

This puts everything into perspective and helps take away the personal expectations & pressures of scoring birdies on each hole. It will definitely help me simplify my approach to playing the game this year.

I know the Metrics show this for average person, but they don’t apply to everyone. As a 63-year-old with some back issues a low teen handicap I lack distance and only driver over 200 a few times a round but don’t need distance on par 3s or short par 4s I lose strokes on long par 4s and 5s but am a threat to birdie the par 3s and 4s. If I would give up on trying to kill the ball hoping to make the greens on longer holes and just concede the 1 extra shot it would cut doubles but alas, I’m stubborn.

I’m a 17 and sometimes have 1 or 2 per round. My score killers are typically losing it off the Tee and/or a few doubles and of course the dreaded triple.

The math on this seems to check out, based on my cards.

This data is spot on ! Not only do doubles spoil the scorecard, they are mentally devastating.

True, but my handicap varies from 17 to 23, depending on my back, and I was given an honorary handicap of 29 after getting back to golf after breaking my neck and cracking 7 vertebrae. Life is good. On a good day I get called a bandit. On a bad day no one comments.

It’s funny. I’m usually around 8-10 HCP. Before I saw the chart, I guessed “less than 1 birdie per round” and it was correct. And yes, double bogeys just snipe my game. Just keeping the ball in play is a somewhat underrated part of the game.

Couldn’t agree more. Double bogeys are the score killer!

Excellent analysis. As an 8 index, the chart is spot on for me. I useally get one birdie and suffer one double bogie per round.
